Given the time I'm posting this, there's no one on live realms yet that has gotten up to killing this guy for the Threat From Above quest after you become a Champion.

I decided to take a poke at him, to see what I'll be up against once I hit Champion.

I'm telling you right now, the "Suggested Players " isn't a joke. He hits like a truck and the Cultist Bombardier adds do ranged firebomb damage, making this a problematic solo fight at best, and extremely short and messy at worst.

No strats as of yet for him, I've got 2 more days until my guild and I are doing the Champion's dailies. Once we're beating the snot out of him, I'll post back.

If you are having trouble with this, you may consider farming some Vrykul Bones and handing them in to The Bone Witch at the cave in Jotunheim for Reading the Bones. The quest awards your choice a rune that grants a 30 minute buff (usable only in Icecrown): Fate Rune of Baneful Intent, Fate Rune of Fleet Feet, Fate Rune of Nigh Invincibility, Fate Rune of Primal Energy, Fate Rune of Unsurpassed Vigor.

I didn't require any of these to solo the mob, but they could make up for a lack of gear or other disadvantages.

I managed to solo this guy as a Resto shaman in mostly 25 naxx gear (and a bit of maly, but i digress) he didn't hit very hard and my Earth shield was able to mitigate most of his hits. with talents and glyphs it heals up to 5k+ so i just sat down and used Lightning bolt on him until he died, using the fire ele as my major CD

be sure to tag the mobs, i had to pull him a second time because the fire ele killed them before i got a hit in, so i didn't get credit for it. =/

This is probably the best advice for this fight, doesn't matter if you're trying to solo it or in a group.

Chillmaw himself hits pretty dang hard (I think I was getting crit for 5k in 47% armor) and does a breath attack.
Chillmaw is immune to Turn Evil (he's undead, so of course other fears and horrors are out of the question as well).

Overall the movement is the most important part in reducing damage taken. The bombardiers throw bombs on the ground under your feet, so even when you get away from them, you have to keep moving.

The Bombardiers are totally CCable (I was able to stun and disorient them).

Chillmaw has a predictable oval path. Towards the North end, he's low enough to be engaged by melee. I put my Felguard on stay in his path, slightly South of where he skims the surface, and I positioned just North within range of health funnel.

The fight was slow: I used Curse of Weakness, Corruption and Immolate. I alternated between Health Funnel and Drain Life, strafing from side to side 20 yards or so. When the bombers came down at 75, 50 and 25 percent, I feared them and applied dots. By doing slow, consistent dps, I was able to kill each add before the next dropped down.

The first time, I went all out on Chillmaw and wiped. By using slower dps and taking on adds one-by-one, I was able to finish the fight easily.

One odd note is when I tried to HM it or Aimed shot/MD it I got an error

"Cannot be cast on beastmaster or invis god targets"

Soloable as an SV-Hunter, just keep moving and max dps (let your pet pull with active mend pet on it, in addition use your MD).
If you aggro give your pet some time to reggen (deterrence), then FD und kill him. :>

just keep mend pet up!

of course 2p T5 is a great help :D

Soloable by boomkin druids, just try geting the him down before the bombers comes and throw bombs at you, I was able to get him to 50% then I just ran, Moonfire/IS and hoped my trees would kill him before he killed me.

After he was dead it was only to run and dot the adds.
Using starfall helped alot by almost killing two of the adds while it was up.

Very easy solo for an enh shaman. Drop your SoE+WF totem, pull him, drop searing, pop wolves, BL shamanisti rage even to minimize damage. And he's dead 20 seconds later and you can kill the adds while most of your CDs are up.

Just soloed this guy as a bear druid. Starts off sort of slow. He doesn't hit you that much so you don't generate much rage. Once a bombardier drops down and start whacking on you, you generate more. I waited until then to pop trinket cooldowns and Barkskin. Be sure you move around, because the adds will drop bombs on the ground that explode after a certain amount of time, and if you're too close to them, they do a good 4K chunk of damage. I saved Survival Instincts and Frenzied Regen as long as I could.

