In terms of price per ore Thorium seems to be the most valuable, when you take into account the OL ores take 2 to smelt a bar and are heavily farmed by people with epic flyers. I've made more money selling the much less farmed thorium than adamantite.

What a moneymaker.

My realm Nazgrel opened to transfers a few months ago, and we're starting to see a flood of high-levels. (I checked the census numbers at Warcraft Realms, just to confirm my suspicions, and it does seem to be the case.)

So we've reached an intersection with players on their way up with their first characters, moving out of "Old World" and through the portal, and elites who can afford to buy rather than farm.

And it just so happens that thorium is best found in areas that are "unpopular" with players since they can hang out in Hellfire at 58, instead of the old 56-60 zones, like Burning Steppes, Winterspring, Eastern Plaguelands, etc. etc.

Players not populating these areas = players not farming these areas = thorium not farmed as consistently + still a demand for thorium = profit for you.

(If nothing else, two thorium bars are part of the quest requirements for That's Asking a Lot. https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=6026 If you don't get a full stack of thorium and don't feel like filling it out, smelt for two, put them up for auction, and see what happens.)

Cons: You're going to head to some podunk areas with teeth-gnashing travel times. These zones are also pretty spread out from one another.

Pros: You won't compete against many other players.

On a good day, I can make 40g with two stacks after a few hours of mining, easily. At this rate, a miner with some dedication can make enough for an epic mount without breaking a sweat.

Winterspring is the best place for Rich Thorium. Basically as Zedd said above if you do that pattern you can get easily 50 ore in less then an hour. And i figure out how to Jack prices up on AH. Basically wait till theres no Thorium left on AH and then put up a couple at 30g. And then people will put theres at like 29g and then put all of yours for like 28g.

I think In Silithus with the elites, in the caves is the best place as lvl 70 to farm Thorium :) Lots of Ooze Covered Rich Thorium Vein https://www.wowhead.com/cata/object=177388 inside :)

Just like some guys said if your 70 and want to mine thorium winterspring is the way to go, the elites in the south acts as a very good buffer for most of the server, just 70's can easily get thru it and mine. Very good spot i used to mine in EPL good spot too but proably over farmed

On a recent Thorium farming session in Wintersrpinds I got a very consistent number of ores (4 - 5) per Rich Thorium Vein.

This is an increase on what I previously remember Rich Thorium Veins previously dropping.

I found that EPL is the optimum zone for leveling mining from 275 to 300. The nodes are spaced in almost a perfect circle around the zone, the mob levels make you invisible at 70, and on a "full" server, I had zero competition. There is a nice blending of small thorium/rich thorium to keep your skill levels climbing.

Also, for you jewelcrafters out there, heres a lil breakdown of the prospecting potential of thorium.

After 200 ore prospected...
Most common gem: Blue Sapphire
2nd most common gem: Azerothian Diamond
3rd most common gem: Huge Emerald
4th most common gem: Large Opal
Least common gem: Arcane Crystal

You are more likely to get an Arcane Crystal from the actual vein than you are to prospect it.

I recently spent a while farming Thorium to help my GF level her JC so she could prospect for Huge Emeralds. I found that the best place out of all the ones mentioned above was Silithus.

Darkwhisper Gorge is a pain as the tunnels dismount you and the Plaguelands aren't too great either as the veins are mostly found on the edges of the map.

I farmed about 100 ore in an hour of riding around Silithus and I got a good few gems (mainly Huge Emeralds) while I was mining.

i know this might not help much but it progressed my mining skill up 30 points for 5 minutes work, i went on AH to see how much thorium ore was then checked it with the bars they were going for the same price so ofc i bought up all the ores on ah and made them into bars skilling up then selling them on for same price.

I may be wrong on this, but there seems to be slightly less nodes in Eastern Plaguelands in the Noxious Glade and Tyr's Hand because of the Ruins of the Scarlet Enclave.

Some have suggested Darkwhisper Gorge, but I do not. To traverse the gorge you need to go through tunnels that dismount you, wasting you time. I'm a paladin with crusader aura, so with all the dismounts I am really disadvantaged. I suggest somewhere that is more open to farm thorium ore, such as EPL or burning steppes.

To those Mages, Prot Pallies and whomever else can AoE grind, I know a great place that you can AoE grind and farm this. The area is much more favorable for leveling then it is for farming thorium, but it is great for doing both.

In the Western Plaguelands, you can AoE grind in Hearthglen on the level 55-57workers and there are 4-5 Rich Thorium veins throughout the area that you can mine on your downtime.

I would start at the Lumber Mill near the entrance to Hearthglen and AoE down all the workers in there. When I did this, there was an Elite that pathed up and down on the road right next to the Lumbermill, so beware of him.

After that, I would move to the mine just passed the tower, which had 3-4 Rich Thorium Vein spawns. You can AoE the fairly large group of mobs out front near all the wagons and inside the Blacksmith (This may need to be broken into two separate pulls if you're having trouble). After that you can go into the mine and AoE the Workers in there as well. 1-2 Rich Thorium spawn inside and 1-2 spawn outside on the rocks of the mine entrance and on the hill to the west of the entrance.

West of the mine is the Mardenholde Keep. On either side of the keep are Sentinels training, you can pull the small group on the northern side (These can also be pulled with the Blacksmith if you're feeling brave) and kill them and then pull the group on the southern side with the workers in the stables. I do not recommend going inside the keep as there are random elites that walk around. There is a Rich Thorium Vein which spawns behind Mardenholde Keep, so don't forget to check back there.

There is a Rich Thorium Vein behind the Town Hall, but I DO NOT recommend trying to AoE the Paladins inside as they heal themselves and there are only 3-4. Also there is a group near some large ballistas beside the Town Hall, don't pull them because there are sometimes priests that cast and the melee are paladins that heal. Also, avoid going inside any of the Houses, they usually have priests or mages.

After I've checked behind the Town Hall, I would head back to the Lumbermill and start again!

A couple of important notes here, make sure that you mount up before you make the pull and these mobs DO RUN AWAY IN FEAR, so if you don't have a way of stopping them, Avenger's Shield or Improved Blizzard for example, I don't recommend farming here.

Un'Goro Carter is the best place to farm Thorium ore.

The smaller veigns are located on the edge of the mountains around Un'Goro, The rich veigns are located more in the center and around fire plume ridge.

