WoW Classic Hunter Pets
Taming pets is an iconic part of the Hunter class in WoW Classic.
There are several different types of pet families, appearances, and effectiveness which have different abilities and excel in different situations, such as Turtles mitigating damage. Managing these pets can be a task in of itself, however, as pets not only have their own health and cooldowns to keep track of, but also require proper feeding to maintain happiness to keep it from abandoning the player.
Beast Lore will provide information as to which mobs are tameable, their capabilities, food preference, and the like. Pets are also susceptible to not only direct damage but AoE damage, making them very fragile in some raid encounters, so savvy Hunters must manage their position as well as their health.
Hunters may only have one active pet at a time but can stable up to two more with Stable Master NPCs found in most friendly hubs.
If you need tips on how to master your Hunter in WoW Classic, check out our Hunter PvE Guide or Hunter PvP Guide.
Taming Hunter Pets in WoW Classic
Taming pets in Classic WoW is very similar to how it is in Battle for Azeroth, with a few exceptions.
Only the Beast pet family is tamable as other pet families have not been introduced yet.
Scaling has not been introduced yet so you may only tame a beast that is your level or lower.
You cannot tame a beast that is a higher level than you are.
When taming, the Hunter becomes vulnerable, losing 100% armor while channeling Tame Pet. Because of this, it is essential to use abilities such as
震荡射击
,
翼龙钉刺
,
, and
to your advantage. On stronger beasts, it may be advisable to bring along a Druid or Mage friend to keep the beast
ed or
d.
You can only have three pets at once; one active one and two at the stablemaster. However, when you are in the process of taming pets to unlock abilities, you should keep one free slot open. That way, you can keep taming and releasing pets without having to give up one of your key pets.
You can also tame Hunter pets starting at level 10. This means from level 1 through 10 you are on your own! We have a section in our Hunter Leveling Guide on how to level up before owning a pet, as well as Hunter Class Quest Walkthroughs on how to obtain your first pet.

Feeding your WoW Classic Pets
Pet Happiness and Loyalty
Ppets have a happiness level and in order to maintain your pets happiness, you must feed it. Feeding your pet is very important for overall output. The happier your pet is, the more damage it deals:
Happy: 125% damage
Content: 100% damage
Unhappy: 75% damage
In addition, pets gain training points based on their loyalty and level, using the formula:
(level)*(loyalty-1)
There are six loyalty ranks total, so the maximum amount of training points is 300, for a Rank 6 Level 60 Hunter Pet.
Classic Hunter Pet Diets
Across the world of Classic Azeroth, there are a total of 6 different foods you can feed to your pet. Pets can eat up to six different types of food: meat, bread, fish, fruit, fungus, and cheese. Here are the typical locations of finding these foods.
Bread (
魔法面包
/
刚出炉的面包
) - Typically conjured from Mages or sold by vendors.
Cheese (
节日奶酪圈
) - Sold by Cheese vendors.
Fish (
血肚鱼
/
收获节鱼肉
) - Fished up from seas and ponds. Also sold by Fish Vendors.
Fruit (
新鲜的红苹果
) - Sold by Fruit vendors
Fungus (
森林蘑菇
) - Dropped by certain mobs and can be Herbed. Also sold by Fungus vendor in Undercity.
Meat (
腰窝肉
) - Dropped by certain mobs and sold by Meat vendors.
Each pet family will only eat certain foods. Some pets, like wolves, will only eat meat, but bears and boars can eat any of the six food types. So keep that in mind when looking to tame certain pets.
野兽知识
will show you what types of food that pet likes to eat.

