This boss has an ability somewhat like the comets the mobs near the final boss in AQ20 did.

In other words, to avoid the "Brutal Swipe" ability from killing anybody everybody must be clustered together for minimal damage spread around.

Strategy
Nalorakk starts in Troll Form and alternates between it and Bear Form. Have one tank chosen for each form. The tank for Troll Form will eat the mangles. During this form, healers should not have to cast as often and should be able to gain back a little mana and/or conserve it. The tank for Bear Form should not get mangled, but instead will get both bleeds - Lacerating and Rend. During this form, healers keep the tank topped off as much as possible. The tank must also be ready to drink potions or eat healthstones or shield wall if a silence hits the raid when he has both bleed effects on him. When Nalorakk switches form, the appropriate tank for it should immediately taunt to grab the aggro back.

The rest of the raid should stay spread out. This will lessen the amount of damage the raid takes when Nalorakk charges and cleaves anyone near the person he charged. Staying spread out will not stop his AoE silence when in Bear Form from hitting the entire raid.

Tanks should have enough +hit (around 60-100). A failed tank switch leads mostly to a wipe.

Killed him tonight. He puts out good damage on the bear tank. Healers need to be on their toes with silences, keep the tank topped, and you should be good.

Overall, not a complex fight, mainly a gear check. Can you healers heal through the damage? Can your tanks even take the damage, and if both are true, can you last a moderately long fight.

For the last group of trash mobs before the boss.

note: Tanks need to split the bears up so they don't get the de-buff.

-Take down one bear and when they split continue to kill the troll then move to the bear, that has been frost trapped (or slept)
- Now you have a tank free pick up 1 of the 2 that are not on mounts (in my case we had 2 locks and were chain fearing them until we were ready)
- Kill the 'shamans' and always kill the totems as the protection ones will bubble all that is in range from malee' dmg ( and maybe spell dmg)
- Then take down the last mounted troll again catching the mount when it splits with a hunter or a druid sleeping.

and once there dead the boss will not start, that is if you killed the mount close to the stairs.

I don't know if this was mentioned above but both tanks need to stand pretty much right on top of each other, his cleave damage is divided up between how many people are in front of him. Hits for around 5k between two people or 10k on one person.

We used a warlock with 12k hp to soak the charges.

The mob before the boss fight can be CC'd. The Axe Thrower and Spell Caster can be Mind Controlled or sheeped, and mounts can be sleeped.

If things go sideways and a tank dies, the raid can run to the stairs going down - once the boss hits the steps, he will reset and this will allow your raid to recover quickly and possibly still beat the 20 minute timer.

Update: If a tank goes down and the boss is still far from dying, do not panic. Have the remaining tank jog down the stairs while getting heals. As he approaches the stairs, everyone should back off the bosses spawn position. The boss will reset and, if things went well, only the down tank needs a res and rebuffs. As long as the tanking occurred at the foot of the starting dias, the tank should be in range for a quick res.

Explaining this to your raid before you start the fight will make this a much more controlled event and give you more attempts before respawns appear. Regardless, there should never be a raid wipe on this boss.

I'd like to point out that hit rating is not nessacary for the two tanks on this fight. I've downed him twice now, and i've only got 15 hit rating or so. The resist rate on the taunt seems VERY low, and both tanks will never be rage starved during the fight (due to the swipe), which means it's very easy to stay close together on threat throughout the encounter.

A number of times I simply put out a bit more 5 seconds before he switched, then by the time he was in bear I had aggro.

Having a pally as one of the tanks can work well here. When the other tank's (warrior) taunt was resisted I was able to bubble and let him get aggro. Similarly if righteous defense is resisted the paladin can put a blessing of protection on the other tank.

Here is a handy guide for adventurers:

First of all you need two tanks: one for human form (nothing special) and a second for bear form (he hits harder than human form and uses two abilities that can be removed with stoneform so a dwarf warrior would be the best race and class to tank him). The one tanking human form will be second at agro during bear form and the one tanking him during bear form will be second at agro during human form). All melee classes except the two tanks must hit him from behind all the time as he uses an ability that hits two targets and will cause

Phase 1: (human form)
He fights as a humanoid and does low damage and uses no abilities. Only thing you must know is that he will put a debuff on the one tanking him that increase damage taken from two bear effects. I think he can use cleave so tanks must stay close to each other.

