If you look closely, the tag that normally says <'s Companion> instead says <'aka>. She loved you all along.

Edit: Osso is right, it looks like this is no longer the case since the 5.04 patch. She's now just <'s Companion> like any other pet. I've submitted a bug report and you should too.

This raptor companion is available upon defeating Bloodlord Mandokir in the level 85 five-man heroic Zul'gurub dungeon. Players who have completed the lower level lashtail hatchling quest chain will find a captured lashtail hatchling in the zone, which they can save and conclude this raptor's storyline.

I just defeated Bloodlord Mandokir in Heroic ZG and noticed this little guy tied up between 2 poles with an exclamation point over his head. He was so happy I rescued him that he joined my menagerie.

Just in case anyone got confused with this as horde (as I certainly did), once you finish up the quests from Far Seer Mok'thardin, you have to take your raptor to the Bal'lal Ruins north of Grom'gol to get the next quest in the chain. Once there, it'll pick up a skull and offer a quest. You can continue the line from there.

The Lashtail Hatchling seems to be slightly larger than other raptor hatchling companions. I had this guy out and noticed another raptor nearby that was noticeably smaller when side-by-side. I hadn't used any of those pet biscuits to increase the size.

Have i done something wrong here? i can not pick up the bad medicine quest line from The rebel camp. there is just fighting going on there. i did the Bwemba questline and all. I dont remember if i have done the low level quests or not, it has been a long time since i was here. Any ideas?

I cant see the lil raptor in ZG after killing the raptor boss. I did the quest chain up to the one where they take my egg fragment away. I went to the Bal'lal ruins and the raptor appeared out of nowhere...Plz help! Am i missing another quest chain?

Here's the full way of getting it as Horde:

First, you cannot be on the long Bwemba spirit chain, as this will phase almost the entire STV and leave you unable to do the pet pre-quests. Complete it or abandon it. Note that after completing it, you need to log out and back in, in order to get out of the phase.

1) The Defense of Grom'gol: Raptor Risk from Commander Aggro'gosh at Grom'gol in North STV
2) When you've killed 12 eggs, A Lashtail Hatchling will auto-appear for you (the box in the right side of the screen) and a little raptor will appear along you. Go to Grom'gol and hand in the quest.
3) I Think She's Hungry
4) After doing this, you get no direct follow-up. Go to the Bal'lal ruins a bit north-northwest of Grom'gol and go near a pile of skulls in the troll ruins, along with your baby raptor. A new quest will auto-appear for you: Favored Skull. Complete this quest.
5) Accept A Nose for This Sort of Thing from the nearby Bubbling Cauldron
6) Who's a Big Troll?
7) Skullsplitter Mojo
8) Bloodlord Mandokir
9) Priestess Hu'rala at Bambala to the far east, near the ZG entrance. A new chain opens up.
10) Mind Vision
11) See Raptor
12) Mind Control
13) Be Raptor where you're a little raptor inside ZG and must escape. Fun quest.
14) Surkhan. The quest chain ends here.
15) Now enter the new ZG troll heroic dungeon (with a group, you can't solo this). At Bloodlord Mandokir, the raptor boss, a little baby raptor will be tied up in chains. You must engage and defeat the boss. After defeating him, the little raptor will have a quest for you - An Old Friend, which you simply complete without doing anything, rewarding you your Lashtail Hatchling :)

I got my Lashtail Hatchling back today! After several months he was indeed waiting for me chained up by that meanie Bloodlord Mandokir in the new heroic Zul'Gurub. He's in the back, right across from where you enter the arena, and hard to see cuz he's so small. If you look on your minimap after downing the boss, you'll see the exclamation mark for the quest to recover An Old Friend. :)

How to obtain the Lashtail Hatchling companion as Horde

To see the Lashtail Hatchling inside the Zul'Gurub instance after killing Bloodlord Mandokir you must first complete a series of small quest lines in Northern Stranglethorn.

*SPOILERS Start at step 7 for Horde - You can stop right before those steps if you want to see the main meat of the story unfold yourself*