WoW Classic Hunter Pet Categories
In Classic WoW, Hunter pets are classified under 3 different categories. There are no Exotic Hunter Pets, as there are in BFA for Beast Mastery Hunters.
Defense Pets
- Defensive pets typically have higher health or armor and can withstand more attacks. It will generally have a slower attack speed and deal slightly less damage. Typically defense pets aren't very useful except for boars that may be used in PvP.
Offense Pets
- Usually deal more damage than other pets but typically have less health or armor. Offense pets also will generally have a faster attack speed and generate more threat. A strong choice for open-world content or PvP.
General Pets
- These pets are fairly sturdy and deal a moderate amount of damage. They are decent at both tankiness and DPS but are not excellent in either. General pets such as Wolves are typically best suited for raiding.
Keep in mind that these are general inclinations, not hard and fast laws. An owl can tank perfectly well if you spec it for that - it's just that it will never be able to take quite as much punishment as a defensive-specced bear. That's important so I'll say it again: The difference between different classes of pets is less than 5%, so the most important thing is to find something that suits your play style, that's easy for you to feed and that you don't mind looking at.

Pet Stat Modifiers
Pets of each family in Classic WoW have a few stat modifiers that make up their level of power. In the table below you will see these calculated as .01= 1%. So, for example, the
豹
has 1.10 damage, meaning it deals 10% more damage with each ability or attack it uses. Whereas an
猛禽
has 1.07 damage meaning it deals 7% more damage.
But taking into account the other stats a pet has as well as abilities are important too. For example, the cat has 0.98 HP while the owl has 1.00 HP meaning that that cats have -2% HP and owls have a standard amount making owls needed to be healed less so you save more mana. Owls also have the ability
which has no cooldown and is AoE meaning any melee mobs you fight will deal less damage, just adding a little bit more tankiness to the owl than the cat which has a special ability
to allow it to go stealth. With that in mind, the highest stats doesn't always equal best pet for the situation.
The same goes for tanking pets. Some may have higher health and armor but they may lack a cool down or ability that could be useful in certain situations. For instance, the
熊
family has more health, only a little less armor and does more damage plus has an extra damage ability compared to the
海龟
family. But Bears lack any unique special ability compared to Turtles which have
甲壳护盾
, a cooldown that could potentially save you in a dire situation. So while overall a Bear might be better for general use a Turtle could make certain hard to defeat mobs such as rares or elites a lot easier.

