These don't seem to be guaranteed. I didn't get a single one from Heroic Eye of Azshara.

Edit: Hotfix on 11/3: Lingering Soul Fragments for the quest "Soul Prism of the Illidari" should now be guaranteed to drop from Heroic dungeon end bosses.

I think its stupid as hell that this isn't a guaranteed drop. It sucks bad enough that we have to farm them and that there is a weekly cap on them, but not making them a guaranteed drop is probably the worst thing they could have thought of.

(yes I'm a little salty about it since I have ran 4 dungeons and haven't gotten one yet.)

Edit. Hot fix to drop better gear. Still sucks that drop rate wasn't fixed. But a least it's worth it now.

I saw this quest on PTR and thought it would be a guaranteed drop with higher difficulties dropping more.. such a disappointment that they're not even guaranteed.

Generally don't understand this quest. It's incredibly long, to the point it actually looks bad compared to some of the old legendary drops from mop and wod raids look okay. And the rewards its offering me after 8+ weeks of running every single mythic esch time are... a level 855 item?

Got 9 from Mythic+9 run just now, after killing Cordana.
People have been confirming that the amount of Fragments that drop depends on the level of the Mythic you are doing.

From my experience, if you run mythic+, the amount of Lingering Soul Fragments that drops equals the + level of the keystone.

The Hunt for Illidan Stormrage = Seek out Allari the Souleater at Illidari Stand in Azsuna.

I will get this done...eventually. I run dungeons for world quests, but I've run 3 or 4 and haven't gotten one yet, which seems par for the course.

I'd love to see people who love Legion but complain about Vanilla explain this.

The annoyance is strong with the way they chose to word this quest...

Claim 80 Lingering Soul Fragments from the final bosses of Legion dungeons.

Higher difficulty dungeons provide a greater chance and quantity of Lingering Soul Fragments.

Would imply that Regular and heroic dungeons have the potential to drop these.

Okay and fair making it a low drop rate compared to say Mythic+ as well as Mythic+ potentially dropping more, seems fair.

What they also fail though to see/acknowledge is the #$%^ty loot reward vs the method they are forcing players in to using to get the items. For their attempts to remove the economy of selling runs for money/gold and making the game player friendly this one just completely blows that concept up.

Anyone doing Mythic+'s has no need or use for 855 items. Anyone doing EN on normal has no need for 855 items.

As I was overall excited for this story progression (as it seemed achievable singularly with the initial quests) this puts a sour taste in my mouth given we have THIS alongside the Suramar ramp up. I feels like I'm having to chose which cheese grater to run along my face.

A few questions that have not been asked.

1. Does this work on depleted Keystones?
2. Can you complete the same mythic+ dungeon for the quest items? (IE- run mythic +3 EoA and then another +3 EoA directly after and/or Mythic +3 EoA, then +4 EoA)

Question 1-
Ran EoA 4+ and received 4 shards.
Ran Eoa 5+ (within the same hour well after reset for the day) and received 5.
Ran Mythic +0 and got 1. I don't have time to test if running +0 twice will yield same results.

Keeping players from going further in the story like this is really underwhelming, one thing is having to wait weeks of RNG for gear progression which is fine but doing it with the main story feels worse than any TV series leaving a cliffhanger for a year.

Since there's a lot of people that say it's not guaranteed, I was confused at first, but after a bit of research here is some clarification:
- Mythic dungeons DO have guaranteed drops, moreover if you use a keystone +X you will get X Fragments guaranteed
- Heroics and Normal DO NOT give guaranteed fragments, chance seems to be ~50% for Heroics, even less for Normal

So, 2x Myth +5 per week seems the way to go...

Also, even if you don't have the required item level don't give up! There are plenty of people using the LFG and willing to boost your +2 key for the 3 caches, the hard part is just finding the first group to drop your very first keystone.

i have been running heroics 4-5 a day all week and havent had 1 drop yet for the soul fragments yet so i dont see how we r even supposed to get 10 a week i cant even get 1 SMH very perplexed

So if Xe'ra is in everyone's order hall and Soul Prism of the Illidari is a key part of the Illidan story line why make it so that the most of the player base can never complete it? So I guess Illidan stays dead....

It's not like this is generating the commitment (or the reward) of What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been.

I just did Darkheat Thicket +7 and won 7 lingering fragments... then help some friends doing Hall of Valors mythic and won one more fragment... then i realised that the counter didnt change on the quest... anyone have noticed that?

I'm 100% sure the item reward was 870 yesterday - I even mentioned this to my friends as we were doing some mythics. I am sure they initially were 855 as normal, but yesterday they were showing as 870 to me; today however they're at 855 again. Might be some bug, or is there a chance the reward somehow scales ? I doubt it, I suppose.

Notice a lot of people complaining about the drop rates and also notice these people are running heroics. I only run mythic and have always had drops from last boss. I'm sure the level of the mythic plus determines the number of soul fragments dropped (mythic = 1 fragment, mythic +5 = 5 fragments, etc.) but I have not tested this.

