Pygmy Suckerfish are freshwater parasites, and are sometimes found attached to fish caught in open inland water in Northrend (except in Dalaran). They are used to create Pygmy oil, which is made by alchemists who create 1-2 oils per Pygmy Suckerfish. Most if not all alchemists should be able to create these oils, as it's trained early in Northrend.

Pygmy Oil is a reagent for a number of things including flasks and an alchemists stone. It's also drinkable, shrinking you slightly, and if you drink 6-10 oils you will get turned into a Pygmy.

I found them in Sholazar Basin at the marked lake. Drop rate was around 7%, so it took a while. There's no monsters in that area to bother you though.

Standing just on the coast by Vengeance Landing (near the crabs) and casting into open water, the drop on these went something like this:

1st set of 100 catches included 10 Pygmy's

2nd set of 100 catches included 10 Pygmy's

3rd set of 100 catches included 16 Pygmy's

4th set of 100 catches included 11 Pygmy's

I then moved to Echo Cove (Borean Tundra)..and only got about 10 of these in over 200 catches

(ended up with 87 bottles of Pygmy oil, from the 57 fish )

Note that for the purposes of x Fish achievements (where x is 100, 500, 1000, etc.) that this counts as a second fish. So if you have 555 fish for the achievement and catch a Glacial Salmon + a Pygmy Suckerfish, you've now caught 557 fish.

Edit - Wanted to add that this does not count extra toward fishing skill ups, which are based on successful casts and clicks, not actually looting the fish. (You still get the skill ups whether you take the fish or not, just as long as you 'open' the bobber.)

Ah, the good old "New Content, Fish Away for 10x Gold" applies to this as well.

I used to make all my money off Mudfish from Outlands, but this is my new income maker. At level 67, getting upwards of 5 gold a fish, and having a stack of 20 selling for 133g with the market deductions (On Emerald Dream), I'd say catching these fish are way worth it.

Of course, it'll take a while, but the results are good. It takes around 30 minutes to get a stack of 20, and a patient fisherman can leave with around 400g worth of Suckerfish, which is a fair profit margin, for just sitting around.

Been fishing for 40 Pygmy Suckerfish. Took me almost 3 hours and i got all this until i had all 40:

40 Pygmy Suckerfish

= 512 (552 with PS) Fish

Droprate seems to be somewhere between 5-10%, though it seems to be a lot lower. Definitely worth it. Personally i need them for Flask of Pure Mojo and Guru's Elixir but at least on my server (Das Syndikat, EU) 1 Oil sells for about 50 gold at the auction house. Rare delicacy i would say.

I noticed this as well fishing at vengence landing compared to fishing at other places. It might just be an anomaly but vengence landing seem to be one of the better spots for catching suckerfish.

Utgaarde keep has been the worst one sofar catching six with over 150 casts. Maybe it's chance or maybe the droprate is somewhat dependant on what sub-zone you are currently in like when you do the quest for artisan fishing.

You do not have to be an Alchemist to catch these. Anyone is able to fish them up.

It is also possible to fish up a reinforced crate with one attached to it. (Don't confuse that with one IN the crate, that isn't possible, just only caught alongside of a crate)

I think a droprate that low can be called "rare" or at least uncommon.

The high demand itself is not a problem at all. The real problem is that fishing these things in numbers you can work with takes hours.

1 Fish = 1-2 Oil

Meaning that you'll need at least 30-40 of these to create a 20 stack of Guru's Elixir. Since those 20 elixirs will be used up rather quickly you'd have to go fishing again and again. Same goes for those flasks i mentioned earlier.

I also stated before that it took me about 3 hours to catch 40 of these. So you can see why i call these rare, right? It just takes too much time to farm enough of these for one's own needs.

So yes, the price is no suprise at all. I would even go as far as to call it a fair price for something you need so much time to farm for.

I might suggest the Emerald Dragonshrine in Dragonblight. I caught 26 bonescale snappers, 12 dragon angelfish, 8 mussleback sculpin and 3 crystalized waters - almost 40 casts. I came away with 6 pygmy suckerfish - thats 15% (if you can catch it with a crystalized water). Of course, small sample, could have been a fluke. But its a nice quiet spot, too - right near where the elite bird spawns for the quest.

I'm sorry but this is not entirely correct - nor is El's Anglin post.

It is correct that pygmies do not have their own schools (you'll never see a "school of pygmy suckerfish").

However...

1) I have caught fish that had pygmy suckers with them on the *coasts* of Howling Fjord. Therefore the assertion that these can only be caught from "inland open waters" is incorrect.

2) I have caught fish *from coastal schools* on the east edge of howling fjord that had pygmy suckers attached. I do not yet know if this is unique to howling fjord or if this is true for schools of fish in other areas. There is a post from someone about catching 4 pygmies in 10 minutes out of *schools* of crystal minnows (or whatever the useless crystalsong fish is called).