Attack Speeds
Similar to Battle for Azeroth, some pets have different attack speeds. Different attack speeds mean that some pets will have slower attack swings while some pets have faster attack swings. The slower attacking pets will typically deal more damage per swing while faster-attacking pets deal less damage per swing. For the most part, the damage remains the same, however, in Classic, this matters more.
Spell Push Back
- Spell push back is present in Classic WoW, meaning that every melee attack that hits someone casting a spell will be delayed slightly. Pets such as Broken Tooth are overpowered due to its quick attack speed.
Threat Generation
- Tankier pets with slower attack speed often hit harder, which generates more threat per hit. However, tank pets often have a difficult time maintaining threat due to their slow attack speed. It is recommended to use a pet with quicker attack speeds. Fast attacking pets and offense-oriented pets generate more overall threat and are able to maintain it better.
Training your Classic Hunter Pets
In Battle for Azeroth, pets are automatically the same level as you, and innately have certain skills and abilities depending on what pet family it is. This is not the case in Classic as this system is drastically different.
In Classic WoW, pets have an experience bar just the same as you. Pets gain experience by fighting alongside you. They do not benefit from rested experience or quest rewards. When the pet reaches the same level as the Hunter, they stop gaining experience until the Hunter also levels up, meaning that your pets will always lag behind slightly.
Some pets know a skill or two already when you tame them, but most pets need to be trained to learn additional skills. In order to teach your pet a skill, you must first know it yourself.
There are two ways for you to learn a pet skill: some skills you can learn from a pet trainer in town, and some skills you learn from taming creatures that know the skill already.
In addition, each ability has several ranks, with higher ranks requiring higher Hunter Pet levels and training points. Training a higher rank of an ability will refund the cost of the lower rank.
We have created a calculator showing all the TP costs and available abilities so you can plan out your pet:
Classic Hunter Training Calc
Pet Abilities from Classic Trainers
Here are some pet skills that can be taught by trainers:
低吼
Your pet taunts the target, increasing the likelihood attacks will be directed at your pet.
- Increases your pets Stamina.
- Increases your pets Armor.
- Increases Arcane resistance.
- Increases Fire resistance.
- Increases Frost resistance.
- Increases Nature resistance.
- Increases Shadow resistance.
Pet Abilities from Classic Taming
Most pet skills are taught by taming creatures that already know the ability. To learn a pet skill from a pet in the wild, you must first stable your current pet and go out into the wild to tame the beast that knows your desired skill. To learn the skill, take your newly tamed beast out in the wild and use the skill. Doing so will teach you that specific skill. Once you have learned the desired skill, it is safe to abandon your new pet if you so desire.
Starting at level 24, you can use
野兽知识
to see what abilities a beast in the wild will grant.
Here are the skills that much be learned via taming:
撕咬
- Bite the enemy, dealing additional damage.
- Charge the enemy, immobilizing them for 1 sec and adding additional damage to your pets next attack.
爪击
- Claw the enemy, dealing additional damage.
- Deals no damage, but lowers your threat generation.
急奔
- Increases movement speed by 50% for 15 sec. Does not break prowling.
- Increases movement speed by 40% for 15 sec.
- Party members receive additional damage on their next physical attack.
- Breathe lightning instantly dealing nature damage.
潜伏
- Puts your pet in stealth, but slows its movement speed by 50%. Your pets next attack will deal 20% bonus damage.
蝎毒
- Inflicts nature damage, stacking up to 5 times on a target.
血腥尖啸
- Deals moderate damage and lowers the physical damage dealt by all enemies within melee range for 4 sec.
甲壳护盾
- Reduces all damage your pet takes by 50% but increases the time between your pets attacks by 43%.
- Shakes the ground dealing damage to all enemies within 8 yards.
Spending Training Points
Once you have learned a new pet skill, you may teach it to any pet you own as long as that pet is capable of learning that skill. In addition, your pet must have enough training points to learn that skill. Pets gain training points based on their loyalty and level. As they level up and become happier with you, they gain more points. Growl can always be trained for free, even if the pet has zero training points.
Training is located in the general tab under your spellbook. Simply click on the tab, open up
and browse through your learned skills. Skills in grey indicate that your current pet has already learned that skill. Details and requirements of the skill can be shown by clicking on the specific skill.
Below we have posted what is the cost for the maximum rank of each ability, what tames unlock it. and the TP costs. For a full list of all ability ranks and unlocks, please check out
Classic Petopia
.
Pets can only have four active abilities learned at once, and they are also limited by their amount of TP, so it is important to plan your ability path in advance. A level 60 Rank 6 Loyalty pet will have 300 TP to spend.