Blizzard is always pushing people into group content. It's the only way they stay afloat. 5 people...or 40 people...paying them instead of getting any substantial rewards if you prefer to play solo content. By making the drop rate poor, it just ensures you continue playing and forces you into group play. Personally I just won't do Mythics. Back in the day when I had enough friends playing and we ran raids sure. But not the case now, and I'm not gonna deal with the elitist, rude jerks that won't take you in a mythic unless your gear is good enough to carry them. I've seen then advertising 865+ on my server. Ridiculous!

But these kind of quests are blizzard's way of continuing the business model. They don't care if one or two people quit, but oh heaven forbid if they can't keep their raids and heroics going. It's all about the money folks. I really hate quests like this that force you into being a Blizzard puppet. Always have, always will.

-You can only get 10 per week
-Doing a Mythic will get you 1 lingering soul fragment
-If you do a mythic+ when you open the chest you will get a number equal to the Mythic+
-Example Mythic+5 will give you 5 lingering soul fragments.
Simple enough the fastest way to get these would be to just do a Mythic+10 or higher

Welp, I guess I found *that* quest for Legion. You know, the annoying one that is in your quest log the entire life of the expansion. Having a playstyle where I'll be lucky to get in a heroic/regular mythic or two a day means I'll be getting one at a time. Guess I can chip away at it doing other things in the dungeons.

PSA: The information below might be considered spoilers so read at your own risk.

The Follow up requires you to kill Helya and reclaim Illidan's soul and return to Light's Heart in your class hall, this quest gives another 870 piece of gear. Afterward you will get a quest to bring Light's Heart to Khadgar.

I was stuck on 50 and kept doing dungeons and seeing them drop but the total didn't change. I finally realized there is a weekly cap of 10. So much for catching up during some off-work time.

As of today it was discovered that this quest leads to upgrading your legendary. It is not strictly for "cosmetic-only items" as Blizzard led us to believe.

Hopefully this is looked into since an 8-week quest is harsh for alts and the like, but start working on your fragments if you care about raiding. The information was found by players on the PTR and discussions are taking place on multiple forums with no blue posts yet. I'll edit if it changes.

This quest was released with patch 7.1 into live game soon 10 weeks ago, and yet you can still acquire only 10 / week. Why isn't it just increasing its weekly cap by 10 each week following the release of 7.1?

For people who can remember A Test of Valor from Patch 5.1 back in the day which started out as 6000 before getting halved to 3000 for alts to catch up on.....how long until this one gets halved to 40 for the same reason

Just looking at all the unfavorable comments to "Soul Prism of the Illidari" makes it look like I won't be able to complete it anyway. My toons even though they are level 110 are too weak to survive most of the dungeons solo, and after I team up with other players, they tell me I shouldn't even bother trying to help others in the dungeons or raids. This is just SAD!

I'm a relatively new WoW player. In fact, I'm pretty green when it comes to MMOs in general. I'm still learning about various mechanics and getting comfortable with the gameplay. As a result I tend to stay away from more competitive scenes, usually sticking to the normal difficulty setting for dungeons. I'm only actually playing the game for the story anyway. A lot of the co-operative aspects of the game hold no interest to me at all, which is why I barely ever even do dungeons unless I'm overlevelled enough to solo them. Obviously with Legion being so new, that's not going to happen, especially with the level scaling being used. This quest is forcing me to alter that policy in order to get what I play the game for, which by itself is something I'd be OK with if it only needed to be done a few times. However, this is requiring me to do multiple heroic and normal dungeons over the course of 1-3 days (I'm not even going to bother trying mythic ones) every week for two months.I find myself feeling genuinely bad for the people I get grouped with, as the skill difference is incredibly obvious. I've been kicked from games for slowing the group down multiple times today alone, and it is almost always justified. With one exception over in BC, this quest has housed my worst experiences with this game to date, and it is locking off my favourite questline in the expansion so far. I really wish the level scaling allowed me the option to set up a solo dungeon experience so I could just go through at my own pace, eliminating the need to wait in a queue, and creating a better experience both for myself and for the players that would otherwise get stuck lugging me around to do something I don't care for in order to unlock something completely unrelated to the task itself. Bottom line, this quest sucks.

This quest just brought my whole story line to a halt.

It will sit in my quest log forever or until a couple new versions of Wow are released and I will no longer know what it does or why.

I, like many other comments above, enjoy doing the quest lines, but don't feel they should be burdened by quests where you have to
run unenjoyable dungeons continually for weeks.

In the PTR for 7.2 the number of Lingering Soul Fragments needed has been reduced from 80 to 40. It is not clear if this will stay this way in live, but it appears as though it will.

