This is the best craftable mace so far, and a very nice weapon at that. Good for people who cannot raid for better gear. Best pre-raid mace there is, actually. Great for warriors/shamans/paladins/rogues =D However, the materials are VERY expensive, making this a tad difficult to obtain. Solid mace for any melee class, though.

This recipe, along with all other BoE Blacksmithing and Leatherworking plans, no longer requires specialization.
Specialization will be required in BC for BoP items.

Assuming that Empyrian procs around once every 2 minutes of fighting, and ignoring your original energy store (so only one SS per 4 sec), Ebon hand is a miniscule amount (<1 DPS)than Empyrian at 700 ATP.
My calculations come heavily on Vodar's mace chart (
http://shadowpanther.net/wow.htm
) with calculations added in for ATP, Empy proc, and for SS every 4 seconds. The formula isn't perfect, but it's pretty good.
With Instant VI on, The ebon hand is acutally slightly better than the Empy due to increased poison procs.

I hate to say it.... I REALLY hate to say it...
I worked VERY VERY hard at getting exalted with Thorium Brotherhood. I slaved for 4 weeks and it really sucked when Blizzard implemented the server side patch that made it so that I could only enter BRD instance 5 times in an hour to collect Dark Iron. It just added to the overall lengthy process of getting exalted.
Thankfully I had already gotten revered before Blizzard implemented the patch.
Anyhow, I made this mace last night and was very excited about what it could do. As stated earlier I have the Empyrean Demolisher in my mainhand and thought that this mace would be stellar in my offhand.
Needless to say I ain't too happy with the proc. The proc goes off like 1 in 20 fights. That is ridiculous! My Empyrean Demolisher procs, on average, 2 times a fight.
I am, however, happy to be back to using 2 maces again. The added maces increases my chance to stun seeing as I am a combat/mace spec'd rogue.
If I had to do over again... after seeing the results of the Ebon Hand... I would have never done it... get exalted that is...
Not sure what else to say other than the fact I hope that Blizzard fixes the proc on it.
I will say that when I crit with it... on cloth, in my offhand mind you, I am seeing upwards of 300 to 400... THAT is way cool considering I crit often...

This is what it looks like with Dark Iron armor + Skullflame.

...Yes, I know I need a new belt.
Madsoup on Alliance-Destromath can make this mace.

Some of you have probably been wondering which route you will take to get this great hammer.
The orginal mats for the last patch were nuts. 8 lava core and 14 fiery to start, which is why you never saw any getting built, and is the reason Blizzard decided to lighten up a bit on this one.
I went back and forth until the core materials were cut in half, which more or less made my decision for me. I'll tell you how I got it and then let other posts debate on what's better for them.
It really comes down to how you spend your time in WoW.
If you're a Blacksmith, you need to get exalted with the Thorium Brotherhood. That's not only going to take a lot of time, but also take a lot of money as well, paying off the dwarves with lots and lots of bars, which means you either will be farming whatever and exchanging them for dwarf mats, or just mining directly and giving everything to them. Even after you get exalted you'll need to come up with the mats for this hammer, and they are steep, but not as steep as they used to be. The revised stats are:
4 Lava Core (used to be 8)
7 Fiery Core (used to be 14)
12 Arcanite Bars
8 Dark Iron Bars
4 Azerothian Diamonds
A pricy venture to be sure. You could try to farm all this stuff yourself, doing Molten runs, getting an arcane crystal from Rich Thorium, then paying someone to change it to arcanite.
Or...
You could just do whatever it is you do, and buy them outright. I played the auction house, buying and selling a lot of items, spending the time to do libram quests and selling the lesser arcanums, anything to make gold without buying it from the Chinese, and in less than 3 weeks, had purchased the mats at good prices. Average price (on Dunemaul Alliance) was as follows:
4 Lava Core, (125g each) 500g
7 Fiery Core (130g each) 910g
12 Arcanite Bars (33g each) 264g
8 Dark Iron Bars (9g each) 72g
4 Azerothian Diamonds (6g each)24g
For a grand total (approximate) of 1770g. Let's not forget industry standard tip of 1 lava core, so tack on another 120g, rounding up to around 1900.
I'll also note that I offered the builder (mikerelder, take a bow Mike) 200g instead of a lava core for his time. He declined and accepted the core instead because of it's rarity.
1900g, 3 weeks, and no faction grinding. The prices above are not normal by any means. Most people wouldn't sell a core for less than 175-200, but for some reason I kept running into people in the early morning hours who I suspected were raiding their guild bank, or maybe a guild went down, not sure, but they were always desperate for cash.
If you are in a hurry, you could spend just a few days buying these mats, but the price could jump to around 3000, depending on how much the cores go for. Always wait a while for the better deals to come around.
So there's your choice: Spend the time, get exalted yourself, give 1500+g in mats to the dwarves, then get the mats for the hammer, or just sell what you usually sell and buy the mats outright.
And for those of you who say that they don't know anyone who can make the hammer, I offer this:
I haven't been in a guild for a year, and it took all of 3 days to find someone who could make this hammer. If you have a huge guild on your server, chances are they've got someone exalted in Thorium Brotherhood. Just ask around, you'll find them.
Hammer is great by the way. Shadow damage has a cool little proc, and it goes off for me at least twice every fight. Now if I could only get that jagged obsidian shield built...