Recommended Hunter Pet Families for WoW Classic Endgame Content
Here are some recommendations as to the best Hunter Pets for WoW Classic endgame content.
Wolf Classic Hunter Pets
A wolf is almost a necessity for endgame raiding.
allows the wolf to stay away from harm, while still being useful and increasing damage.
Most Hunter pets, especially pets for Marksman or Survival Hunters, are outclassed by many endgame raid mechanics in Classic. Having the ability to use Furious Howl from afar and still benefit the raid is very useful. Since they are a general pet, they have a decent amount of tankiness but still do a solid amount of damage.
Cat Classic Hunter Pets
Cats are well suited for all types of content due to their high offensive capability along with their high attack speed. They are very strong in PvP due to their ability to interrupt spell casting. Cats are also one of the best pets for leveling since their fast attack speeds and damage allow them to maintain the most threat.
Wind Serpent Classic Hunter Pets
Wind Serpents are extremely useful in end game content. When melee gets rough, you can pull them back and still deal a solid amount of damage as their
allows them to attack from afar. In addition, their
ignores armor so they are able to deal significant damage to raid bosses. Wind Serpents are also a solid choice for leveling.
Boar Classic Hunter Pets
Boars are a solid option for PvP. Their
is the only useful active ability and of course, an additional immobilize is always useful in PvP. Their high health pool, paired with some resistance makes them able to withstand a fair amount of damage while still being able to output a decent amount of damage as well.
Best Hunter Pets in WoW Classic
Some Hunter Pets in WoW Classic have distinctive attributes, making them especially viable. We recommend obtaining a wolf from LBRS,
断牙
and
哈卡之子
in Classic WoW.
Wolves from LBRS
狼
are the best PvE pet to have due to
. You can get Furious Howl from any wolf, however, the ones from LBRS have the highest rank of Furious Howl that you can obtain in Phase 1 (The wolves in AV also have it, but that's not being released until a later Phase). While not required, taming these to obtain the highest rank of Furious Howl is highly recommended if you plan to raid.
断牙
Broken Tooth belongs to the
豹
family. Like most cats, he is an offense-oriented pet. His pet family ability is
which helps but is nothing to scoff at. The reason Broken Tooth is unique is due to his abnormally fast attack speed. Broken Tooth has the fastest attack speed in the game clocking in at 1 attack per second (compared to that have attack speeds ranging from 1.2-2.5). Broken Tooth does not deal any additional damage compared to other cats as each of his abilities hit half as hard. Broken Tooth's insane attack speed is amazing for causing spell push back during PvP and maintains a large amount of threat while in the open world.
哈卡之子
Son of Hakkar is an offense pet. It belongs to the
风蛇
pet family and has the unique ability
. Because Lightning Breath is nature damage, it ignores armor, unlike physical attacks. Aside from being a Wind Serpent, Son of Hakkar is unique because taming the Son of Hakkar is the only way to learn
(Rank 6). I highly recommend taming Son of Hakkar. Of course, technically once you learn the spell, you can tame any Wind Serpent but this requires an additional stable slot!

Lupos will probably not have shadow damage (edit: he does not, as expected). In 1.9 all pet damage was made physical and all the other fun things were removed, like the run speed of the rare raptor, and the 100 resists of the black wolf then or before. All the rare pets will be pretty much just standard pets with the exception of brokentooth and the ZG bat attack speeds, so no reason to run around like a headless chicken and farm pets. Just get what you want, like a scorpion to protect viper sting vs casters, BT or a ZG bat, and a boar and call it good. Wolf for raids 100%.
Quick afternote: The way Blizzard numbers their patches isn't the way we typically expect vs regular "numbers". e.g. patch 1.9 is the 9th update patch after 1.0, so 1.12 would be the 12th patch. Therefore 1.9 is before 1.12 (the classic patch level), even though our math teachers would cringe, yes. ;)

I'm only leaving this comment as an note for those struggling to find where to get there next ranks of pet abilities.
I'm not the owner of this website but I feel I should link it here, as well as give them a good shout-out to the work they've done over the years for hunters, so other hunters who read up here can use it in addition to the information/opinions here.
Petopia!
This website has a nearly complete list which pet have what abilities and which zone to find them in.
Also on Petopia has
this helpful list
of pets organized by attack speeds.
Also, as a side note, and this is purely personal but I've always found Carrion Birds as great dungeon/leveling/soloing pets.
They have Bite, Claw and a Sprint like Felines, but they also have the ability Screech.
Lowering the attack power of enemies can be really useful in while soloing/leveling or in dungeons where they debuff limit isn't being contested.
Screech makes your Bird, or dungeon's Tank, a lot tankier. Removing 100 attack power of all enemies around your pet should not be understated.
Remember that enemies losing attack power effects them
quite a bit
.

Patch 1.3.0 patchnotes:
Fixed a bug where creatures were keeping their innate resistances after being tamed. This was unintentional and the fix will affect all existing pets.
Snarler won't have his resistances when WoW Classic (based on patch 1.12.0) is released.

Thanks for that guide. Really good!
Please add:
- hunter pet gain exp only if player also get it (or doing not gray, but green+ kills) It's important for those ppl, who powerlvl low-lvl pets.
- add info about stables, how many pets player can get into, what price and at what lvl.
Thank you again :)

Just wanted to ask if you would add Aspect of the Monkey as another ability to use when taming. Works wonders.

What about if a pet has an ability they can start off with negative points.

