There's really no point to follow him when he runs away. I did, and after quite a while of running, he just says "I think I lost them." and despawns.

I followed them running up to 54.5, 43.3, where Mandokir said "I think I lost them.", then they disappeared. The raptor was called my guardian all the time.

Posting this here so that it is visible because I want people to be able to get their pet without the confusion I had. As these are not listed as a chain and truthfully you wont be finishing all the quests chains, rather these are the just quests required to get your raptor. This is for the Alliance, Horde I can't help you.

1.a. Bad Medicine
1.a.1. Just Hatched
1.a.2. I Think She's Hungry
1.b. The Fate of Kurzen
1.b.1. Spared from Madness

At this point you must log out, and log back in inorder to spawn a npc that will be required in the next step.

2. Deep Roots Make certain your pet raptor is out while doing this quest as it will give you the next step here.

3. Favored Skull If you did not complete 1.a.2. you will not be offered this quest as there will be no npc to turn it in. If you have not logged out and back in the npc will not be at the Rebel Camp yet.

6. Bloodlord Mandokir Don't bother chasing him, he runs the farthest I've ever seen an npc go, all the way to 54.5, 43.3 where he claims to have lost you and despawns. This chasing him is what got me confused because I thought I was done and so went and did Zul'Gurub and wondered why I didn't get my pet.

Noooooo! I loved my baby raptor! She was my daughter! *sobs* If you run after him, even if you are right next to him, all that happens is that he runs for a while and then they disappear. Also, while you are chasing them, the raptor will be called your guardian.