Phase 2: (bear form)
He transforms into a bear using three abilities.First is a bleed effect that can be removed with stoneform, something like cleave that will do immense damage if not both tanks are close enough and kill one and wipe will come. Second is silence and your tank will have serious problems if he isn't at 100% with HoTs and bleed plus his last ability that will do instant damage and it will apply a DoT. A resto druid would be really nice as his HoTs can save tank.

Note: mages should apply amplify magic as he will do no spell casting. If one of the tanks die run down the stairs and he will reset. You have some attempts before he resets. If he resets you must clear all the trash until top. Last thing is that pets should be close to the tanks so there is a chance that they take the cleave's damage.

Just a note since I had not seen it anywhere and have checked multiple parses for this fight.

This boss does not deal Crushing Blows, to anyone.

As a side note, our Humanoid form tank(Warrior) kept dying on the first switch. Successfully single tanked with a Feral druid, who dodged something like 144 attacks. 2 Holy pallies with over 1700 +healing both spam healing the druid, Resto Shammy covering the raid. I played my S Priest in the heal group Vamp Touch and Embrace up the whole fight after the Warrior caught downs again. The Druid died with the boss at 1%, Warlock/S Priest DoTs and determination brought a kill with only the healers and a lone 'lock(with 678 HP) left alive when the boss died. It's possible to do this fight wrong and still win.

As a Feral druid, I've dicovered a little trick to migrate The damage dealt to you (as a tank) even further than mentioned before.
If you're tanking normal form then right after he charges away there's a small time of nothingness where you can pop barkskin and shift back into bear form, this is if you're quick to do so.
When I was tanking Bear form, using the timer for when he shifts, I was able to pop barkskin some seconds before he shifts to migrate even more dmg.
Just one small tip to make this fight easier.

P.S. Resilience is always welcome in my case because I was able to reduce damage taken from bleeds by ~7%

When he does the swipe, can mages jump in front of him and ice block in order to save the tanks? or healing pally to throw a bubble on to gain immunity on the damage that is divided

This is the closest boss you can get to a Patchwerk scenario pre-Gorefiend. Very good for judging your stand-and-DPS output for any damage class, since he's only got a couple abilities that mess up damage (silence and charge). Not perfect, and more than likely you'll be missing a few buffs that you'd have in a 25-man, but about as close as you can get.

Using two feral druids to tank, our group found it very useful to have one drop form and assist healing the other whilst not tanking. Of course, deadly boss mods helps to show the timer on his form changes.

I've tanked him 4 times so far as a feral druid. I've realized with my high defense gear i can tank him in his human form easily. While bear form on the other hand was quite undoable without enough resiliance for the bleeds.

Can anyone confirm that he swipe/cleaves in his bear form? Because It looks to me like he doesn't at all

I didn't notice any dmg taken when I wasn't tanking him while he was in bear form standing infront of him.
Although i did notice the bear form tank was taking dmg from cleave while he was in his human form.

Best combo our guild has come up with is me (feral druid) tanking the human form, with the main-tank/shieldtank tanking him in his bear form. I also was able to stop tanking side-by-side with the shield tank and get behind him to help backup heal the shield tank with no problems while he was in bear form. (Seemed to work the best since we only had 2 healers that time and both were slackin on the heals due to the silence i believe)

And oddly enough we have every race of Tanks except Dwarf Tanks for the Bear part. (Looks like Stoneform would help alot)

This boss is damn hard to heal if you have bad tanks. Id say min Hp for tanks is 18k buffed otherwise your raid will wipe for 80% when he does aoe silence in bear form altough its a childs game if u have 20k+ hp tanks... We usually use feral drood for troll and warrior for bear forms. And by the way, if youre a druid and actually not tanking him cause he is in another form , be really careful if you want to innervate some raid member since u can get easily oneshoted by Brutal Swipe if you arent in bear.

One tip for warrior/druid tanks : Taunt resists will ussually lead to a wipe. Don't forget about your aoe taunt in these situations as an emergency backup.

I rarely see more then 1 taunt resist in a boss fight, so having that 1 backup taunt can save an encounter.

You will need two tanks for this encounter. The tanks must share the damage of brutal swipe.

