But, you might say, tanking weapon?
Hit is a given, tanks without hit = not good.
And mastery gives Block for Paladins and Warriors and what ever DK's and Druids get.

Effectively, Mastery is the new block stat, but more useful.

Considering the only other tanking weapon up until now seems to be 覆亡之锤, I think this will also be looted by tanks. Both stats are of great use to a tank, who is less likely to get enough hit from tanking gear and can always use some more especially if threat is to be an issue.

Honestly with stamina normalization in gear, and with reforging available, I think any hit/expertise/mastery Strength item is now fair game for tanks.

Just got this weapon tonight as a protection paladin and proceeded to use it in multiple raid encounters. I have to say that this weapon works beautifully for a protadin. Definitely allow tanks to roll for this and, if your guild wants geared tanks, give them priority, as there is a distinct lack of tanking weapons available.

Lack of tanking weapons? Indeed. But there's also a lack of +str dps 1 handers. In fast there's only one other and it drops from Magmaw. Give this to your DPS first, they don't want your tanking weapons.

As far as the Tank/DPS argument goes:

With tank threat not really being an issue, what you're really weighing is the extra survivability stats of this sword against whatever weapon the tank is already using. Since hit is a threat stat and not really a survivability stat, this weapon is contributing 25 stamina and 11 mastery over something like the 346 version of the Elementium Fang, and losing 86 parry rating. Over a Cookie's Tenderizer, the tank is gaining 11 hit rating, 11 mastery rating, and 25 stamina.

With that in mind, I would give this to a DPS over a tank in a heartbeat. The main cause of wipes that I've run into isn't that tanks that can't take the damage, it's DPS inadequacies that are causing fights to be prolonged past the endurance of the healers, if not running into enrage timers outright.

The TL;DR version is that I've seen a lot of kills right at the enrage timer, and wipes due to enrage timers. I've seen a lot of wipes that have made me say "If we had a bit more DPS, we'd have had that." On the other hand, I have never seen a wipe that's made me say "If only my tank had maybe 11 more mastery rating and maybe 350ish more health, we'd have so had that."

I personally believe that this is an awesome tank weapon. Sure, threat isn't an issue and this would be a great boost to a dps class but with Rebuke going baseline for paladins and warrior tanks already having thei interrupt, hit capping for tanks provides a reliable interrupt. Doesn't dps drop when they have to focus on interrupting? Tanks hit capping to interrupt frees up a melée dps to focus on purely dpsing.

Well the wep you linked is fine for a Warrior, And even an Unholy DK but if your DK is frost he should get priority on Soul Blade because it is his BiS weapon pre Heroic mode. Haste is a wasted stat for Frost. Also your argument

Is really a stupid argument in its own, No tank stats make it not a tank wep. With every tanks, And a few raid leaders logic I have seen on this forum it would be totally acceptable for a DPS to win and to reforge the parry off 覆亡之锤 into something good like.... crit, hit, or exp. You would not allow your DPS to roll on that mace Just because it has STR and a higher amount of DPS than dungeon heroic weps. Reforging should not be the determining factor in who gets what. Loot should never be based on who "Can reforge this and make it work for me" The reason Frost DK's want this sword (Soul Blade) is this, Mastery is the second best stat for us under Strength. And the hit is useful for us, As hit is useful for every DPS class. (Up to a point)

I obtained this and Heaving Plates of Protection earlier today on my paladin, Ellura-The Maelstrom. The best way my guild found to efficiently farm epics from the Bastion of Twilight is as follows.

Step 1. Use Crowd Control, Polymorph for example, on three of the four mobs in the first pack.
Step 2. Let the tank aggro the one mob that is pulled.
Step 3. Proceed to kill the mob, and then pull and attack another mob until only one ' CC ' remains on a single mob.
Step 4. Loot all corpses, making sure to check for the epics.
Step 5. Leave the instance. Once all raid members are out, you may re-enter.
Step 6. Repeat steps 1 - 6 again. The pack respawns entirely as you leave one mob under Crowd Control.

I do see a few arguments on the DPS/tank debate, but one thing some need to consider is raid make up. If a raid has no plate DPS (likely in 10-mans, possible in 25s) then this sword would be a suitable upgrade for at least warrior and paladin tanks (feel like I can't comment on DK DW tanking and druids can't use swords), and then there are those that carry different sets of gear for different encounters. This would make a fine threat/DPS/farming/trash weapon for a tank while the mace from BWD would/could be better for progression/survival based fights.

When stats can go either way, most see it as an upgrade for their respective specs and know they can reforge (like the hit on this to dodge or parry) if they so choose. I agree that reforging should not be taken into consideration when deciding who gets what, but only to the extent that if the original stats are better for one then another (haste/crit are DPS only stats) then they should get pref, making a reforging roll the same as off-spec.