So, I was sitting at around 40/80 at the time I killed Gul'dan for the first time on my toon. How is this possible? Doesn't this create a plot hole? So technically he gets freed anyway during the fight atop the nighthold, but I thought Illidan's soul was separated from his body yet he comes alive and finishes off Gul'dan. I'm just wondering how this plot hole will affect the new class campaign progress in 7.2, since I was able to kill Gul'dan without the fragments (so technically his soul should be separated from his body still, and can't be alive?) but will I be able to progress with my class campaign without them, since it's incomplete in a way even though I've defeated Gul'dan?

As of 7.2 this quest now requires 40 (down from 80). I did not see this included in patch notes but it is a nice change.

Edit: Also included in the change: You can now obtain 20 per week (up from 10).

I am, in general, super into WOW because the math, in general, works out with regard to leveling up. That being said, this quest doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Granted that the DR on high level items is low, but to collect 40 lingering soul fragments takes a month with the cap. So, playing daily and doing world quests/mythic keystone dungeons one would expect to MASSIVELY out level the rewards of the quest by the time it's complete. The only way around the possibility of out leveling gear is to not play once the soul fragment cap is reached. That doesn't seem like a great strategy for blizzard. I know I don't understand the massive intricacies of game design, but this quest seems like offering somebody a rowboat if they burn down their yacht. As far as I can tell, a simple fix would be to remove the weekly cap. If removing the cap on this currency interferes with other game mechanics, then make a new currency just for this quest and make it so that THIS currency has no cap.

Just confirming that faction changing removes this quest and progress, along with any other quest you might have in your log.

Edit: Going back to the Allari the Souleater to pick up the quest again also restores your progress.

It should state in the Quest that you can only get 20 fragments a week.
If you do a dungeon and you have the 20 for that week but you see a fragment drop, it will not count!

Was 3 dungeons in and each dungeon dropped a fragment but my counter was still 20/40.

Quest chain that follows this:

Trial of Valor: The Once and Future Lord of Shadows - defeat Helya in Trial of Valor (can be done in LfR) and use the prism on Illidan's Soul (platform to right, only 1 person in raid needs to do it)
The Nighthold - deliver Light's Heart to Khadgar in Dalaran (starts in class hall)

The lore leading into Nighthold follows on from this, (Gul'Dan's defeat) but AFAIK, the quest chain ends here. So note that for alts, the whole of the quest chain with that starts with Khadgar sending you to retrieve the mysterious light object from Suramar, is optional if you are not a Lore-repeated fan and don't care to see Illidan's defeat in Black Temple from his view (again).

Update: the only class that does need to do the first quest (to retrieve the Lightbound Object) is Paladins. If you do NOT retrieve it, you cannot progress your Class Hall quest. The quest chain has now had the gate effectively removed as it now only requires 5 instead of 40.

I just logged into my shaman today after the weekly reset and the quest was completed with only needing 5 Lingering Soul Fragments. As of yesterday I had only earned 11 and it was still expecting 40. I guess there was an unannounced hotfix today. Not that I'm complaining.

Can confirm that I picked this up on an alt today and quest text said 5 fragments (before accepting), even though the quest text (after accepting) still says 40. I can confirm on my main that it is now 5 fragments (I had 15 yesterday).

I had a feeling they were going to do something like this in the twilight of Legion, and I'm very happy that they did. Due to financial issues, I had to sit almost all of Legion out since just after 7.1 dropped, and I did not think I would have time to catch up on the story before BfA. When I logged in, my main suddenly had all of his soul fragments.

I just noted that the requirement has apparently been dropped to _5_ Lingering Soul Fragments, a much more rational number.

With many characters (I don't term them as "alts" since I treat many as main activities), this quest was ridiculous, especially given a modest eventual reward. So I just ignored it.

Its looks like the quest actually auto completes now. Just got to this point in the Warlock Class Hall campaign on an alt and the moment I picked it up, the quest was marked complete in my quest log.

I did this quest during the pre-patch for Shadowlands.

Had no problem running the dungeons solo as a lvl 50 Survival Hunter. The first dungeon I accidentally ran at Normal difficulty and did not get a Lingering Soul Fragment, but every dungeon I ran at Heroic after that did have 100% drop rate. Depending on the order of your quests you can actually couple this with some of the region "wrap-up" dungeon quests or even some Legion profession dungeon quests.

Go solo or grab a friend, run 5 dungeons and collect some gold and transmogs while you are at it!

If this is only possible in legion heroics now, it seems this quest can't really be completed during leveling Legion chromie time.

If you are <50 you can't queue for heroics.
If you are 50 you can't queue for legion.

So you have to solo it as itemlevel 100+ or get a LFG legion heroics going.

If you are looking to do this after Legion has passed. The quickest dungeons are Darkheart Thicket if you skip Dresaron. Or Maw of Souls for less running around and mobs. Both dungeons have portals to the outside of the dungeons for a quick reset and refarm.

To do this I require lingering soul fragments from powerful beings found across this world. Bring me enough and I will craft a soul prism capable of holding the soul of the master - at least long enough to transfer into the naaru.
