This section of the Affliction Warlock guide explains the best possible choices for the Netherlight Crucible, important traits and relic bonuses, and how to progress through the Affliction Warlock artifact weapon Ulthalesh. This guide was originally written by

Artifacts in Battle for Azeroth
As of June 26th, completing the quest
The Power in Our Hands
will further empower your Artifact Weapon, enabling all traits and at least
Concordance of the Legionfall
level 75, further increasing in power over time until the Battle for Azeroth pre-expansion patch.
Therefore, only the Netherlight Crucible recommendations are relevant on this guide page leading up to BFA, as you already receive all Artifact Traits by default. This makes content easier to complete, especially some
content going away
such as
Ahead of the Curve
and
Mage Tower Challenges
.
In the
BFA pre-patch
, your Artifact Traits will be removed, and relics will simply increase the item level of your artifact weapon. However, many artifact traits are returning as talents or azerite powers in Battle for Azeroth and we have a compiled a
full list you can read here
.
Moving forward in Battle for Azeroth, you will still be able to acquire the Artifact Weapon which will mainly interest transmog collectors for the appearances. Learn how to unlock all appearances in BFA with our
Artifact Appearance Guide

Netherlight Crucible
The
Netherlight Crucible
is a new addition in patch 7.3 which allows you to empower your relics with new additional traits. This provides interesting opportunities to turn a mediocre relic into a best in slot relic. Read below to determine how to find the best trait combination on your current, and new relics.
In the crucible, you will find 3 tiers of traits for each relic. The first tier unlocked adds 5 item levels to your weapon for each relic, adding to a total of 15 item levels. The second tier is a choice between a shadow or light power, and the third tier is a choice of three randomly generated artifact traits. You can only choose one trait in each tier, and your choice in tier 2 will remove the choice of one of the tier 3 options. In order to completely unlock the Netherlight Crucible, you will need to get one of your artifact weapons to level 75.
For the Affliction Warlock Artifact, your ideal relic will be one of
Perdition
,
Shadowy Incantations
, or
Winnowing
as the base trait, with one of the other two as the tier 3 trait. The Tier 2 trait connecting them should ideally be
Light Speed
or
Master of Shadows
, with
Shocklight
and
Murderous Intent
not far behind. Side note - there will be small differences in your character's trait values based on your personal stats. For instance, if you have more crit than the base sim, your value for
Perdition
will be slightly higher. With the opening of
Antorus, the Burning Throne
, it is now possible to obtain
Insignia of the Grand Army
, which increases the potency of your Tier 2 Crucible traits by 50%. It might be a really strong legendary if you are lucky with Netherlight Crucible rolls!

Netherlight Crucible Example
Below is an example of how you would put these ilevel values into practice in the Crucible itself. In this relic's case, since there is a completely useless relic trait in the middle of the third tier, you'll either be choosing the first path, or the fourth path. Simply add up the values in each of the four paths, and you'll find that the fourth path's values add up to a higher total ilevel value, so that's the best case for this relic.
Note: The Values for tier 2 traits below are pre-nerf values, however the concept remains exactly the same. Add up the values of the different traits on each of the four paths, and take the path that gives you the highest ilevel gain.
Artifact Weapon:
Ulthalesh
Active Ability
First of all you gain
Reap Souls
when you acquire your Affliction Warlock Artifact weapon. This gives you a button that will increase your damage by 10% and will double the effects of all artifact abilities. Abilities that have a % chance to proc will gain double the proc rate instead of doubling the effect they deal on a proc (example:
Fatal Echoes
). Reap's duration is increased based on the number of Tormented Souls consumed by the use, 5 seconds for each soul.

: Your
Corruption

Recommended Build
Recommended Empowered Build
After you
empower your weapon
(requires unlocking the Broken Shore, reaching AK 26, and completing a short questline):
After this you have to finish filling out all 3/4 traits to 4/4 before you can start opening up
Concordance of the Legionfall
. Its advised to do the following order:
Perdition
Shadowy Incantations
Inherently Unstable
Inimitable Agony
Hideous Corruption
After this, just fill it out the rest of the way, some note to
Seeds of Doom
to help make mythic + slightly less painful... Once all your points are filled, you will be able to start leveling up
Concordance of the Legionfall
ever so slowly. A full picture of this is listed below:
Relic choices
Your weapon can equip up to 3 relics if you unlocked your 3rd relic slot in your
Warlock
campaign. You have 2x shadow and 1x blood relic slot. As far as ranking, they are all relatively close, but this is a ranking for equivalent relics with item level consideration. The +# ilvl is how many item levels the relics need to be to be equivalent to higher ranked relics.
