Seeking to complete a newly unlocked rare artifact? Then this post is for you!
There are five rare Fossil artifacts:
绝种龟壳
requiring 150 fragments (my 42nd Fossil solve)
化石迅猛龙
requiring 100 fragments (my 21st Fossil solve)
翼手龙宝宝
requiring 120 fragments (my 30th Fossil solve)
远古琥珀
requiring 100 fragments (my 7th Fossil solve)
化石幼兽
requiring 85 fragments (my 15th Fossil solve)
Note: There are NO keystones available for Fossil archaeological solves
While I may not have solved all 32 archaeological rares (I have 25 thus far), after hundreds of hours dedicated to the cause I can say this -
there is a method to the madness!
And I say madness because archaeology is one profession that should not be taken lightly. Get ready to dig... Lots.
When you arrive at a dig site, take a look around you. The surrounding mobs will generally be the best indication of what kind of archaeological finds you may uncover while surveying there. If you're surrounded by ogres, or something less obvious, then consider what the local settlements are predominantly comprised of, or who the local lore is related to.
In the Hinterlands or STV you'll be surrounded by throngs of trolls - and whadya know, the Troll Archaeology Finds go hand in hand. Wetlands, Badlands and Burning Steppes are all known for their dwarven dwellings - and similarly, so are most the archaeological finds. If animals dominate the land, then appropriately you will often find fossils.
Archaeologically speaking, the Night Elves
thoroughly
dominate Kalimdor, Dwarves and Trolls the Eastern Kingdoms, and Fossils neatly scattered across both. Outlands are only for the Orcs and Draenei archaeological finds. While Northrend is proving most interesting with Night Elvish and Troll Fragments popping up in addition to the expected Nerubian and Vrykul Fragments. For anything Tol'Vir, it's all in Uldum and Uldum alone (will update if this changes). Unfortunately, dig site spawn locations in Uldum share the same continent as Kalimdor - maximum total of four. This means you're gonna have to keep digging Fossil & Night Elf Frags (among others) all over Kalimdor in order to possibly have the Uldum dig sites spawn. Stay tuned!
There are always exceptions to every rule, but you'll find by and large that the above theory holds true. For those of you seeking dig site locations only, see below.
Fossil Archaeology Fragments

Desolace - Valley of Bones, Kodo Graveyard, Valley of Spears (at the eastern exit)
Dustwallow Marsh - south of Direhorn Post, Wyrmbog, Dragonmurk, Quagmire
Stonetalon Mountains - Unearthed Grounds
Southern Barrens - Fields of Blood

Troll Archaeology Fragments
Dwarf Archaeology Fragments
Night Elf Archaeology Fragments
Draenei Archaeology Fragments
Orc Archaeology Fragments
Vrykul Archaeology Fragments
Nerubian Archaeology Fragments
Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments
Mogu Archaeology Fragments
- STILL IN PROGRESS
Pandaren Archaeology Fragments
- STILL IN PROGRESS
For a complete tally of ALL the archaeology solves you have slaved through, use the following macro (updated for MoP):
/run print("Total artifacts"); for x=1,12 do local c=GetNumArtifactsByRace(x); local a =0; for y=1,c do local t = select(9, GetArtifactInfoByRace(x, y)); a=a+t;end local rn = GetArchaeologyRaceInfo(x); if( c > 1 ) then print(rn .. ": " .. a); end end
This will produce a list like this:
Total artifacts
Dwarf: 44
Draenei: 11
Fossil: 64
Night Elf: 179
Nerubian: 4
Orc: 12
Tol'vir: 128
Troll: 87
Vrykul: 8
Pandaren: 25
Mogu: 26

The site says you need a skill level of 525 to get the pet Raptor from the fossils... my skill level is 155 and I am building the Fossilized Hatchling right now :)

I got the fossilized hatchling then immediately after I got the fossilized raptor.
Again have no idea why this was downrated. Its possible to get them one after the other.

I came across a "You can't carry any more of that item" message when topping 200 fossil fragments collected. Did Blizz put a cap on these now? Boo to them if so!