3) Having said that - it *does* seem like my pygmy suckerfish chance is much better if I am fishing in general water rather than from a school of any given fish -- but again, it doesn't seem to matter if the water is inland or coastal.

4) I have not yet determined if the drop rate for suckers is any higher from "higher level" Northrend waters than the lower level Northrend waters. Given previous experience with such things, I expect the yield will be higher as the difficulty of fishing the water rises.

Edit 12/12/08 -- as of today I'm not catching *any* sucker fish out of schools of other fish - after three hours of solid school fishing all over Northrend. Open waters even if coastal still applies.

Don't know if this would make a difference or not, but I found that by not fishing from schools my success rate inceased dramatically. I started my NR fishing going after schools of Nettlefish in Scholazar Basin. After about 500 catches I had 15 suckerfish. Poo.

I got the recipe for Snapper Extreme and decided to fish them from the northern edge of Lake Kum'Uya in Borean Tundra. After 120 catches I had 15 suckerfish. Yay. I did not move from the spot the entire time.

In the interest of science I repeated my trial. Same spot, same time, didn't move. After 150 catches I had 19 suckerfish. Yay again.

The next day, same time, same place, 100 catches, 12 suckerfish. Huzzah!

Possible explanations:

1) I'm just lucky. Go me. Maybe this is Blizz's way of compensating me for NEVER getting the dungeon drops I need (feel free to laugh at my pain). On the other hand, I'm pretty sure they have it out for me regardless. Life as a rogue.
2) Standing in one spot helps your chances. Doesn't seem likely, but results don't lie. Except in WoW and politics (take that comment however you want).
3) Increasing your fishing skill increases you chances of catching suckerfish. Seems unlikely as I can fish BT waters with no fishing buffs beyond my fishing Pole (Seth's Graphite with Eternium Line). The drop rate did not increase if I had a Sharpened Fish Hook on the line.
4) Daytime fishing increases your chances. Possible, I haven't tested fishing at night vs. day. I have also not tested at length in saltwater, although as indicated by other posters in this thread they CAN be caught in saltwater. When I get a recipe that's useful to me which utilizes saltwater fish, I may give it a go.

Would love someone else to give this a shot to confirm/deny. Whatever the reason, this is a big moneymaker as many alchemists would rather farm herbs than while away the day fishing. Cheers and happy fishing.

After fishing in Daggercap bay just north/east of Valgarde off a rock for an hour (between 10-11pm server time, if time matters) I managed to rake in 16 of these suckers.

I also got

As well as two crates, one with 4 Borean Leather Scraps and the other with 2 Frostweave Cloth.

Edit: Switched toons to craft something for a guildy and when I came back (same spot) to fish for roughly another hour I hit a horrible dry spell for 30-40min, then I got 3 within 5 casts and a few later on. Logging off broke my decent streak :(

Thank you for this tip. After catching only 3 in an hour around Utgarde Keep, I moved to Vengeance Landing. I tried fishing off the coast near crabs within Vengeance Landing (so it said VL on my minimap) but wasn't having much luck so I moved just outside along the coast so that my mini map changed to Howling Fjord at 78.78, 24.48 and caught 13 in an hour. Definitely worth changing spots for.

The drop rate from these in pools will skyrocket with patch 3.08, apparently to about 50% of catches. Obviously prices will collapse.

Since I am several thousand casts in howling fjord seeking the dark herring i have piles of theses, I'm selling them off as fast as I can and I suggest you do the same.

Catches in unnamed coastal waters are the same as catches from inland water. This is a longstanding Northrend "glitch" that applies to all fishing. Coastal areas that have a specific name contain "coastal" fish.

3.0.8 adds Pygmy Suckerfish to Northrend pools as bonus catches - rarely from Glassfin Minnow School, commonly from other pools.

I just logged in today after the patch went live, went to Grizzly Hills and caught 20 Salmon from pools. From that 20 Salmon I also caught 16 Pygmy Suckerfish.

I don't know if this is a mistake from the patch or if the drop rate has really increased this much. I'm on my way to catch some other fish to see if the same has happened elsewhere.

Yes, since 3.08, the fish-rate for these was silently increased or is bugged. I have been in the Tundra fishing Mussleback Sculpin for about 30 minutes. I have caught 66 Sculpin and 53 Pygmy fishing pools in Lake Kum'uya.

I have the Croc fishing daily sitting in my quest log, so i am not sure if the bug with this quest is affecting rate.

I've found that any school has an amazing drop rate on these now. I was getting close to 75% at one point fishing Cuttlefish/Monsterbelly south of Unupe. More like 50% in other schools in Borean, Grizzly Hills, and Howling Fjord. Even had some attached to crates and crystallized water. Can't say I'm happy, this used to be a big money maker for me, but oh well.

