Welcome to Wowhead's Stat Priority Guide for Shadow Priest DPS in Cataclysm Classic. This guide will provide a list of recommended stats to gear, enchant, and gem for, as well as how attributes impact your class performance in raids and dungeons. Lastly, this guide will give general advice on gearing your character in Cataclysm Classic.
Stat Priority for Shadow Priest DPS
Intellect and Spell Power
Spirit and Hit Rating
Haste Rating
Mastery Rating
Critical Strike Rating
Intellect is your most valuable stat at all times, but as a core stat you cannot Reforge into it or from it. Almost every piece of gear available to you will provide Intellect, and your weapon will give Spell Power. This is generally dictated by item level, meaning a higher item level piece will be the better piece in most scenarios, especially for weapons.
Spirit and Hit Rating are interchangable thanks to
. You only need enough to reach the Hit cap of 17%, anything past that is generally wasted. Remember to take into account things like

when figuring out how much you will actually need in a raid. You can use the improved character sheet to easily see your Hit chance against targets of different levels.
Once you are Hit capped, Haste Rating will be your best stat, at and around certain breakpoints. Our damage-over-time effects can now naturally deal Critical damage, which means we finally scale properly from Critical Rating too.
Mastery Rating is the newest stat, providing a unique bonus for each specialization. In our case, we gain

. This causes Mastery to increase the damage bonuses from
, a key component in our damage.
Attributes for Shadow Priest DPS
Strength
Strength offers no benefits to Shadow Priests and will generally never be found on gear we can wear.
Agility
Agility offers no benefits to Shadow Priests and will generally never be found on gear we can wear.
Stamina
Stamina does not directly help Shadow Priests deal damage, but it does help you stay alive. Having too little health means you will be at risk of dying to area damage effects in raid. More Stamina makes you less likely to die to spikes of damage, but you should not prioritize it over stats that directly add to your damage output.
Intellect
Intellect will be on all gear you equip, it generally is never something you aim for but instead something that just builds naturally. As of Cataclysm, Intellect will be the largest source of damage for Shadow Priests.
Spirit
Spirit provides Mana Regeneration, but for Shadow Priests you want to use it as a substitute for Hit Rating combined with
.
Secondary Stats for Shadow Priest DPS
Hit Rating
Hit Rating is an important stat for Shadow Priests that increases the chance for your spells to hit the enemy. It is absolutely essential that a Shadow Priests have at least 17% increased chance to hit so that you don't miss any spells. Because of how "strict" the Shadow Priest rotation can be, missing a DoT can throw all your timings off.
For a Level 85 Shadow Priest:
102.44 Hit Rating = 1% increased chance to hit.
You can increase your chance to hit by gaining Hit Rating or with Spirit combined with the
talent or by being a Draenei.
Haste Rating
In Cataclysm you will want to aim for certain breakpoints and stick around that percentage. Being between breakpoints generally means you are gaining less value from the stat, but you likely won't be better off Reforging it elsewhere. Keep in mind that you can get Haste % from a lot of sources, such as

Critical Strike Rating
After several expansions of varying degrees of Critical Rating value, it finally just works for us... Mostly. Our DoTs can Crit by default, and by picking Shadow you automatically get access to
, bringing your Critical Damage up to 200%.
These two factors together make Critical Strike Rating valuable to us, especially in pre-patch. The value is lowered a bit later down the line, when we add abilities like

to our rotation, but for now we can just enjoy it.
Mastery Rating
New in Cataclysm is Mastery Rating. In our case, our Mastery effect is

, which increases the bonuses provided by
. This isn't something we need to be conscious of, and with our Level 85 rotation is effectively just a large flat damage increase for most of our spells.
Gearing Advice for Shadow Priest DPS
The single most important gear slot for almost any classes damage output is their main hand weapon. Upgrades to your main hand weapon will have the most significant and noticable effect on your character's damage output. It is very important to try to get the most powerful main hand weapon you are able to.
We also have access to Reforging, which gives us plenty of opportunity to synchronize our stats with the various breakpoints that exist, meaning we can try to land as close to 17% Hit as possible, or right on top of Haste breakpoints.
Most of the armor slots blur together and you can analyze them piece by piece to compare their stats. In most cases you will choose one item over another because one item has
more
stats than the other, rather than choosing an item that has
particular
stats. You'll often get the right answer by just looking at item levels, outside of trinkets and the odd piece here and there. Reaching your Haste and Hit caps are generally the priority, with everything after those numbers being reforged or regeared away from.