If you want to farm Thorium in Eastern Plaguelands... you better do it early in the morning or after most people went to bed. There are lots of possible spawns, but only few veins. If someone is also farming in Plaguelands, you can almost forget it. I skilled mining with 3 chars in the last months - with every char I almost spent ~1 hour for 5 skillpoints 245+
I also got chain dismounted when I farmed Thorium at lvl 65 in EPL.

I farm thorium in Dire Maul, as a previous poster had mentioned. I havent timed myself but I find that i get myself locked out, and each run yields 2-3 rich thorium veins, meaning 10-15 rich veins in an hour... its not the fastest method but it is stable, noone can mine all your veins out since they are instanced.
Basically run in the open instance portal that doesnt require a key, you will be up on a ledge with some small lashers down below... Jumping down will give you a ton of fall damage so if you can heal yourself it makes things easier, or if you are a warrior a well timed charge or intercept on one of the mobs below can save all of the fall damage.
Run straight down the path, past the corrupted tree and into the door at the end, run through this room and cross the pool with the Water Elemental boss (kill him on the way if u like to vendor blues, they can be worth up to 5g) to the door at the other end, up the ramp will be a Satyr boss who is easily killed, and who will release the corrupted tree once killed. Jump down off the balcony and run back through the door you first entered into out into the courtyard and talk to the tree, he will open the door at the other end of the courtyard.
Through the door run straight ahead and again you will have to jump down to the boss, if you can charge, jump straight down and charge the boss to avoid the damage, if not then land on the column first, and then jump down again to avoid dying. When you kill this boss be sure to pull him against the wall you jumped off of and behind one of the pillars, otherwise the plant adds in his room will aggro and cost you some time to kill. Travel through the tunnel that opens up to find your thorium.

The Garrison Armory in the northern part of the blasted lands has several thorium, mithril and gold veins - in 10-15 min, I had 12 thorium, 11 mithril and 3 gold.

Thorium Ore sells for huge amounts of gold these days, it sells for 3 times the price of saronite (75g+ a stack on my server) and is not heavily farmed like wotlk ores. A good way to make a lot of cash. Even better if you dropped a binding of the windseeker in MC and decide to farm a few arcane crystals instead of buying 100 off the AH.

Figured I would put in my results for Winterspring farming:

A relatively thorough circuit, going in the caves with ore and down through Darkwhisper Gorge, took me about 30 minutes and yielded 55 thorium ore, or about 110 ore per hour. This was with Crusader Aura, however.

This was during AM hours and probably with just me in the zone mining, so also relatively optimal conditions.

/agree with the previous post. I wandered into Silithus with my 80 warlock, in an attempt to find enough thorium to push my paladin's blacksmithing to fel iron (which everyone knows is very easy to mine even without an epic flyer). Well...guess what, Thorium comes from Silithus pretty much, there is that much thorium there.

Like the earlier post said, if the node is in a nest, it is either Rich Thorium (which also has a good chance of dropping azerothian diamonds, huge emeralds, etc.) and Truesilver (very useful and rare metal). Also, note that the minimum amount of ore these drop is like 4.

Now, what I did today was mine the northern area Hive Ashi, one small thorium node south of the city there, then the southern nests (Hive Regal). Note that I did not even go to the western "alliance" nest. Now, I have mined over 200 thorium ore, as well as a wealth of gems and arcane crystals with about maybe 30 mins of playtime. All I do is ride around the southern nest a bit, rid north, logoff. Do dishes, look at some notes, or level my alt. I log on maybe in about 45 mins, etc.

Also, even on large servers, the nests are so massive you can probably still nail a few nodes. Also keep in mind that since rich thorium nodes are so productive, you can end with with a stack+ of ore PER NEST you visit!

Anyways, have fun farming this, I like to make money, but I hate price gouging so I'm glad I found a remedy to this. Also note that this is technically easier to mine than mithril, since you can get such a massive amount of the ore in such a small area. Have fun, and I recommend doing this with a character that is about level 68+, so the aggro radius of the mobs are cut significantly, increasing time mining and decreasing time wasted teaching those silly bugs a lesson.

Have to say Silithus is the best. rich ooze covered nodes over the hives. Just run over each hive and find the nodes. Got 89 thorium, 3 truesilver and 3 mithril ore in 40 mins. not to mention ton of dense stone and minor jems along with a blue that dropped. Plus... there was another lvl 66 farming also!Great place since no one is there. pacific time 1030pm was when I went. Maybe I got lucky. (=

A good place to farm mithril and thorium is blasted lands,especially the alliance mine in the northeastern part of the region.Although there isnt an abundance of nods in the blasted lands,it mostly ally/ miner free so you will be able to farm your thorium with nothing around you.Just you,beautifull nature and nods.

if your still in your 40´s, ally, and you need thorium and cant make it through e. and w. plaguelands and definatly not the hives in silithus. i suggest burning steppes. the mobs are much more spread apart and several deposites have no mobs anywhere near them and a few even have friendlys nearby. it wont yield as much as silithus but at least its something with a minimal amount of corpse runs. most of the mobs can be outran on an epic mount, and it´s less likely to have more than 2 chasing you at one time.

I find Burning Steppes to be a really nice place to farm thorium. Just run full circuits around the mountainside and take a detour to Dreadmaul Rock inside the caves. A circuit can net you almost a full stack if you're lucky. You'll find some mithril as well, that should also sell nicely. And if you find a dark iron vein, mine it too even if you don't need it, because thorium can spawn in its stead.

There is now a veritable (*^&#-ton of Thorium in Un'goro. They must have changed something in 3.3, because.. it's just.. wow. So much easier leveling Mining now. Getting from 270-295 to advance to the Outlands stuff sucked. Now it happens naturally while leveling.

Since 3.3, both the refresh rate and number of thorium nodes (small and rich) in Un'goro Crater have been HUGELY increased. I've seen nodes with a respawn time of less that 10 seconds, as well as multiple nodes spawning right next to each other. While farming there, I've passed other miners coming from the opposite direction but still found plenty to mine due to the quick refresh. Seriously, there is no better place for farming thorium.

note: the node increase seems to have only been applied to the edges of the zone, not the volcano. so just run circles around the rim and watch your bags fill!

