For those wondering, the marking on the map is wrong. It's much farther north in the ruins all around Ranazjar Island. Little rocks like the picture above you use the stick on. You then loot the items that pop out of the rock and hope for fragments. And expect to be at it a while. Very low drop rate. For reference, I had 77 of the Illegiable versions and about 3-4 tablets drop per site. Add swim time (though as a naga is much faster) and finding the spots and it's quite annoying for a non-kill based quest.

The quest worked right for me but I had a hard time finding the rocks I needed.

Look for Ancient Rubble rocks just south of Ranazjar Isle among the underwater ruins. (They don't sparkle). Use the Slitherblade Staff next to the rock to break it. It will unearth several small tablets. Loot these and combine 4 to make the quest item.

These things are rather hard to spot, the easiest thing to do is to swim around and spam your staff button (4) and look where it shoots the frost bolt and then collect the rocks

Definitely map is marked wrong - it is anywhere from the southeast of the isle to the mainland shore.

Something that makes this quest CONSIDERABLY less annoying is that the staff a) has a range and b) can be used while moving. The rubbles are somewhat hard to pick out, but if you just swim around and spam the staff use, it'll shoot a big blue bolt and find the rubble for you.

If you want to save time looting, either I'm extremely luck (or unlucky) but I only got the runes I needed out of the runes that had the yellow symbol on them.

A note to anyone using bar mods. You might need to display the original blizzard bars to do this quest. To "use" the staff you actually have to use an ability on the bar, and not use the staff itself. Once I enabled default blizz bar I was able to see the buttons to actually use the staff.

Guys, there's absolutely no need to go looking for the stones, once you are south-east of Ranazjar Island, where all those rocks are, just keep spamming away skill #4 while swimming, I found my 4 in under 5 minutes this way.

I also found the tablet rocks to usually be next to idle naga. Maybe it was just me...

Protip:

Just swim around near the bottom of the ocean. Spamclick the ability "4".
The ability will actually find a thing that you need itself, as the range is very long.

Another thing that this quest DOESN'T mention is the fact that after you collect 4 of these ancient relics, go to somewhere safe where there aren't any eite sharks or naga, take off your disguise and combine the 4 relics from your inventory, that will create what you're looking for!

BTW, you'll know when you've collected 4 when you're not able to click on the yellow tablets.

After collecting the 4 you need to combine them, you don't have to leave your disguise just press the F12 key on your keyboard for your bag.

I too found a few East of Ranazjar Isle along the Slitherblade Shore, around the ruins. I found a couple at 37,14 and one at 36,12. They look like greyish mound of stone on the ground or on the floors of the ruins.
When you use the Shatter Rubble ability on the pet bar the rubble shatters and 3 tablets for each will appear. Each tablet has a color on it, glowing from the inside, pink, yellow or green(one each per rubble). Only the yellow ones seemed to give the quest item.

It is not necessary for players to spend "hours" trying to do this quest. Unless they had to stop to fight often or weren't wearing their disguise, it will be easy enough. See instructions below.

NOTE: This quest IS obtainable and completable by the Horde as well as Alliance.

I found everything within 5 minutes (including swim time). Do NOT go NW or immediately north of the island. You will either get lost or not find much (even though the quest text says just north, don't believe her...). Instead, go to map coordinates anywhere around (35,5 x 10,5) and swim around near the bottom, there should be 4+ ruins just in this spot, with 1-2 piles of rubble per ruins. NOTE: It is not necessary to swim into the deeper chasms (nothing down there).

As cynberly said, the non-grey fragments lightly twinkle either a small yellow dot, small pink dot, or small green dot on the three tablets that appear from each pile of rubble and this is noticeable if your graphics are turned up. Two will be junk, one will always be what you need. Collect all four real non-grey fragments usually found in the yellow lightly glowing rubble, right-click to use/merge them (do NOT need to exit naga form), and instead of returning to Valishj, you get a new quest "Mystery Solved" to return the tablet to the Cenurion Researcher Korrah.

