This is an actual challenging fight for your tank and healer. Here's how we did it (after 5 wipes...):

HEROIC Phase 1:

Early in the fight, the boss spawns a Phoenix (Fire Bird thingie)
This Phoenix will go towards its highest threat target and leave a fire trail behind him. Have a ranged dps kiting it around. Make sure you don't have your party walking trough the fire patches he leaves on the ground. When your ranged dps kills the Phoenix, it will transform into an egg that will regen fast! Don't DPS the egg, there's no point in it, as you can't outdamage it. Just focus on the boss untill it spawns back, then have the ranged dps repeat the kiting.

HEROIC Phase 2:

At 50%, you'll go into Phase 2. You will have to kill the shadow phoenix and kite it around. I'm not 100% sure, but if the soul harvests reach the phoenix, they'll heal it.
I'm not 100% sure, but it's a requirement for the achievment, kite the souls trough the fires on the ground.
When you kill the Dark Phoenix, you go back to Phase1. You should have enough DPS to never repeat phase 2 again.

A very easy way to do this fight is to begin tanking him in the rounded off corner to the right of the stage he stands on. When the phoenix spawns, kill it there. When it turns into the egg, kite the boss to a new (farther) location.

The phoenix is rather slow; you can have melee stay on the boss and have ranged kill the bird as it slowly makes it's way to the tank. Most of the time the phoenix will go down and become an egg again before reaching the melee group (depending on how fare you reposition). At this point the ranged should swap back onto the boss until the egg hatches.

After that, it is a matter of ping ponging back and forth from A to B until you reach phase 2.

3 phase fight, in which phase 1 and 3 are identical.

Phase 1/3 is tank&spank. He gives himself a damage buff and he will put down an stationary aoe on a player now and then.

Phase 2: At 50% he will become immune to damage, pull everyone towards himself and create a large constant AoE around himself. A Dark Phoenix will then spawn somewhere close to him. The Phoenix has a constant shadow-damage AoE that is unavoidable and puts alot of pressure on the healer. Pretty often a soul fragment will spawn at one of the players. This soul fragment will slowly walk towards the Phoenix and will be absorbed by the Phoenix if close enough. I assume this debuffs the player and buffs the Phoenix somehow, but i dont know the details. Once the Phoenix is dead, Barim becomes vulnerable again and he will go back to Phase 1/3.

Phase 1: Barim will periodically cast a beam of light on a random player that must be avoided once cast. Move out of the light beam and continue killing him. The beam of light also deals damage over time and needs to be healed through constantly when it is cast. Once he has reached aprx 50% health he will cast a spell pulling all players within his proximity and placing you in a spirit realm -- phase 2 will begin.

Phase 2: Barim will push all players away from him and phase 2 will begin with players inside a spirit realm dealing with a stream of Soul Fragments, and a Harbringer. The Harbringer must be tanked and kited away from the Soul Fragments as they spawn from random players. The fragments themselves are trying to reach the Harbringer and this must not be allowed or they will heal it for 41k and increase the Harbringers output by 20% each application. Soul Fragments spawn every 10-15secs.

Phase 3: Once the Harbringer has been brought down phase 3 will begin, which is a rinse repeat of phase 1. Players will no longer be in the spirit realm. Stay out of the beam of light on the floor that Barim will cast.

At 50% he draws players in and casts Repentance. Once it clears, move immediately away (including tank) as he does a Hallowed Ground which does some serious AoE damage around him. Meanwhile, a phoenix add will spawn that needs to be killed before phase two can end. Some other adds spawn as well, but they aren't much trouble. Just focus the main add down and he will return to phase one.

We just gave this an attempt or two on Heroic Mode.
Since there are no comments regarding him I'll just throw in what we encountered.

* The boss spawns a Phoenix (580k hp) like Kael'Thas in Magister's Terrace. This moves slowly. Ranged dps nuke. When it's dead it'll transform into an egg and start healing again. After enough time the Phoenix will be back and fly slowly towards a player.

* The boss will throw a disease called Plague of the Ages on one. Ticks for about 5300. Seemed to jump to a nearby ally when removed, so spread out.

