I just can't seem to complete this quest. I must have been at it at least three hours and he just keeps shooting me down. I've tried everything, flying far behind, flying far infront, flying above and below - he just seems to get me one way or another.

Can anybody post some tips?

i was doing really well at this one, but the silly thing just disappeared when he got to the mines, i might have just been unlucky other then this i found dodging the bolts kinda easy, i assume (by reading the above comments) it gets harder.

dispite fustration ive found the full proof stradegy for this guy

k all u have to do is stay above him really far up but not to far then make sure ur straightend out and use left click to look down stay at that camera angel and steer left and right and go up when u need to just watch out where he is or u might go to high
there is one trouble point near the end where he takes a drop down near that dock looking thing with the 2 elite guards so folow him down with right mouse click camera angle then straighten out and go birds eye view again.
long as u stay directly above him no probs with the bolts.

I attempted this guy at least 10 times or so before completing it. The best advice I can give you is to learn his flying path. As long as you are not chasing him he's not going to dismount you. If you stay by his side and know his turns, you can just short cut him whenever he does. If you for fall behind and have to chase him, you are most likely screwed unless he is going to turn soon.

all the flying NPC's can be bugged, meaning they will be like shades or not be there at all, as of now, Mulverick is bugged often on Emerald dream, meaning, when he works, finish off the quest fast, I still stuck on this guy, a druid can do this much easier than other classes as it can just transform into flying form and continue when knocked off the mount, unfortunally, I'm not a druid:(

Just 1-shotted this on my friend's paladin, crusader aura completely trivializes it IMO. Didn't know his course and was still able to stay ahead of him through most of it.

This guy is a big pain in the butt.

What worked for me was: stay in front of him as he flies around to the mine at the start. Use the time he wastes there to get above him and then track him from above using the arrow keys, using X and Space to go up and down as required.

As mentioned above the only tricky bit was the dive over the cliff and then up the hill beside it. Get that bit right and you are home free.

What I did was I stayed pretty far above him at all times and didnt even have to worry about dodging lightning until he flies straight down by the wooden dock thing. I got very lucky here though, right as he approached the "airstrip" I got hit by the very last volley, and hit the ground. I immediately mounted back up and was able to complete it. Pretty shady, but it worked for me.

I had a lot of trouble with this quest until I saw some comments to try and fly above him. Also watching the video in this thread helps too. Knowing his path and flying above him seems almost crucial to doing this quest. Flying behind him and trying to dodge is tempting fate as the missiles he shoots are so random you are almost guaranteed to get hit by them.

The ONLY tricky part about flying above him is at the dock like people said, you have to be quick in following him down. Once I knew his complete path I completed it right away.

I have tried everything everyone has listed for this fight, and still cannot seem to complete it. He will either dissapear in mid-flight and auto fail or I will be hit by nothing and just randomly fall off.

My question is this: Do you really have to do this and the following captain in order to obtain a netherwing drake? or can you just continue w/ the dailys and call it even?

Just a warning about this quest:

After a few tries I'd finally gotten him back to the landing strip, but he takes so long to actually land and give you the quest complete-ness, that I was killed by the numerous Dragonmaw Riders I'd aggroed.

Don't really know a way around this other than maybe kill them beforehand (although they respawn pretty quick) or keep an eye out for them (which is hard when you're focussing on him, but unless you want to almost complete it only to be killed because he takes an age to land then it's probably necessary).

The missiles are easy to avoid, almost laughably so. However, in the middle of the flight, without warning, you will suddenly fail for apparently no reason. Blizzard's programming methods of determining the distances between two airborne objects are obviously flawed... at certain angles, I'm very close to him, but it thinks I'm far away.

Be careful at the end, he is doing a final loop over the landing strip. My quest failed because I thought he was landing so I stopped.

Geez, that was so damn hard! Tried about 25 times, 9/10 failing becuz i was too far away -.-. If u wanna luckily end this q don`t notice the skybreakers as they leave if u fly along with Mulverick and yes, best way to complete this q is to learn his way and be a lil bit in front of him BUT high in the sky (not too high tho). Also, when he goes up to the (flayer`s) ridge be rdy (better alrdy start) to climb down. That`s the spot where i failed several times as he flies fast. And as I said the skybreakers aren`t rly a big problem if u fly away with Mulverick.

Took me one whole week (playing 2h/day) to beat this guy. I tried to find all sources of information on how to win the race, some good ones I've found:

- AddOn ImprovedCamera: Increases limit of the Max Camera Distance slider in Interface Options to the very maximum possible (from 30 to 50).

- Turn off your UI: Press alt+Z to turn off your interface, so everything on the screen disappears and you can see Mulverick easier.

- Raid Mark him: Invite some guildmate or random guy to a party, so you can add a mark icon to his head. Personally I used the blue square.

- Buy a Riding Crop: If you're farming for your netherdrake, you surely have 60-100g to spend on a riding crop. It sucks that after you win this chain of quests you get a riding crop as a reward, but to beat mulverick and captain skyshatter you MUST have this, otherwise it gets close to impossible.

With the tips above, you can easily solo this guy. If you have friends, call them to be hit by his bolts instead of you, and a pally to give you crusader aura.