Those that claim this as a DPS only weapon likely see hit as worthless for tanks, it is not something they usually want to reforge into admitiedly but a bit here and there does not hurt, as vengence does help but can be unnoticible if 7-9 out of every 10 attacks miss (extream example I know).

Most reasonable tanks will likely look at this and take it as an upgrade if it is not for their main set or they have yet to get better (the mace in BWD).

to finish it off the mace in bwd has a drop rate from 20% wich will drop alot but the sword a droprate of 1,2 to 4% eventually u might get alot of those swords but thats not gonna happen anytime soon

we all know how long it takes to hunt down a 4%drop andthats in the best case an average its like a1,9% if you take to account the elites arent as abundant as the low ones

a mending enchant for tanks to top it off and it looks amazing

Fairly easy to obtain, saw 3 of them on the AH for ~18 gold. Since gold is practicly given away in Cata it won't take long before you can get your hands on this weapon + the amount of BoT trash run's are common and easely made. If your not the raiding type / gold-farmer, you can always get a descend replancement for this: 残忍角斗士的军刀 - wich is a Pvp sword sold for 2450 ''Conquest'', wich will take. 5 Wins a week in Arena = the Conquest cap of 1300(and something more) so 10 wins in 2 weeks will give this epic. Its not the best for pve but it won't hurt your damage. It's just a suggestion.

Humans have Mace Specialization in addition to swords, so when debating between this weapon and the Mace of Acrid Death from Maloriak that argument has no bearing.

PPL are totaly crazy on my server, (Xavius EU) i have seen many ppl selling this sword for 16k+ gold!

I estimate its true value to be 16,000 - 24,000 (low-med pop) 12,000 - 20,000 (high pop)

While epic 85 item prices are still a little crazy and irratic on all servers, there are some easy ways to determine a realistic AH price for sellers and buyers.

Weapons & Armor
1. Any item's true value is allways relative to server population.
for example: a higly populated server generaly has lower prices due to surplus of avalable lvl 85 epic Weapons&Armor causing daily undercutting wars lowering item value below its true value.

There are 2 lvl's of epic 85 armor;
LvL 1 . BoE Epic 85 crafted
LvL 2 . BoE Epic 85 raid drop

There is only 1 lvl of epic 85 weapons from raid drops.

This makes the BoE crafted epic 85 by nature cheap (mats prices)
This makes epic armor less valuable because u can get a fair equivilant to BoE raid drops via crafting.
This means by default the epic 85 raid drop weapons are the rarest and therefore worth the most.

2. Any item''s true value is also relative to its droprate, a lower droprate epic 85(or max lvl) item will allways be the most expensive and worthwile purchases and also generate small-large fotunes for the seller.

This weapon is the BiS for most warrior/paladin tanks and all dw frost dks. All three classes should be allowed to roll on this BoE. However, if the tanks already have one of these bad boys or the dw frost dk has none or only one of these, they should have priority. The reason I say this is by simply upgrading my 346 heroic Smite's Reaver to the Soul Blade on my main, my dps went up 2k! Compared to the slight improvement from the 346 tank one hander to this for keeping aggro on a boss (which most good tanks have no problem with), I would say it leans more heavily to the dw frost dks out there.

When one of these rarely pops up on the auction house on my server they sell for like ~20,000g yet on a server I transferred from there were 4 listed all at 10k which I'd gladly pay, I really suck at picking servers...

The problem tanks have these days is that they have to balance their stats between threat and survivability, whereas dps classes only have to put their stats into doing the most damage possible. One school of thought is that tanks should only worry about survival stats and use their taunt abilities to make up for any loss in threat. That's fine against enemies that aren't taunt-immune, but there are enough taunt-immune bosses and mobs in the current dungeon and raid content to justify getting hit-capped as a tank. And when the tank is hit-capped they not only do more damage, but almost never have to use a taunt to hold their threat.

This is a perfectly fine sword for paladin and warrior tanks. I wouldn't reforge the stats on it for anything else.

Had one of these beauties drop for me last night during the trash leading up to Cho'Gall. Our DK is Blood/UH and our other tank has the Maloriak mace, so there was no one else in the group that needed it. I have had rotten luck getting the tanking mace to drop off Maloriak, so this was a nice upgrade from my ZG weapon.

I reforged the hit into dodge and put a Windwalk enchant on it. It looks outstanding, and the extra bit of threat will help with tanking Maloriak adds, Halfus whelps, BoT/BWD trash, and heroics.

Eventually Maloriak has to cough up the mace, but in the meantime this will serve quite nicely. In fact, I will probably still use it for add-tanking and heroics.