* The boss will also cast "Heaven's Fury" at a random player. This is a pillar of light which you need to move away from. Standing in it causes 20k damage per tick.

* The boss will pull everyone towards him and cast a special form of Repentance - you get stunned for a few seconds and then you'll be in the spirit world. The Phoenix was there, waiting for us. It had much more hp this time. About twice.

* While in the spirit world you'll take continous damage, about 5k per tick if I recall correctly. I think the pillar of light, Heaven's Fury, is there as well. I remember some round aoe patch which hurt anyway.

Boss does a few things in heroic mode that you should know about:

Phase 1:
- Spawns a phoenix, dps it down forget about the egg, don't stand in it's fire.
-Spawns light beams, don't stand in them
- at 50% he'll drop a light circle and suck everyone into a shadow phase starting phase 2.

Phase 2:
-Dark phoenix spawns with 1.2M HP, this is your target for this phase, dps it down
- He'll spawn soul fragments, they're copies of a random player in your party, dps them down they have 80k hp.

Pretty easy fight in heroic.

Phase 1-
This is effectively a tank and spank, save for pillars of fire. As always, stay out of the fire. at 50%, Barim will pull everyone in, do minor AOE damage, then go immune, starting phase 2.

Phase 1 heroic- A fire add comes out, like a phoenix. It needs to be kited by a ranged, which shouldn't be too hard since it doesn't move very fast. As long as the ranged has aggro on the add, he can keep dpsing the boss down instead. I call it a phoenix because if it dies, it turns to an egg, heals to full, then goes back to chasing whoever has aggro on it.

Phase 2 -
Harbinger of Darkness - Phase 2 ends when the Harbinger dies. He will spawn Soul Fragments throughout this phase on random targets (including tank and healer). These soul fragments will walk toward the Harbinger, and need to be killed before reaching the Harbinger. This works similarly to Bronjahm in Forge of Souls - the mini-boss will be healed if the fragments reach it. Be sure to move the boss quickly if a soul fragment gets summoned on a melee dps or tank.
Phase 2 heroic - In heroic there's more AOE damage, and more soul fragments. What we did that worked was we had one of the dps on the boss full time (melee if you have 1) and had 2 dps taking out the soul fragments whenever they spawned. We used heroism during this phase.

After the Harbinger dies, you go back to phase 1 again, which is the same as before, except your healer might not have any mana left.

HEROIC

Phase 1:
Have a ranged DPS kite the orange phoenix with slowing in circles around your group. It moves pretty slow on it's own, so this isn't a big threat. It will drop pools of fire that you can't stand in.

Tank facing away from the group, as always.

Phase 2:
At 50% health, the boss puts everyone into the Spirit Realm, becoming immune to all damage and summoning a black phoenix which must be kited by the tank and killed as quickly as possible. I'd pop Heroism here.

Once the black phoenix is dead, he pulls you back into the real world and pulls everyone in front of him. Disperse immediately away from that location to get away from the tank.

DPS him down like in phase 1.

Heroic:

Spawns a bird during the outside phase that's drops fire. It's pretty slow you can kite it. If you kill it it'll stay dead for a few seconds and turn into an egg and respawn.

Otherwise about the same with a lot of raid damage going out. Not much burst on the tank.

Heroic

Phase 1:

He will call a phoenix a few seconds after you engage him. This phoenix leaves spots of fire in its wake and must either be burst dps'ed quickly or kited. It is very slow and easily kited by any class with ranged abilities. If you decide to burst it, it will transform into an egg at 0% health, from which the phoenix will be reborn 30 seconds later.
He will also cast "Heavenly fury" (looks like sun rays), get out of them.
He also uses the ability Fifty lashings, which increases the bosses damage by 5000 for the next 10 attacks.

Phase 2: 50%

He will become immune to damage, pull everyone to him, and then bump everyone away. He will make a zone around him, "Hallowed ground" anyone in there gets one-shotted (I think, or a tleast gets a lot og dmg).
He will call a new phoenix which the tank must aggro. The phoenix will target a person and that person will make a soul fragment which will start moving towards the phoenix. If it reaches the phoenix the party takes 70k dmg! So healers and casters stay at ranged distance from the phoenix, and melee run away when targeted. Dps priority should be on the soul fragments.
When the phoenix dies, the boss returns to phase 1 until he dies.