The tanks must switch when Nalorakk switches forms. This prevents a tank from taking extra bleed damage due to mangle. He is tauntable, making tank transitions simple.

Nalorakk does not deal crushing blows, so a feral druid may tank the encounter without added risk.

Ensure the tank in bear form is topped off at all times. If the tank gets hit with both bleeds while the healers are silenced, a tank could lose health very quickly.

Be sure to keep heal over time spells active on the bear form tank to help deal with the silence.
*
Bleed effects may be removed by Divine Shield, Ice Block, Stoneform, or Blessing of Protection.

If you dont kill this boss first try within the timer give up because you wont kill any other bosses in za... Make sure you just have one tank to tank him in troll for and another to tank him in bear form to split the debuff.... thats all you need to know so just kill him but if u dont split the dmg you are screwed

Killed with hunter/prot paladin combo.
Hunter should have a tanking capable pet out, and use taunt when Nalorakk transforms into his bear form. After your stacks wear off, continue as usual.

Oh, and by the way: Blockset is win. Dont use avoidance.

Soloable by a prot paladin (icc/toc 25 gear)

Keep holy shield and sacred shield up at all times. Do not use block gear on this boss(while soloing) if it reduces your max health by more than ~10%, as your seals and judges heal you for more if your health pool is higher.

While he is in troll form you can keep yourself up with just judgement of light. (in this form he applies a debuff that increases bleed damage by 100%)
When he goes bear form switch to seal of light, and at the exact moment when he applies BOTH bleeds you bubble (divine shield).
The next bear form you have to survive, the next after that you HoP yourself etc until the boss is dead. Remember that he ocasionaly silences while in bear form so don't wait until the last second to refresh your holy/sacred shield. Use the time between the survival stages to get yourself back up.

I am unsure if there's an enrage timer but if there is then it is 10 minutes, just like the other bosses in this raid. Flask up , use strenght food or/and replace a trinket with greatness, death'schoice etc if you need more dps for the enrage timer.

This guy was quite difficult, but successfully soloed by my Feral Druid in mostly 264 with a few 277s tank set, including the 4 piece t10 bonus. On the kill, I got really lucky and didn't get any bleeds during the first bear phase. For the second, I used Barkskin, Enrage, and Frenzied Regeneration (not glyphed). For the third bear phase, I used Barkskin, Enrage, and Survival Instincts. He died before the fourth bear phase. Had I not been lucky on the first one, it would have been a lot more difficult because the cooldown for Frenzied Regeneration is slightly too long to use every other bear phase.

Killed as a full wrathful demon lock using my felguard to tank. There were several times where he ended up killing my felguard when he did silence when it was low and had lucky crits. It was a really hard fight and I just kept up bod cow and spammed talented health funnel

Solo'd by a BM Hunter in full t10. Used the generic Beast Mastery Spec and two tanking pets - I used a worm and a bear, but any tenacity combination will do.

Sent the worm out first to take his mangle hits, when he would change forms I would dismiss the worm and summon the bear to take his bear form bleed effects and switch again when he went back into human form.

I used bandages and a health potion to stay up during his charges, but otherwise keep mend pet on and DPS as normal.

Just keep recup up at all times. Save Evasion & Combat Readiness for bear form, still hits like a truck.

I recently did this boss on PTR for the new heroics, very simple.
He still changes to bear form, but as a heroic everything's damage is increase.... By A LOT.
There are a few changes though. In Troll form he will, instead of surge, charge the person farthest away from him. Other than that it is basicly the same.

Soloed as a level 85 balance druid in ilvl 361 gear, stayed in solar eclispe for the entire fight. I had to shift to heal somewhat often, I'd say I had around 40% uptime on lifebloom and rejuv. When he shifts to bear, use barkskin, and make sure you have hots on you asap. I put on my Leaden Despair to be safe, and I got close to it proccing - he still does a lot of damage.

He hits like a wuss by now, drop your Earth Elemental during his bear phase and spam Windshear. Kill, collect free gold, feel like a boss.

Patch 4.1 for lvl 85 heroic dungeon -

Attack boss, keep melee in, ranged and healers out. Pretty much all you need to do is alternate who gets hit first, he hits the person furthest back, and the person who gets hit needs to walk into the melee range, while another stays out to get hit. Damage will increase so alternating is a must. Rest of the fight, easy tank & spank.

