According to Tigole as soon as the Achievement counts the tabard you can delete it or sell it back to the vendor.

All Tabards you have obtained in the past and deleted can be re-obtained via the Tabard Vendor in WotLK.

It would appear that some tabards do not count towards this. In my bags atm:

Tabard of the Shattered Sun, Scout's Tabard, Guild Tabard, Aldor Tabard, Thrallmar Tabard, Sha'tar Tabard, Tabard of the Protector, Mag'har Tabard, Competitor's Tabard, and Cenarion Expedition Tabard.

That is 10, but it flags me as 9/10 on the achievement. Not sure which one doesn't count.

EDIT: I figured it out. The guild tabard is not soulbound. I had mine on my bank alt to free up bag space since I usually just wear the Shattered Sun tabard. Getting it back from my bank alt didn't flag me for it even though I had 10. I actually had to go and buy another guild tabard. Kind of lame, but oh well. It is only 90s.

I'm pretty sure that the Guild Tabard works, I currently only have 2 credited tabards on my 70 Hunter, so unless it's counting my Tabard of the Hand which I had dropped a long time ago, all I have is Tabard of the Shattered Sun and Guild Tabard, and my Achievements show I have 2/10 for this achievement.

So I'm almost posotive that Guild Tabard counts.

And as for the definition of 'unique', I think it only means, no two of the same tabard, even if you can have two of the same on your character, i.e. Guild Tabard.

The Trophy Trophy Tabards of the Illidari, obtained from the Crimson Watch quest line can be used to get two Tabards closer to this achievement, and the 25 version.

Complete the following quest, and it's follow-up https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=10793

You will then obtain one of two tabards from the reward chest.

Now, you can not redo the quest, and can never have both tabards at the same time. But once you have one it has counted towards this achievement, and the 25 version. Now delete the tabard you have, whether it green or purple. You can now visit a tabard vendor in any major city and they will have an option for you to collect from them either the green or purple tabard, simply ask them for the one you didn't get from the quest. Free point towards the achievement.

You can buy Stone Guard's Herald and Scout's Tabard, get them counted for this achievement, then vendor them back and get your marks back.

As of 3.2 you can NOT resell the tabards from the Argent Tourny back to their respected vendors.

This is not too hard to do, mostly requires grinding something though.. it does get a lot harder going form 10 to 25 tabards though. Anyway, I wrote a guide on all the game tabards you can currently get as well as how to get them, hope it helps:
