Blizzard has unveiled
The World of Warcraft Pop-Up Book
, a charming little exploration of the Horde and Alliance capital cities of Azeroth, from Stormwind to Zuldazar. This little piece of Azeroth is a work of art created by the prolific illustrator Matthew Reinhardt, who has made dozens of pop-up books for Lego, Marvel, Disney, DC, and several other companies.
This Collector's Edition book comes in a handsome case, complete with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Paper Engineer Matthew Reinhardt and Blizzard Senior Art Director Samwise Didier, a Horde and an Alliance faction pin, and a large map of Azeroth desk mat updated to include all of the lands present in
Battle for Azeroth
.
While not exact replicas of the cities found in game, these stylized versions offer a glimpse at the unique cultural design of each city, with several highlighted and interactable details, as well as small bits of lore. Stormwind features the grand cathedral, the keep, King Varian's memorial from the park district, and the Valley of Heroes - the statue lined pathway leading into the city proper which celebrates the heroes of the Second War (Warcraft II), several of whom have become prominent characters within recent story arcs.
Teldrassil can be seen both before and after its burning during the War of Thorns leading up to
Battle for Azeroth
. The devastating fire, revealed by a pull tab, is the result of Sylvanas' decisive invasion of Darkshore while the rest of the Alliance forces were occupied in Silithus. This began a series of events leading to open war between the Horde and Alliance, starting with the Siege of Lordaeron which destroyed the town of Brill and left the Undercity uninhabitable by plague. It sparked a similar fire in members of the Horde, starting with dissent and leading to outright rebellion, as they found their sense of honor jeopardized by the conduct of the war.
Boralus and Ironforge are featured together, showcasing the ancient artifacts contained in the Hall of Explorers, and Proudmoore Keep, the seat of power in Kul Tiras. Alliance players in
Battle for Azeroth
find themselves visiting Jaina Proudmoore's island nation of Kul Tiras in the midst of a power struggle between its three great houses.
For the Horde, the great ziggurat of Zuldazar at the heart of the Zandalari Empire can be seen with all its waters flowing and excerpts relating to their Loa gods. Although the Zanadalari's empire had stood for several thousand years old, they had suffered during the Cataclysm and the machinations of the Prophet Zul, returned after a failed campaign to revitalize the Mogu empire.
The gates of Orgrimmar are prominently displayed, with Horde banners lining the walls and spikes adorning everything in typical Orc fashion. This is where the fateful showdown between High Overlord Varok Saurfang and Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner came to a fateful conclusion. Saurfang, a tired old veteran of countless warfare sought to restore the honor of the Horde and heroically laid down his own life in order to reveal Sylvanas as a self serving warmonger.
The Undercity aka the Ruins of Lordaeron, one time jewel of the Eastern Kingdoms and home of Arthas, the golden prince who would become the dreaded Lich King, returning to his homeland to murder his father and damn his people to the curse of undeath. Following the burning of Teldrassil, the Alliance war machine rolled over Tirisfal, demolishing Brill and destroying the walls of their once fair city, only to have a hard fought victory snatched away as Sylvanas's last act of defiance blighted the landscape
While it's difficult to convey all the bits and bobs of a pop-up book through two dimensional images alone, it's a cute little visual guide to the cities we know, love, and sometimes try to destroy in the World of Warcraft. Like most pop-up books, it's not particularly large, not nearly as weighty as the
250-page Cinematic Art Book
we took at a look at last week, but there are enough little interactable details to make a nice addition to any collectors library.
Disclosure: This book was sent to us by Blizzard as part of a paid editorial, although the review is our own.