On heroic 5 man (patch 4.1)

once someone gets charged by boss once, they have to run in and stand right behind boss because if they get charged again, they will die (1 shots you). once 3 people have been charged i think it resets and everyone can spread apart and start over.

hits tank pretty hard, lots of physical damage and bleeds. thats about it.

I know how much folks appreciate an easy guide. I found an simple process for phase 1:

Everyone (except tank) be out whenever he goes into his troll form (or phase 1).

When you get hit by the charge, move in with the tank. (Melee can freely move in during phase 2).

Make sure to get spread back out when he goes back to phase 1.

True, this may make your melee DPS suffer a little, but - esp. in PUGs- this makes for an easy-to-use rotation (without actually going through the brain damage of assigning one).

EDIT: The reason for this rotation is because each person he charged gets a 20 sec debuff that increase physical damage taken by 500%. In simpler terms, if this guy charges you twice in one round, it's probably a one shot.

And, tanks, NEVER be the one to get charged. It's almost always a wipe.

For those of you seeking information on the fights for Cataclysm's patch 4.1:
This boss has two phases and is usually the 2nd boss killed in order to get the timer achievement.

Phase one:
Nalorakk will put a bleed on that tank that needs to be healed through - the main abilities to watch out for are:

Cleave - Melee DPSers and people that are stacking (more on that below) need to stand on the bosses back.
Charge - Nalorakk will randomly charge a party member. This charge will ONLY occur during phase one and will always hit the person that is FURTHEST away from the boss. Being hit by the charge will deal enormous damage as well as putting a debuff on you that makes you take additional damage when you get charged again.

The charge happens 3 times and can be counter very easily:
Have all the ranged dpsers stand at any varying range away from the boss.
Once a party member gets charged have them move to the bosses back in melee range to avoid being charged again.

If your group does not have 3 ranged, you can always have a melee dpser move out to soak the hit.

Phase one:
Nalorakk transforms into a bear and gains different abilities. He will no longer charge in this phase.
The only ability to watch out for in this phase is

Deafening Roar: He will periodically use Deafening Roar which is an AOE damage/silence spell. The damage is pretty low but the annoying part is the silence which lasts 3 seconds. Healers should be ready to shoot a chunk heal on the tank right when it ends.

Extra info:

The debuff CAN be removed by Ice block and Bubble.
Using this info, 1 person could potentially soak twice (get hit, bubble, get hit again)
You can also use a mage's Cauterize to soak one hit. (Meaning the mage gets charged and debuffed, and gets charged again which would activate Cauterize.)
If the cleave works the same way it did in the raid version, the damage can be split amongst two members in which case a plate dpser could help soak the hit. I'll test this out later and update the post.

Simplest boss fight in the new Zul'Aman, hand down. The first charge only does moderate damage, easily remedied with a HoT while a couple of other folks take their turn getting smacked by him. So long as everyone knows how do tank/heal/dps decently, he's a walk in the park. Heck, the trash before him causes more grief...

He does, however, get a huge bonus for sounding slightly like Watto from Star Wars.

They seem to be immune only in the other half of the platform. If you have hunter in your group let him lay trap just in front of him and pull the axe guy into it using Distracting Shot.
Sadly it took me couple of runs to realize they're not casters and therefore they can be pulled like that... O.o

the boss is easy, i want to know the best method to clear the trash in front of him without wiping 3 or more times. seems they are immune to cc, whats the best method and kill order for taking them down?

They're not immune to CC, just to some kind (pitty I cannot recall which ones). I've done this pull several times CCing those amani freaks (not the bears). I focus on the bears (i'm tank) and CCing just one of the companions, the pull is fairly easy (pretty easy of you can CC both).

Anyway, if they're immune to CC, dps should focus on the Amani'shi Medicine Man -and remember they have totems. Once the Medicine Man is down, focus on the Amani'shi Warbringer, these are the meanest mobs on the pull. The other npcs are easy.

I thought it'd be useful for me to post a strategy for this boss. My guild have killed him twice now.

You need two well geared tanks to do this encounter. They need to have mostly Kara-level gear to tank here.

