Yogg-Saron is one of the 2 named Old Gods, the other being C'Thun. It looks like Yogg-Saron will be the final boss of Ulduar.

Hey I am just thinking out loud here.... ( down rate me if I am wrong. I probably am )

If we chuck the fragments into the boss, he switches to hard mode and we wipe dose that mean "sorry outta luck" and you have to get the shards again? blizz probably would not do that to us but there is a chance we can get ripped off...

Elemental shamans kind of got cut. But the current on heal effect, which I forgot about in my last post, is:

Val'anyr Hammer of Ancient Kings - Equip Effect -- Your healing spells have a chance to cause Blessing of Ancient Kings for 15 seconds allowing your heals to shield the target absorbing damage equal to 15% of the amount healed.

I mean, I personally hope they change it but hey - on heal effect is on heal effect to me.

EDIT: The reason I hope this is a placeholder is because the best case scenario I can think of for me, a resto shaman with 2k+ spellpower and 20%+ crit (the minimums) is healing the tank with a 20k healing wave and him getting a 3k damage shield which the boss will immediately see fit to take off within the next 5 seconds. And that is IF the shield gets placed when I get a good crit, because it is an on chance. Of course there are other questions to ask, like whats the proc rate, does it proc off multiple jump spells like circle of healing and chain heal(probably not), and can you get multiple stacks of the shield buff. Just, right now I don't think this is really "grand" enough for a legendary weapon. If you use burning crusade as a starting point for legendary's (since vanilla wow was vanilla wow), we had anti demon weaponry that gave haste on chance, and a bow that made its own arrows.

Aww, I hoped the quest would at least involve a hard mode, now the only really hard part is to gather the fragments...

Edit: Yer your right, its only Sarth+1D kind of mode, my bad :) was getting the Realm First and this quest the wrong way around.

To help you on this for easy mode of Yagg (so far shown i think from the PTR) I think killing all the watchers will give you the easiest mode of Yagg, so having 1 Watch or None up would not be Sartharion+1 but Sartharion+3 (count that there is 4 watchers and you only need 1 up). So be a really hard fight to obtain it.

Unless my english is bad and it usually is, I think you have it backwords.

If there is 4 watchers it means you can do the fight with 0-3 Watchers helping you.

So he was correct in saying it would be similiar to Sarth1D. 0 Watchers would be harder then Sarth3D

Meh. As far as I'm concerned, this should have a label smacked on it that says SHAMAN / PALADIN ONLY.

I know Shamans are able to use staffs, but Atiesh wasn't available to you: however, what Shaman really used a staff with spirit on it anyways?

Warriors, Rogues, Ret Paladins, Hunters, Priests, Druids, Mages, and Warlocks have legendary available for their use. (Yes, Atiesh is no longer available, but the point is that you had one available to you where as Holy Paladins haven't. That's in a whole whopping almost 4 years.

I'm glad that there is a legendary healing weapon available, but there was the Atiesh. The first one available was itemized for Priest and Druid (Locks/Mages for the DPS version of Atiesh). Why can't Paladin/Shaman get something now?

To answer your question on what bosses have hard modes:

Flame Leviathan: Leaving 1-4 towers up, each tower giving Leviathan more health, more damage, an adding another thing to worry about on the battle field.

XT002 Deconstructor: Killing his heart before time runs out, will engage his hard mode, making him hit 40% harder, and faster. Aswell as refilling his health to full when the heart is killed. Not only that, but it adds more problems to the "Bombs" that he throws on people like Gravity Bomb will leave void zones, and the Light Bombs will create spark adds.

Iron Council: Easy mode consists of kill Steelbreaker, Molgeim, and finally Steelbreaker. Hard mode of this fight would be changing up who you kill last. When killing one of the council members, the other gain different abilities depending on who is killed in what order. Hardest mode would be leaving Steelbreaker for last.

Freya: Leaving the guardians up while engaging Freya is the way to engage the hard mode on her. Leaving 1-3 of the guardians up will provide freya with different abilities during the encounter.

Thorim: To fight Thorim on hard mode, you must reach him before 3 minutes passes after engaging his trash in the collusium. Hard mode on this encounter involves having his wife "sif" present which is not killable, an will attack the raid with several different abilities.

Hodir: Defeating hodir before he shatters his rare cache is this guys hard mode I believe... I am howver, unclear if he shatters his his cache due to a time limit, or if it's a matter of leaving the NPC's trapped in ice... or a mixture of both. I would wager a guess that it has a lot to due with not freeing the NPC's from being frozen.

