Edit: It looks like it does not provide Spirit Bond or allow you to use Master's Call. So I'm keeping my pet and using Exotic Ammunition as my level 100 talent.

After having a pet by my side for 100 levels it would kill be a bit inside to go alone for a damage bonus T_T

As soon as I put my hands on a beta client, I'll try and test this to exaustion. I want this to work so much is not even funny. As much as I like playing with pets, they're much more an annoyance to the micromanagement and sometimes they're so buggy, that in some fights a BM hunter have to change specs to avoid losing that much damage due to "pet bugs".

This won't fix the pet bugs for BM tho, but it'll stop the dps loss in fights like Immerseus.

Having not seen much definite opinion on how this talent works, or is intended to work, I am curious to know if picking this talent means you are simply NOT able to summon a pet.... or if you can use a pet, then if the pet dies or despawns due to distance (such as they sometimes do with Immerseus now), the bonus damage for this talent kicks in to make up for the loss in dps due to the dead/MIA pet? In that respect it may be an acceptable talent.

I still do not care to explore Draenor without my loyal cat Jack at my side, however.

Though Lone Wolf sounds very nice (particularly in a raid/dungeon environment where pets can be a problem), This talent will have some effects on some of your other spells and abilities.

Will disable Master's Call (this ability requires a pet)

Will make these talents useless:
30 - Intimidation
45 - Spirit Bond
75 - Blink Strikes

Glyphs that will not work/will not be useful with Lone Wolf:
(Major)
- Animal Bond
- Distracting Shot
- Master's Call (note: entire ability shut down with Lone Wolf!)
- Mend Pet
- Misdirection
- Quick Revival
(Minor)
- Fetch
- Lesser Proportion
- Play Dead
- Revive Pet
- Tame Beast

Math people will need to poke at this to see if the damage increase offsets the downsides of this talent
Also; we need more non-pet-related glyphs.

I keep hearing the same things about this ability, in that everyone either embraces the possibility of becoming a true solitary sniper, or rejects it under the belief that WoW's version of Hunters wouldn't be the same without a pet.

I, for one, like to think of this as (if done right) having the potential for something more in-between. Keep your pet out during raids and battlegrounds to keep those abilities you could only use as long as it's alive, but if it dies and you don't, at least your DPS won't suffer because this buff becomes active immediately after your pet croaks.

Hell, lore-wise, you could describe it something like:

"Your pet and you have been inseparable for countless seasons. You've both fought, bled, and recovered together from the chaos of more battles than either of you would ever care to remember. From those haphazard tours across Alterac Valley to the lair of the Black Dragonflight's matriarch herself, it's been proven, over and again, that your greatest strength lies in your partnership, and the reliance on one another's abilities. However, there had been a time — long, long ago — when you had once embraced a more lonesome road; one where there was nothing and nobody to rely on but yourself, and your skill with nearly any and every weapon you could get your hands on (lol). This was — and still is — who you are. The cold, honest truth is that you're no stranger to the life of a lone wolf, so as you stare down at the now-lifeless corpse of who had once been your most trustworthy and beloved companion, something that has long-since lain dormant awakes within you. The untimely death of your pet is not the end of a little piece of yourself. If anything, it's the beginning of a new part of you which your enemies shall soon come to fear."

I personally like the idea of playing without a pet. I've always wanted to be able to play the hunter as a kind of archer/bow(wo)man. I thought more of an Elvish archer style than the squarefooted forest-hunter type one!

Also, for years I would have liked the option to play with whichever pet I like instead of having to pick the pet that provides the necessary buff for the raid, dungeon or for solo play.
Since forever we've had to play with a wolf in order to do the most damage when doing quests.

As to the storyline-aspect: If I am a hunter and supposed to build up a strong relationship with my pet... it should be the one I feel drawn to the most, not a different pet every occasion.
Personally I love boars, but I hardly ever get to play with one because my raid needs a missing buff or in a 5 man dungeon I don't want to lose my or others' damage because I don't call a pet that provides a useful buff.
Maybe Blizzard wouldn't have to give every pet every buff but reduce it a lot, so we can actually play with a „beloved“ pet not with a forced upon us pet.

So in addition to making a change to the playstyle by playing without any pet, they could seriously think about that aspect I've described above. :-)

I feel like this and gladiator's resolve should be choices you can get early on. They fundamentally change how you play a class and can make a lot of previous talent choices completely useless. Weird to only have the option for these at 100.