When you turn in the Ancient Engravings of Neptulon Ancient Engravings of Neptulon to Korrah Cenarion Researcher Korrah for that quest, it casts Strip Naga Disguise Strip Naga Disguise which also intentionally destroys the Slitherblade Charm (quest turn-in text did not originally state this). It is a great swim item for non-druids, and >Charm< itself is only able to be activated when your map says 'Slitherblade Shore' zone. Which means from the moment you use it you can -walk- or -swim- only in Desolace or through the west coast of Stonetalon Mountains (unless you have a speed buff and try going south through Feralas which I was unable to test before losing the Charm...).

Great charm for sneaking up on level 80+ farmers who keep killing Valishj on the islands, as the charm gives you a 150% swim speed and breath water buff. So if you have NOT completed all of the other quest chains in this area yet, do NOT turn in this quest until you do in order to take advantage of this swim/underwater breathing buff!

Lol, I love this quest now, my RL friend all of a sudden calls me on skype and he's new to WoW so he's like "OMFG! I've spend 3 !@#$ing hours on this lame-ass quest" and I have already explained to him if he has a problem, he should go to wowhead, and when I asked him about that he said he didn't know how to use it. So I go on Wowhead for him to check out this quest, and I find out he only needs 4 of thoose fragments, and I ask him "So, how many did you collect? Because you just need four to make the quest".. Then he went quiet for a moment before telling me he had collected 80 of the *!@#ing things.. I laughed so much I fell of my chair. Litterally :D

Quest has been fixed. No need for different color fragments. Just get 4, non-grey, fragments and combine them (get out of naga form so u can open bags). Quest done.

I have a problem in this mission. I was able to locate the 4 tablets under the first rock, and I got the first one, but not the second because I had full items. Then I went and attacked a sea creature to return normal, and removed 3 items to make space, and then went back and the items tablets were missing. I went back to the lady naga to see what i need to do, all she says is well, did u get them or something. I thought destroying the wand that she gave me might trigger the quest again, but after destroying it, she didn't give me a replacement. I destroyed my naga charm too, but I was given another one. But not the wand. And I'm stuck in this mission. I really wanted to do this :( . Any help would be great,

This quest was easy. I just held down both mouse buttons to swim and spamed the 4 key. I got 10 of the worthless fragments before I discovered that the fragment needed glowed a faint yellow which is hard to see. You only need 4 of them. Then click on them to combine them and the quest is finished. I found all of the fragents just a little south and east of Ranazjar island. Use the B key to open your bags to see how many of the yellow fragments you have and then right click on them to combine them. If there are no sharks around you can do it in the water.

i read all the comments on this page about the strange area and how difficult these are to find and wasted about 15 minutes swimming around mashing 4.

i decided this wasn't working and went into 1st person and scoured all the reef area. what i found was that the rock fragments seem to have a high spawn rate nearest to the sunken buildings and pillars.

i've uploaded a screenshot of the map where i found them, in the pink circle i found at least 6 rocks (JUST enough of the tablets for the quest).

I came here to see how long did it take to other ppl to do this quest and what surprised me is that alliance tag that wowhead has... it's totally wrong because i just did it and i am horde.
Anyway the first rubble that opened it had one quest item, the second rubble also had one quest item but after that i opened at least ten more before i found the other two missing quest items.
What is really annoying is the distance between them i was swimming for at least 2-3 minutes before i find one.

You can find piles of rubble near ruins under water. There's a few south east of Ranazjar Isle. If you see a sunken ruin, spam 4 and you are bound to find some. I got my 4 fragments in 5 or 6 rubble piles. Good luck.. ;)

north of the island you get the quest from there will be underwater ruins. Stick close to the ruins, most of the spawns occur around them underwater. Pay close attention when you open the tablet fragments, if set to autoloot easy to overlook when you have them. ignore the illegible fragments.

