I tried this today with another person at Azure Watch, and even though both of us were tossing water buckets like crazy onto one building, it seems that you might need more than one or two people to get this done. Two people alone can't seem to put the fires out fast enough.

You need to be there when the Headles Horseman comes to set the houses on fire, than you and about 10 to 15 others need to throw buckets of water at the fire. When you extinguished both the inn and the blacksmith (or any other building which might be on fire) the quest should be completed.

Try to throw buckets at the largest fires first and than on the smaller ones. If you get the small fires first the big fire will just create another small fire.

Probably the most effective tactic (especially if you don't have a huge number of people helping out) is to actually set up a bucket brigade. Since the water buckets can be thrown from player to player, you can have a chain of toons leading from the water tub to the buildings. That way you can get better coverage to the parts of the buildings that are farthest from your water supply.

I found the easiest place to do this is in Azure Watch - the Draenai starting area. The buildings aren't big, so its easy to aim. Two people can easily do it, if you start when the fires are small and each take your own building. The key is not to let them spread. Once that happens you need a large number of people to put them out.

It is interesting to note that you don't even have to participate actively in the quest. You can just stay in the vicinity and let all the lowly peons around you (yeah, other players) do the work, and it will validate the quest.

You don't have to throw a single bucket, you just need to have accepted the quest and then be present when the fires in any village are put out.

And yes, I mean ANY village. As an alliance, I was looking for the wickerman festival in Tirisfall Glades and went into Brill just about the time the horde put out the fires, and I got credit for it. Even better, I managed to grab the quest from the pumpkin before the hordies killed me.

But if you want this quest done, don't just stand there and wait for others to do it for you, participate in the event.

Did it solo today, at Azure Watch. I'm fairly sure that's the only place (for Alliance at least) where you could do it solo.

Just nuke the fires on the building right in front of the water bucket first, they go down within about a minute solo, then worry about the ones on the building on the other side of town. It'll take about 3 minutes, but if you're frantically running back and forth, you should be able to get it done.

Quest not starting for you?

There appears to be a timer (or it could be a bug) where the quest to start the whole thing (Let The Fires Come) isn't available to anyone.
Without this, the fires simply won't start, no matter how many times to accept it/abandon it/how many people there are, etc.

If this happens, just go to another town (Kharanos, Goldshire, Brill, etc) and it should be available. This happened to a group of us and we merely went to another one and it Let The Fires Come was available to start everything up.

It could be related to it 'just being completed' or it's a timer or a bug. You may have to travel a bit, but if you look around, you can definitely get it done.

Above bug still active this year, confirmed it from a GM. If you're waiting around for the horseman in Goldshire for a while, he's not coming. Head to another lowbie town such as Kharanos for the quest.

Edit: And abanodoning/retaking quest won't help. It's just a server side issue that he can't come there.

Just so you know this quest and "smash the pumpkin" can be completed while in a raid group. Very conveinient if your raid decides to put you on stand by.

This quest is driving me nuts (Elwynn). It takes cooperation, right? It's doesn't get any easier when some keep focusing on the front windows of the inn from the beginning; if the fires around aren't out or at least weak, the windows will catch fire again in about 0,5 seconds after they're out. And I've never seen these fires spread to other locations, so you can safely leave them alone until the other inn fires are out/under control.

None of the tips here are helping. The only thing that seems to help with this quest are just having a lot of people doing it. I keep following the advice here to no avail except there aren't enough people to do a bucket brigade.

Has anyone confirmed this year, that you have to put the fire out from the top down? Seems if you don't it just keeps throwing embers and starting them up faster than they can be put out? Is this whats happening or am I imagining it?

One way to encourage some cooperation is to drop a campfire near the range limit from the tub, and throw buckets at the campfire. Makes it much easier for people to know where to stand.

It also helps to use something like the following macro to let others know what you're doing:

A quest of classic illogical irritation, requiring roughly a dozen people to be in remote places, and preventing you from doing anything sensible, such as directly attacking the villain or unleashing such spells as typhoon that would actually extinguish a gigantic blaze. Enjoy tossing a tiny bucket over and over and over!

If only takes a few moments to say "some round back" "All on Inn" or "bucket chain" to help things if you see disorganisation. Enough people will cop on, and those moments will be better spent.

RE: Azure Watch fires

Azure Watch (Draenei starting village) version is easily soloable, but don't be too efficient - if you put out the fires too quickly, the Horseman will set fire to the inn, which will require a lot more running.

If you put out MOST of the fire on the first building (armory?), wait til he comes back for his second pass - he will relight the first building. Since this building is so close to the water source, you can put out the majority of the fire(s) without running. Just a couple more buckets in the back and you're done!

I read down below (thanks Lysdexia, on 10/20/2010!) that setting up a campfire as a go-to spot for bucket-passing is helpful. Problem is, F2P characters can't shout or whisper, and high-lvl's who can't see your text just run right by the campfire. SO HERE'S THE TRICK:

Start throwing buckets at the campfire. Throw TONS of them, and quickly! You want this to be NOTICED! You'll get the goofs who think you're trying to douse the campfire, but then 1 or 2 will catch on and start standing near it. Even if just to watch. Hit em with the buckets and soon enough word spreads (or see-it-do-it spreads too). Once you get folks coming there for buckets, if you're quick enough and have good aim (set it somewhere you can get a good camera angle), just 1 bucket-passer can feed 2-3 bucket-tossers. Reason is the tossers have to calculate where on the building to throw it, but you only have to hit them. The target is their FEET, btw.