I understand the desire for some players to go the solo sniper route and I don't have any issue with that. However if it gets to the point where Blizzard either A) requires this talent choice for some fights or B) Spends an excessive amount of class dev time on developing this playstyle beyond what it already is, then I'll be joining a long line of hunters speaking out against it.
Again, I don't have any issue with this playstyle, provided it doesn't start hurting those of us who want nothing to do with it. Being forced into it for even a single encounter, or having the rest of the class suffer because a significant amount of our already limited attention from the devs is being spent on it would certainly qualify as harm in my book.

I think the issue im having with this talent is not just the fact that it pretty much deem some of our glyph/talents useless, but also the missing of certain pet skills. I was gutted when they standardized our pet by giving fixed skills and removed the customizable talent tree, while i agreed that those passive talents were lacklustre, the choice of having active skills to add onto the flavor of playing hunter were great, i had a very supportive pet back then in raid where i used em to take hits after hits from tanks in raid. Anyway, my point is, with this talent, we are not going to even have those pets' active utilities anymore, i would love to spirit mend/roar of sacrifice/master's call on my team mates in need (yes Mr. Smart-S-Flamer i sure could pick other talent) but after picking this talent im pretty much just pew pew away, this talent sounds more like "selfish kitty" than "lone wolf", canines look up for each other, unlike those purries.

The other issues was that, Exotic ammunitions seems to be the only talents that doesn't make some other talents uselss, im sticking with that when i hit 100.

I personally love this talent. To be honest, I wish the exclusive-DPS classes had more differences between specs. I think this should not only be a talent but Blizzard should either include a new spec or modify one of the existing ones to make Hunters not use pets at all. This way, the many glyphs and talents that require a pet, should be modified to also benefit a "Lone Wolf". Pets can be very buggy at times (specially when firing to a different level/platform from where you are standing).

I like the fact that frost mages have a water elemental (should be ice btw) but the other specs don't. This makes the specs a bit more different, plus Locks can also sacrifice their pets to get buffs and health so...

I seriously hope that Blizzard considers this to add more variety to the hunter class, because to be honest, I've played all 3 specs and there isn't much difference between them.

An added bonus of this talent is that you can provide any type of buff now without the need of having a particular pet for each.

This is a huge game-changer for me. One of the things that has always held me back from rolling a Hunter is the pet. I don't really like that play style, it's part of why I have a hard time getting into the Warlock class. Now with this option, I'm much more interested in having a Hunter. I wish this could be implemented earlier than level 100, but at least I know down the road my Hunter will be a 'Lone Wolf'.

With the new Legion Lone Wolf that came with pre-patch that disabled Call Pet you can still use Tame Beast to get a new pet but it will be immediately dismissed after being tamed.

I was curious myself so thought others might be as well.

With Legion, is it still possible to use pet abilities with this? I tried to bring along pets that had old passives, and pets with newer abilities like bloodlust or battle res, and no matter what, clicking Lone Wolf never brings up any options.

Funnily enough, I still have the old "Lone Wolf" talent on my bars. It has a yellow arrow on its icon and reads "Gain the raid buff capabilities of your pets while you do not have them active", but does nothing upon clicking on it. Gonna continue keeping this "ability" on my bars nevertheless, for the sake of nostalgia. It's not like I'm struggling to fit all the current ones there anyways...

With 8.0.1 they absolutely butchered the no pet fun... Every hunter specc now requires you to play with pet in mind. $%^& THAT. I want to play the Ranger fantasy which doesn't use a freaking pet. I am so tired of Blizzard's bullcrap honestly. There was no reason to nerf this as much as they did and now if you play without pet as of 8.0.1 you will be in a disadvantage. Screw you Blizzard. There are 2 other specs already that utilize pet, can't we have 1 that doesn't focus primarily on that? I guess not. Blizzard and balance shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence.

Mathmatically, The current Lonewolf is stronger in AoE, and having a pet is stronger single target. However, the difference is very small, and it won't hurt you to go lone wolf or have a pet depending on the situation. That being said, one should keep a fercocity pet around anyway, in case you're the only one to offer a bloodlust/heroism style buff to the group. Also in my personal opinion ferocity pets make the best tanks for soloing, as the lifesteal feels more impactful than the health bonus. You'll want to get a cunning pet if you do old content for the speed boost too. Don't forget the various pets have utility even if you only bring them out occasionally.

Edit: With recent tuning changes Lone Wolf is stronger than a pet atm, but it now costs a talent point, so you have to decide if it's worth it.