It would be nice if being fragment-capped for a specific race prevented new dig sites from spawning for that specific race (assuming you've already completed all the artifacts for that race as well). I'm grinding Troll trying to get
Zin'rokh, Destroyer of Patience
, yet I keep getting Dwarf, Fossil, and even Night Elf dig sites even tho I've completed every single artifact for those races. But that would just be too nice, so it's unlikely.

Im not sure im understanding some of the posts above, specificly the ones on useless fragment of races you have completed. In order to complete all races you will indeed have to dig for fragments you dont need in order to force another dig site. Although these "Useless" fragments are not needed you might as well turn them into artifacts, they are worth some kind of gold, you may not get rich from it, but gold is gold. I have finished 5 of 9 races so far, Tol'vir being the furthest off, I am cringing at the thought of having to force that dig site in Uldum, so who knows maybe I will be rich by the time Im done with all of em.

I believe amount of fragments you can get was increased this last patch since I just got 7 fossil fragments in one survey (not sure if this applies to all types of dig sites or just fossil ones, I haven't tested them all). This could also be because of the new Darkmoon Faire quest "Fun for the Little Ones" which is the Archaeology daily, maybe while on this daily you get an increased amount? Can anyone confirm this?
update: increased drop for all of them it seems =D

Do the names of the dig sites have anything to do with what types of artifacts spawn there? Or is it completely random? If not, it would be nice to see what dig sites spawn which type to make it easier to figure out where to go.

Fun fact from a professional geologist....
The fossil on the fossil fragment is of a Trilobite. They were shallow sea dwelling creatures that flourished for over 270 million years from the Cambrian to Permian period in geologic time. *Note this is in RL!

"Do the names of the dig sites have anything to do with what types of artifacts spawn there? Or is it completely random?" if you know enough about the lore of WoW, and you have some common sense you can usually make a fair assumption on what artifacts you will find in a site based on its name alone.

I'm mainly trying to get the raptor for 100 mount achiev and wondering if anyone knows if it spawns more fossil digsites in Eastern Kingdoms or Kalimdor?

If you're like me, and can't seem to get a fossil dig site to pop (even though you have not completed most of the rares), you can also buy
crates of fossil fragments
from
Brann Bronzebeard
in Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Each crate gives you between 5-10 fragments. You essentially have to be level 90 to get to him, as he's located in the upper part of Mogu'Shan Palace, which is only accessible by flying. The currency is
Restored Artifacts
.

Can anyone explaine why there are Fragments listet under Drops from Mobs?

Is the "Dropped By" section totally incorrect? I killed and killed and killed, and got not one fragment. Also, by doing various digsites, I got no fragments either. I'm trying to do this for the Darkmoon quest, been at it for a couple hours but no joy. my Arch level is over 400. Any help/ideas appreciated.

Fossil Fragments can be gathered in Tanaris in the Abyssal Sands near the big creature skeletons, and in Northern Stranglethorn near Grom'gol.

@ Hordack,
Trilobites actually lived throughout the Permian Period and until the Triassic Period. The Permian ended with the largest mass extinction in Earth's history. This Permian/Triassic extinction event, in which nearly 90% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial species died out, was the ultimate demise of the Trilobite lineage. It would take millions of years into the Triassic for life to recover from this catastrophe. The Permian Period is also known as the time that all land masses were grouped into one super-continent that we call Pangaea today.

Finding fossil fragments is insufferable just to complete Fun for little ones takes a hour, makes a bad profession even worse. After wasting 3 hours of game time on it this year I have come to the conclusion the fastest way for a amateur to get them is to go to pandaria and dig. That way no matter what you dig up you can turn in for crates of fossil fragments from Brann Bronzebeard @ 83.6-31.0

As of September 2018, it seems like the game is trying to prevent me from getting fossil fragments (which is really annoying when I'm trying to complete Fun for the Little Ones). The game keeps spawning dig sites at the same troll and dwarf locations in The Hinterlands, the Badlands, and Stranglethorn Vale, and even some Nerubian locations in the Eastern Plaguelands, and not a single fossil location.

tl;dr: 1) Go to eastern continent of vanilla map 2) Find fossil dig site 3) If there isn't one: dig others so one spawns.
