for 40 exalted factions you don't just get 90 achievement points
you get
-a myriad of tabards
-various patterns for diffrent professions
-all head enchants are purchasable
-various pets such as the sporegar sporewing pet
plus a great deal of other added bonuses.
if you are doing this for the achievement points then you should think about all the other benefits you stand to also gain from it as motivation.

It has been mentioned that it's possible that this could be done without Wrath. However, it's important to note that it's impossible to do without vanilla WoW factions (though that should be obvious from being the final reputation achievement).
I rolled a blood elf in BC, and after getting every BC faction, I went back and did some of the old factions for fun and other reasons (ie. I got exalted AD due to farming plenty of Strath, and pushed myself to exalted so I wouldn't have to pay for attunement to attend Naxx fun runs ^^). Even with AD, CC, Timbermaw, the 5 home factions, Frostwolf and Zandalar (soloing this rep without ZG clears is a pain in the arse) I'm set to be 39/40 assuming I get all 12 current Wrath reps, which I plan to do ASAP.
To put it simply: currently, between BC and Wrath there are 29 factions that you can get exalted with (including Silvermoon/Exodar, and only accounting for one of Scryer/Aldor). You'll need 11 of the factions that were introduced in vanilla WoW, which for a lot of people means getting factions that don't actually have any practical application.
Happy hunting! ^^

I'm curious, does this count work like tabards where you don't actually need the faction to be exalted, just have to have had it exalted at some point? i.e. for Scryer/Aldor and the new Sholazar factions, I'm wondering if it's possible to get credit for both, even if only one is currently exalted.

Q: Do you only need to have raised 40 reputations to Exalted at any time in your character's existence, or do they have to be concurrent?
A:
Concurrent.
You do not get credit for a reputation being at Exalted if it is not currently Exalted.
This is most easily witnessed in the Sholazar Basin factions: if you switch from Frenzyheart to Oracles (or vice versa) the achievement counter remains the same as it did before, but upon zoning or otherwise invoking a loading screen, the counter will drop by one.
Also, if you decide(d) to do the Hero of Shattrath feat, you will only receive credit towards this achievement for the faction you are at Exalted with, and not the other one.

is it only me who thinks this achievement should have a higher reward then a title alone?

anyone knows why alliance vanguard does not give a credit here? :-/
it is silly or bugged IMO, becouse there is an achievement
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/achievement=1012
which requires exalted with alliance vanguard, and its really stupid if there is an exception like that.

If you are just starting out on this achievement and are wanting a boost of confidence I would go raise your
Tranquillien
rep. It is very easy and quick to level up. I think one of the last quests rewards you 8000 rep and before that most yield 1000 rep or more.

If you're an 80 Horde, chances are you have reveredish with all of the city factions. Just grind those up to exalted, and, if you haven't, do most of the Ghostlands quests for the easiest faction in the game (Tranquillen) and you have 6 reps under your belt already.

Wahahahahaaa! Yay me! I just did the Achievment yesterday! ^_^ Started gathering rep on a character that was supposed to gather money, pots, and other reagants, but it turned out that it became my main, and now I'm one of the not-SO-many who have the achievment. I was gathering rep since 1.1.2 patch, so you don't have to be THAT surprised.. :). Good luck by the way!

Just got this achievement and title.
One of the few "rare" titles that really make people do doubletakes I am happy to say. Hope it stays that way for months/years to come.