Seems like the above poster hasn't updated much, so I will offer my input for those that are having trouble or doubts whether they can solo this or not.

Duo'ed as a prot warrior and frost mage. Chillmaw himself doesn't hit very hard. He flies a good 20 yards above the ground, so you will need to range pull him or body pull him on your flying mount. When Chillmaw starts getting low on health three level 80 "elite" Cultist Bombardiers will be summoned one shortly after another. However, they're not actually elites in that they don't hit anywhere near elite damage.

Chillmaw

Melee hits for 1500 after mitigation against a tank (can be fully blocked).
Frost breath for 3000+.

Cultist Bombardiers have three attacks and have just a little more health than your average level 80 mob:

400 melee damage (after mitigation).
1100 fire damage from their "Throw Dynamite" spell. Cast regularly.
Drops ticking "Time Bombs" at irregular intervals that will detonate for 4000-5000 damage after a short period. Can be avoided by simply moving away from the stationary bomb.

I soloed this quest as a holy paladin, Greldin on Dentarg.

First I simply dpsed Chillmaw and kept myself up, I didn't know that the adds would spawn after a time but I kinda noticed that the tactic of choice was to run away from boms, pop concentration, holy wrath and exorcism whenever it's up. I had to bubble once because I got really much damage for missing the bombs once.

It's not easy, but certainly soloable. The paladin class has always been a solo-class anyway.

Soloed him pretty safely as a 80 prot warrior, using mixed naxx 10/25 gear.

Kept Thunderclap and Demo shout up on Chillmaw, and switched to the Bombardier's as they spawned.

Remember to do a Commanding shout + Last stand + Enraged regeneration when you get low on hp, and pop Shield wall any time you get a bombardier. And don't forget that the Bombardier's are fully stunnable and interruptable; I reduced a lot of damage by shield bashing and stunning them.

As a geared feral this is retardedly easy. Just put your bear gear on and Maul your way to victory. With full 25 man gear Imp LotP and Savage Defense was basically negating all the damage I took.

Not that easily soloable as a rogue, but definitely doable. Used full pve gear with combat talents, opened with killing spree and evasion. Ended combat with 800 hp left.

fairly easy solo as PvP ret pally, backpedal, CC adds when able

used JoL, Seal of Wisdom, Kings. use SS and FoL procs, ended up only having to holy light twice, didn't bubble or wings (probably be easier with either)

If you're having difficulty soloing Chillmaw, it may be worth trying to kite him to the Shadow Vault. As a Holy Pally the kiting method is incredibly easy, with raid level gear you should easily be able to keep yourself topped up just using Holy Shock + Sacred Shield.

Soloed as a BM hunter, but it wasn't exactly graceful. Spec (as well as pet's talent tree) is specialized to buff the pet as much as possible for tanking as well, sacrificing DPS.

Barely got Chill dead before crab pet finally succumbed to dynamite, had to feign off the bombadiers. Interesting tidbit, the bombadiers will reset to Chill's corpse and kick back. They do not despawn. (At least, they didn't despawn in the 5 or so min it took me to get myself ready for fighting again.)

Going to keep working at this; I know I can make it cleaner, but I doubt I will be able to pull this off without doing the fight in two parts.

Cake as a frost DK tank, used AoTD to start and had him at 10 percent by the time ghouls had died in tank gear. Next time I'll just put dps gear on, let the ghouls tank, and zerg it without a second thought. I didn't even notice the bombers untill after he was dead.

Soloed as a Protection Paladin with heroic level gear, wasn't easy though, I'd recommend using Fire Resistance Aura and ignoring the adds while moving away from the bombs on the ground until Chillmaw is dead. Chillmaw himself doesn't hit that hard, in fact I can fully block his attacks, but the constant fire damage from the adds as well as his frost breathe drain my health slowly.

If no one is around I can usually solo him as an ulduar geared survival hunter. For the set up I use my 2 piece tier 5, and a turtle as a tank. With mend pet and the set bonus I can keep him up for the whole fight on Chillmaw. I kill each bomber as they land, they like to stop and throw time bombs at you which makes kiting them very easy. Once the third one lands I finish off Chillmaw though, as he is in kill shot range.