EDIT: This guide is less accurate now due to the changes of thorium spawning in Un'Goro. Walking around in the caves of Silithus is much more time-consuming then using ur 100% mount in Un'Goro. However, if Un'Goro is crowded by farmers, Silithus is a good second alternative.

Thorium, the radioactive metal Engineerers and Blacksmithers would pay a fortune to get their hands on.
Since most Tanks have blacksmithing as profession, which needs a lot of thorium for skills, makes this is an extraordinary item to farm.

At level 80 you could without problem mine 10 stacks of these/hour (+/-). You only need to know where to farm them.
I'm not a big fan of bugs & insects, but my experience tells me that Silithus is by the far best place to farm thorium ore, becuase of the fast spawn rate and the numbers of Rich veins. There are three areas you wanna visit in Silithus to quickly earn thorium ores.

Hive'Ashi - In the North
Hive'Zora - In the West
Hive'Regal - In the South-East

The thorium does not often spawn on the surface in these 3 areas, you'll have to go underground to find the real treasure.
Each area have 3 caves with big tunnel systems, in each cave you will find 1-2 Ooze Covered Rich Thorium Vein which will give you average 5xThorium Ore. So, with simple math you should get 30x Thorium Ores by only visiting all three areas + the ores you may find travelling between the areas. Of course, if there are more players farming them, you'll get less.

After mining from all areas, the ores in the first area you visited have respawned. This makes Silithus a non-stop thorium farming place, no matter if you are level 60 or level 80.
While farming, you will not only make money from the ores, but also from the rocks and gems that may drop.
Dense Stone
Arcane Crystal
Star Ruby
Azerothian Diamond
Blue Sapphire
Huge Emerald
Large Opal

Also, to make some extra money suggest getting Agent of Nozdormu or ask a friend who has it give you Proxy of Nozdormu, these items will make you able to loot these from the Hive-mobs which can be turned in for reputation with Brood of Nozdormu or sold to other players.
IF you don't have the item I recommend you to NOT waste your time looting any Hive-mobs, since they drop no kind of cash nor item worth selling. However, there's a low chance that they will drop Brann Bronzebeard's Lost Letter which gives Brann's Trusty Pick as reward.

Un'Goro has been very good to me since 3.3. One trip around the ring with my 71 paladin without visits to the hive, volcano, or ape tunnels took me about 20 minutes and yielded:

75 thorium ore
97 heavy stone
2 azerothian diamonds
1 star ruby
1 huge emerald
1 large opal

Un'Goro Crater seems to be be packed with Thorium nodes these days. Just run along the mountains and you're bound to find a crapload of nodes. I picked up about 60 pieces of Thorium Ore in about an hour of questing in Un'Goro. This was late at night though, but still, that's a lot of ore. Most nodes are Small Thorium veins, but there are a few Rich ones too.

I don't know what they did to Un'goro Crater. but just running around the perimeter of the zone, like farming in sholazar basin. I picked up about 18 stacks of thorium ore in roughly an hour or so.

I was astounded.

Edit: At the end for power-leveling BS; after 1.5 hours, and with a few people farming there as well. 23 stacks of Thorium, tons of Dense stone, and some random gems.

This is a great money-maker at the moment since people are leveling their alts etc. and buying this ore of the auction house instead of farming. And it's by far the easiest ore to farm. Just head out to the Un'goro crater and do 1 lap and you'll get approximately 40-80 Thorium Ore depending on your luck with Rich veins.

Then they usually sell for 30-60g per stack. That's 60-240g per lap, which takes roughly 15 min to complete.

The very BEST place to farm Thorium, is in Un'Goro Crater!

When you are in Un'Goro Crater, run around the outer edge by the mountains! The veins spawn often, and there are alot of them!

Seriously guys, if you are at lvl 50 or above, you can get around 200 per hour...

Farming this in Un'goro as of 3.3 is the purest form of win I have ever seen.
After 1st lap (which took me around 10 minutes) I have found these nodes:

For both Small Thorium and Rich Thorium veins, go to Ungoro Crater (level 48+ zone). Thorium O' Plenty. I found about 10-15 nodes along the mountains there that surround the Ungoro zone. Just do the loop around the zone and you can't help but run into them all. However, there can be a lot of people in the area mining as well during peak hours, but that goes for any type of ore I guess. Best place by far for Thorium though. Get to it.

It seems blizzard added a lot of new spawns in Un'Goro Crater. Just running around the edge will net you a lot of thorium, plus it seemed that half the veins I found were rich thorium.

Farming these in Un'Goro is exelent. Just run around in the edge of the crater.
I got 320 thorium ores in an hour. Together with it, i got:

418 Dense stones
9 Arcane Crystals
4 Azerothian Diamonds
3 Star Ruby
3 Blue Sapphire
3 Huge Emerald
3 Black Vitriol
1 Large Opal

With some tactics you can take out other farmers!

Are you sure it is a glitch, it could be a strategy from another miner. Snatch the ore, leave the stone to make other miners be frustrated. It was at least common sometime ago for miner to do this to try to scare other miners off.

Despite there being several good locations for mining extensive ammounts of thorium ore, my preferred one would still be Un'Goro Creater.

The fastest way to find nodes in Un'Goro is to simply do circular circunventions of the area. A full circunvention, starting and ending in Marshall's Refuge almost always yields 2 or 3 stacks of thorium ore, occasionally even more than that, plus several precious stones that can be sold in the AH.
That makes an average of 60 thorium ores per circunvention of the area, making it in my eyes a prime location for farming Thorium.

Quite honestly, I believe they upped the respawn rate on this. I did a lap in Un'goro and by the time I came back to where I started, there were 3 more nodes, and I had ~28 ore in my bag from the first circuit.

Definitely. Un'Goro is now THE place for Thorium - it's come down with a bad case of rampant nodes recently (presumably to give people a half-decent way of levelling BS in one lifetime). I'm using Gatherer, and it's reporting huge numbers of "new" nodes around the whole outside (by which I mean nodes I haven't seen before, and that aren't in the database I've downloaded either). Many of them are rich ones, especially in the southern half of the area. Very few are set back any distance from the crater floor, either, so almost all of them show up if you just run around the edge in a circle. Struggling into the awkward places such as the caves is just a waste of mining time, because there's another node waiting just a few more yards round the edge. I netted 160 ore in two quick circuits last night (almost exactly 80 per circuit).

