I went to Teldrassil to pickpocket these from Bloodfeather harpies. To my disappointment, after pickpocketing about 20 of them I had a total amount of ZERO malachites. Guess it's been changed in CATA. Don't know how about other mobs...

You can easily get these from prospecting Copper Ore and if you're leveling JC I would suggest holding onto them because you will need them.

Just had a Fleshripper in Westfall drop one and them kill a Defias and drop it as well. Two minus last did some mining in the same area and got three more.
Turned them in to 5 crude scope and sold them for 25 silver each within 5 minus. Easy money!

I find that malachite sells reliably for 1-3s per piece at auction. That is, I put it up with a 1s/piece starting bid and a buyout of 3s/piece and almost always have it bought out.

I'm on Azshara and the Auction House has the cheapest single malachite listed for 20s/25s with the most expensive (single) listed for 50s/60s... a pack of 20 listed for 16g! Total crap!

This might be your very first green loot ;)

It drops from lvl 5-15 mobs, as far as I know. Used for engineering, jewelcrafting and blacksmithing. Usually I manage to sell them 5s/gem, which makes me satisfied ;)

I am pretty convinced that atleast one of these drops per one RFC-run, they are really common. I like using them to make squirrels and sell 1g piece :]