One thing to note is that Chillmaw is in an instances portion of icecrown. if you run too far west while kiting the bombers you can actually de-zone and Chillmaw will disappear. This can be useful if you are about to die, or problematic if you are about to kill him. Be careful where you run to.

Very easy to solo as an enhancement shaman.... maelstrom + wolves = insane selfheal :) I just moved backwards so I avoided some bombs, popped a BL, 3.5k dps .. piece of cake :)

As a Hunter who kept 2 pieces of the old Rift Stalker set (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/itemset=652) This is very easy to solo, specced Marksmanship.

I use a Tenacity pet, drop a Freezing Trap, Misdirect onto pet, keeping up Mend Pet in the process of DPSing it down, first mob will be lured towards you from the healing and trapped, then I set a second trap for next add, and Readiness for the third - by this time though Chillmaw is usually dead and the first add has broke free, but it's very easy from then on, just avoid the bombs on the ground.

Warlock strat- Have Voidwalker tank Chillmaw, use corruption and ONLY corruption on him, keep voidwalker health funneled to keep him alive, when cultists come down, dot them up, fear spam and drain life while keeping voidwalker alive and keeping corruption on chillmaw, avoid the bombs, when cultist dies, rinse and repeat

DK strat, Spam Death Strike on Chillmaw, Pestilence diseases onto the cultists when they come down then spam deathstrike on them till they die , repeat

Soloed by a 80 blood dk. with 4k health left.Just use army of the dead your normal ghoul and dancing rune weapon.. Just remember to move around when the cultist come out

This is difficult to solo as a BM hunter with a tenacity pet, even wearing PvP gear to boost the pet's HP.

I'd advise at least 2 manning it, as me and a blood death knight did this with ease. Twice in a row without heals, even.

Solo as an 80 Affliction Warlock practically every day.

Tips:
-Have a port set up for when dealing with adds after Chillmaw
-Have Demon Armor up for a double in armor, thus blocking twice as much physical damage
**Also, you'll be receiving more healing from all your spells, increased bu 26% if spec'd into Demonic Aegis, tier 3 of Demonology
-Have your Voidwalker out, only use his bubble if your under 50% health
-As each mob comes down, place a Corruption on them, and have your Voidwalker attack them
**This will be giving you a second source of healing yourself
-Use Howl of Terror if needed when they're are too many mobs around you
-Use a regular Affliction sequence on Chillmaw: Haunt, UA, Corr, CoA; CoW won't be of much help since Chillmaw should go down pretty fast, he's only the scale of about 8-10 mobs
*REMINDER: Death Coil, besides the Voidwalker Sacrafice bubble (which only takess roughly 2k health of your Voidwalker), will be 1 of your 2 main sources of survival from near death in this fight

If played right, and some more practice, it's possible to never go below 100% health w/ all the healing spells up. Though the trickiest part would be keeping full focus of healing spells on Chillmaw, while still making sure the adds aren't on you and that they are all have Corruption up on them. G'luck.

fury warrior in beserker stance. glyph of enraged regen and bloodthirst, pop a potion, 5 sunders. demo shout + fear the adds, battlestance > retaliate > zerker > recklessness whirlwind = insta death to adds as they come back, keep stance dancing/thunderclapping. basically, debuff the &*!@ outta him and you got it made. walk backwards the whole time. don't stop walking. the bombs will kill you. i used battle shout just fyi and had a warlock cookie from the raid prior (i need to stop forgetting i pick those up).

This guy and his cronies can be soloed by my enhancement shaman with mostly ilevel 200 gear by kiting him around in circles and using the fire elemental to pick up the bombers once they appear, he is immune to fire damage and their melee hits are weak so he makes an awesome tank for them.