Points worthy to note from a Loremaster-to-be:

Spamming '4' will shoot the staff at any rubble within range and is usable while moving. Just watch for blue orb-like things coming from the staff and note the direction they're heading - there's your busted rubble, go get your runes!
The map marker is buggy. Don't be disheartened or abandon your quest if after collecting two or three fragments your map disappears. You can keep going, you just need to remember the zone you were cruising through and just keep spamming '4'.
The actual runes you want to collect from any rubble you zap will twinkle.
This really is a laborious quest - just knock it out and move on.

I didnt read all posts here so maybe someone already said this but if so i appologise.

I had a hard time finding any rocks just by swimming around and look for them. What i did was just swimming around south off Ranazjar Isle and spammed action 4 on the bar. if there was a rock in ranged it started firing and i just swam over there an looted.

If u mean regular yellow stones in the water u are on wrong stones. U should find a "smashable" rock and from that one u get a yellow and red and blue stone. only the yellow one contains the questitem needed.

I found that all of the rubble was in the vicinity of a Slitherblade Myrmidon. So just swim close to one of them and press "4". Often more than one container spawns so remember to open all of them.

I got super excited when I finally looted something that wasn't vendor trash... and then realized I needed 4 more and abandoned the quest.

this isn't necessary to complete your Desolace loremaster if that's what you're going for (for Alliance, at least, I can't speak for Horde)

Worst. Quest. EVER. I spent an hour swimming around spamming 4, and I had 20something of the gray tablets and only 2 of the needed ones. Got tired of the quest and since it's not needed for loremaster, deleted it..
I glitched. I was unable to delete the quest, the tablets, the charm, or remove the disguise. I was also unable to hearth. Then all the naga disappeared.
I ended up having to minimize wow and close it from my homescreen.

If you have your graphics on low, turn them up. I had mine on low and stood in the center and spammed 4 and was see the staff shoot out but couldn't see where it was landing. also without high graphics I couldn't see that there was more then one thing in a pile to be looted.

Spamming 4 did not work for me, it just kept saying "Out of Range".

I found the fragments very quickly after I figured out how to really find them.

Circle around the perimeter of the highlighted area and search for the ruins, you'll find the Ancient Rubble at all of the ruins! And the ruins are easy to spot. When you crush the rubble 4 tablets will show up, but one on is one of the 4 you're looking for, so swim to other spots to find the rest, then just combine them.

Hope this helps someone, because I don't feel like any of these comments helped me!

I spent way too much time looking for them in the first place. (You want a spotted rock. Take a look at the screenshots.) And then more time finding the right tablet. Don't forget you need to find 4 of them and then click on them to form the one you need. Here's a hint, go out to the water around 37,14 and go down in the water and you will see a temple. A lot of the rocks are in and around it. Hope this saves you time.

So this may be the simple approach, but like others I was having trouble with this quest. Since the default quest marker is a general area, I found that if I simply just spammed the heck out of the 4 button while swimming I was able to find the nodes 10 times faster than actually looking for them. Just swim a path around the quest marker and spam the staff and you will complete in under ten minutes.

What no one has said is that you need to collect 4 BLUE fragments, then right click on them. Gray fragments are useless. Watch your bags and look for the BLUE fragments.

Just a few points.
Don't be an idiot like me - use the b key to open your bags to see how many of the fragments you have.
You need 4.
When you have 4, click on them to combine them - the quest will complete and you'll get Mystery Solved which tells you to return to Korrah.
Return all the way to Korrah in Naga form - you'll lose the disguise when you turn in Mystery Solved.
You can mine in Naga form.

Much easier now. Swim around and click the button. Watch were the effect goes. The ability is castable around 30 yards. The correct tablets will sparkle now.