I didn't have any money leveling so when I saw the harvest festival was up outside orgrimmar, I decided I would use that free food for my pet instead. This guide did mention harvest fish if your pet eats fish but the Harvest Boar food works for my meat eating pets. Not that its expensive but its one less thing to spend money on at the moment especially if your not running around with someone who can conjure food.

Each pet needs to level their basic traits on a regular basis by either training at a pet trainer OR BY getting a trait (new or an upgrade) by temporarily using another pet with that particular level of trait.
Petopia has a list of of the available traits, what kind of pet they can be taught to, each trainable pet in the world for that particular trait and level, what upgrade trait(s) this new pet is capable of teaching, where they are located, and the level that they can be trained at:
https://www.wow-petopia.com/classic/abilities.php
Note that MOST of the traits require training points! Guard these training point zealously and do not learn all the new traits you have (I skip the resistances spells myself). You can redo these training points but at a cost. The nice thing is that you GET PAID BACK the training points that you have spent for the previous traits so It may SAY 17 points but will only cost you 4. A new trait will cost what it says it will cost.Try clicking on your new trait to see if you can actually afford the new trait.
Note that it is complicated to learn these new skills for your pet! First, your hunter has to be at or above the level of the pet you wish to train for that new or upgraded trait(s). Next you must stable the pet you want to train and take your previous temporary trained pet or just grab a new temporary pet while going to get your new pet with the trait you wish to learn. Make sure to train your temporary pet so it has things like growl in case you have to fight while traveling to the area that has your desired new training pet.
Go to where Petopia says the pet you wish to get the new traits from, find one at your level, abandon your temporary pet and train your desired pet.
You DO NOT immediately "learn" that new trait say Dash level 1. You only can get this trait when you have USED this new pet for a while and the magic words "You have learned new skill Dash" appear in YELLOW in the general dialogue bar!
Now swap out the pets at the stable master. In your slingshot training window, the new trait should now appear. IF the trait is one that your pet can use AND you have the necessary points AND your pet level is high enough, you can now learn that upgraded or new trait. Note that the cost may be MUCH LOWER due to the refund of your previously learned traits for that upgraded trait so try to learn it and see if you have enough points. Now you pet can learn and use this new trait as long as the pet is AT THAT LEVEL. You pet may be at level 29 but the trait may only be learned at level 30. Check your pet level and how long to the new level in the character pane under the Pet tab.
Remember that your pet can learn many traits. They are listed in the Pet tab in your spellbook (P) screen. Some are passive so they are automatically being used. As for ACTIVE traits, only 4 can be active at any time due to limitations of the pet action bar so you may need to choose. You use active traits by dragging them into a slot on your pet action bar and the ORDER of them on the bar matters. Note that some traits you will learn cannot be used with your particular pet. Only active traits that have been ACTIVATED (with a swirl around them) AND are on your pet action bar are being used. Arrange the order of the traits from right to left to maximize their potential. On my pet cat, I have dash first, then growl, then bite, and finally claw. You can turn them "on or off' by right clicking on them so that the swirl stops (like turning off Growl when partying with a tank but make sure you turn it back on when soloing again). Once again Petopia has this full explanation but not quite as clear as I have written. Thanks to the Petopia folks for their terrific guide.

For me, the most important thing when deciding on a pet is the sounds that it makes. If it is going to be running next to me for days and days of my life, it sure better not make weird noises occasionally, or breath to heavily.

For those trying to raise loyality of fresh tamed 60 lvl pet.
Just fight with 50+ lvl mobs when your pet is happy (green indicator) => loyality will raise to cap (Best Friend) eventually.

