As of 8926 this quest is bugged and the disk is destroyed when you try to turn the quest in.

quest isnt bugged, due to lag it takes a while but your disk is indeed destroyed and replaced by another one with "use:"
Now that you have the disk completed just use it near the spheres floating where the gnomes where, they look like ww2 water mines exept that hover, cant miss them :P

most likely a reference to the process of the same name in which the user digs or "mines" A games data in order to find out more about it.

This quest was bugged for me, I got to 6/7 the first time but no matter how many more data banks I used the disc on I couldn't get the last one.

I tried abandoning the quest and retaking it but now I can't even get past 0/7.

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

edit: Returned and did the quest a few days later no problems that time.

The respawning rate of Orbs is high enough to complete the quest faster.

most likely a reference to the task that various players like to do to this game to find hidden data within the game or view content that is still in the works and not released yet

The title of this quest is a reference to the method (datamining) through which various people acquire data from the game files to spoil the existence of new items before they have been seen in the game.

Don't bother killing the Guardians unless you need XP or Relics of Ulduar. They only drop Crooked Cogs. Don't forget you can call Brann with the Communicator. You don't need to fly back to Brann's cave like I did.

For those of you, who - like me - started the quest months ago, before mining the data, and don't know now, how to return them to the quest giver (and who's the quest giver in the first place): You need to use "Brann's Communicator" to summon Brann Bronzebeard.

True story, if you are a hunter and click on one of the databanks, Beast Lore acts as if it can be cast! But it can't. No titan databank companions for us...

If you're a hunter, and you're wracking your brain over why this quest item isn't working, I just figured out the answer.

Trailblazer talent. It reapplies itself every few seconds, and this breaks the channel from the quest item.

Fly over to Bouldercrag's Refuge to swap out talents real quick, and the quest proceeds smoothly.

The quest is bugged for me. I can collect the first round of data easily, but afterwards the disk's cast interrupts itself when I try to use it on all of the other databanks in the area. I've tried relogging, reloading, and abandoning and re-taking the quest, but the same thing happens.

I had the same problem many others have reported for this quest... using the disc would start an animation but then it would immediately finish, and nothing counted toward the quest.

First I tried flying out of the area and back in, same problem.

Second I tried logging out where I stood and then logging back in, same problem.

Finally I did both. I flew to the nearest innkeeper, logged out, logged back in, then flew back. Everything worked as soon as I did that.

If you have any kind of ongoing class effect activated when you do this quest, and you find that you can't actually activate the item, try cancelling out of that. Hunters with active Trailblazer or Priests in Shadowform are both confirmed to need to cancel these effects in order to use the quest item. It's also possible at least one Blood DK talent/passive will affect this.

If you are unable to complete the cast for the item, try cancelling any class effects or switching specs before you try anything more drastic or time-consuming.

I changed the Trailblazer talent. I left the area & returned. I have abandoned & re-accepted. I abandoned, exited the game, logged back on & re-accepted the quest.

It is just NOT working.

I did this today... as a Blood DK at lvl 120...

I took off all my gear, logged in logged out and changed my talents to
Heartbreaker
Consumption
Foul Bulwark
Mark of Blood
Wraith Walk
Death Pact
Bonestorm

this didnt work at all so I then with my naked being flew over to halls of stone zoned in and zoned out and it started working!

I didn't take off any of my items and disabled any of my ongoing buffs. I've just gotten close to the Databanks with my flying mount and then clicked on the skill, this method worked for me.

Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. No changing around class effects is gonna fix it. I just kept switching orbs until one would work, then moved onto another.

I'm a level70 lock doing my Loremaster as of patch 10.2.7. I had the same bug that everyone reports (animation stopping within a second or not starting at all and nothing counting towards goal). I tried reloading, flying out of the zone and back in and logging out and back in again. None of that worked. This is what I figured:

Even though the quest says to "data mine" at The Inventor's Library (the top terrace), the only orbs that worked for me were the ones down the steps (where the zone name above the minimap changes to Maker's Terrace.
I was mounting/auto dismounting between each orb. The only orb that I tried to clicked shilst not mounted didn't work, but worked again as soon as I mounted and let the item auto dismount me as soon as I clicked it

Data Mining

Use the Inventor's Disk to retrieve 7 pieces of Hidden Data from the Databanks.

Description

That disk you assembled... it's blank! That crafty Mimir must've hidden the information somewhere else. Look around the Inventor's Library; do you see any databanks there?

That might be what you need to do with the disk. Try using it near some of those databanks. Perhaps it's set to retrieve and store information from them. After you've tried your hand at that, contact me again and let me know what you've found. Meanwhile, I'll be trying to track down the other half of the archive key.
