I took a dungeon queue while doing this quest and when I came back from the dungeon the little guy was gone. I tried logging off and back on and abandoning the quest but he wouldn't come back. :\

The Lashtail Hatchling will continue to run around (often into groups of mobs, much to my dismay) digging up fetishes (fetishi?) as long as you are in the questing area; even after you have received the required amount (UI will tell you "you cannot carry any more of those items"). The hatchling will not follow you back to the quest giver, but you can re-summon it with your Lashtail Raptor Egg Fragment (http://www.wowhead.com/item=58165#.)

You can put a raid icon on your Hatchling and make him easier to follow around.

You can't de-summon him like you can with pets even after the quest is done. Like what Abiwho said, he will continue to run around and dig up the fetishes as long as you are in the area required for it. He will stop once you leave the area. And he tens to keep on running even if he runs into other mobs so be prepared for some fighting!
Adding additional info also, you don't really need to follow him, just stay near him, he'll go dig it up and toss the fetish to you.

She looks so cute tossing the fetishes! And yes, you have to leave her in the quest area, then re-summon her after you leave the quest area.

Went to the quest area, stealthed on my rogue and went afk for a while. Came back and this quest was completed. WHO'S A GOOD BOY, DOING ALL THE WORK BY HIMSELF? *pet*

Why would anyone decide that resurrecting a dangerous troll is a good thing?

Just to help those who are used to clicking on a gear icon or a sparkly in order to pick it up, you need do nothing to get the fetishes your hatchling finds. He will find them on his own, and within a few seconds toss them to you of his own accord. You need not even be right next to him. I was going mad trying to click all around him to loot the fetishes before he ran off. :)

Scared the hell out of me. Fortunately, I was wearing Infallible Tikbalang Ward... A lot of Tikbalangs spawn in this area.

The way this quest plays reminds me of Secret of Evermore, a SNES game in which the protagonist has a dog that goes off on his own to sniff out alchemical reagents for his master to gather.