Edit:
Added another 4 circuits this evening, making 6 in all.

Total:
448 thorium
596 dense stone
(plus small quantities of mithril and truesilver)

Also:
2 blue sapphire
7 star ruby
6 huge emerald
2 large opal
5 azerothian diamond
13 arcane crystal
2 black vitriol

My yield per circuit held up initially. I definitely had competition during the final two circuits, though, and my totals for each were about 20 down on the previous ones (roughly 60 per circuit as opposed to 80). Approximate time for a full circuit, 15 minutes (level 76 character on epic land mount) - so that's one thorium roughly every 12 seconds overall.

Did a test to see how much would drop with an hour of running the edge of Un'goro. Had about 4~5 others (that I saw) also running it so here are the results:

Came out to around 625 gold in one hour (not including the time cost of returning to city and posting items). Tempting to simply drop the Dense Stone as it has almost no value on my server (5 silver each) and would significantly increase the amount of time between city runs. Only problem with this run as a gold source is that with so much thorium hitting the market, prices will tend to fall significantly. Best soulution to this would probably be to do a run every other day and slowly leak it onto the market. While doing this run, I also grabed some of the Un'goro Soil between nodes as it usualy goes for about 1g a piece, stacks to 100, and drops in fairly large batches. Gave me an extra 50 gold bringing this to ~675 gold in one hour. Good luck!

Un'goro Crater is a insanely great place to farm thorium ore! One circuit gave me 5 stacks, yes, 5 stacks of thorium ore. The veins basically spawn almost instant, once I mined an rich thorium ore, started moving and a new vein popped on the minimap before I could get out of the scanners range. Just circuit around the edges, lots of thorium ore guaranteed if there is no competition.

I farmed for about 1 hour of Thorium in Un'goro Crater at about 3-4am server time since no one was online i got at least 200 ores easy. After that I lost the count but I would say that in a few minutes if no one else is in there you could make yourslef some decent gold in no time since this is probably the ore that is the highest lvl before Outlands (without counting Elementium Ore in BWL) and i recomend to all miners to NOT smelt the ores and simply sell them on the AH (if the ores worht more then bars of course) because JC need them to prospect. But if you will use the bars as a blacksmith (or enigeering) you should maybe get some few more for some extra gold in your pocket. ;)

Just as a heads up I just farmed 7 full stacks in under an hour at Un'Goro crater. Even with competition I was able to make full runs around with small and rich nodes respawning before I made an entire circuit.

1 Lap around un'goro got me 6-10 stacks of thorium ore (no1 farms it on my backwater server) and the gems sold in less than 10 minutes and i made triple the amount of gold i would have made from just thorium ore since it only goes for like 8g a stack of thorium.

i went to un'goro crater with a mining skill of 250, a gatherer glove (in case i found rich veins before 255) and 6 thorium ores in my bags. started at marshal refuge in a circle just near the edges of the area. next time i got to the starting point i had a skill of 277 and 82 thorium ores so i guess this makes un'goro the best place for thorium

1 trip around the WHOLE map = 272 Ore, 10 Arcane Crystall & 8 other Gem's and enough Dense Stone to make 71 Dense Grinding Stones

In my experience (which is extensive) the best place to farm thorium ore is Silithus, which I believe was stated above, due to the rate at which you will encounter a node AND the chance of that node being a rich one. I do not know if they have buffed the rate at which nodes spawn, spawn locations, etc., but in literally 1 hour I can have x12 stacks of thorium ore by running a route around Silithus. The downside: stacks on my server are going for 10g.

I was just updating a spreadsheet I have been using for various reasons with regards ores. I haven't updated for quite some time, I may be repeating something already mentioned but this ores prospecting contents appear to have changed.

Azure moonstone,Blood Garnet,Deep Peridot,Flame Spessarite, Golden Draenite, shadow draenite, Sky Sapphire used to have a 2% chance in prospecting

Blue Saphire has gone from 26% to 31% chance in prospecting.
Huge Emerald has gone from 26% to 30% chance
Large Opal 27% to 32%
Star Ruby down from 20% to 16%

These figures were all wowhead figures long before Cata but certainly valid during Wrath.

It may not mean much or have much use to anyone but anyone, the figures and contents have changed just in case you didn't notice ;)

A very good spot to farm this is just inside a cave in Swamp of Sorrows. At coords 66.7 , 74.3 - Stagalbog cave. The respawn rate is pretty fast.

After Cata came out, one of the best places for me is Ungoro Crater. The nodes are very, very common and close to each other, and between half and 2/3 are rich thorium veins.

as of patch 4.0.3 (cataclysm) , just go to un'goro and fly around the map in a circle, got 300 thorium ore in less than 30 minutes.

Also got dense stone and some green gems like star ruby , etc...

Stacks of Thorium bars are being sold on Alexstraza for 200g for 20 bars.............i'd rather spend the time mining it than the money buying it. That's just my personal opinion though.

I have came across a grinding spot for thorium ore and i found a nice spot that is not listed. in blasted lands all you have to do is fly around there and its all over but the best tip is that a little bit over in the tainted forest is the gold mine.... nothing but rich thorium ore is in that area, so if u fly around for a bit your time will be worth it rather than going over to the other side of the wow world. enjoy farming!

In my experience, I found that Swamp of Sorrows is a decent place for Thorium Ore. I was only farming it for about 20 minutes and go about 2 stacks. I also tried Blasted Lands and only found 2 veins and a LOT of mobs. Take into mind, I'm a level 52 holy priest running around looking for ore and there are a lot more higher leveled mobs in Blasted Lands than in Swamp of Sorrows. That's my take. Definitely a good substitution for having to travel to Kalimdor and go to Un Goro Crater.

definitely un'goro... as other have described, around the edge of the crater, one circuit netted me 70 ore. Worth the trip. I'm on a full server but I did my run at 2am.

30 mins in winterspring = 8 stacks
8 stacks = 160 ores....found around the same amount between small and rich veins
hit some of the caves while your there...worth the time!

I've found Winterspring to be a good place. Just going back and forth between the yeti cave at Ice Thistle Hill and the demon cave at Mazthoril. Saves a lot of running around lapping maps as each place has about 5/6 nodes in it per run. And that's not counting anything you come across in between the two.