Nalorakk is the bear avatar in Zul'Aman. He starts in Troll form, but transforms into a bear! He swaps between the forms throughout the fight, a timer such as Deadly Boss Mods will alert you as to when he changes.

Strategy:

-Two tanks stand on top of each other. He does a Brutal Swipe which has its damage split among whoever it hits. So, two tanks standing on top of each other will split the damage.

-One tank takes the Troll Form, the other takes the Bear Form. Tank 1 engages the boss. When he turns into a bear, Tank 2 taunts the boss. When it changes back into a troll, Tank 1 taunts it, etc.

This is necessary because the Troll Form uses Mangle, which increases bleed damage by 100%, while the Bear Form uses two different bleeds. Tanking the Bear Form with the Mangle Debuff is almost certain death, so a tanking rotation is required.

Warriors be ready to use Challenging Shout or Mocking Blow should your taunt fail.

-Stay Spread Out!. He charges at random people from time to time and does a Cleave, so spread out to avoid more thna one person getting hit.

-Silence! The Bear Form uses Deafening Roar, which silences the raid for 4-5 seconds. This is generally when a wipe will take place, so healers do your best to throw some HoTs on the Bear Tank before the silence, and heal him/her fast when you're unsilenced.

Killed him twice now. If you have a beyond karazhan group at least he is easy. Im a tank and tanked him in bear form. Just taunt him after the shapeshift. And don't worry about aggro since he deals damage 2 both tanks in front of him you get hitted a lot. Tanks will be topped on threat meter @ this boss easely. And ofc. The boots dropped for me:) Putting 12 stam gem in and 12 stam enchant on them:)

For the four pack just before Nalorakk this is how our group did it, because this pull is kinda hard:

-You need at least two CC (Mage, Hunter, Warlock, Druid), we used a Lock/Mage combo. The Mage and Lock CC'd the crap out of the two dudes on the right and left (Sheep and Fear).
-You also need at least two tanks (doesn't matter what class), with at least 15k HP. The tanks will need to move in first on the mounted dudes in the middle. Choose which one your DPS will take down first.
-Right around (correct me if i'm wrong) 15%, the mounted guys dismount and the bears swipe for a #$%^ load of dmg. We had a druid shift into bear form to take agro on the bear, while the DPS tried to take down the dude quick. Then switch to the bear, let MT take agro.
-Repeat with second mounted dude.

Allow one CC to continue, then DPS one of the non-mounted dudes. Remember that one of them drops a totem that shields them, so have somebody on those totems asap.

Also, once the fight is over, the boss will agro, EVERYBODY must run back down the steps to reset the boss. Don't worry, the mob will not re-spawn.

Now scroll back up and read how to take down the Boss!

The boss will aggro if you are in his range otherwise he won't. But most of the times you are in range after you pickup and kill the cc'd ones.

What we did after the mounted mobs dismount let the tanks pickup the bear and the rest will nuke the unmounted mob down. They go down asap.

This fight took my group 7times to beat him, but it was worth it because the leather belt dropped and i got it for my rouge. But in the end it cost me 40g to repair but i sitll think fighting this boss is worth it even though yo might die a couple of times.

p.s. make sure you have a great healer or else you will die fast.

Killed this boss in first try, and our team wasnt even geared for end kara, people saying this boss is hard as prince is wrong, this boss is rather easy. three healers was on this, paladin, priest, and healing shammy, paladin with 1500 heal shammy with 1600 and priest with around 1500 aswell..
Two tanks, one warrior and one druid.

I dont mind admitting that as a tier 4 warrior tank, i struggle to survive the duration of this fight. all mobs in ZA seem to hit like trains and i think that T4 gear for the tanks doesnt quite cut it here. Ive been to SSC and TK but this is the first place where i have honestly felt undergeared.

A great method for all the mobs up to this boss is to have multiple priests in the raid to mind control mobs and have them tank each other. Takes a lot of work away from the tanks and is also really useful later in the raid.

I want the helm for my palay healer :)

This fight for healers is ridiculas imo if you dont spam or have alot of em the tanks always die :( but we managed with a palay healing (me) priest healer and shaman healer (using heroism at the end ftw!)

