Area is packed with the Sea Sprays and Sea Elementals just south of the quest giver. Fairly easy to beat, just watch out for the elite giants in the area. Try to pick up the quest called Zapped Giants and do both at the same time as the mobs are all together.

As a warrior that is spec'd some protection and some arms, I have to say that this was one of the worst quests I've had to face yet, because these water elementals are an absolute horror to deal with. Well that, and I was level 46 picking on tough 48-49 elementals. It's an alright drop, but don't expect to be grabbing a Water Elemental Core off of every mob you kill. In fact, it took me about 3 hours to complete this quest, mainly because there are a lot of mobs pretty densely packed and it's very easy to pull some unwanted friends over to you. Main thing is, alway look around and make sure your surroundings are clear when you are taking on one of these. Oh, and if you're a frost mage, better use some fire spells, cause these bad boys are immune to frost completely.

They're also immune to poisons for you rogues doing this quest.

My advice? Get a Paladin with frost resist aura, all their damage is frost, and it takes out about 1/5 of their hits and you resist a good deal of their spells.

Also the reputation is higher, I got 385 with all Steamwheedle Cartel.

Drop rate is awful. I tear through these things like paper on my shaman and it's taken me about an hour to get only 6 cores, nonstop killing. Their attacks ignore armor by the way, which is also annoying. Frost resistance aura/totems are good.

this quest is obnoxious. It's VERY hard to do sub level 48 as a warrior, and the drop rate is awful. I went through 2 stacks of food, eating every other elemental before i finished.

Its really not that bad as a lock. I did this at level 46, along with the quest where you shrink giants. Hell, I was even able to take down stupid ganking warriors just after killing an elemental or two. Just VW and you'll be fine.

This quest takes forever. This site says that Sea Elementals and Sprays drop the Water Elemental Core at about a 50% rate. This is not correct, not by a longshot. It took me an hour and a half to get ten Cores... Drop rate was, at the most, 12.5% (one in every eight). A very long, very drawn out quest that will have you running up and down the coast trying to get the Core.

Drop rate was not spectacular, but it seemed alright to me.. I remember doing this on my priest a while ago and taking ages. Maybe the drop rate has been upped?

Mages: Use your frost ward, even the ones that don't cast frostbolt use frost damage with their fists. And use fire.. this quest is pain for frost mages -.-

I just finished this quest on a 47 pally with little to no trouble in less than an hour. Drop rate was about 50% on the Sea Sprays and about 75% on the Sea Elementals. Just pop on your frost resist aura, judge and seal light, and swing till they die. The sea sprays have a knock back, so keep a finger on your cleanse so they don't get free hits on ya.

Do it with https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=7003 as they're in the same area.

Also, leads to https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=7726 , which is the same thing again, so hopefully you won't hate it as much as these people. =)

Not too bad if you can heal, if they dont drop the elemental core then they tend to drop enchanted water, which you can use to healyourself, Often 4-5 at a time

Really not worth it unless you're already coming here to grind for Globes of Water. Just do the giants quest and only bother with the elementals if you don't mind grinding them a little or if they attack you.

I've been killing them for 30 minutes and not a single drop off the water elementals. I've been thinking I didn't have the quest or was supposed to do something, but it is, in fact, a horrible quest. 3/4 of my kills in this time have been water elementals, 1/4 giants, and I'm 7/15 on giants with 0/10 on water elementals. Oh wait, while I was writing this a giant attacked me and I got another giant residue. -_-

First, as a lvl 47 Frost Mage, doing both Zapped Giants and Fuel for Zapping together, this one started off very tough. All three creatures you're trying to kill (Sea Sprays, Sea Elementals and the Giants) are Frost resistant. Finally created a menu bar consisting of Arcane and Fire spells - things got MUCH easier.

Drop rate was not fantastic. I worked my way down the coast and back up again, killing everything I encountered. I got 15 zapped Giants just about the same time as I got my 10th core drop. Never had to venture into the Cove or go swimming in the water (did get my feet wet though).

As a time saver, you can work this quest with part 2 of The Missing Courier quest series ( starts with https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=4124 ) as the rowboat you're looking for is just under the water, and barely offshore at 45,64.

As a 46 Lock, I didn't mind the quest at all. Yes the drop isn't the best, but there is worse. I was pulling in 290-320 exp per kill unrested. Worth it for me.