SOME TIPS FOR QUICKNESS: You and the bucket-tossers can each only hold one bucket at a time. (Taurens don't get to show off their muscles here, sorry; nor mages bypass the whole tiny bucket operation-thing.) This means that if you feed a bucket-tosser who's already holding a bucket, it'll just splash at his feet. What a waste! Instead, activate the bucket (get the green glowy aiming circle), but don't toss it yet; hold your cursor over his feet, and click AS SOON AS he tosses his own bucket. This trick also works if folks aren't catching on to the campfire idea. Tossing buckets as them as they pause to throw their own helps the idea sink in, even if you miss, and especially if they come back to the watering hole and "can't pick up more of that item."

Also, if you're the one DOING THE RUNNING, more quickness tips for ya: Set yourself up so you only have to strafe between the watering hole and the place you stand for dousing the building. Zoom out enough to see your target, but also in enough so trees/etc. don't block your view. Strafe heads you directly left or right, with no forwards, backwards, or turning, so you can spend more time directing your aim and less time controlling your character. You also DON'T HAVE TO WAIT until you're at your target to activate the bucket (get the green glowy aiming circle); you can click that on the way over and be aiming before you even reach the toss-spot. With this strafing technique, if you're in an area where less folks are around (and therefore the fires spread less quickly, as this quest scales to players), you can easily solo the whole danged thing. Speed-buffs not required.

If you are on an imbalanced server without anyone helping you this quest can be completed in the opposite factions town. Pick up the quest in your own town as well as a bucket of water. Travel to the opposite factions town and wait for the event to begin. Land on a roof to throw the water bucket at a patch of fire and fly up again and wait for the fires to be put out by the opposite faction. The quest should now complete for you.

After the Headless Horseman has been killed you can also pick up the quest Smash the Pumpkin from the pumpkin on the ground. However, be prepared for max level guards appearing out of nowhere to attack you.

The quest finished and i had enough time to loot the pumpkin with another toon that was in my garrison . Or you can just leave them all in GS and log in and out. You only get the fire quest credit on the first one but the huge pumpkin on all that click it.

The more people there are, the harder the fires are to put out. Check inside the inn before the quest to see how many people are there, because some inns and villages are more popular than others (especially on an RP server, which often gets CRZ'd into Moon Guard).

I had this quest in my log from last year, and it carried over to this one. So there you go, looks like these quests can be turned in whenever lol.

Also, this year they changed up the interface, so the buckets appear in the fixed location on your screen. Kinda annoying if you want to set it to the hotbar

Okay, so I found out the big central button is called "Extra Action Button" so it can be keybound at least.

I made an account on wowhead specifically to comment on this quest because of how frustrated I have become with it. I haven't been able to confirm this, but in Legion it seems like the quest will scale with how many people are in the town. I've tried this both at Azure Watch and Kharanos, and it seems that if the fire spreads fast enough that it is containable by the amount of people in the town. In Azure Watch, the fire only affected one building, and it was right next to the central water bucket. I was handling it pretty decently, until I saw another player enter the town. Suddenly, the fire began to spread just fast enough that I could not handle it alone. Similar situation in Kharanos, only the inn lit on fire. I was playing my level 100, and using my flying mount, so the fire was dying down pretty quick. However, as soon as I see another player enter the town the fire became unmanageable. If you do try to solo this quest try to find a town that is absolutely empty. You want it to be a ghost town when you try and solo it. Again, not confirmed, but it seems like that's the case.

Don't bother putting out the small patches of fire. Put out the big fires. The big fires will occasionally "spawn" smaller fires that will grow into big ones if you're not fast enough.

It's probably best to stay on the ground rather than grabbing buckets and flying up. There's a good chance you'll miss the quest completion criteria AND the achievement.

Hi all

On This achievement The Savior of Hallow's End You need to extinguish the fire. I done it in Goldshire. Just wait to spown Headless Horseman after that fire will start you need to take it out ( i was throw water on back of buldings not many ppl are doing this is far :P ) When will be no fire Achi will pop up. But you can kill Headless Horseman He will come after fire finish. As well you can do Quest Stop the Fires! you can take it from Costumed Orphan Matron 43 65 " you don't need to do quest to do achi.

If the Horseman has been killed and his pumpkin head is being dropped, but the quest still is around, DO NOT pick it up. This creates a bugged out session, i.e. all spots being ablaze immediately and a WAY shorter timer (recognised by a lack of the second warning and going straight to "I'll soon retire").

This is a very hard quest to do, usually takes 3-4 attempts with 3-4 people, less attempts with more people. Everyone please use the in-game suggestion interface to ask for a fix for this quest.

Something like
- Reduce rate of fire spread by half
- Increase radius of splash of water buckets to cover more burned area
- Guards help out if no players are present.

If you pick up the quest (Horde) Stop the Fires!, Fire Training, Fire Training, Fire Training, (Alliance) Stop the Fires!, Fire Brigade Practice, Fire Brigade Practice, Fire Brigade Practice and complete the quest (Horde) Smash the Pumpkin (Alliance) Smash the Pumpkin without doing the put out the fires quest first, it will bug put out the fires making it incompletable even if you helped put fires out during the event. If you then abandon put out the fires and relog it should be available again. This leads me to believe that put out the fires was coded to be a "breadcrumb" quest to lead to the smash the pumpkin quest. Make sure you do not do smash the pumpkin BEFORE you do put out the fires or you will have to relog after abandoning to fix it. This is true as of patch 10.1.7.51754.