As a member of the Horde this entire ordeal starts with The Defense of Grom'gol: Raptor Risk given by Commander Aggro'gosh in Grom'gol.
After completing that quest, you will automatically receive the quest A Lashtail Hatchling and the Lashtail Raptor Egg Fragment.
Return with the hatchling to Far Seer Mok'thardin in Grom'gol (If your bags were full check your Mail for the Egg Fragment).
Next he will send you on a quest called I Think She's Hungry to feed the baby raptor murloc meat. Make sure your raptor is summoned so she can take bites out of the corpses as you kill them.
Now take the hatchling to the Bal'lal Ruins @ 33.7, 37.2 where you will find a pile of skulls on the ground, Your hatchling will run up to the pile and grab a skull from it. Now he will give you the quest Favored Skull which needs you to return to Nimboya in Grom'gol.
The cauldron near Nimboya will now offer the quest A Nose for This Sort of Thing.
Next you get the quest Who's a Big Troll? then Skullsplitter Mojo
After completing the above quest line, Bloodlord Mandokir will spawn and offer a "quest" of the same name. He really just wants to steal the raptor from you because it's special. Do not chase him when he runs off. There is more to do, you must now embark on a chain to try and save your new raptor friend from her fate.
Nimboya will now give you a quest to speak to Priestess Hu'rala.
She will lead you on a chain to try and save your new raptor hatchling friend from her terrible fate of becoming the Bloodlord's new raptor slave. This is all your fault! But maybe you can do something about it...
1) Mind Vision, 2) See Raptor, 3) Mind Control, 4) Be Raptor, 5) Surkhan
After that really cool and fun quest chain from the Priestess you are ready to enter the 85 Heroic Dungeon of Zul'Gurub and face the Bloodlord Mandokir. It's time to undo the mistake you made by bringing him back to life, and you must save your new friend from a world of torture and evil. Once the Bloodlord falls at your hands, you will see An Old Friend.

How to obtain the Lashtail Hatchling companion as Alliance (Credit to user: Madwolf)

*SPOILERS Start at step 8 for Alliance - You can stop right before those steps if you want to see the main meat of the story unfold yourself*

For Alliance this chain starts with the quest Bad Medicine given by Brother Nimetz at the Rebel Camp.
Upon completion of Bad Medicine you will automatically obtain the quest Just Hatched and the Lashtail Raptor Egg Fragment. Return to Corporal Sethman at the Rebel Camp with the new hatchling.
He will then send you on the quest I Think She's Hungry to feed the baby raptor some basilisk meat. Make sure you have the hatchling summoned while killing basilisks so she may take bites from the corpses as you kill them.
Next you must do The Fate of Kurzen given by Lieutenant Doren in the Rebel Camp. Continue on his chain and do Spared from Madness next.
Now take the hatchling to the Bal'lal Ruins @ 33.7, 37.2 where you will find a pile of skulls on the ground. Your hatchling will run up to the pile and grab a skull from it. Now he will give you the quest Favored Skull. Return to Osborn Obnoticus at the Rebel Camp (This is the NPC that you must have logged out then back in to see according to some Alliance players).
Osborn will then give you A Nose for This Sort of Thing to start trying to figure out who that skull belonged to.
After that do the next quest in the chain, A Physical Specimen.
After completing the above quest line, Bloodlord Mandokir will spawn and offer a "quest" of the same name. He really just wants to steal the raptor from you because it's special. I had this same problem. Make certain that you have completed the Bwemba quest line all the way through Making Contact in Booty bay. If Bwemba still tails you when you go to Stranglethorn, then you have not completed the quest line. If you have, then try logging out and back in at Rebel Camp. I did this, and it returned to normal with the quests available for pick up.

This is one of my favorite pets due to the backstory. I grinded my toon from level 1 to 85 and when you had to actually do the quests (not retroactively) and you had the lil raptor following you all around STV, it brings back some fun time memories. I'm glad to have her back. This is definitely one of the most heart felt quest lines in the game.

Being so small, she's hard to see in Mandokir's raptor pen circle but the exclamation mark on the mini map helps.

Edit: Your pet will also have a sub-title under Lashtail Hatchling, <(your name)'aka>

Hoping they will continue with this pet and maybe become a raptor mount someday.

Also if you stand by a corpse long enough, your raptor will run over, attack it, find a bone and then toss it.

Interesting side note, I went back to the Bal'lal ruins for archeology and the "original" quest version of the lashtail raptor spawned. You can see some of the differences. First size and the version you rescue has markings on the nose horns and much harsher/seasoned eyes.

Seems to be smart enough to not trigger on non-boned creatures. Hung out around some dead spiders in Tol Barad for 4-5 minutes wondering if she would start nomming on them, and she just stood there staring at me adoringly.

She will also do this with friendly player's corpses too! I was in a Bastion of Twilight group with my guild when we wiped and I was the sole survivor because I used Feign Death. While waiting for my guildmates to recover their bodies I noticed that my Lashtail Hatchling was playing with my guildies' corpses. Pretty cool IMO

If you do heroic Zul'Gurub, kill Bloodlord Mandokir, and have yet to finish or even start the lashtail hatchling quest chain, you can go ahead and start it or finish from where you left off at after you complete the instance or atleast killed him. You can go back into ZG using the same lockout as long as trash isn't back up. The lashtail hatchling will show up and you can complete your quest to obtain your pet without having to do the instance all over again.

Unlike the other hatchlings you can loot or find in nests, the Lashtail Hatchling is special because its eyes are open and blue, instead of being murky yellow like the others.

I did this quest a while back and got the pet.