These seem to drop 95% with Glacier Salmon pools. I caught over 100 Salmon and collected close to 90 Pygmies so I don't know what the others are talking about. Just fish the salmon and you will get the pygmies.

Fish the Salmon in Grizzly Hills. Look up Glacier Salmon and you will see all the fishing places.

Confirmed increase in Dargonblight pools also. I fish in the pools at both Lake Indu'le and at the Westwind refugee camp - and I was catching nearly 1 for 1. I caught 27 Angelfish and 20 Pygmy's. I have fished these pools before and have never gotten any Pygmy's at those locations.

These fish are now becoming a pain. They fill up your bags and the AH is flooded with them, so much so that before long it will be cheaper to sell them as vendor trash.
I am not sure what Blizz's idea was behind this but they might as well take the fish out of the game. With the new fish feast recipe everyone is going to be pulling stacks of these out of the water!

As of patch 3.0.8a, the droprate for these is still extremely high. Just fishing in Imperial Manta Ray schools is yielding more Pygmy Suckerfich than Manta Rays.

Confirmed that the salmon schools yeild nearly as much pygmys as salmon.. much easier to fish schools of other fish with a high drop rate than regular water and hope you get the type you want.

If you are a herby with maxxed fishing the droprate increase is just made of win. Turn em to Pygmy oil and then make a Flask of Mighty Mojo or Potion of Speed(I find these sell better and high end guilds sup on these like candy) Else see if any of your friends will buy these off you in bulk to make speed pots :-) not everyone can be bothered with fishing :-P

I found I was catching this nearly 50% of the time along with Nettlefish in the Rainspeaker Rapids near Frenzyheart Hill. After 3 pools I had a full stack of Nettlefish and Pygmy Suckerfish.

A great spot to farm these is the Lake of Indu'le near the bay of Moa'Ki.
There are schools of Dragon Angelfish, nearly every time you loot a fish out of a school, you also get a suckerfish.

If you look next to the name of the person who posts, it tells you what build they posted during.

If you bother to take that into account you would see that they were talking about how rare this fish was before 3.08 when the drop rate was dramatically increased and they were added to school loot tables.

These things drop like friggin' flies now off just about any node in Northrend. I know they drop off of about every Manta Ray you catch out of Imperial Manta nodes. I used to be able to sell a stack for around 95g pre-patch. I went to the AH a few days ago....5g for 20. Thanks Blizz, a cash cow has been sent to slaughter!

This is not always the case.

If you want a spectacular drop rate, fish in Nettlefish Schools in Sholazar Basin. You'll get one just about every time along side a Nettlefish or Barrelhead Goby (amongst other random drops - Reinforced Crate and Crystalized Water for example).

Nettlefish will get you some good money as well in the AH - anywhere from 50g to 99g for a stack of 20. Barrelhead Goby, not so much - anywhere from 5g to 20g for a stack of 20. In either case, it's still a good way to get some extra cash or leveling cooking and/or alchemy.

i did fly to Grizzly hills, and then i started to fish near blue sky logging grounds, i did fish up many bonescale snapper but only 1 pygmy suckerfish, i got tierd, so i tryed to fish in those *Glacial Salmon School* and i did fish up 15 glacial salmon and 11 pygmy suckerfish, so you get more pygmy suckerfish from fishing in Glacial salmon school, or else i just had very much luck :) i hope this will help you when you shall farm pygmy sucherfish

For those with a large excess of these fish that you cannot sell, it's worth it to get them converted into pygmy oil and then sell that to a vendor instead of selling the fish directly.

20-stack of pygmy oil sells for 1.5g;
20-stack of pygmy sucker fish sells for a mere 10s.

All you have to do is toss them to an alchemist alt (or friend) and spend some time converting them. No vials or anything are needed for the process. I will just mail them all to my alt, and occasionally gather them all up, click create all and afk for a while while it goes, then vendor all the oil.

I just did some fishing in schools.

Out of 50 catches. 40 Suckerfish dropped.
That was fishing only in Imperial Manta Ray schools.

Makes sense, seeing as the original "Sucker Fish", called Bluestreak Cleaner Wrass are most commonly found on larger fish including Sharks and Ray's.
"Cleaner Wrass" live off dead skin, and ectoparasites that live on all marine animals. The Cleaner Wrass remains only briefly, cleaning its host in a Mutualist Relationship. Cleaner Wrass is also the fish that Oscar from Shark Tale (2004), played by Will Smith, was based on.