The easiest reputations to gain exalted with for the Horde (dungeon grinding, daily grinding, mob grinding, turn-in, and Frostwolf Clan), un-exaltable reputations omitted:
1.Darkspear Trolls
2.Orgrimmar
3.Thunder Bluff
4.Undercity
5.Silvermoon
6.Frostwolf Clan
7.Booty Bay (You may want to get your Bloodsail Buccaneers to Honored first)
8.Everlook (You may want to get your Bloodsail Buccaneers to Honored first)
9.Gadgetzan (You may want to get your Bloodsail Buccaneers to Honored first)
10.Ratchet (You may want to get your Bloodsail Buccaneers to Honored first)
11.Cenarion Expedition
12.Mag'har
13.Ogri'la
14.Netherwing
15.Sporeggar
16.The Consortium
17.Thrallmar
18.Lower City
19.Sha'tari Skyguard
20.Shattered Sun Offensive
21.The Scryers/ The Aldor (not both)
22.The Sha'tar
23.Argent Crusade
24.Frenzyheart Tribe (preferably this before the oracles)
25.Horde Expedition
26.The Kalu'ak
27.Knights of the Ebon Blade
28.The Oracles
29.The Sons of Hodir
30.Warsong Offensive
31.The Wyrmrest Accord
32.Kirin Tor
33.The Sunreavers
34.Cenarion Circle
35.Argent Dawn
36.Keepers of Time
37.Timbermaw Hold
38.Tranquillien
Harder reputations to obtain (Raiding, Certain insane in the membrane reputations or shattrath, and the other 2 Battleground reputations)
Defilers
Warsong Outriders
Aldor/Scryers (Both to exalted at one point)
Ashtongue Deathsworn
Brood of Nozdormu
Hydraxian Waterlords
Scale of the Sands
Zandalar Tribe
Darkmoon Faire
Ravenholdt
Shen'Dralar
Thorium Brotherhood
The Violet Eye
Until Blizzard removes requiring to be in a raid group to enter a raid instance, I think Zandalar Tribe and The Violet Eye will remain on the hard list. Otherwise, you can pretty much solo them.
This is more of a guide for my own personal reference, but why not share it?

I am currently at 30. And here are some tips I have picked up over the course of my grinding. They are mostly focusing on making the out of gold, or getting extra stuff while rep grinding
BURNING CRUSADE:
Save most of your Consortium rep grind for after you have the Burning Crusader achievement because:
While grinding the BC reps for
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/achievement=764
, make sure to check in Shat everyday with
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/npc=24370
for the daily random dungeon. Completing this quest grants you an extra 250 rep and an
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=29460#reward-from-q
. They key can be used to open a prison which will either have a mob who drops a green (for DE) and an item that can be turned in for extra rep OR you will rescue a CE, HH/Thrall, Aldor/Sryer, prisoner for the appropriate rep with that faction.
Zandalar Tribe
I have gotten well into Revered just running ZG's 2 mount bosses every week for the past few months, and doing the 1 time head quest. Make sure you loot the Tier pieces for your respective class if they drop from the boss. Even if the gear is worthless, the quest is worth bonus rep. (WoWhead lists it at 150 rep, but I am pretty sure it was 500--I could be mistaken though). Obviously, I destroy the bijous and turn in coins. I also kill all the raptors around for skins, extra rep, and a chance to drop
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=48126
. I kept the first for myself and sold the second for 2k! Each boss also drops a
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=22637#objective-of
which is worth 250 rep when paired with
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=19816#contained-in-object
(if it is the apropriate class). I find it worth looting any jinxed piles that are in the raptor area, since I am clearing that anyway.
The Ambassador & The Silver Covenant/Sunreavers
Probably anyone who has gotten far with the achievement knows this already, but for those who are just starting out and looking for a goal: grinding rep with the Silver Cov/Sunreavers will also raise your rep with the home cities. Just choose to champion the city you are looking to raise rep with, and you get rep with both.
The Ambassador & Holiday Events
Honoring Elders raises your rep with all Faction Cities! Completing the Vanilla WoW orphan quests will as well, however the ammount from those quests is small.
The outland orphan quests provide a small amount of lower city rep.
The Argent Dawn & Rivendare's Deathcharger
Farming for the Deathecharger is generally a more effective way, and with a larger potential reward
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=13335#dropped-by
, than questing. (I finally got mine last weekend--a full month after exalted :P) Remember that every time you save the the Argent Dawn lady you get an extra 250 rep.
Wintersabers & Timbermaw (Alliance Only)
Hold off on Timbermaw rep grinding till you are at least friendly with the Wintersabers. Getting to friendly with the Wintersabers unlocks
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=5201
. Killing these guys will grant you both Timbermaw rep, and the quest turn ins grant Wintersaber rep. Remember to hold your beads and all Timbermaw quests till AFTER you are Revered.
Ogri'la & The Skygard
While doing dailies for Ogri'la and the Skygard, you are most likely going to wind up with an abundance of
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=32569
. They stack to 250. When I get 250, I usually go place 35 at each of the eggs of the dragons. (Like
https://www.wowhead.com/cata/object=185936
). If you slay all 4 dragons (150 shards), you can make a level 70 blue cloak of thier scales. This cloak can be disenchanted or sold on the AH. It doesnt sell for much anymore, of course, but it is still effectively free gold. Also, each drake drops a green item (good for DE) and a chance to drop a crafting pattern, which sell for quite a bit on the AH to collectors. There is also a very good chance you will get a "depleted" item, which can be combined with more of your extra shards and turned into a level 70 Blue or Purple and sold on the AH.