Placing hots on the tanks all the time is so needed plus if all 3 healers try and heal tank while he is low with bigs heals makes him die rly fast always have one healer on permanent little heals. Saying this cos it happened to use twice :)

If you have a Paladin Tanking him and the 2nd Tank somehow dies near the end and you would just need one more phase change to down him, here is a neat trick that I used when my warrior buddy died during the bear phase at around 15%:

I announced major healing on me during the last few seconds I had to take over the bear as well, tanked the next phase as usuall and once he made his final shift, I quickly bubbled and switched it right off before he could reach no. 2 in aggro... it did scare our Warlock through, seeing him rushing at him briefly ;-)

Having removed the bleed debuff with this neat trick, I kept tanking the bear phase and we downed him as usual.

Bubbling is an awesome tool for tanks (e.g. if you MT Gruul, you can remove the Stone/Bomb debuff as well). Make a macro to switch it on and off and you will survive in sutuations, where other tanks would meet their demise.

Its a pretty boring fight, as covered most of Zul'Aman is a healing test, and a tank gear test, off course good dps that can move quickly (under storms on eagle boss, not stack up on dragonhawk, spread out for lynx)

Hex lord and Zuljiin are where it gets very interesting for healers.

Well, this was indeed a long fight. He kept killing our tanks in bear form. That was with 2 healers (pali + druid).

After 4 wipes we devised a new stratergy. We did it with 2 tanks (warriors), 4 healers and 4 dps (mage (me), hunter and 2 rogues). I personally took one mana pot and one mana emerald during the fight... 20 minuts of intense dpsing...

The silence was only for 2 seconds though. not for 5 secs.

Tank and spank fight, but you're gonna need some good geared tanks and some equally good geared healers cause he hits hard. You want to have your tanks topped off all the time. Specialy when he goes into bearform he can remove like 60% health in 1 blow and that's on a good geared druid tank. So that can get ugly with the silence that kicks in too in the bearphase. Priests and Druids should definitly keep the dot('s) on the tank in this phase. Pretty much a gear check for the healers and tanks.

OK our tank rota for this is usually a bear druid taking troll form and a warrior in bear form for these reasons ...

In troll form the bear can dodge more and he will not take much damge -- in troll form less healign is needed

In bear form he does TWO bleeds which are nasty but they are EVEN nastier stacked together which he DOES DO - AND he sometimes SILENCES when there is two bleeds on the tank - making this a hard bit in the fight for your healers - the reason we have a warrior is that in the first silence he can use last stand - sheild wall in the second - trinket in the third ( moroes lucky watch) and keep that up - and a pally can bubble before the silence ^^

okay so everyone here is basically noob, this boss isn't hard, have two tanks sit on top of each other and just sit there taunting when phases change, if you're going for timed chests you want to down the trash as fast as possible and be able to down him under 5 min (if you want to get a 2nd chest off Akilzon that is), if you aren't going for a chest, then take your time and get used to the fight and trash for later attempts at timed chests. Basic strat is a tank n spank with all ranged spread out, melee behind the boss and you want your BEST GEARED tank on BEAR FORM and the other tank on troll, u can say warrior/pally/druid is better for this phase but in the end it doesn't really matter. this is not necessarily a tanks gear check as much as a healer and dps gear check because we go in there for 2 chests and all animal bosses down every reset and i MT it with kara/badge gear and i'm very easy to keep up. basically if your healers suck and your dps are very unskilled, you shouldn't be going into ZA just yet because this boss is a GEAR CHECK

right, this boss is one of the easiest in zul aman.
just have some shamans in case the cleave hits other melee dpsers for chain heal
and have all your melee dpsers behind nalorakk
have hunter put misdirect on main tank, rogues use feint so u dont take aggro.
if you have a priest u can use the fountain or the circle of healing too.

It's very easy boss if you have a HoTs Healer, and the tanks taunt on time.

Mages use Amplify Magic. Also Dwarf Warriors can Stoneform to avoid bleeding effects. Finally holy pallys should use Improved Concentration Aura to reduce silence time.

In phase 1, the troll phase, Nalorakk casts Brutal Strike on the tank.

He also uses Surge on the player the farthest away from him. He will use this ability three times before transitioning. It helps to have a ranged dps and healer alternate the surges. You may want to consider using three different soakers depending on the personal defensive cooldowns of your party.

In phase 2, he turns into a bear. He casts on the tank and Deafening Roar on the party.