This morning I decided to level my archy some out of boredom and ended up in Northern Stranglethorn. To my surprise the little pet popped up beside me on its own. Not sure if this is a bug or maybe something new added to the area? At first I panicked a bit, I thought maybe my character got rolled back somehow to before I did/completed the quest as it wasn't the 'aka pet that popped out, just a little level 1 Lashtail Hatchling, and it happily accompanied me alongside my normal companion, which is the Phoenix from MgT. I checked my companion tab to make sure my own Lashtail was there and it was. I summoned him and the little guy stayed. Tried bringing up others as well but it's still beside me.

Anyone else able to confirm this? Just curious to know whats up.

A real sense of accomplishment and joy filled me when I completed this quest. As a level 85 tank, I was able to complete the quest chain with extreme ease. After queuing up for Zul'Gurub, I readied myself to retake my hatchling, armed with the knowledge that she would be waiting for me after killing the Bloodlord. And sure enough, there she was. Warmage'aka, my beloved friend. Father has indeed returned. Blizzard needs to make more personal quests like this. They will put good meaning into doing them.

Thought I'd do a post laying out the different color variants of the hatchings, having recently completed my collection. I won't get into where each one comes from, as each link has plenty on that.

It's interesting that some of the hatchlings have very defined stripes on their backs, while others have less defined stripes and more like splotches/lines of color.

They are:
Darting Hatchling - Orange with cyan stripes and green eyes
Deviate Hatchling - Purple with cyan stripes and yellow eyes
Gundrak Hatchling - Cyan with dark blue splotches. Yellow eyes.
Leaping Hatchling - Dark Cyan, almost slate with violet splotches and yellow eyes
Obsidian Hatchling - Olive and sort of grey-purple with aqua splotches and yellow eyes (and round pupils, oddly enough)
Ravasaur Hatchling - Lime green with orange stripes and squinting orange eyes
Razormaw Hatchling - Light yellow-orange with blue stripes and green eyes
Razzashi Hatchling - Red/Burnt orange with green splotches. Cyan eyes.
Lashtail Hatchling - as the unique reward from An Old Friend, your 'aka has a slightly unique model. She's a bit bigger than the others, and has a more defined "beak" color. She also has large round eyes with round black pupils, whereas the others have the classic dinosaur thin line pupils. That aside, her colors are almost identical to Razzashi's, but with much larger stripes.

Most of the hatchlings do an idle roar(more of a screech really) animation/sound, with a few exceptions. One wanders around and leaps back to you with a screech when out of range (Leaping), one will tear off running around with a dust trail a la Egbert (Darting), and Lashtail reportedly will play with the bones of your fallen enemies.
(I could have sworn I'd seen a raptor other than Darting do the run but couldn't get him to do it, would like confirmation if anyone sees it)

Took a little time off to play D3. When I came back and saw the name change to Lashtail hatchling I was concerned they may have also removed the animation of eating my victims corpses and spitting out the bones. I am pleased to say, they did not as of today. Along with Perky Pug's butt wipe ani this is one of my fav's.

As of 5.2 the quest chain to get this pet is broken.

I spoke to a GM in game. They know it's broken, but they don't know why. Hopefully it won't take them to long to get it working again, but I'm sure the post-pach list is long and there are higher priorities on their To-Do list.

Do I have to complete the "Be a Raptor" quest in order to get the raptor back in the dungeon? I admit, this is hard, I can get to the second bridge, but usually get caught before I can hide again, and if I do get across it I get caught well before I can get to the gate. :( I've even tried jumping off the cliff thinking I can swim, no luck.

My biggest mistake in WOW

LOL after having the Loremaster achievement and nearly 680 unique pets at lvl 25.

I forgot to talk to this little pet in the raid :Zul gurub chained on 2 wooden poles to the right of the boss Bloodlord mandokir!

Left him there like 3 years... waiting for me to be rescued!

Once Be Raptor or Be Raptor is complete, it unlocks An Old Friend which rewards the rare quality B/B Beast battle pet Lashtail Hatchling.

An Old Friend is offered by the captured Lashtail Hatchling, appearing in the Zul'Gurub raid once you've killed Bloodlord Mandokir.

Note that if you're soloing this as old content, you can go straight to Bloodlord Mandokir, without having to kill any of the other bosses first.

Prior to 9.0, pet would dig through nearby bodies and bring you a bone, which it would then throw away. Now, you cannot see any bone being carried in the pet's mouth, but you can see it when she throws it away

I realize that it's mentioned in the "Sold-by" tab, but it never occurred to me it might be available from a Stable Master vendor once you've already completed the quest line and acquired your pet. Tonight I was in Searing Gorge working on Loremaster quests and stopped to visit the Stable Master to sell junk out of my bags. Unexpectedly, he had the Lashtail Hatchling for sale (45 silver)! I was only able to buy one, and none of the other stable masters I visited afterwards had one, so I don't know what the criteria is for them having it, but I'm delighted I don't have to do the questline on other toons to acquire my limit of this pet.

Following up - while in the Badlands the following day, I stopped to see the stable master and sure enough, he had a Lashtail Hatchling for sale. So now I have 3. The first one was the quest reward from ZG, of course, and the other two from Stable Masters.