The map coordinates are currently correct. You are looking for small stones with a green glow above them. Swim around and occasionally use #4 (smash rubble), Once in awhile you will see a shot shoot off in a direction. Follow it and collect the stones (if you are too close, it will take a moment for them to appear). The yellow ones give you the fragments you need. The rest are vendor trash.

As mentioned before, you have the charm to change back. So... I ran this thing for almost 30 minutes when I read you combine them. I'm a naga, where's my pack? Yep, have to turn off the naga disguise (icon in the corner by your minimap), combine them, then use the charm to change back. Yeesh!

One of the more confusing quests in the game, for several reasons:

the map marker seems off -- I could only find any directly south of Ranazjar Island
when you shatter the rubble it can take 5 - 10 seconds for tablets to show up (at least on my server/battlegroup). On my first two pieces of rubble I didn't realize that anything was even going to appear. I assumed if there wasn't something there immediately, there was nothing under the rock.
It's not clear from the quest text that you need to combine pieces of rubble to create the Ancient Engravings. It's not unlikely that a player could swim around for quite a while expecting one of the rubble piles to simply reveal the engravings. If you mouse over the tablet fragments it will tell you to combine 4 of them. You won't even know this until you manage to find the first legible tablet.
The quest summary simply displays 0/1 Ancient Engravings of Neptulon, again making it unclear you need to collect 4 tablets first.

I ran around at first getting very aggravated with this quest not finding anything and so I decided to look it up on the internet. After reading this I got kinda nervous that it was gonna take forever to finish lol. I just swam around and kept spamming the 4 button and carbonite helped giving me the exact location of the quest (cause wow map was wrong) but every time the 4 button would work it would shoot a spark in a direction and when I followed it there would be 3 tablets to right click. Now I will tell you that the tablets normally come up on a very flat surface (maybe that'll help you find them) but just keep spamming it until it works and then follow the direction of the shoot of lightning and look for a flat surface and you should find them. Not every one works but after finding 4 (of the ones that work) in your bags (it will not tell you when you've got enough you just won't be able to loot any more) you right click then and bam your quest is complete. I hope this helps someone as it took me a while to figure out how to do this quest.

This quest is very frustrating. You will see a lot of these. You are looking for piles of Ancient Rubble. It is easier to find the piles of Ancient Rubble if you focus more on looking for the telltale faint glow coming off of distant piles, than trying to see the actual piles themselves. Once I changed my focus, I started finding a lot more piles. That being said, when you shatter a pile one to three fragments, some of which are quite hard to see, are created. Loot them, looking for a Ancient Tablet Fragment. You have to pay attention to the loot descriptions in the chat frame. Once you have found four of them, hit the "B" key to open your backpack bags and then click on a fragment to combine them to complete the quest.

I have to say that I found ALL FOUR ancient engravings right around the spot marked on the map.l So dont always believe what everyone else has said about finding the engravings. ALSO note that as you click on the engraved stones themselves, ( i have expanded version of WOW), they will tell you that they are "ancient engraved stones": THESE are the ones you want. All else is junk. I found my 4 JUST BELOW (in a south-southeast direction) from the supposed "erroneous mark" on the map.(##RESPBREAK##)520##DELIM##Onyx1831##DELIM##Edited for abuse of bold.

As of 6.0.2 the ones that are the actual quest item will sparkle, meaning you can loot only those and leave the junk ones.

For some reason I am continuously clicking the staff when around or above or directly on the yellow piles of rubble and nothing is working. There is no blue bolt or anything. Do I need to be in Naga form in order to complete this quest? I don't want to give up on it just because I can't figure this out.

I found a good majority of Ancient Rubble piles at coordinates 29,30. And these Ancient Rubble piles appear to glow just a bit but are not clickable. You have to use the "attack" in the #4 hot key location called "Shatter Rubble" once this is done the Ancient Rubble pile is then destroyed to reveal a clickable quest item. Once you get four of the white quality and not grey quality items from the piles combine them in your inventory to make the final quest item.