Easy as a level 50 full frost mage. Dampen Magic youself, toss up Ice Barrier. Pull with Fireball, spam down with Scorch. My Ice Barrier usually broke as the second mob died. Repeat.

This quest took me about 30 minutes, drop rate around 12,5% - 15%.
This time I was playing a level 46 Beat Mastery hunter with a cat pet, hardly had any down time to eat/drink, just mend pet, bandage your pet and yourself up, and you can grind non-stop.

Soloed this quest easy at lvl 48 Rogue. good drop rate too.. went just north of the questgiver, and got 10 cores out of 14 elementals.

Not really hard at all, just takes a while with the droprate. MobInfo listed it at 16.7% for me. But as I said, grinding these and the giants wasn't at all difficult as a 46 full fire mage. Frost ward and I barely had to rest, except drinking every few pulls. Giants were incredibly easy, even the 49's. Pulled with a pyro, fireballed a couple times and i could get them to almost half health before they reached me if i got lucky. Then I'd mini them and kill easily. Good xp for what it was worth.

This quest is horrid if you are a frost mage. They are immune to frost damage. Use Frost Ward so you aren't dying horribly, use low mana cost Fire spells because you will inevitably have to sit down and drink/eat after 2 kills. Drop rate on this quest is about 1 in 10 kills. It took me (lvl 46 Frost Mage) almost 2 full hours to complete it. I did get 5 bubs of XP for just the kills, though. Not sure if that's quite worth the frustratingly low drop rate....I will not be doing the repeatable part either, screw that.

As a level 48 druid I found this quest very easy. Killed about 30 to get all cores, while popping a heal after every 8-12 kills. Unrested I was getting fairly low exp, but it was quick and only took 15 minutes.

The giants nearby are also useful as they are easily grinded in 5 minutes.

at first my drop rate was about 1 in every 10.

i noticed that i got almost a 100% drop rate from the Sea elementals in the long cove. 48, 52. i never got a drop from the sea sprays. also dont bother with takeing refueling for zappers, it doesnt give any XP after completeion ony 21 silver.

Theres 49 and 48 elite giants all the way down the coast line - so watch out for them.

Also there is noway the drop rate is 50%. I had to go up and down the coastline clearing everything twice before i got 10.

For the Protection Paladins out there:

I've tried to complete this quest at level 47, but as mentioned before on other comments, the drop rate is pretty low, like 20% I would say.

But the biggest problem is that these elementals only attack with frost, so you won't be absorbing any damage, your redoubt will have no use, either Holy Shield, so it's like fighting when you were a Lv10 Paladin, also your Frost Resistance Aura (Rank 2) will only absorb some of the attack, and it will not absorb completely, you'll still take 98-120 dmg with each attack. It takes a lot of time just to kill one mob, so I gave up on this one, I'd rather kill 284612 boars to level up instead.

Aside from the horrible drop rate, the quest is quite easy. My 45/46 Hunter had no problems, although my pet had difficulty holding the aggro of the 49 Sea Elementals. But since the mobs are spaced so far apart, it's not really an issue.

Never been so frustrated with a quest.

Even as a 49 Prot. Paladin this quest was a beating. The frost ones are still a pain in the ass even with the frost aura on. They kick you back about 30 feet and slow your movement by 50% so it takes forever to keep dealing damage.

Horrible quest for any up-close meleer.

For balance druids ur best bet is to stick to the sea elementals,if u aggro them usin ur entageling roots add faerie fire then insect swarm + moonfire followed by starfire/wrath spam they go down quickly and never hit u + considerin the drop rate of enchanted water from them this is quite a good combo to use

Drop rate has been improved a LOT since I first did this quest, they now seem to drop around every 3-5 kills.
Still a fairly long grind but not unreasonable.
They drop some stuff that is usefull or at least worth a bit on AH, like globe of water, elemental water and even aquamarine, I also got a couple of stacks of enchanted water, which is pretty handy.
A good quest to do. Also good to do the giant quest from the same guy at the same time, although the giants seem to be more common underwater while the elementals stick more to the shoreline.

Drop rate on this quest, STILL sux! I have done this quest on about 15 different characters and each time the drop rate is horrid. Might wanna skip this quest, or just keep grinding as it provides ok XP. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Leads to Refuel for the Zapping which is a repeatable version of the quest but only requires 6 cores rather than the 10 that are needed for this one.

Also note that this quest counts towards Loremaster of Kalimdor however the repeatable one does not.