I would like to comment on the classification of the pets in Offensive, General (Balanced) and Defensive.
I am not sure who came up with this classification, but in practice there are some inconsistencies in this article as to where some pets belong.
A more consistent Summary of Pets :
Offensive (Low Tank, High DPS) :
Cat, Raptor, Bat, Owl, Spider, Wind Serpent
Balanced (Medium Tank, Medium DPS) :
Gorilla, Tallstrider, Carrion Bird, Hyena, Wolf, Crocolisk.
Defensive (High Tank, Low DPS) :
Crab, Scorpid, Bear, Boar, Turtle.
I'll show this by example of the Gorilla:
The Gorilla is in practice not a Defensive pet but a General balanced pet like a Wolf.
Comparing the stats between a Gorilla and Wolf:
Gorilla :
Defensive modifiers = Health mod : 1.04 - Armor mod : 1.00.
Putting it into relative terms, Health = High and Armor = Low, overal Defensive = Medium
Offensive modifiers = Damage mod : 1.02 = Medium
Tanking bias abilities : Thunderstomp AoE Damage for AoE Tanking.
Passive abilities : Same as Wolf and all other pets, there is no difference in passive abilities between pets.
Wolf :
Defensive modifiers = Health mod : 1.00 - Armor mod : 1.05.
Putting it into relative terms, Health = Medium and Armor = Medium, overal Defensive = Medium
Offensive modifiers = Damage mod : 1.00 = Medium
Single DPS bias abilities : Dash.
Passive abilities : Same as Gorilla and all other pets, there is no difference in passive abilities between pets.
So when comparing the stats, Gorilla's are slightly higher DPS and nearly equal Defensive compared to Wolves. With the ability to AoE damage they have slight tanking advantage on multiple targets. But overall clearly a General balanced pet like the Wolf.
To put things into perspective, below a real Offensive and real Defensive pet:
Cat
Defensive modifiers = Health mod : 0.98 - Armor mod : 1.00.
Putting it into relative terms, Health = Medium and Armor = Low, overal Defensive = Low
Offensive modifiers = Damage mod : 1.10 = High
Single DPS abilities : In addition to Bite, they have Claw and also Dash.
Passive abilities : Same as Turtle and all other pets, there is no difference in passive abilities between pets.
Turtle
Defensive modifiers = Health mod : 1.00 - Armor mod : 1.13.
Putting it into relative terms, Health = Medium and Armor = High, overal Defensive = High
Offensive modifiers = Damage mod : 0.90 = Low
Defensive abilities : Shell Shield
Passive abilities : Same as Cat and all other pets, there is no difference in passive abilities between pets.
Clearly the Cat is an Offensive pet with top DPS stats in addition to the DPS abilities Claw and Dash. The Tank stats are, together with the Raptor, the weakest in the game.
The Turtle is a clear Defensive pet with top Tanking stats, and the tank ability Shell Shield.
P.S. I see another inconsistency, the Boar's health is rated Medium-High while the Gorilla's health is rated High, while they have the exact same health modifier of 1.04. I give them both a rating of High health relative to the other pets. Furthermore I rate the Boar's armor High as well. To differentiate with other pets I rate the Turtle and Crab Very High in Armor and the Bear Very High in Health

You can get Furious Howl from any wolf, however, the ones from LBRS have the highest rank of Furious Howl that you can obtain in Phase 1 (The wolves in AV also have it, but that's not being released until a later Phase).
I can confirm that the wolves in AV do NOT have Furious Howl 4 or any other special ability besides frost resistance.

Dash
- Increases movement speed by 50% for 15 sec. Does not break prowling.
You have used the wrong link to the Dash spell (1850). The correct one should be
Dash
(23099)

