Last night, Blizzard hotfixed a command that allowed players to increase their Nameplate distance. The maximum range for Classic WoW nameplates is now 20 yards for all player's friendly and enemy nameplates.
How Did It Work?
Similar to live WoW, the cVar for "nameplateMaxDistance" exists but is supposed to be protected and unable to be changed in Classic, to keep all players at 20 yard nameplates. This means that if you typed in the following, nothing should happen.
/run SetCVar("nameplateMaxDistance", "60")
However, players found out that if you typed the variable in scientific notation, the game would accept the command and change your nameplate distance.
/run SetCVar("nameplateMaxDistance", "6e1")
This means that you could have nameplates as far as you want. 40 yards? 60 yards? How about 200 yards? As long as you typed it in scientific notation, the game would accept it. There's an upper limit because of render distance but you were previously able to customize your nameplate distance.
/run SetCVar("nameplateMaxDistance", "4e1")
/run SetCVar("nameplateMaxDistance", "6e1")
/run SetCVar("nameplateMaxDistance", "2e2")

After Hotfix
All nameplate distance is capped at 20 yards for both enemy and friendly nameplates. Ranged who are standing at range will not longer be able to see the nameplate of the thing they are shooting at.