Go north of the quest giver to around 44,39 you will see the elementals start to appear there, follow the beach, these give the drop 10 times faster than the ones to the south and east. Got mine in 12 kills

maybe blizzard has changed the drop rate since all these posts, but i found that it was just the same as any other quest. you kill acouple- get one.

stop whining, it gets you xp anyways. and it certainly doesn't take days to do. i now have 9/10 and i've been doing it for about 15 minutes now. I recommend doing the 'Zapped Giants' quest while doing this one obviously, bc you'll get both done at once.

Just go up and down the coastline killing one by one and turn back around for respawns if you still need some.

There seems to be WoW players that dread,
To do a drop quest. They'd rather be dead.
Drop rate's one in three,
Should solo; that's the key.
They'd prefer complaining on Thott instead!

There are tons of Sea Sprays and Sea Elementals that have a one in three chance of dropping; which means by law of averages you will need to kill 30 of them to get your quest done. If you are grouped with 2 other people, you will have to kill 90 of them! Simple math. That's why Blizz put so many of them both north and south of the dock where the original quest giver is. So use your first aid, drink your free mana from the drops and start grinding! Vote for my limerick poem plz. :)

Like everyone else says, just a hideous, hideous drop rate. Grab a pot of coffee and a good book cause you'll be here a while. This must be one of the longest, dullest grinds in the game. I had no luck at all on the shoreline, spent over an hour going all the way to the south end of the beach and back without a single drop! Decided to try the little inlet channel that runs east and north from the shore and got all 10 drops there. They came in bunches - the first two kills dropped cores, then another hour (about 25-30 kills) went by before I got any more. 3 of the next four kills dropped cores, then another 45 minutes of no drops, followed by 4 of the next 7 dropping cores. The last one took another half hour. About half the mobs drop nothing, not even cheap junk. I wouldn't mind grinding 3-1/2 hours when they're dropping 3 or 4 silver a pop, but this is just pointless. And as if that's not enough to make you quit the game for a week, then you turn it in and the quest giver asks you to do it again! Blizzard folk have a sick sense of humor sometimes. No thanks Blizz, I'll pass on the refuel quest if you don't mind.

DO NOT SKIP THIS QUEST! as a vet player do all the drop quests you can. but get this.. DO THEM WITH RESTED STATUS! at lvl 50 i was geting 500xp a kill. you should always do these kind of quests Bizz put the in here for a reason that force you to grind. if you skip all the drop quests you would lvl at a good pace and you will end up grinding out the rest of your lvl anyways. my advice to you is as follows. Rest up a bit Toss in your fav toons in your media player and have at it the quest will be done and no time you will get alot of grinding xp

Call me crazy, but I think I found a method to get the cores to drop:

I was killing all the elementals and got three in a row, then nothing for 20 kills.

So I thought, "What if I alternate Sea Sprays and Sea Elementals?"

Sure enough, EVERY single kill by this alternating method resulted in a drop. All 7 in a row.

I think that's statistically impossible to happen by pure chance.

Another vote here for going north of the questgiver. I killed 8 or 9 elementals south of the questgiver without a drop, and began to worry I was doing something wrong. After checking here, I went north and got a drop every 2-4 kills.

I didn't really pay attention to whether or not it was a sea spray or an elemental, I just sent in my void and went to work. I had a drop with about every other kill.....I dunno...

Well Alternating Sea Sprays with Sea elementals did the job for me practically 100% drop rate. Devious bastards at Blizzards though ;)

I have 5 characters, and done this quest 3 times now hoping the drop rate would be better (come on blizz, pull the thumb out ur ass!) but sad to say it is the same, killed over 100 elemental's for 7 core's this time (u might be lucky and get them quick, but if after 10-15 kills u only have 1 core, drop this quest and move on! unless u love farming, boring, boring, boring.)

My oh my, i just did this again on my fury warrior and i'd forgotten how bad the drop rate was. I wasn't even sure i'd picked the quest up properly until i checked and rechecked my quest log.

You aren't imagining it and it isn't just you, the drop rates on these quest items are cringeworthy. I ate 40 times doing this quest, eating roughly every 2-3 mob kills. If you value your sanity, skip this quest.