40 exalted reputations
Look up separate Guides for Each Of these I'm just suggesting which ones to get because these ones seemed easier
Lich King Heroics
1. Argent Crusade
2. Kirin Tor
3. Knights of the Ebon Blade
4. The Sons of Hodir
5. The Wymrest Accord
All from turning in large amounts of triumphs from random heroics(fastest way to get exalted)
Daily Quests
6. Kaluak
-Daily Quests and easily achievable
7. Ogirila
8. Skygaurd
Ogirila and Skygaurd are both achieved by doing Daily Quests in Blades Edge
9. The shattered Sun Offensive
Isle Of Quel Danas (self explained)
10. Netherwing
Can be farmed for eggs or Daily Quests (I Prefer Daily Quests)
11. Frenzyheart Tribe/Oracles
Daily Quests in Sholazar Basin
Notherend Heroics
12. Explorers' League
13. The Frost-born
14. The Silver Covenant
15. Valiance expedition
-All easily achieved by doing heroics without a tabard
Burning Crusade Dungeons
16. The sha'tar
17. Lower City
18. Keepers of Time
19. Honor Hold
20. Cenarion Expedition
You can get these 5 by doing the corresponding heroics in the burning crusade just be asking for a group of people to clear all these heroics in trade
Some give rep on regular but with 5 80s your going to be clearing the whole instance in less than 10-15 minuets if your fast
Some Give up to 8k rep a day when you do all the heroics on a human not much less on other races
-I got a group every time within 20 minuets (if not give up and try later)
Shatt
21. Scryers/Aldor
I prefer Scryers because i bought every single quest item i needed to get exalted for something like 750 to 1200 gold altogether (not allot considering its like 36,000 reputation i got
Raids
22. The Violet Eye
Run kara for 8.5k reputation a single run it doesn't take long to get exalted
23. The scale of sands
Run Mount Hyjal for 8-9k Rep a single run

Look in your bank for when you stored that first some of you got(the one that you thought did nothing) you need it now so start running strathholm and getting those seals or something
24. Cenarion Circle
SIlithus Farming
25. Timbermaw Hold
Just go to the very top of Felwood and kill those dudes below the final perch on the right hand side of the map (below the quest gives for feathers) turn them in at the quest giver
26. Zandalar Tribe
Farm for Bijous and Coins in Zul'gurub
Or buy then at the auction house because your only going to get like 2,000 rep for a full run and a single Bijou gives 75 rep
27. Stormpike Guard
Run av....allot
28. Kureni
Kill the ogres in nagrand Keep the Beads that drop
29. Use the beads that drop for Consortium Reputation
30. Sporgar
Farm the Hibiscus in Underbog( the flowers on the ground as you pass though on normal difficulty)
Alliance Or Hord
Get exalted with All the Hord or alliance Cities because its easy
Buy lots of runecloth and turn it in for 75 a stack
31. <Insert City Name Here>
32. <Insert City Name Here>
33. <Insert City Name Here>
34. <Insert City Name Here>
35. <Insert City Name Here>
Goblin Cities
36. Everlook
37. Rachet
38. Gadgetzan
39. Booty Bay
Achieve all of these buy killing pirates near there cities or doing the quest Free Knot in dire maul north
I know its going to seem like Progress is slow but when you think about a quest for 250 reputation is really 1400 reputation which is big
40. Ashen Verdict or something idk i hate raiding >.>
I got Ashtoung Deathsworn because i like burning crusade content more