I know it's been mentioned before but I would just like to confirm that Un'Goro Crater is definetely THE place to get Thorium Ore. The simplicity of the map means you just have to run round the full circle, staying close to the mountains that surround it. I also noticed insane amounts of Rich Thorium Vein, which is good because you'll get more in a quicker amount of time. With Master Riding, this will be an enjoyable cakewalk.

My spot is also Un'goro crater! i just got 13 stacks in about half an hour! and you don't even have to go searching for it! just go around in a circle and you're good.

40 minutes of farming on a 280% mount along the outskirts of Un'goro got me 260 Thorium Ore, about the same amount dense stones and quite many green gems!

As other posts have stated, Silithus is the best place to farm these. After cata hit, Hardly ANYBODY has a reason to go here anymore. That means this place is PACKED with mining nodes. During my trip here, I came across nearly every single rare spawn in the area. So get some greens out of your mining trip aswell :)

Ok so as I was reading this I was currently lvling up Jewelcrafting on a toon and needed some Huge Emeralds for the 10 skill points you basically cannot circumvent with another item.

Decided to go with Un Goro for the thorium needed to break into gems so I switched to my herber/miner Dk (why waste profession slots on gathering on real classes).

Timed myself for EXACTLY 30mins

These are the results:
3.5 trips around the outskirts following the mountain range

355 Thorium Ore (17 stacks with remainder of 15)
446 Dense Stone (22 stacks with remainder of 6)
4 Truesilver Ore
2 Mithril Ore
45 Mountain Silversage
24 Golden Sansam
13 Dreamfoil
3 Blindweed
8 Arcane Crystal

aside from these items and being that i cannot pass up killing a rare i also received 3 green gears and 3 Guardian Stones.

now if you take an avg of 3 main product from each node thats 148.66 nodes which comes out to 20 secs per node. this includes the time it took turn and hit random elites.

Getting really technical with this if you replace the 30 non thorium nodes with thorium instead that would add another 4.5 stacks to your total.
We will leave out the mobs encountered. No sense in getting too deep into it.

But, if you figure on druids not needing to dismount/mount that takes another 1.5sec off each node. Given the same amount of time with the same path and fly speed (310%) go ahead and add another 11 nodes or approx 33 ore.
Giving us a grand possible total of 478 Thorium Ore ( 23 stacks with remainder of 18)

@ 24 stacks of ore in 30mins flat why even bother with any other area considering the simplicity of Un Goro?

BTW on my server 24 stacks Thorium Ore = 1800g
3600g/hour not too shabby

Silithus was awesome.
It was not uncommon to see multiple Thorium nodes on the minimap.
Thorium and Truesilver were the only nodes I found.
I simply flew around the perimeter.
Nodes everywhere.

I didn't really give Un'Goro much of a chance after the first two nodes I found there were Mithril.

Can confirm Un'Goro is brilliant for this. At level 65, one lap around the crater takes my rogue just below 10 minutes of flying. Half an hour, doing 3 laps, in the middle of the day, gave me:

295 Thorium ore (14+ stacks)
15 Mithril ore

3 Huge Emeralds
3 Star Ruby
1 Large Opal
1 Black Vitriol
373 Dense Stone (18+ stacks)

And that's with the slowest flying mount. The ores spawn like crazy, sometimes one will spawn right next to where you just mined one.

Highly recommended.

Oh, and if you're going to spend some time farming here, you might want to pick up Toxic Tolerance, which eventually leads to you getting a Venomhide Ravasaur. Sure, it takes 20 days, but that's just another excuse to keep mining, right? ;)

Ran around Un'goro Crater, each lap netted me about 3 stacks worth of ore (60 bars.), so another 8 or so laps around the circuit should get you what you need for the thorium hump in BS.

This doesn't include the 15 minutes total I wasted trying to get nodes I couldn't reach on a ground mount :/ There's two or three. Irked me, more then anything.

I filtered through looking for any updates for Cataclysm to see if Un'goro was still the best place and I didn't see one. I figured since the area didnt change the drop rates wouldnt either.

10 minute pass mostly around the outside ring yielded

If you're looking for Thorium, stick to Silithus.

Thorium and Truesilver are the only nodes around, and most of them are Rich veins. Unlike previous expansions, there are dozens of nodes up at once, so seeing 3-4 on your map is common. On top of this, there is very little (if any) competition.

The Hives are no longer the only hot spots for nodes in the zone, so it's the same as any other zone these days.

Un'Goro Crater truly is the place for Thorium, both for leveling mining and farming the materials. This is what I got during 30 minutes time while going around the zone clockwise with fastest flying speed (310% + Crusader Aura). On Sunday morning 10AM server time:

6x Mithril Ore
4x Arcane Crystal
3x Black Vitriol

A caveat regarding the above comments:
The Shattering realigned the resources and difficulty of many zones, so any advice regarding farming spots may be obsolete. While Winterspring, Blasted Lands, and Silithus are still 55-60 zones (and thus are likely to contain Rich Thorium Veins), the Plaguelands are now 35-45 zones. The mining nodes in those zones are more likely to hold Mithril now.

I'll tell ya, one place that is great for mining Thorium is Mazthoril in Winterspring. On my last run, I got 3 rich veins, and 2 smalls. I also got a buncha good loot from the monsters in there. The respawn rate for the veins is great and there is hardly ever anyone around. I go there every thirty or so minutes to find, on average, 2 Rich veins, with the occasional small thrown in. Check it out sometime, it's totally worth it!

My two cents as well...

I flew around Un'Goro for 30 minutes and got around 200 ore, but there was some competition, so I tried Silithus for an hour. Here's what I got out of Silithus:

Truesilver Ore: 25
Blue Sapphire: 2
Star Ruby: 6
Arcane Crystal: 13
Azerothian Diamond: 5
Black Vitriol: 2
Huge Emerald: 2
Large Opal: 2
Dense Stone: Metric #$%^-ton (deleted, its worthless)

As other posters have noted, since Cata, Silithus is virtually empty, so its a great spot! I didn't bother going into any of the caves, around the perimeter only.

For a place close to 暴风城 I found that 诅咒之地 works well, especially Surwich and the rest of the area added in Cata. While the vanilla area of map has only 瑟银矿脉, the new area contains all 富瑟银矿. If you start in Surwich, by the time you make the full circle the 富瑟银矿 have respawned.