General Vezax: This one I'm not sure about, but I believe he does have a hard mode, which involves killing him after defating the Saronite Animus. Again to clarify... this I'm not sure about.

Yogg-Saron: After defeating Hodir, Thorim, Freya, and Mimron... you can "Activate" them to help out with Yogg, not activating them is considered Yogg's hard mode, becuase you will lose out on the several buffs they will provide you, and your raid while fighting Yogg-Saron.

As posting this with only completing 8/14 bosses in Ulduar on 04/24/2009. Having only complete one of the hard modes successfully... all the information posted here is just what I've read up, an learned for myself.

Simply put, the first item is the item you receive when accepting this quest and you need to throw it into the maw of Yogg-Saron.
Second item.. well, clearly the item you loot from Yogg-Saron and turn the quest in, for Val'anyr itself.

I'd like to know what this "Deafening Roar" ability is that Yogg supposedly casts. I've seen no such ability during any phase of his fight. In fact, Yogg himself only casts two abilities, both in phase 3. Lunatic Gaze, and Empowering Shadows.

Unless he suddenly gains this ability when you do it without a keeper. That would explain why you're suddenly able to do it...

Although FinnrSlayer is probably right about the exremely low amount of players who actually have Atiesh, the reasons that it is legendary arent just because it came from Naxxramas (the Base of Atiesh was also from C'thun) and because it is no longer available.

There is alot of important lore behind the staff. According to http://www.wowwiki.com/Atiesh,_Greatstaff_of_the_Guardian#Information

"Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian is the staff once held by the Guardians of Tirisfal. Ancient History is completed by accessing the Archivum, which is unlocked after defeating the Iron Council/Assembly of Iron with either Steelbreaker or Runemaster Molgeim killed last.

And for those who are in the process of completing this quest (we just made our first mace last night), this buff (you have to click through to see the buff that spell causes) goes up on Yogg when the mace is properly tossed in, so that's a surefire way to make sure everything is set for the final kill. It needs to be thrown during the actual cast of Deafening Roar, which is about 2.3s long. It appears to happen fairly regularly, but based on our experience, it seems like he will actually stop casting Deafening Roar mid-cast occasionally in order to Lunatic Gaze, presumably due to the timers syncing up (we had at least 1-2 Deafening Roars not go off because of that). Additionally, it does appear that, as the quest says, the player does need to be in, or at the very least near, the mouth, based on the messages our mace winner Shockfleur was getting on an earlier attempt (she was standing in the mouth itself during the successful attempt).

I've done this quest and I was a little aprehensive while fightning Yogg, afraid I might screw up the throwing the fragment part.

It's simpler than I thought. The item that you need to throw has a 20 second cooldown, in case some are wondering if you "throw it once and lose it". The item can ONLY be used while Yogg is casting deafening roar, which makes this a lot easier. If you try to use it any other time during the encounter, you will get an error message "No valid targets". So, if the item is used and on a cooldown, your throwing was succesful and all you have to do is kill Yogg.

Also, it is worth mentioning that you do not need to face Yogg to throw the item. You can have your back to him to avoid sanity loss and still throw it.

After Yogg is dead, loot your quest item and turn it in at the room after Iron Council.

Hope this helps the aprehensive players on this quest (I was one of them!)

To begin with, the necessary path you must take to obtain this mace:
Paladin/Shaman/Priests/Druids
1. For the mentioned classes, you run Ulduar 25 man as a pug, or with your guild until you obtain 30 Fragments: https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=45038.
These drop from Bosses on 25 player difficulty, or Hardmode 25 player difficulty.

2. After you obtain 30 fragments, they then become a USE item, which is then turned into the quest item.

3. Upon gaining your Unbound, you must begin the fight of Yogg'Saron MINUS ONE KEEPER.
I.E. send only 3 of the 4 keepers of Ulduar down to assist you in the Yogg'Saron encounter.
The easiest we found, was Mimiron to exclude.

4. During the encounter you will have to use the mace during his Deafening Roar https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/spell=64189 (Hard to miss, game emotes plus DBM warnings make it easy to throw it on time). You'll only need to throw it once, but some nervous healers do so on every single roar to ensure they threw it on time!

5. Upon his defeat, when looted, your new almost complete mace will be masterlooted to you!

6. The final step is to take your new item back to the Iron Council room and through to the Console room in the back to complete the quest and receive your completed mace!

Multiple people can complete Val'anyr at the same time. Completed tonight with two at the same time. Both threw it into the maw of Yogg during Deafening. Two received as loot. If anyone was wondering.
