Opinion: Is Healing a Cosmetic Role in Mythic+? - 4 DPS & No Healer Keys

As of late, there has been a lot of discussion revolving around healer's role in Mythic+ with the resurgence of 1 tank, 4 DPS keys.
Introduction
This particular discussion stems from a few places, but lets start at the beginning.
Zmok
for the past few seasons has been attempting to push as high as possible running 4 DPS and 1 Protection Paladin. With this setup, he has had varying success, but typically is in the Rank 1 title range for M+. This season, Zmok has had significantly more success though with this setup as off healing provided from Protection Paladin + Hybrid healing is quite potent. This allows him to post screenshots like
this
on twitter. With these screenshots floating around, other members of the M+ community have also decided to try runs with 4 DPS and a Protection Paladin such as
Nerf's 28 Court of Stars
.
In addition to people having decent success on live with variations of this setup, teams in the most recent
MDI
decided that no healer was a strategy that they could employ. However, this strategy during the MDI was only seen in Court of Stars, as all other dungeons had healers participating.
All of this has healers talking and I talk about this and some of the community reactions in this video:
The Issue
Healers are seen as a mandatory role in Mythic+ by many. With the ability to be able to omit a healer in near bleeding edge keys, this has many healers annoyed at the state of their role. With members of the M+ community weighing in such as
AutomaticJak
,
Jdotb
, and
Naguura
. Ultimately they have similar goals with what they are saying, which is that healers should have a spot in M+. Going too far into the direction where the best composition does not involve a healer is a dangerous game.
Now we are quite far off of a reality where healers are omitted fully, as only two of the
Top 1000 runs in the world
have an absence of a healer, but the proof of concept is certainly there with one of these runs being in the top 50.
Causes of This Problem
As you might have noticed, there is not one concrete cause of this issue as people have cited different origins. With that being the case there are a few reasons we will discuss that cause this:
Healing in dungeons:
Healing just as a concept is very weird in M+ dungeons. Infrequently is there consistent AOE damage, meaning more often than not, healers have nothing to heal in a dungeon outside of the tank. This allows them to either optimize things such as DPS or CC. When talking to top healers, they typically cite that around 50% of their globals are spent on healing. Whenever tanks are self sufficient like they are this season, this leaves very little to heal outside of very specific pulls or bosses. That ultimately allows you to get closer to non healer comps.
Healing "Checks":
As discussed by Jak above, healing "checks" in dungeons are in a weird spot. The reason they are weird is because functionally they cannot exist with the current state of healer balance. If you think back to the beginning of the season, healers like Restoration Shaman struggled to heal 22 Tyrannical Raging Tempest on the MDI broadcast meanwhile Restoration Druid / Preservation Evokers were breezing through 25s. This creates a weird dynamic where the content is possible but challenging for some healers but near impossible for others. Ultimately this causes things such as Raging Tempest, Advisor Melandrus, and other similar bosses to get nerfed, making the "checks" more accessible for all healers (and potentially tanks).
Hybrid Healing:
With the reworking of class talent trees, many of the hybrid DPS are able to do a large amount of healing with things such as
Abrazo vampírico
,
Vigilia de la Naturaleza
, and
Guía ancestral
. These cooldowns coupled with healing specifically from Protection Paladin's
Palabra de gloria
allow for much of the healing in your dungeon to be covered.
Now this does not cover the whole thing, but typically Enhancement Shaman is the spec to bridge the gap between impossible to possible for this. They will frequently sacrifice utility in some capacity in order to run significantly more healing. Talenting things such as
Sanación en cadena
and
Tótem Corriente de sanación
. The builds that amplify these abilities allow the Enhance + Paladin combo typically to be able to outheal the 1 or 2 healing "checks" you have per dungeon.
Is This An Issue?
This part is very subjective. At the current moment, this strategy seems very niche. With that being the case, I'm hesitant to say that niche strategies that seem to be slightly worse than optimal strategies for dungeons need sweeping changes. Unless no healer keys became the "meta" strategy, I think massive changes would be a detriment as it opens up interesting gameplay.
As for the future of the healing role, this is a tricky one. Whenever you are spending half your globals on healing and the other half of your time DPSing or providing CC, it is very strange. The healer in M+ is very much a "support" role in the sense of they do the things in the dungeon that the Tank / DPS cannot. After you hit the minimal floor of healing required in a dungeon, the best way you can improve your chance of success is to do these jobs or DPSing. At the same point, healers do not want to heal the tank and tanks also want agency over their own survivability. This leaves the role in a weird state where it lacks a firm identity.