Granted, you can probably get more ore in Silithus or Winterspring, but if you are going about your business in SW, and want to pop out to farm the ore for a bit, you can just take the portal in the Mage Quarter and hearth back when you're finished. It's a lot quicker than spending all the time flying to more remote zones.

Boy, I'm scared to even add this comment because I like all you miners spending time in zones that seem totally depleted on high pop servers like mine. On my server, Un'Goro has been a joke as long as I can remember. Sometimes I'll take a quick loop around the zone and frown at the 5-10 nodes I find just to reassure myself that it does still suck.

Winterspring. No going in caves. No competition. Oftentimes a new node pops up on your minimap (if you calibrate like mine - max zoom out, then zoom+ twice) while you're mining. It's a very LARGE zone, too. Meaning that in one circuit 15+ stacks is rather ordinary, and by the time you finish the circuit there's a bunch more. The last time I ran 'numbers' on this zone (timing my farming) I ended up with about 20 stacks for a guildie and it took all of about 45 minutes.

I will admit, this is much easier with a flying mount, but I have done it on a level 58 DK with a normal mount and it wasn't so bad that I was willing to go stare at dinosaurs whilst failing to find ore.

Anyways, assuming you get the route/mountain-positioning right, I'm sure you'll be back to upvote after you give Winterspring a try ;)

ok i read the comments and tried ungoro, it was ok. then i wandered into silithus, and WITHOUT A DOUBT the best place for thorium. i just travelled along the mountains and hit it big. i stayed outta the hives, too much of a hassel. u need to lvl this one, go to silithus

I have found the most consistent source of Thorium to be Un'Goro Crater.

There are 2 or 3 veins to be found inside the cave with the apes (north end).

There are also 1 or 2 that can be found in the volcano area (center) including a rich thorium vein.

There are also a few in the surrounding mountains (try north end and west border). In the west there is also one in Terror Run.

Then there are usually 1 or 2 in the Slithering Scar (south center), some times silver or gold veins too.

There are a number of rock formations that run west to east just south of Tar Pits but north of the river, and there are usually 2-3 veins here too.

There is also a mithril vein on the east side by the waterfall in the Hot Springs area.

Heya guys. I got my mining up pretty quick today. By going to Un goro crater and going round and round and round in cirlces on the border. I've encounted about 50 thorium veins. Going round and round in circles.

Truesilver can spawn there and a few mithril depos^&*!. Also in the gorilla cave you might find about 3

and also the hive at the bottom of the map. Try that and see. :) There r times where they won't spawn but u're bound to find one. GL.

Is from Silithus. But not just anywhere. The three hives - Hive'Zora, Hive'Ashi, and Hive'Regal. As the mobs there are lv 60-odd elites, it is best to be lv 70 to avoid aggro. However, I just did 4 laps here gathering ore to level my blacksmithing, and came away with a whopping 240 ore. You get about 6 to 8 ooze covered rich thorium veins in each hive, plus all the small thorium veins you find along the mountains whilst travelling from hive to hive. Truly a great place.

If you're not lv 70... well, I'd suggest Un'goro. Nowhere near as much, but a lot lower lv, and there are quite a few veins in the hive there, around the border mountains, and at fire plume ridge.

The best place by far to farm thorium is in Eastern Plaguelands... There are 7 spots where rich thorium veins pop up frequently with minimal aggro (if you're clever). I usually come away with 3+ stacks or more within an hour of farming (if i have the place to myself)

Un'Goro isn't so bad with 3 main areas that pop up frequently. Best for lower lvls.

As for Silithus, it probably has the most areas for mining ooze-covered rich thorium veins, which is in the caves in the hive areas. The only problem is the damn elite bugs that dwell in them. If you're high enough lvl (68+ I'd guess), you can sneak around them about half of the time, stealthers would obviously have a much easier time of it. The elite bugs (lvls 58-60) are real cards... they spit on ya, stun ya, disarm ya, hav a load of hit points... they're generally !@#$%^&s. I usually only go to silithus as a last resort, say, if EPL and Un'Goro is being farmed like crazy.

Most folks tend to forget about Silithus.

I spent about 90 minutes doing three or four circuits of Un Goro this morning. Being a week day and about 10am there was no competition on my fairly average population server (Burning Blade, Horde side.) I got myself about three stacks of thorium ore that I sold on auction for 33g a pop. I've just gotten back from work and they've all sold.

This evening I tried EPLs and got myself about one vein, Burning Steppes and managed two Rich Veins and I'll give Winterspring a go tomorrow. All in all, Un Goro seems like your best bet for this very, very lucrative ore. Good luck!

Being that I could not easily find this information on thottbot, I found out myself in-game.

I found a good bit of small thorium veins in Silithus, with some in Un'goro as well. They required 250 mining (As usual, on-level with when you learn to smelt thorium) and also ooze-covered thorium veins inside the hives, which are also minable at 250.

The rich thorium veins, and the ooze-covered rich thorium veins, are not minable until 275 mining skill. Some are found in Silithus, many are found in Un'goro.

I've also noticed something else interesting, that may just be my imagination, but before BC came out, I was working on getting exalted with CC in Silithus, and meanwhile did quite a bit of mining there. I had the pattern of thorium spawns logged, and memorized. I noticed when I went back, that most of the thorium spawns that I did hit before BC, were gone, or at least were spawning much less often. Most of the thorium spawns in Silithus are now limited to inside of the hives, more specifically Hive'Ashi. Therefore, I suggest not trying to get those unless you're 70ish.

By far the best place I have found for Thorium Ore is the Garrison Armory in The Blasted Lands at 53,12. This is the cave just on the left from the entrance from the Swamp of Sorrows. (It also contains Mithril and Truesilver veins.)

Please note that this appears to be a Horde-only Mining location. The Armory is full of Nethergarde Miners, Foremen, and Engineers, who are all friendly to Alliance. However, judging from the Alliance players I have spoken to, the veins do not appear for them.

I Mined there. A lot. The Nethergarde folks drop tons of Mageweave, and the occasional green and Imperfect Draenethyst Fragment. One time someone dropped a Precisely Calibrated Boomstick, and another time someone else dropped the only Flawless Draenethyst Sphere I have even seen in the game.