Finishing for 30 minutes in the Decrepit Flow in Crystalsong Forest w/ fishing skill of 575 (so no trash or missed casts), I got:

71 bonescale snapper
42 glassfin minnow
1 crystalized water
13 pygmy suckerfish
2 reinforced crates (which had 2 pieces of frostweave cloth each)

also- if you are going to fish here, walk a bit into the water to avoid "water too shallow"

2 hours of fishing in Borean Tundra from Musselback Sculpin shools in Lake Kum'uya gave me 142 Musselback Sculpin and 107 Pygmy Suckerfish. I also got the odd grey vendor trash as well, sea weed drift wood. I was taking my time, and once in a while another fisherman was there.

Taken from the newest 3.3 Patch Notes Update for the PTR (10/23) :

The all-new Kalu’ak Fishing Derby, a test of fishing skill with a healthy dash of luck, has come to Northrend! Every Wednesday beginning at 8 PM players can try to catch the elusive Blacktip Shark. Elder Clearwater sits in Dalaran for one hour awaiting the return of the quickest, most experienced fisher to bring him this shark. This champion fisher will be rewarded in-kind for returning with the first catch. Those who aren’t able to return with the first catch will still receive just reward for getting the Blacktip Shark to Elder Clearwater before he takes his leave. It is said that these sharks’ favorite meal are the bite-sized Pygmy Suckerfish. Perhaps a hook in their waters will do the trick.

TL;DR Version:
- New Fishing Competition
- the target is the Blacktip Shark
- it is hinted you will find it only / the most in regions where you would also get Pygmy Suckerfish while fishing
- if you don't win ( = be the first to bring him the shark), don't be discouraged, you still get a reward for catching it at all

Notice that all of this is subject to change as this feature is not available on live yet.

Caught 3 in about 2 minutes in a school of Imperial Manta Ray's at Sorlof's Strand on the coast of Howling Fjord.

Edit: That doesn't seem impressive to me anymore since I get them off of nearly every drop from the schools of Imperial Manta Ray's in this area. Out of 20 Imperial Manta Ray's from the schools I got 15 suckerfish.

Schools of fish along the river in Grizzly Hills worked for me.I needed a bunch of those fish to make Pygmy Oil for alchemy leveling and then for Indestructible Alchemist's Stone.I caught more than enough of these fish with no effort,starting from 21 fishing skill.
Those schools of fish give 1 Glacial Salmon and most of the times a Pygmy Suckerfish.

I farm Glassfin minnows out of the Crystalsong forest, and that little strip of water there i get 1 pygmy to every 4 glassfin. So best overall droprate for pygmy suckerfish in all reality is there, one every 4 cast, easy to farm them up if your farming mats for the water walking elixir

Thanks all for the comments on the pygmy suckerfish. Now I know it's not vendor trash. By the way, I just fished in Sholazar Basin in 'The Seabreach Flow' near where the free portal drops you, after trying on the coast where it empties into the Veiled Sea, 40 minutes at each spot.

Fishing skill went from starting at 435 to finishing at 490, using a +20 pole and +75 lures. Toon was level 77. Results:
Barrelhead Goby x190 (101 + 89);
Nettlefish x88 (37 + 51);
Pygmy Suckerfish x38 (24 + 14);
Reinforced Crates x 10 (5 + 5). The crates yielded:
Borean Leather Scraps x19,
Frostweave Cloth x12, and
Cobalt Ore x2.

By the way, the Poached Nettlefish recipe took my cooking skill to 415 before going gray. Then I was able to buy and use the Spicy Blue Nettlefish recipe and cooked the rest of my Nettlefish. Cooking skill is now at 440 and the Spicy Blue Nettlefish recipe is still yellow. Sweet! (Not sure if the greater number of Nettlefish inland and Suckerfish on the coast was a function of geography, skill level, both, or just plain randomness.) ...now if I could just land one of those sharks for the fishing derby...oh well, there's always next week :)

I fished outside of pools for 15 minutes and got 1. I fished in pools for 10 minutes and i got 10.... maybe is was in luck (our out luck, depends how you look at it).. but fishing from pools in HF.. helped for me

I fished last night at Valiance Keep and got 6 x 20 of them. Must be lucky ;-D sold 1 stack for 20g. I spend over 6 hours catching. (got also clams for 4 stacks of dalaran food that is really close to fish feast and around 200 of other fishes there)

Fish in a node - I get them all the time when I fish from nodes. The nodes I have seen them in were in borean tundra (imperial manta ray, borean man o'war), howling fjord (imperial manta ray), scholozar basin (nettlefish) and dragonblight (nettlefish). They were also attached to some nettlefish I found in borean tundra.

Today I went for Glacial Salmon Schools in Grizzly Hills, following the inland river.

After roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes, my results were:
- 144x Glacier Salmons
- 100x Pygmy Suckerfish
- 11x Reinforced Crates
- 8x Crystallized Water

All things considered, not too bad. As a bonus, Glacier Salmons are also used for crafting Firecracker Salmon and Fish Feast.