I just finished the grind to 40 Exalted factions this wednesday -
http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Outland&cn=Isthara
(Armory Link)
Its not as tough as everyone really thinks, i spent +/- 8 months on it, casually doing factions one by one. The "tough" part is around 20 exalteds, where you are halfway there, completed all the other reputation achievements that gives you titles (Guardian of Cenarius, etc). I skipped factions like Ogri'la and Oracles/Frenzyheart just because i absolutely hate dailies (could barely stand doing Netherwing and Kalu'ak).
A could tip would be to bring a friend for many of the factions, like Sha'tari Skyguard and factions included in "The Diplomat" achievement. When doing the "The Burning Crusader" factions, like Honor Hold, Shatar, Cenarion Expedition, Lower City and Keepers of Time, dont solo grind these, it WILL be a pain in the ass, and take very, @#$%ing long. Instead, try to spam the trade chat a bit where you look for other to do it with. I think i managed to get +/- 10k Rep an hour with Shatar, with 4 others by just speed running Botanica normal (Note: You DO get reputation from level 67+ dungeons after revered in normal mode. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THEM IN HEROIC!).
Another funny thing to remember is that you dont have to run heroic Auchenai Crypts of whatever it is to get reputation with The Consortium, you dont even have to kill mobs in Nagrand. All you got to do is buy a *!@#load of "Ethereum Prison Key"'s from the AH (if possible - i got all i needed for less than 300G. And i was still on Neutral ;). (Note: You have to complete a short quest chain to be able to turn them in).
Last note. Do Karazhan, Black Temple, Mount Hyjal and AQ 40 on a weekly basis. Karazhan wont take more than 4 resets if you do the quests, Black Temple is 6-8 resets, same goes for Mount Hyjal, and AQ 40 (Brood of Nozdormu) is not even close to hard, even though it looks dire when you first meet them (0/36000 Hated).
Hope you have a nice grind towards The Exalted lads! The title is really good-looking, and here on Outland-EU, its even rarer than The Insane!
(Oh, and by the way - I even did Hero of Shattrath for the sake of the achievement, no reward what so ever there ;) (Just a bloody rare achievement)

If you're sill going for this
, then just keep your head down and listen to some tunes whil you do it because it can be a lengthy grind.
* Obviously your faction's cities is a good start.
* Maxing out all the Northrend wotk factions is almost a must unless you want to do some of the older raid content, or have them already.
*
Make progress and don't try to burn yourself out or tackle huge gains. Complete all that isn't yet maxed exalted, and then start to see some gains. Its a faster reward and will help you for the hardest grinds.
*
Assuming you have already completed the wotlk, vanilla faction cities and other random encountered factions, the next thing will be to take a look at the serious potential that Steamwheedle has. They have 5 reps there, and they're all fairly easy to max. My advice is to forget about the DM runs though. They're annoying and very fast for some, which means you get locked out for the hour and never see more than 1-2 keys. Just read up about their faction and start grinding.
*
Most pre-wotlk raid content is easy to 1-2 man now, so start thinking about your rep gains inside places like 10man Karazhan. Everything up to the chess event can now be easily solo'ed or 2 manned.
ZG is another place that is fairly easy to gain rep if you do full clears or at least a couple of bosses if not more.
Another level 70 raid that is easy to clear is Mount Hyjal. In about 6-7 clears you will be exalted there also, but.. its not very easy to solo or 2-3 people. Its best done with 5+ 80s. 4 minimum for easier clears.
*
After reading this just go and check all your reps. You don't want too much vanilla raiding stuff, so check out the BC content and factions as well as any wotlk factions not completed yet. Get off this page and start sorting it out!
You can do this over a short course of time. Just get out there and know what to start with and where to finish
.