(Make sure to use your fire resistance totem however as they throw dynamite at you which hurts)

The strategy I use is to use lightning bolt to pull chillmaw northwards to an extrude in the terrain then drop my fire elemental and wait for his blast nova to attract the bombers, once he has them I move chillmaw away, then summon and taunt him with my spirit wolves and use heroism / bloodlust (plus my gift of the naaru being a draenei and my lifeblood spell being a herbalist, which may give me something of an advantage here) and shamanistic rage.

(Pulling him northwards between the large and small terrain extrusions tends to keep your attempt out of sight of other players who may try to help but end up screwing up your pull, and also from gaining aggro from chillmaw again due to a respawn while you are still handling the bombers.)

Chillmaw himself drops very fast at this point, keep flame shock up and use maelstrom stacks for free heals where possible as a couple of crits and or decent hits can eat your health in seconds, remember to keep moving him around in circles because of the bombers and use spirit walk to run out of frost breath as often as possible.

Once chillmaw is down you can go for the bombers one at a time who should still be attacking the fire elemental, wait for your shamanistic rage to come off cooldown or use a mana potion if needed, though even if you fail at this point there is time for you to return as a ghost and heal up before killing the remaining bombers as they do not despawn immediately.

Be careful of pulling chillmaw past the aforementioned terrain extrusion however, as his area appears to be phased like most of icecrown and it will cause the whole thing to reset.

Soloing this is all in the pull, practice the above until you get it right every time and this quest will become second nature.

Soloable as Ret. If you can stay alive against Chillmaw alone before any guys jump down you should be ok. SoL and AoW instant heal whenever you can. As soon as a bomber jumps down, focus on him and make sure you move out of every ticking bomb. After he's dead, return DPS to Chillmaw. Repeat 2 times, then finish off Chillmaw.

Much easier than the time I tried to burn down Chillmaw and save the adds for last!

I thought to give this one a try alone because it was 2.30 a.m and I was surprised how easy he was for me. I'm a protection build paladin now with around 90% avoidance, 560 defence and 29k buffed HP (Blessing of Sanctuary).

I thought first to use the frost resistance aura but found out it wasn't needed. I just stood there and barley took damage. Used Sacred shield and Flash of Light when needed. When the bombardiers came I just moved myself around so I never stood on any of the bombs he spawned and just focused on Chillmaw all the time. Consecration up all the time along with Holy shield.

He was at around 40% when I had to use my lay on hands mostly because I was out of mana. But I used that once, never had to use Divine Shield. Used Divine Protection though which I think might have helped some but other than that.

A simple fight for a protection build paladin, or at least that's what I think. Downed him solo on my first attempt.

soloing it a fg/embe lock.pet tanks.dps very very slowly,and when say say slowly i mean #$%^ing slowly.When each add drop insta kill it.don't put any curses on the big bad dragon or u will insta pull (cause health funnel already makes much aggro).And obviously don't let demon die-avoid bombs

Was able to solo this quest as a prot warrior.
33,6k hp unbuffed tho it wasn't all that easy.
As soon as the adds start to spawn just keep running from them and try to stun them as much as possible.

First try i made i killed chillmaw then respawned and killed the adds easy after that.

Solo'd as enhancement shaman, badge/htoc geared, no need to be a tank or kite. I didn't even use consumables/pots.

Just blow cooldowns and kill him before he kills you.

I was able to solo him as an enhancement shaman in mostly Naxx 10 gear and around that level. I was amazed I could but I dropped Magma Strength of Earth Windfury and Healing stream and went through my normal rotation Stormstrike, Earth Shock, and Lava Lash and when I had maelstrom at full used Healing Wave and I used Feral Spirit and had them take the bombadiers and once Magma was gone I used my Fire Elemental and took me about a minute to kill him had no mana left at the end though.

I just solo'ed Chillmaw as a discipline priest. I used my pvp discpline spec and pve (Ulduar25-TOC25) gear. PVP gear keeps me alive much easier, but runs out of mana way too fast.