I have to agree that alternating seems to be the way to go. I found two of those cores while killing about 30 elementals as a level 46-47 warrior, then I read about the alternating thing, and doing that I got four cores from five kills so far …

I'd also advise on picking up everyhing the elementals drop, even stuff like elemental water and enchanted water that are not use to many classes. It might just halp :)

Ok I definetly agree its a bad drop rate but I read about alteranting and well it worked nothing more then that. Also pick up everything and anything! I got over 1g in vendor stuff between the elemental water and Enchanted water alone (I used globes of water for tailoring) So its defiently a time consuming quest btu in my opinion more the worth it.

Info on Quest: Ok...this quest was a &*!@# for me. Not because I'm a mage...but because of my spec. I'm a frost mage...and they are Immune to Frost Damage. Just had to use some weak Fire spells for a while to get the job done.

This quest is for Elementals. Quest "Fuel for the Zapping". You need to get the elemental cores.

I had just arrived in Feralas as a level 44 N.E. Hunter and was intent on doing some serious grinding/questing to get a few levels.

I bumped into these quests as I was making my way to Rage Scar Hold for the Yeti Hide quest, and I have to say, despite all the complaints and problems that other people seem to be having, it suited me perfectly.

Just running up and down along the beach killing the Elementals and Giants got me to level 47 (admittedly with a nearly full Rested State) in less than a day's casual play. Yes, the Elemental drops were terrible, but if you're looking to grind it's not a problem. Plus the Elemental Water and the Pearls I got from the clams the Giants dropped sold for serious Gold on the AH.

Just one thing, though: if even ONE other person is attempting these quests at the same time, THEN things can get very difficult, especially if they're unwilling to give you any room whatsoever (though it was fun watching a level 36 Human Warlock die repeatedly). Overall, though, a little patience and the right mind-set can make this a very profitable and enjoyable jaunt. Just an opinion.

The drop rate I found varied depending on how far you were from the dock. By the boat quest it was very high (45,65) but really low at dock. The giants are also far more plentiful farther down the coast and I only realized this after I had wasted about 30 mins getting very little by the dock.

Solo'ed as a lvl 49 Human Warrior. Good XP and did all 3 quests in one as noted above.

For me the drop rate absolutely sucked no matter which side of the quest giver I went to. I had to make at least two passes of both sides to pick up all the cores I needed, dropped maybe 1 every four I killed. I'm frustrated after an hour and a half of killing elementals, I don't think the next quest in this line is worth it. Decent XP when I turned it in though.

Okay, here goes.

This is a worthwhile quest IF you take the concurrent quest "Zapped Giants". I just did Zapped Giants concurrently with the follow-up quest to this one, "More Fuel for the Zapping". I think there's also a follow-up to Zapped Giants, probably "More Zapped Giants". I had NO problems as a lvl 46 druid, although I'd still like more drops from the elementals. :(

DO THESE QUESTS TOGETHER, that's all I can tell ya.

That's right, I lost 4 copper in completing the quest, strictly in monetary value. Lost 8 important potions (instead of 2). Got a hat that does nothing more than increase armor by 7. Waste of 1.5 hours (and an additional half hour posting this).

Go back and do this one when it's a walk-thru, like lvl 48-50. Then it _might_ be worth it.

Just noticed that if you intiate combat by zapping the giants, they drop fairly junky, just silver and the dust. If you start the fight without zapping them (as a 'lock, I was sending my VW in first) then zapping them after he's pulled aggro, they always drop silver, mageweave, and a big-mouth clam (plus the dust). I've kept abandoning the quest because I believe there's a bug in the system. If you pull them first without the zapper, then they drop like they were still elite. Tons of greens so far! Either I'm really lucky (5 greens before I got the 15 dust) or there's something not right here...

Solo'd as a 46 NE Warrior, but it was extremely tough due to the low drop rate and how the damn elementals and sea sprays seemed to block every hit. Just like with the giant quest, at my level I needed to bandage myself up after every kill.

Drop rate is in the range of 10 to 50 percent. I say this because I once killed 8 straight and got NOTHING, then logged out and back in. That brought the drop rate up to about one out of every two.

I had just arrived in Feralas as a level 44 N.E. Hunter and was intent on doing some serious grinding/questing to get a few levels.

I bumped into these quests as I was making my way to Rage Scar Hold for the Yeti Hide quest, and I have to say, despite all the complaints and problems that other people seem to be having, it suited me perfectly.

Just running up and down along the beach killing the Elementals and Giants got me to level 47 (admittedly with a nearly full Rested State) in less than a day's casual play. Yes, the Elemental drops were terrible, but if you're looking to grind it's not a problem. Plus the Elemental Water and the Pearls I got from the clams the Giants dropped sold for serious Gold on the AH.