I think it's the coolest thing for a smith to build someone like that.
Sadly reaching exalted only gives you 1 plan as a master-hammersmith.
There should be many more different weapon-plans to get.
Somehow being lvl 60 makes it more important to run
instances in raid groupes than proceeding in your professions. Something Blizz should change to keep players without time for raids stick to the game.

This is a reference to Magic: the Gathering card game. The Ebon Hand was a cult of necromancers and zombies during the beggining of the games history

I just crafted this hammer last night. Here is a picture:
http://img381.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ebonhand7yv.jpg
It requires exalted with the Thorium Brotherhood and the Black Anvil in BRD to make it on.
Message me on Windrunner.

This is basically the best and the only rogue offhand epic mace.
However, that doesn't mean it's not a fine mainhand mace, as well.
Particularly with normalized attack speeds, and the big proc on this thing, a rogue could od very nicely with this in mainhand. Depending on your build, you could do a little bit more total damage with this guy than with the Empyrean demolisher (SS will be lower, but white damage higher, plus the proc is nice). Still, obviously if you've got both, mainhand the demolisher because you won't find a better offhand than this.
Practically speaking, getting the cores for this requires either a) going into MC witha VERY experienced MC guild that already has all the fire resist gear it needs,
or b) going in with a pickup group--probably won't get too many boss kills (although on some servers PUG's can get 3 or 4) but you will get some cores--and there won't be any guild oversight forcing you to put those cores towards fire resist gear.
On thought: see if you can find a master hammersmith trying to get exhalted with TB. Offer to trade him dark iron for cores... he gets rep either way, and you get the materials to make this hammer and the guy who'll make it for you.

its not the best mace offhand. Best is Anubisath Warhammer.

My guess its a 1ppm sort of thing.
I was getting about 1 proc per 70 hits while using this, but I was also dual wielding with this mainhand and a 1.7 speed weapon offhand.
A little comparison. It did about one third of the damage that my Maelstrom trinket did. Its kinda nice, but I wouldnt say the proc is great.

anyone know how often the proc goes off when equipped in the main hand?

If your looking to have this crafted contact Ravon Alliance with mats pluss 500 gold or 2 cores.
Thanks

Might be a stupid question, so sorry in advance ;)
As fair as I can see, this isn't unique and it's not a main hand weapon. So... You can make two and dual wield them, right?

I knew there was a reason why I became Hammersmith. Finally a weapon that is worth making.
Thanks Blizzard for letting us be able to make something which is clearly inferior to everything that drops everywhere.
Edit: I cant wait to see the graphics. =) That good item must look like crap.

Unfortunately the effort to craft this mace isn't really worth it. For tanks,
Mirah's Song
is just too easy to obtain and too well rounded to pass up in favor of this mace. It's not a sword or dagger so rogues won't be able to get the weapon skill they need either. If anything, I could see this being used in fringe cases by specifically human fury warriors who haven't been able to get
Dal'Rend main hand
or
Ironfoe
to drop. I mean, it's probably better mh than
Serathil
at the very least...
Still, even in cases where it's technically better, it's just not worth it. Even after MC has been out for almost a year the mats are still prohibitively expensive, and you're much better off just waiting until raid gear drops.
However, I do have to admit that it looks dope.