A few suggestions:
- Save desperate prayer for real emergency. It'll get nuts toward the end.
- Shield yourself every time it's up.
- You'll need to redo inner fire at least twice during the fight.
- Burn power infusion on the pull for some extra damage.
- Fear the first bombadier when he lands, but then don't fear until you get the second to land.
- Save pain suppression for when you've 2-3 bombadiers on you and your fear and shields are on cooldown.
- Might be worth using the pvp gloves for the -2 second weakened soul effect. I didn't think to use mine.
- Pull out shadowfiend after the first bombadier lands. Your mana will have dipped a bit, and you'll wanna get a lot of dps on the boss to get the second to land.
- Penance yourself whenever you can. Free shields = good thing.
- Basic Campfire. +4 spirit = win! ; )
- If things get a little ugly, try an inner focus / divine hymn combo. It's free, the +25% crit is awesome and the spell can proc a free shield on yourself. Don't use this when your health is too low though, as you'll like take some bomb damage and perhaps the dragon will breathe on you. It'll add up, but if you're at 50% and wanna burn 10 seconds for cooldowns to refresh, this can be useful.
- It'll be tempting to burn down the dragon when he hits 15,000 health or so. Don't give into it. Keep yourself high on health, keep fearing the adds, and let your DOTs do the trick with the occasional mind blast or smite.
- Once the dragon is down, fear the adds, hymn of hope for some mana, and clean up the rest.

It's a tough battle, and a worthy challenge for a discipline priest. Those that like challenging fights will relish the encounter.

ok just soloed as a blood dk only using rune tap twice just to keep my health bar full and used death strike the rest of the time to heal. just kill bombers as they spawn then go back to chillmaw and avoid the time bombs by moving out of melee range (5-10 second fuse). gear wise i have 26khp in frost pres have 19% dodge and 17.5% parry rate with 430 defense average item level of 201.

Should be soloable by every player who can self-heal and who doesn't get instant-WTF-shot left and right. I first did it with ~23k HP, 536 def, 32% avoidance (dodge+parry), etc.

Just stick to spamming self-heal and staying out of the timed bombs. I found it to be rather comfortable picking off the bombardiers as they dropped off however. That way, you won't be annoyed by bombs all the time AND you won't re-aggro Chillmaw because you took too long killing the bombardiers afterwards.

Might have to throw up a bubble once, but it's really not to much of a sweat. 80 Heroics tanking gear.

Hmm, odd. I think you might be doing it wrong. I play a Protection pally (recently switched from Ret and only up to ~500 defense, and I can solo this with no problem. I use this build.
My strategy is as follows:

Throw up Frost Resist Aura (not really needed, but the mitigation is nice)
Use Divine Plea (the mana regen is good when coupled with Guarded by the Light (100% chance to refresh Divine Plea upon melee hit)
Throw an Avenger's Shield to start the battle. I typically use Seal of Wisdom throughout the fight, switching to Seal of Light if I need health (despite using Judgment of Light, I still take enough damage.)
Focus on the Bombardiers when they spawn, kiting them out of range of the bombs.

Profit. And by profit, I mean never having to find a group again. Now, I just need to learn to solo Citadel...

Easy soloed as Protection Paladin - 37k HP
Without healing myslef, but you need always move, because of bombs.
Simply have buffed Divine Plea and Judgement of the Light on your target and you will not have problem.

summon ghoul and death pact to heal if you need too. and also after chillmaw is down kite the bombers around. stay out of the blast zones if possible

just solo'd chillmaw.
...level 80 unholy DK in blood presence
first cleared that elite level 80 skeletal guard patroling the walkway near by.

then stood on the edge where the path bricks and snow meet.

death grip
army of the dead
death and decay
plague strike
obliterate
then normal rotations...
once bombers appeared i used pestilence in with my rotations along with blood boils too
also threw up icebound Fortitude.

once chilly was dead, corpse explosion....
i threw chains of ice on 1 bomber
then normal rotations. bombers go down quick

my gear is a mix of a few 226 on up to 245.
my weapons are rimfang's claw (232) and empowered death bringer ...both halso have rune of the fallen crusader

when i was all done, my health was at about 55%

A shamans' fire elemental makes a good tank for the daily where you have to kill this npc and you only have ranged with you as his blast wave like spell is good for hoovering up those adds that spawn and drop ticking bombs

I haven't checked but I'm guessing they do fire damage since they hardly seem to damage that big fluffy flame pillow.