Just one thing, though: if even ONE other person is attempting these quests at the same time, THEN things can get very difficult, especially if they're unwilling to give you any room whatsoever. Overall, though, a little patience and the right mind-set can make this a very profitable and enjoyable jaunt. Just an opinion.

Killed the Sea Elements level 48 around 46.64 everyone droped the Water Element Core

Solo'd as a 46 NE Druid. The drop rates weren't too bad for me, dropped about 1 for every 3 kills, and picked up a nice stack of elemental water too.

I just ran up and down looking for the 47-48 ones, I only died once when a 49 add came in at the last moment. I didn't worry too much about the giant elementals, I steered reasonably clear of them, but they didn't aggro me at all.

Fast, fun quest. Did it in about 25 minutes.

These are located north and south of the dock at around 43,43. I tried to stick to just the elementals because the sea spray, although lower level, shoot you with ice and that kinda sucks.

Drop rate wasn't so great, but seemed to get better in the end. The first day I started it, I didn't get anything from some kills. When I came back to it the next day, it was much better. Pair with the giant zapping quest for efficiency.

Core drops off the water elementals -- South I got none, even after I had killed about 20-30 water elementals/sea sprays. NONE.

Then, north of the questgiver I got a core to drop nearly every kill.

I agree with everyone else. The drop rate is pathetic. After two hours and 7 cores (the last 10-15 guys I killed didn't drop a thing), I dropped the quest. It wasn't worth the frustration.

I've killed the entire shoreline and I've gotten 5. This quest makes me want to break things. Still need 5 for one char and another 10 for my other.

Good luck grouping for this quest... pfft.

sucks . . . BUT I found out the lvl 49/48 sea elementals drop them quicker, its 1 out of 3 or 1 out of 4 . . . The sea sprays NEVER dropped for me.

Quest giver is on pier 4 the boat that goes to feather moon (its on your map or follow the road where it branches off to the sea in Feralas.

Just go south of him and on the coast you'll find more elementals / sprays than blondes on sunset blvd in hollywood.

Do this with the giant quest .. . the elementals and giants hangout together saying whass up, watching the game n having a bud.

So I stuck to hitting lvl 49's . . . was using a druid at 47 (dinged 48) and while not feral spec'd she could hold her own on the 49s (i had to pop out and heal)

Just target the sea elementals, they drop better , plus they also drop a water drink for 1300 mana .. . which is pretty cool for mana users.

Don't bother w/ follow up, since you only get silver, and REP, no EXP

The drop rate on the cores is so horrible that the game thinks you're not doing the quest and stops tracking your progress.

At first I thought this wouldn't be so bad. The first four elementals I killed each dropped a core.

Then it took me another 38 Elementals to get the remaining 6.

A friendly advice to all of you: Decline this quest and forget about it's existence.
If you dare to accept it, prepare to spend the rest of your lives grinding Water Elementals looking for Water Element Cores.

If you're thinking of skipping this because of the droprate, don't - it's still worth doing, just get your mindset ready that it'll take longer than you think. It's not that painful. Also make sure you are at least a couple of levels ahead - level 49 or 50 (higher for warriors), so you can despatch them relatively quickly.

You should also be doing Zapped Giants at the same time, and if you can, the final part of Testing The Vessel.

This quest absolutely stinks if you're not a mana user.
47 warr, so far gained HALF A LEVEL only killing the Sea sprays (because the elementals are just too tough)! Yes, I need about 120k XP to ding, which means 60k XP and about 550 XP per mob (all rested XP) I have killed more than 100 of them - and I'm STILL only at 7/10 cores...!

Blizz, you can take those cores and shove them up where the sun doesn't shine! $%^& you and your lame low-drop quests! >:(

One more thing...they are immune to frost spells. As a Frost Mage, that's pretty significant. Use your Flamestrike and Frost Ward because they use Frost themselves.

This quest is already bad if you're at the appropriate level, worse if you're a melee, and undoable if you're a mage. Do NOT waste your time on this quest as a mage, they're completely immune to frost spells and are resistant to fire spells as an unreasonably large amount of my fireballs had half their damage resisted.

Note that completing this quest along with Zapped Giants unlocks this NPC as a vendor, which can be much more convenient than making the trip across to Feathermoon Isle.
Also, after completion, the quest becomes repeatable for XP and Steamwheedle Cartel rep.