All hunter pets have active, and passive abilities they can learn. The active skills differ depending on the pet you have, while the passive abilities are the same for all pets. Please be aware that just because your pet
can
learn a skill, they does not mean you
should
teach it. With the exception of the skill Growl, these skills are taut using trainer points, which have a limited number both initially, and although the increase as your pet's loyal increases have a finite number so you will not be able to teach skill/ranks that a pet can learn
Lets take the popular cat pet as an example:
Active Skills
- these are learned in the wild from pet families that have the skill available.
Offensive
Bite - Bite the enemy, causing damage. (ranks 1-8) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Claw - Claw the enemy, causing damage. (ranks 1-8) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Utility
Cower - Cower, causing no damage but lowering your pet's threat, making the enemy less likely to attack your pet (ranks 1-6) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Dash - Increases movement speed for 15 seconds. (ranks 1-3) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Growl - Taunt the target, increasing the likelyhood the creature will focus attacks on your pet. (ranks 1-7) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Prowl (cat specific skill) - Puts your pet in stealth mode, but slows its movement speed. The first attack from stealth receives a bonus to damage. Lasts until cancelled. (ranks 1-3) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Passive Skills
- these are taught by the pet trainer in major cities.
Buffs
Growl - Taunt the target, increasing the likelyhood the creature will focus attacks on your pet. (ranks 1-7)
Great Stamina - Increases stamina. (ranks 1-10) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Natural Armour Increases armour (ranks 1-10) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Resistances
Arcane - Increases Arcane Resistance (ranks 1-5) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Fire - Increases Fire Resistance (ranks 1-5) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Frost - Increases Frost Resistance (ranks 1-5) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Nature - Increases Nature Resistance (ranks 1-5) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
Shadow - Increases Shadow Resistance (ranks 1-5) This skill costs increasing points at each rank.
The above skills are those availabe to a cat pet either through the pet trainer, or learned off a pet in captivity. As the pet's level increases, more skills/ranks are available and the pet can upgrade existing ones, the existing skills' cost being refunded. At level 60, the pet will have 300 to spend at max loyalty.
The has has a choice of two offensive skills, and the pet can learn both, however bare in mind that with both learned, a huge chuck of the focus pool is devoted to attacking, leaving little left over for other active skills. Of the two, bite is the better in overall performance, so this should be taken over claw if you choose one only.
Of the three utility skills, Cower is pretty much pointless as the majority of the time you will want your pet to take aggro, and in the rare occassions you do not want your pet to take aggo, you would be better off either not sending it into combat in the first place, or dismissing it entirely. Dash is good for mobility, and should always be taken if the pet family has access to it, except perhaps for Boars which have the Charge offensive skill that kinda doubles as a Dash, and although they
can
learn it do not really need it. Prowl is a cat family specific skill, and is situationally useful, but more of an option than a must have. It does provide a 50% damage boost on the intial attack out of stealth however.
For buffs, Growl is a free skill, and should always be taken at max possible. Without growl, your pet can easily lose aggro, so it should always be taken. The remaining two are Great Stamina, providing a flat increase to the health pool, and Natural armour, which decreased
physical
damage taken.
Lastly the resistances all have the same effect of decreasing the amount of damage your pet takes from that particulat school of magic.
Bite rank rank 8 = 25 points
Claw -
Growl rank 7 = 0 points
Cower -
Dash Rank 3 = 25 points
Prowl Rank 3 = 25 points
Natural Armour Rank 10 = 150 points
Great Stamina Rank 6 = 75 points
Total = 300/300
This pet would be great against melee, and reasonably well against solo casters, but poor against multiple casters due to a lack of any magic resistances.
Rank for in any school of magic provides 120 resistance in that field - however, this costs 90 points to achieve. At this point you should consider which schools of magic would be most useful to resist, and that really depends on personal preference; Fire magic is versatile, and dominent in the game, but Frost often slows the pet down. Nature is typically stackable dots, whereas shadow can incapacitate, and arcane tends to be hard hitting solo casts.
That said a better build (for leveling) might be as follows:
Bite rank rank 8 = 25 points
Claw -
Growl rank 7 = 0 points
Cower -
Dash Rank 2 = 20 points
Prowl Rank 1 = 15 points
Natural Armour Rank 7 = 75 points
Great Stamina Rank 6 = 75 points
Frost Resistance Rank 3 = 45 points
Shadow Resistance Rak 3 = 45 points
Total = 300/300
With this build there is a good chance that the pet will resist most attempts to incapacitate it, while still having relatively strong armour, and while the utilities are weaker, they are still available if needed (which is not often in leveling in any case)

Once your current pet uses the ability enough times, chat will have message: "You have learned a new spell: Claw (Rank 2)." for example. No loyalty level required. Only after that your pets can learn this ability.