TL;DR:
P1:
stay out of rays
dps or kite phoenix
heal and tank: be ready for heavy dmg during "Fifty lashes"

P2: 50%
everyone: stay out of zone around barim!
tank: taunt violet phoenix immediately
heal and ranged dps: stay far away from phoenix
melee: run away when targeted by phoenix (violet ray+ violet arrow on your head)
all dps: Focus soul fragment!

Difficult fight on Heroic. 2 Phases, Real and Shadow. Phoenix & Dark Phoenix adds.
First Phase:
Real world
Beams of light - Cast on party member, must move out of effect.
Phoenix - Cast fire spells, follows aggro tables, if killed it turns into an egg, and revives after it heals itself. (Not necessary to kill)

Second Phase:
Shadow World
Dark Phoenix: Must be tanked
Spirit Shards: Burn

Third Phase: ?

(We wiped there, and the group died. Felt something needed to be written)

Fairly easy fight on Heroic if you're paying attention.

First phase, avoid the sunfire beams, stay out of the fire, remove the disease on party members, and either kite or burn down the phoenix that spawns (it has roughly 580k health, my group just burned it since it also took damage from itself) this phoenix does revert to an egg, so it will come back.

Second phase involves burning down the dark phoenix very quickly, while making sure the soul adds that do spawn get killed before they reach the dark phoenix. If you have Heroism / Time Warp / Bloodlust, this would be the phase to use it. AoE damage on the group becomes very hard to heal.

Third phase is like the first, avoid sunfire beams, remove diseases, kite or kill the phoenix.

This boss is a very enjoyable encounter - different than most in the current expansion.

Heroic How To:
This is a "three phase" fight in which phases 1 and 3 are the same. In phase 1, he will be tanked like normal and will spawn a phoenix add. This add moves very slowly and kills itself over time. Simply have a ranged DPS kite it until it dies. It becomes an egg, heals up and repeats.

When the boss hits 50% health, he will draw everyone in and force you to bow to him. He then separate your soul from your body (weird graphic effect on your screen...like purple and drunk). He then spawns a dark phoenix that your group must kill (this one is tanked like normal). Random group members will spawn soul fragments that move toward the phoenix (untanked). If they reach it, it heals. DPS them down when they spawn. When the dark phoenix dies, phase 1 starts all over again.

Alright, since no one else has posted, here's a quick and dirty guide of how to take this guy down in NORMAL:

Phase 1: Start by tanking him on the top of the stairs. Avoid gigantic light pillars, as they hit hard. There will be some damage spread around, but mostly tank n' spank at this point. Clear diseases if you can.

Phase 2: At around 50% he sucks everyone in and sucks their soul. A bird appears. All DPS need to blow cool downs and burn down the bird. Tank needs to taunt and take on the bird. Healer needs to be mindful that everyone will be taking periodic damage. Most importantly, soul shards occasionally appear from players. AVOID them and AVOID letting the bird come into contact with them. They really hurt players and they greatly buff the bird's damage. The goal is to burn the bird and get to phase 3.

Phase 3: Another tank n' spank. Unsure if there is an agro reset. Avoid the light pillars. Clear diseases. Don't be stupid.

The hardest part of this fight is phase 2. If the DPS isn't up toe par and the group's positioning is poor then the healer will OOM and it'll spell wipe.

Normal Mode:

Fight consists of two phases: the normal as you see him, and then the "spirit" phase.

In the normal phase: You need to dodge the solar beam thing and dispel the disease debuff he randomly applies. At around 50% he will pull everyone to him and become immune to damage and you'll be unable to move. At this point the 2nd phase begins.

In the spirit phase: The boss is still immune to damage until you kill the shadowy phoenix. He summons a shadowy phoenix that will spawn shadow replicas of each party member. If the shadow replicas reach the shadow phoenix, the phoenix's damage will be increased. I believe it's 20% damage increase per shadowy replica "absorbed". Tank should kite away the phoenix and the dps should burn the replicas. After the phoenix is down, the fight goes back to the normal phase.