You need to collect 4 fragment and afterwards you have to "merge" them (=using the items in your inventory). Keep in mind that you are technically in a vehicle, so some addons might hide your bags. But you need to access them while being a naga.

The quest will not tell you when you have the four tablets on your bag. At first it appears you only have the unusable tablets. The only way I found out I had four good tables, was that I left in frustration. After looking at my bags, I had the four quest tablets and over 120 bad ones.

Moral of the story, you must manually check once in a while, although while in naga form, I don't know (or noticed) if you can check your bags.

Tip: Like someone else mentioned, spam the staff while swimming to find the piles you need to check out.

Re-running a lot of old world quests since the update with new character and level matching zones. I've done this quest twice before with no problems. This time, however, and this is no exaggeration - I spent 4 hours and collected 2000 unusable tablet fragments and no ancient engravings. After the first thousand, I opened a ticket and the support person just told me to keep cranking. After the second thousand, I tried the time-honored tradition of dropping the quest and re-picking up. After that, I collected all 4 tablet fragments needed in about 2 minutes from the first 10 piles I checked. If you are experiencing this problem, and getting no usable tablets after the first 10 tries, drop the quest and re-pick up. DO NOT keep pounding your head against this wall. It's a bug if you're not getting the ancient tablet pieces.

Concerning the needed item for the fragments, was in my bags.....I've read quite a bit of the comments here and all are wonderful advice, however for the problem I had, I felt I should probably add to the list, just in case there were others who had a "derp" moment like me. lol
Once I was in "Naga" form, I finished a quest, then given this one I was still in the Naga form. I was unable to view my bags, and there was no "leave vehicle" or "exit" button for me to leave form to check my bags. Also, there was nothing in the "Quest" itself informing me there was something in my bags needed to do this with. I figured that I'd go do the quest and then I could just click up on top right to exit the form I was in, or I would leave it once the quest was turned in.
After farming some of the tablet fragments, I begin to realize that I'm not finding what I need to turn it in. I then ran into a shark and naturally it turned me back into my regular form, so I was able to then see my bags. I looked inside, and realized......naturally, there was an item in which had me turn the only 4 fragments into the one piece I needed. It would have saved me a bit of time farming I think, if I only realized I should check my bags for the thing to begin with.
At the time, there was nothing on Wowhead telling me this, so I felt I should let others know who were like me.

Once you have gotten 4 good tablets, simply remove the naga buff and use the items in your bag. You can turn back into a naga with the item in your bag.

Because this is NOT obvious: PIck up 4 Ancient Tablet Fragments. Combine them to be the Ancient Engravings of Neptulon. Use B (or whatever keystroke you have mapped to open your bags to combine the Ancient Tablet Fragments.

Be sure to hit B to open your bags frequently. Four engravings must be combined. I had the four in my bag, but wasted a lot of time getting illegible engravings.

PAAAAIIIINNNNFULLY sloooooow! Be sure you have no where to go for at least an hour whilst doing this quest. >:-(

I just finished this Quest.. after spending close to an hour of only getting Illegible Tablet Fragments (I have about 400) I abandoned the quest. I then re acquired the quest.. shortly after i looted 4 Ancient Tablet Fragments. You have to use the shortcut on your keyboard to open your bags (B is mine) and combine the four. Then you will complete the quest. I hope this saves you an hour and some frustration.

I'm ashamed to say I spent 2 days on this quest before coming over to wow head. Won't make that mistake again.
If only there had been something in the description that said, only 4 yellow fragments needed, or just combine these with
A tool in your bag. Makes me go ugh and pfft.

Oh boy, this is an annoying quest and really simple.

You hit your Key 4 the staff button when in naga form and boom you break it and collect the engravings.

Once you have 4 in your inventory you right click and boom done the quest.

Find the ancient elf ruins underwater and spam button 4.
It'll leads you to the end of this miserable quest.

Description
