To Clarify a bit go back to Go'Bolar quarry after you get there look back towards the road you came in on and you will see a gnome standing atop a platform,even though you cant speak to him as soon as ya walk up on the platform an aircraft will land,hop on the aircraft and you are on your way.hope this helps some.

I had to complete a few quests starting with Sgt. Bahrum at Helm's Bed Lake. Since i was already 31 they were very quick and it also helped my rep.. Prior to doing these I could not board the airship and ran around trying to do every quest until I found the right one. Once you get to the airfield there are a few quests also. The dropping bombs one is fun and you still get the same amount of rep as a lower level.

Some of these posts can be a bit (unintentionally) misleading. You can't just hop onto the biplane to the airport; you have to trigger that by completing 3 or 4 quests at Helm's Bed Lake, after which it's painless.

Either that or just fly in on your flying mount...

You have to mount a plane that is back at the quarry. Just to the left of the inroad is a platform with a plane to take you to the airfield. You will find Commander Stonebreaker on the other side of the airstrip after you land.

To clarify for people with MOUNTS already, you can just fly there and talk to the npc, the airplane ride is not required.

I was rather hoping that there was a flight path at the airfield that would become available after you'd finished these quests. I mean, after all, the guy that flies you from the dwarf/gnome starting areas tells you, while you're in flight, that they've "opened the road to the Ironforge airfield."

Not true, as far as I can see.

Is this quest still active? I am leveling a new toon and cannot find it. Sargent Bahrum only has one quest, free the ice bound dwarfs, and none others.

I had noticed the gnome and his flying machine well before they were needed for the quest, so imagine my surprise and confusion when I get there and neither are where I had previously thought they were! Just wanted to say that if you are honestly having problems with finding the flying machine on the little wooden platform...look under it. You'll still be able to hop into the machine regardless. Hopefully this bug hasn't gotten more than just me, though.

For anyone interested in getting to Ironforge Airfield by ground, without taking Mathel Rustwrench's flying machine, you can take this path:

1. Enter New Tinkertown (the Gnome starting area). Turn right inside the gate, and follow the hills north.
2. Go to the north wall of Crushcog's Arsenal. Stand in the center of the wall, and turn to approximately 1:00 o'clock.
3. Head up the mountain ridge in front of you behind the small trees. When it starts to become too steep, veer to the right of the ridge.
4. There should be snow fields in front of you covering the entire mountainside. You should be in a zone called "Chill Breeze Valley." Keep heading up the mountain on a bearing of approximately 2:00-2:30 o'clock.
5. You ought to encounter several dwarf sledders riding down the mountain and walking back up.
6. Continue this same direction as high up as you can. You're basically walking over Ironforge Mountain along the north side.
7. Eventually you will start to descend, and will come to some slopes and cliffs overlooking Ironforge Airfield. Depending on the path you choose, you ought to be able to come into the airfield without any falling damage.

Mathel Rustwrench, a reference to Mathias Rust, a German teenager who flew his rented Cessna 172 from Finland to the USSR and landed near Red Square, Moscow, during the Cold War. Funny stuff.

Just FYI, if you get a message that you are busy and can't mount the airplane right now, it would seem that you just need to wait a couple of minutes and then try it again. I'm not sure why, but that happened to me. The other person in my group flew away just fine, but I had to bide my time and try several times to mount. Finally, it worked.

FYI for ALT players: Under level 20 you can't fly or even use a mount unless it's the "Summon Chauffeur" heirloom mount. I farmed my way back to Ironforge and was surprised I could not get to the airfield from inside Ironforge (no I don't explore it on my main). Only after reading the details more thoroughly did I discover that I had to trek back to the Go'Bolar Quarry. 😒 So if you read this before you head out then your doing better than I already. LOL

Mathel Rustwrench Is located at 75.28 52.76. He is standing on top of a platform next to a plane. He is in the Gol'Bolar Quarry. Get on the plane and it will fly you to the airfield.

If there is one thing I absolutely detest about WoW it's the convoluted travel. I am not interested in the wild, weird, wacky world of Azeroth. I don't want to take a Michelin tour of the visually stunning landscapes. Just make it possible for me to get to the quests without having to come to Wowhead every half an hour. This isn't game play, it's torture. Stop it

Board Mathel's Flying Machine at the Gol'Bolar Quarry.

Description

According to the plans you captured, the Dark Irons are planning a large-scale attack on the Ironforge Airfield! The council has moved most of our forces down into Dun Morogh to deal with the instability brought by the cataclysm, leaving our defenses weakened at the airfield.

We need a way to get you to the airfield quickly. Take the road back west toward Gol'Bolar Quarry and find Mathel Rustwrench. He should have a flying machine you can use. Go!