I beat this boss many times. From my tanking view, there is 3 phases (phase 1 and 3 are identical):

1. Tank him regularly, out from his radiance beam. He'll cast many times his radiance beam, you will have to move him. Dps should avoid this beam too.
2. He'll shield himself, cast a Phoenix and and party Clone. Tank them, and dps should focus on bringing the Phoenix down. Tank the phoenix out from the boss shield.
3. Same then phase 1, bring the boss down.

Normal:
Tank and spank till 50 percent, stay out of sunfire. At 50 percent he seperates your soul from your body. He doesnt need to be tanked here, there will be a phoenix type add, kill it fast. If you get a debuff (arrow over your head) stay away from the bird, you'll be spawning a shadow clone that will walk toward it. Kill the clone as it will do raid damage if it reaches the bird. It can be cast on the tank as well. After the bird is dead the fight is back to normal. Lot of raid damage going out throughout the fight.

Heroic:
1st phase is harder because a few seconds in a phoenix will spawn for this phase too. Ideal way to deal with this is have a ranged DPS kite it, as it puts up a debuff that does fire damage to all around it, so tanking it will be hard on the healer. The bird also continually damages itself, so one DPS should be fine. When it dies it become an egg, and the egg heals. When it's fully healed the bird will be back. At half health, the second phase occurs again and is more or less the same as normal. Kill bird, resume boss damage, range kits the phoenix. Stay out of sunfire and the fire on the ground. One thing to keep in mind, ranged kiters, is when he transition he pulls you to him, and this can launch you very high in the air, and when you land you'll take massive fall damage if you were far away.

Note there is a pretty nasty bug on this fight. After his 2nd phase ends, he always throws you an equal distance away as he drew you in. But in a random direction. My first kill of this, I was the kiter, was far away, and was thrown outside the actual instance area at the end of the phase. And could not help finish the fight.

Even on Normal, this can be a difficult fight. As one of the two choices for the second boss encounter in Tol'Vir, Barim has a variety of tools at his disposal to make you want to rip your hair out.

In Phase 1, it seemingly appears to be a slightly odd tank n' spank. I say "slightly odd" because there will be an occasional beam of light that appears to nuke a certain spot, and if DPS does not move out of it, they WILL get severely hurt (17k on a Resto Shaman, 28k on a Mage).

Phase 2 is where things get tricky. Before entering into this phase, Barim will suck everyone in and cast on your entire party. He will then send you into a "Nightmare" phase, where a Dark Phoenix will spawn. The object of this phase is to kill the Phoenix. However, during this period of time, Soul Fragments will spawn that look like your characters. Depending on if your DPS is strong enough, you can either choose to kite the Phoenix away from the fragments, or, more traditionally, you can kill the fragments and then return your attention to the Phoenix. Regardless of which option you choose, it is imperative that you keep the fragments away from the Phoenix.

Once the Phoenix is dead, Barim returns to the first phase, and you are able to finish him off.

This can be a very tricky fight if your entire party is not at the top of their game, so good luck!

Since this page appears to be bugged or not have data, going to add my experience in Normal.

Phase 1

Calls Sun Beams from the sky on a target location, move out of them they do damage over time
Casts Repentance on the entire group, incapacitating them, goes into Phase 2
As he goes into Phase 2 he puts down Hallowed Ground, about 30yds around him, do not stand in it for Phase 2

Phase 2

Enter a soul world, a Harbinger of Darkness appears
Periodic Soul Fragments are summoned, each one seems to give the Harbinger 20% damage, either kill or kite
When the Harbinger dies you return to Phase 1

Just a note loot wise. This boss on heroic currently drops the only 346 ilvl legs for physical mail dps. None from reps etc. The only alternative is the 346 from stormwind for 2200 JP's. Keep this in mind when looking at your leg upgrades as enhance/hunter.

This fight can be quite the pain on heroic. Some things that may help:

The phoenix in phase 1 does damage to itself and will eventually die after 15-20 seconds. It can be extremely beneficial to have a ranged class kite this thing around and keep it away from the rest of the group. I've had much success doing this with a death knight. Once it's dead, get back to the boss and keep an eye on when the phoenix is going to res. This can do wonders for your healer and his mana pool.