Soloed as dk(80). Once you get the hang of it, pretty easy.
Kept kiting to avoid those bombs the adds throw and when those adds appeared I killed them first before I went to Chillmaw again.

I usually solo this guy, here's what I do:
(As a Demo lock)
First of all, Buff up. I use Kibler's Bits, Steaming Chicken Soup, and the mandatory Firestone, Fel armor, and Glyphed Soulstone, just in case. Also create a Healthstone

Fist, activate Metamorphosis, and Demonic Empowerment. Send your pet in, then DoT up (No Curse of Doom, as, when done properly, he won't last that long.)
You might also want to pop any trinkets you have, at this moment.
Nuke Chillmaw as hard as you can (Immololate - Incinerate, you know the drill.)
As soon as the first Bombardier pops up, activate Immolation Aura, Keep up your DoTs, and use Shadow Cleave as often as possible. you'd want to switch to using Seed of Corruption by now, to DPS down the Bombardiers, along with Shadowflame (preferably glyphed, so you can outrun them, just by dodging the bombs)
Don't forget to watch your health. Use Death Coil, your Healthstone, or a potion when necessary.

I must add that I've only managed to do this when properly geared (ICC 10/25 / T10 gear).

I, as a decently geared spriest, once accidentally pulled this guy. I panicked, and also couldn't believe I hadn't died and I had kited him all the way up to Shadow Vault. I thought it would end there, because he could wipe Vile in about 3 hits, but SOMEHOW I managed to get him all the way in Shadow Vault before I died. Shortly after he died, but of course I didn't get credit.
I tried again but he reset (this was right after the first time, by the way)

There was a time when pulling this guy through the phase as the shadow vault caused him and the bombers to vanish, this is no longer the case and he can now be kited there.

I don't know when this was changed but I pulled him and a bone sentinel there yesterday and just left them there.

Him and the bombers managed to take out vile, the flight master several guards and a couple of vendors before the guards managed to finish them all off.

Didn't see any Frost Mage comments so I'll chime in that this was pretty easy to solo for me as a mostly 251 geared one. I started off by popping Mirror Images and pulling, had Ice Barrier and Mage Ward active and between DF/Brain Freeze FoF procs Chillmaw never even hit me before he went down.

I didn't need to invis after downing Chillmaw or sheep any cultists. It was pretty much tank and spank, just avoid the bombs on the ground, water elemental and images took the smacking for me.

I've solo'd this as a Fire Mage (average ilevel of 259) - keep Mana Shield on yourself; and keep Living Bomb and Critical Mass up on Chilly (Hot Streak on proc, obviously) - popped Mirrors and trinks early on - LB the cultists as they spawn - pewpew Chilly until dead, Blastwave the cultists to slow 'em down, Nova them if they happen to get close - run around to avoid the bombs, etc.

i have no idea why people are having trouble with this quest and npc.

i just soloed him in regular justice gear, a few pieces at that... and wasnt even close to dying.

i have 30k hp and have no raid gear whatsoever.

i used a turtle to tank, shot him in on chillmaw and stood and waited for the bombers to appear, killed them as they spawned one by one. I got hit by a few bombs because u will not see them til they show themselves after a few bombs go off. I got hit a couple times by all 3 as they spawned and had no problem whastoever...by the time i killed the 3rd bomber chillmaw was close to death and I simply shot a few arcanes and kill shot him.

i have nothing spectacular on my bm hunter whatsoever, and most of you are saying you have much better gear and cannot solo this? seriously dont see how you guys are having problems if i can finish this with half to 3 quarters of life left after getting hit by their bombs just as you....and all of you have much much better gear.
its all bout mechanics and knowing how to play your class.
I have a 3rd of hp compared to most of you just over 30k.
id be rolling another class...or somethin.