When you get to be a higher level, such as 60, you can practically walk around and Mine whatever you want without aggroing the lvl 46-48 Nethergarde folks. If you happen to be a Protection Paladin with Mining, this is the perfect place for you to AoE grind.

The great thing about this Armory is that it's relatively small, so no aimless riding around, no surprise Elites, and the veins respawn fairly quickly. By the time I've reached the end of the Armory, I'll go back to the entrance and start again.

Ninety-five per cent of my Imperial Plate Thorium came from this place. The other location suggestions of EPL, Silithus, etc. are wonderful, but not when you're in your late 40s/early 50s, and trying to find Thorium Ore for the Imperial Plate recipes.

I feel very fortunate to have stumbled across this place. To my knowledge, there is no Alliance equivalent.

The three best zones for farming thorium are Winterspring, Burning Steppes, and Silithus.

In the Burning Steppes most of the thorium is located on the sides of the mountains that surround the zone (in other words, along the border of the map), and inside the caves of Dreadmaul Rock.

In Winterspring the best places to find thorium veins are Winterspring Village, the cave in Ice Thistle Hills, the cave of elite dragonkin south of Lake Kel'Theril, Frostwhisper Gorge (full of lvl 60 elites), and Darkwhisper Gorge (also filled with elites). In addition, you can almost always find a rich thorium vein in the Owl Thicket caves.

Silithus has many rich thorium veins, but they are mostly located inside the three elite silithid hives (Hive Ashi, Hive Zora, and Hive Regal). Several veins can also be found in the Swarming Pillar (more elites).

If you're lvl 60 or lower, it's best to avoid farming in Silithus altogether (unless you have one or two people who are willing to come along). Also, Darkwhisper Gorge, Frostwhisper Gorge, and the elite dragonkin cave in Winterspring are difficult (though not impossible) to navigate alone at these levels. The elite-filled areas are best for players lvl 65+.

Those players who are unable to farm in the elite areas can also find thorium veins in Un'Goro Crater (mostly on the side of the mountains surrounding the zone, on Fire Plume Ridge, inside the caves of the Slithering Scar, in Terror Run, and inside the Fungal Rock cave).

Thorium is tough to farm! If you're looking for Thorium Bars, just head to the blasted lands. This is a grab bag of high level mining rocks. You'll typically find Small Thorium Veins, Truesilver, Mithril, and Gold, scattered about here in large quantities. Check the mountains in the middle, then head to the Warlock and Ogre strongholds in the northwest.

However, if you're looking for Rich Thorium Veins, the best place I've found is Eastern Plaguelands. Check in the Scars around Light's Hope Chapel (75, 62), Corin's Crossing (56, 67), and sometimes around Tyr's Hand (84, 79). Avoid Stratholme and Terrordale, the risks aren't worth the ONE OCCASIONAL vein you'll find. You'll always find at least one or two veins in the scars. Just run back and forth around them. You' might also try the hills around Zul Mashar, but any further west and you're really just wasting time. Arcane Crystals seem to drop failry often here, I've also found a Huge Emerald on more than one occasion.

So in the end, if you just want some bars, try blasted lands, for the Rich veins and the rare jewels, stick with the Eastern Plaguelands!

I see a lot of talk about the BEST place for thorium. I have been mining for 2 years now and the best place to farm any ore is the place that no one has just been through and cleaned it out. The time of day you are farming is far more important than the area you have choosen. I have mined tons of ore out of all the places mentioned in the above posts but the most important thing is to try and schedule your mining times when the area is the least crowded. There is no secret area boiling over with mines waiting for you. Map out your route and start following it over and over at different times of the day and before long you will know the best times for mining on your server.

I sweeped Un'goro crater completely and mapped out the coords of every node I saw. the following are the approximate coordinates (+/- 1 or 2 coord pt.) of all the nodes i saw. There may be more, but this is good for leveling 250-300 b/c of all the thorium.

Rich Thorium Veins (req. 275 mining):
(50, 50)
(45, 52)

Small Thorum Veins (req 235 mining) :
(39, 15)
(70, 17) (inside the gorilla cave)
(45, 35)
(52, 32)
(55, 35)

Ooze Covered Thorium Veins: (located underground)
(48, 84)
(43, 81)
The cave entrance is at app. (50, 80) in The Slithering Scar. These are the equivalent of Small Thorium veins.

Mithril Veins:
(50, 71)
(37, 82)

Truesilver Veins:
(40, 77)

My suggestion to make this as efficient as possible is to downlad a map addon such as MetaMap and use any sort of point marking tracker display. Mark all these on your map, and then you can visit them in order from north to south and not waste time running back and forth around the map. I'm not sure about other mods, but for MetaMap it's <Ctrl>+click to set a mark.

guys, no point in getting so many coords; just download the "gatherer" addon then its database. It works really well,and I should never use any of these posts with numerous coordinates.

best places are definitely wintersprings, eastern plaguelands, and burning steppes

After going to every spot suggested on thottbott & other wow sites, by far the most consistent place for thorium is sithilis. Plenty of ooze covered veins in the hives. Only other mineral vein i saw there was 1 mithril vein.

i just tried every place. Burning Steppes, Un Goro, and Silithus.
if you have a higher level character, i would say 70 is safe, silithus is MUCH better. just hit up the 3 hives, peek in the holes, and each vein will have 4-6 thorium ore, really simple. Also, Silithus is EMPTY on my server. i even did /who and only i came up. If you don't have a character that high, I'd suggest Un goro next, but I didn't have a terrible time in Burning Steppes, so its up to you. Hope this helps somebody.

Dont listen to the others saying that places like Eastern Plaguelands and Un'goro crater are the best places to farm these ores, just cuz you dont have to dismount(as in order to go inside the hives in Silithus).

I've tried the crater and EPL and was the only one farming those at the time, anyway, the thing is that i was farming like half a day and only got about 70-80 ores, HALF A DAY? Geez!

Then i decided to jump to Silithus and try there, go against everyone who tells me its a bad place cuz of having to dismount and walk inside the caves, oh and have to kill tons of mobs, i have to say, thats just a load of crap, when it comes to the mobs you have to 2 or 1-shot those insects in tank specc/gear (which i was)and i had to kill them like 15% of the time else i'd just head pass them.