Warrior tanks: Fifty lashings is quite painful, aside from keeping demo shout up, utilize heroic leap in an emergency to buy your healer some time if you're looking low on health.

Heroic:

Two Phases: Light and Shadow phase
Light Phase:
- He can buff his melee damage quite a lot, so make use of defensive CDs
NOTE: He can be disarmed to migitate this effect A LOT. Ideally you will want to disarm him, that his Fifty Lashings expires during the duration
- Let either ranged DPS or the tank kite the phoenix around. I prefer using the tank (Warriors can easily dot him through Blood and Thunder), as this boss is pretty heavy on healer mana, so the faster the boss goes down, the easier it is for your healer.
- Walk out of those pillars of light, they nuke for around 20k per tick and they tick fast
At 50% Shadow Phase begins

Shadow Phase:
Barim pulls everyone to him and stuns you. Barim will remain inactive with an AE aura around him (the glowing ground) and a Harbinger of Shadow will spawn.
- Tank the Harbinger and kite him away from adds.
- Soul fragments will spawn and try to walk to him. If they reach him, they heal him for about 50k and he gets a 20% damage buff. Ranged DPS should burn these.
NOTE: Both the harbinger and the fragments can be tanked / kited into the flame patches from the phoenix for additional DPS
When the Harbinger dies, Light Phase repeats.

A note for tanks: During the Fifty Lashings thing, kite him around. You'll take far less damage and your healers will thank you. Priests, if you've got it, use Leap of Faith on the tank to help them kite if they ask for it. Heck, if you see the tank going down, use it anyway.

Heroic mode. Probably worth a mention that the soul shards can be slowed by ice traps etc. Definitely worth doing as quite a few spawn and they will cause a wipe if the reach the phoenix. On normal no need to worry.

best way of doing this unless you want the achievement for it is to simply get any pet with avoidance (90% reduced aoe damage) and sic em onto the phoenix, they merrily smack away at each other, with the bird hitting like a wet noodle on your trusty minion, as a lock my healing from fel synergy was more than enough to keep my felpup of felguard up, depending on my spec.
im not sure if hunters have any equivalent talent to fel synergy but if they did it would be rather useful, otherwise its mend pet or a healer.
your pet keeps it pinned down and saves alot of damage, nothing worse than a phoenix of firey death coming in for a snoop around right on the p2 interchange when youre all clustered together and stunned.

however if youre going for the achieve then yes its alot better to manually tank them so that you can spread a wide arc of fire around, best method ive found is to make a circle wide enough that the tank can kite around it in p2, with the spawnd frags running having to pass through, although its alot easier with ranged.

We had some problems with this boss until we changed tactics in phase two.

While in the shadow world we found that the easiest way to deal with the shadowphoenix was to ignore the shadow adds and just move the phoenix around to avoid them instead. The adds move really slow and the phoenix can be burned down pretty fast if all dps is focused on it and not on the shadow adds.

Just as a warning, do NOT get too far away from Barim when he gets close to the 50% mark. If you get too far away from him (kiting the phoenix add in phase 1) and he casts Repentance, he will pull you towards him in an arc like path. The further away you are, the higher the arc.

When he pulled me in for Repentance, I was killed by fall damage, and then when the rest of the group finished phase 2, he flung my corpse on top of a building a good 150 feet away (not the spot I died in), so I could not be battle-resed.

Funny story, but let it be a word of warning to everyone else!

If you have a hunter with a turtle in the party, part 1 becomes a cake-walk. All you have to do is MD once to the turtle, and turn on Growl. As long as you remember to use mend pet, your turtle has defensive skills, and has at least 100k HP, the turtle should not die. This removes the problem of trying to kite, and removes the possibility of the healer to pull threat from kiter due to heals.

I found that if you dps the egg heavily, when the phoenix hatches, it has far less health and is very quickly killed again. It worked for my group tonight doing it that way and there was a lot less fire on the ground to worry about. After phase 2, I just killed it once and then switched to the boss having saved my rapid fire cooldown for that.

Note to hunters - When he casts Repentance, don't pop Bestial Wrath. you will break out of repentance and die in the real world while everyone else is fighting in the shadow realm.
