This crossbow can be droped from various hardmodes, . since so few guilds will reach agalon, blizzard distributed his weapon drops to hardmode loot tables.

How would you compare this to Gian't Bane for a Dwarf Survival Hunter?
Yeah, it has higher DPS, but lower top end as well as lacking the 1% crit obtained through Bane.
I'm thinking I want Bane, but what are your thoughts?

Today the 3.1.2 patch goes live. Hunter mates, good news from blizard (I quote the official post):

The developers believe hunter dps is too low, so today we are implementing a change to ranged weapon damage to improve dps across the board.

Bows, crossbows and guns of item level 226 or higher (which means weapons from Kel'Thuzad, Ulduar and the Furious Gladiator pieces) will do around 30 more dps. This should translate to a hunter damage increase of a few percent.

We don't think this will be quite sufficient in boosting hunter dps to where we think it needs to be and we have another buff that we plan to get in sometime over the next couple of weeks. We'll announce that change when it gets closer. (We have some plans for other classes as well, but we ask that you please keep this thread on the topic of hunters and the ranged weapon changes.)

As hunters may recall, we had an ambitious plan to change the way ammo worked for 3.1 that ended up being overly ambitious, causing us to scale back. However as part of that change, we stopped itemizing bullets and arrows. Since hunters could not upgrade from the ammo available at the launch of Lich King, their damage had started and would continue to fall behind as other classes upgraded their gear. This change basically incorporates the ammo damage into the weapons -- as you get better ranged weapons, it's as if you got better ammo to go along with them. This is likely to be a design we continue for the next few tiers of content until we have the opportunity to overhaul ammo completely.

That means that Skyforge Crossbow will reach the impressive dps of ~200! Cool uh?

What I dislike about most high level models for Crossbows in this game is their gigantic size.

Just because it's epic, it doesn't have to be some kind of a siege ballista with a shield rammed on top of it.

Or if it does, at least let us shoot proper-sized bolts then.

Is it possible the name of this item refers to a story from the Kalevala (Finnish epic)? I mean the part about the Skyforger, Ilmarinen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilmarinen). I have found some interesting similarities between Algalon/the Titans on one hand and the Skyforger/the Finnish gods on the other:

In both cases, the "creators" are very powerful beings (Ilmarinen is immortal), godlike even, that don't really create the world per se, but rather reshape it (the Titans do that with the whole planet while the Skyforger creates the *dun dun dun* sky).

An even more interesting fact is that in both cases these "creators", while still monitoring their work, never again directly manipulate it. The same is generally true with Finnish gods, who very rarely actually help mortals, prefering to just stand by and watch (actually, I can't remember any occasion of them helping other than when Lemminkäinen's mother asks for a tool to enable her gathering the pieces of her murdered son).

Listening to Amorphis - Skyforger in Ulduar is pure win :P

On the other hand, they could have just chosen the name because it sounds cool.

It could be debated that this is a downgrade/sidegrade from Siren's Cry for troll survival hunters because of the troll racial that gives +1% crit with bows.

The changes that Skyforge Crossbow gives over Siren's Cry are as follows (for trolls):

+2 Agi
+4 Stam
+4 AP
+23 Hit
+13.4 DPS

-43 Crit
-22 Haste

My best guess is that this Skyforge would be an upgrade for troll MM hunters, but a downgrade/sidegrade for SV hunters because survival's DPS depends less on base weapon damage and more on AP and crit.

Ok, I would like to start off saying that any of you hunters that are in guilds capable of getting to Thorim and doing him on hard mode should not be worrying about crit at all... Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I know myself, a BE Surv hunter, 25 man raid buffed, I have a bit over 46% crit, and during the fight with things like Master Tactician, and other buffs from the 24 other people in the raid, I have seen myself go over 55% crit. 1% crit SHOULD, by all means be nothing compared to the DPS bonus on this to ANY other weapon, regardless of the crit on your current ranged weapon.

this is the best ranged weapon in the game(at this point) for a hunter regardless....

Siren's Cry and Giant's Bane may provide better stats but that does not even come close to outweighing 13 dps on a weapon.

Point im trying to make here is that if u take Siren's Cry over this xbow u need to unsubscribe and play an Atari possibly river raid

Finally a crossbow that worthes something.Both in wow and in tbc the guns and bows rules.Finally a crossbow comes.As a draenie hunter i have a connection to crossbows(they were with me from the start).
And ofc,its amazing.200 dps is something you dont see every day.Hope new raids wont drops something to replace it so soon.

Probaby for the same reason why a hunter believes the RL should give Lotrafen, Spear of the Damned to him over a melee dps. True story.

Honestly, I have never seen a warrior roll or complain about not having priority on a ranged weapon, even if it was BiS, its still a secondary slot and just for stats. They can get it when the hunters in the raid have it or pass on it (for whatever reason). Yet, there is always a hunter around that QQs about giving a melee weapon to a melee dps first, because its better than what he has in his secondary slot.

I have this crossbow on my rogue, the "white" dps generated by it is useful and as many other wars/rogues will agree, its amazingly good for PvP to have good ranged weaps, 1 if you are slow, stun whatever you may still have the chance to avoid your target leave, run hide etc... So its good and 2 The dps generated isnt bad at all, I hit 400-700 with it and I dont complain.....

Still hunter weap over melee dpsers

As of right now all hunter weapons on the Ulduar PTR are currently showing the incorrect damages. It seems to be connected to this. https://www.bluetracker.gg/wow/topic/us-en/17223144543-improving-hunter-dps-through-ranged-weapons/
There is nothing in the 3.1.2 patch notes that actually show this but it was added and i believe blizzard didnt calculate this in when they increased the item levels.