And yeah, the thing about having to dismount is true, still way worth it, its Rich nodes we're after here not those pesky Small ones.

The thing is to make good use of the routes you take, instead of going in a triangle between the hives you can go around the whole area, there is a chance you'll find a small node, and even a few truesilver ones (i choose to mine those cuz after a while there might be a thorium in its place).

Oh, and dont just go inside the caves, might waste your time doing that, i'd advice to make a survey, go around the crater of the hive, then go like an X to check the middle parts, by doing so you'll see if there is any inside the caves yet, else move on and try the next one.

By going like this i collected twice as much in just an evening (even more if i didnt choose to write this down, but i had all the thorium i needed anyways) as in EPL and Un'goro in half a day, still it all depends on if there is anyone else mining, and since everyone gives Silithus a bad reputation then it should be deserted.

wouldn't hurt either to check who is in the area,

for example before you head to silithus, just press 'o' and search for silithus in the 'who-tab', if you see like 5 lvl 80's chances are big they already cleaned the place out,

keep searching the areas the veins are in, when you see that the area is not crowded, thats the time to go and mine..

ps. I know you cant see members of the other faction, at least you know no one from your faction is there.

To add on about the Crater, (I'm a 73 Mage) I get 400 ore in 2 1/2 hours, deleteing the extra dense stones. Not to mention all the Gems too, that makes a killing in the AH. I go for the quick fast money! I do a stack of 10 for 13 gold and let the Vutures come! Silithus was the hot spot at one time but WOW made it easier since the expansion, and for the Mithril, I go to the Charred Vale and Iron ore, go to Arithi highlands, I got JC and BS on my new toons and helping out friends----were talking serious mining! Trust me Bros. !

Un'Goro Crater was for ,e. the best place to get the ore. In one pass in a BIG circle around the boundary I collected about 100 ore. Plus i got some really good gems too

FORGET SILITHUS! I went to Un'Goro and leveled from 256 to 300 mining Thorium. Run around the rim..there are veins everywhere, sometimes in groups of 2. Gems are good, too!

Best place is Un'goro Crater (i think that's how you spell it), as long as there is no more than two people farming there, you will be fine.

Maybe it is just my server, but I find Un'goro to be amazing for farming thorium ore. I would say I spent roughly 2 hours and got 223 ore starting from 230 mining. (+5 mining to gloves, highly recommend that you get this enchant, maybe some cheep gloves you never use or something.)

If you just scan the outer brim of Un'goro you will find a lot of nodes. Not sure if it is just my server or if it is like this on all servers. But, while farming on at least 3 different occasions I had thorium re-spawn right before my eyes the very second after I just mined the node. So yeah, very fast re-spawn rate in Un'goro.

Also while mining thorium, you seem to get quite a nice amount of miscellaneous green gems as well.

Blizzard created more veins in Ungoro. U can go around and get over 200 ore. theres a thorium vein every few inches. dont listen to what everyone said below, silithus is good but ungoro is much better

Un'goro is the ONLY place you need to go for thorium now! The respawn rate is crazy now for some reason. There could be 20 miners farming thorium there and you would still have no problem finding plenty. I just farmed over 300 in about a half an hour-45 min if that tells you anything. Idk why the respawn rate is so high now. It wasn't always like that, and the result is thorium is now almost worthless as far as selling it on th AH. However, for lvling your mining or for farming mats for a bs or jc, Un'goro is the place to go.

Hello guys,

The best place to farm thorium for mining and JC stuff is Ungoro crater by far .Having done one round i got 70 ores plus precious stones .I strongly recommend it to you because u follow a single route in an open area without getting confused in the caves of other areas like Silithus for example .

I don't know why people keep saying Silithus vs. Un'Goro Crater. Run a circuit of Un'Goro, then loop up into Silithus, do a circuit, and run back down into Un'Goro. Thorium all over.

many of the submitters tend to exaggerate.. It still boils down to Un�Goro Crater. One clockwise round yielded 86x thorium ore. Seriously, maybe its because I was so stoned, but it seemed like every 3/5 was a rich vein. Crazy, and very helpful for Jewelcrafters in the 200s ;-)

i just farmed thorium for (no joke) 30 mins in ungoro crater and got 162 ore. i did this with maybe 3-4 other farmers. so if u can get in there at like 3am or something just immagine.
each stack sells for maybe 20-30 gold depending on the server ur on. mine its about 25g a stack.
so if i did this for 1 hour i would have gotten about 16 stacks of thorium X 25 = about 400 gold per hour..not bad if u ask me

With the release of TBC and the addition of jewelcrafting, prices on ore have skyrocketed. I can run around in circles collecting these things and easily sell the ore for 20-30g a stack; dense stone sells for quite a bundle too, and any gems that drop just add to the profit. You don't even need to smelt the ore into bars- more profit if you don't (which is great for Dark Iron Ore).

For Horde players, Blasted Lands is the best place,but alliance players cant mine the veins inside the nethergard keep armory so dont go here if you need to lvl your mining as an alliance, try WPL or Un'goro instead.

Mining 瑟银矿石 from 瑟银矿脉 requires level 245 skill & 富瑟银矿 requires a level 275 skill.

Un'Goro Crater is the easiest place to farm 瑟银矿石 in both Classic and Retail.
Simply circle the edge of the crater (ignore the caves) and keep going in the same direction.
If you are using a ground mount, then the nodes will respawn before you return.
If you are using a flying mount (especially a fast one), then they may not have respawned.
It doesn't matter, just keep circling in the same direction and you'll catch up with the respawns.

安戈洛环形山 is the place to go.
The respawn rate is less it takes a fast ground mount to do a circuit, so you have unlimited Thorium nodes.
If you're in Retail and using a flying mount, then you do a circuit faster than the respan rate.
Flightmaster to Marshal's Refuge then pick a direction and keep going that way until you have all you want or your bags are full.
Vendor trash at Marshal's Refuge.
You will collect so much 厚重的石头 that you will consider it junk (5 厚重的石头 to 4 瑟银矿石)
Don't bother going into caves or trying to get that hard to reach node.
Also mine the other nodes as they may respan as Thorium.
If you can't mine 富瑟银矿, just keep mining the other nodes to get to that level.
Remember to have your bags as empty as possible before you go to 安戈洛环形山 as there's no bank or mailbox.