This guy is far the hardest of the 6 racers. If you can beat this guy, you can easily beat Skyshatter. Just fly high and avoid as many missles as possible. Another good tip is that if you get lost for like 1-2 seconds, follow his missle trail. I lost him the first time, but quickly recovered and almost nailed it on the first time. After another 3 attempts, I knew the route by heart. I completed after my 5th attempt. Also, he also dive around the transporting dock on netherwing ledge. Just make sure then that you stick close, but for the rest of the run you can fly high.

Don't give up on any of these races. The best way to do is to study their trails. It's much easier if you already know where you going.

This guy was very tricky, took me 11 tries. Personally I found marking him with an icon (While in a party) helped immensely as he will seem to disappear at times. Good luck.

I have completed this quest 3 times now, except that I haven't. At the very end he does a 180 before he lands, he picks up speed right before he does the 180 and he's managed to fly out of range there 3 times now.

But nothing is more fun than getting knocked off your mount behind a crystal formation not being able to move or mount up, and end up HS'ing back to Shattrah just to fly back and try again.

So, don't know if anyone noticed this, but both the Wing Commanders have names similar to the main duo in the movie Top Gun. Iceman (Ichman) and Maverick (Mulverick).

Obviously, Tom Cruise was the hero in that movie so the character based of the role he played must have a harder race, right? Of course maybe that's an incorrect assumption to make...

Winning strategy, after a lot of frustration:

- Fly high. His lightning bombs have a finite range - flying above will avoid 99% of the grief.

- Watch for the sudden turns. It is easy to loose sight of the target.

- The one place you can not fly high is at the transport dock. Fly parallel, just off to one side.

- His first approach to the finish line is not the finish. You will have to circle the airfield, during which time you're probabaly aggroing.

As with other races, taking off your gear saves repair costs. A riding crop is not required to complete the quest.

I have to agree - the best course of action is stay as much above him as is physically possible and still be counted as in the running, as well as dodging all his Sidewinder Lightning missiles. My suggestion is to try it a few times even if you don't succeed at first, that way you get a good handle of the route you take, which can also help ease the confusion that comes when he sometimes changes course to distract you. Even if I took a few tries it was always frustrating in a fun way.

This is the worst quest in the game. I hope the developers who came up with this quest get fired.

This quest is just not fun. Sometimes you get knocked down just for the hell of it. I have failed the quest at the very end within pissing distance of the landing strip twice.

That doesn't count the number of attempts over the past few days where I just got knocked off for no good reason.

The thing that worked for me was flying slightly to the left or right of his flight path as it helped me see the bombs and I could cut corners when necessary.

The other tip is to stay on the expected flight path if you lose him because when he doubles-back on you and throws a ton of bombs, he will pick up his original flight path.

There was no quest in the game that made me feel like I want to cancel my WoW account until I discovered "Dragonmaw Race: Wing Commander Mulverick".

Farming Nethercite Ore or Crystals is a better use of time than wasting even a single minute while waiting for this quest to begin.

If you don't know how to strafe on a mount by now this quest will teach you. I had to do this one 13 times before I got it. All I did was strafe in the other direction when he started launching his lightning bolts and tried to stay below his left wing. Once you get the gist of his flight path this ones not *as* annoying.

Also turning the UI off was a BIG help! (Thats ALT+Z for those who need to know how to turn the interface off and on)

Most of the time, the biggest problem for me was keeping in touch with him, not actually dodging the missiles, because he seems slightly faster than you.

What helps most here is learning his path by heart and actually flying in front of him. This way the missiles won't hit you, because they're fired in the other direction. Just be aware of those moments where he makes this lovely little stunts, because then the missiles will be fired to the front. You propably won't be able to be in front of him all the time, but make sure you take every possible shortcut available.

Just try to be between him and the point he's going to fly next, and you should be fine.

This is imho the most difficult of all the racing quests. I believe the following observations should make it easier:

My view is that the lighning bolts do not actually track you as some comments suggest.

Instead, what happens is that the lightning bolts expand in a circular way after they have been launched. It almost works like a circular "net" or "web" that increases in size as it goes on. If you get caught in the "net", you are dismounted.

As a countermeasure what you should do is this: Imagine a cone-shaped area behind Mulverick. This is the "danger zone".

So if you are very close to Mulverick, there is a smaller chance of being caught.
If you are further behind him, the area covered by the bolts are larger and you are in more danger.

He launches the lighning bolts more or less in your direction, but "circle of bolts" then expands the further it goes. This therefore creates the impression that the bolts actually do track you.

The strategy that ultimately worked best for me was this:

I flew right behind Mulverick (as close as I could) all of the time. Perhaps just a little to the side. Whenever I see a bolt, I hit spacebar and try to go "over" it. If you just keep spacebar in you should be safe. The closer you are to Mulverick, the easier to dodge the bolts this way.
What also works like a charm here is to cut his corners. If you are next to (or ahead of) Mulverick, you are safe. So if he turns, turn sharply into his turn and stay next to him.

Finally, you'll have to get to know his flight path in order to stay close. Most likely you'll end up doing the quest about 10 times to get the hang of his path, but if you persevere you'll get it. (Or just memorise it from youtube!) This dude has one loooong flight path.

(The most frustrating thing here is lag... even with a latency of 500-700ms you'll sometimes find that Mulverick suddenly "disappears" in front of you. If you don't know the flight path, this can be quite frustrating. Look for him right behind you if this happens. I think his "stunts" are sometimes because of small lag spikes rather than actual stunts?)

Took me three real tries to beat this. There were also two bad tries wherein:

1) I got aggro from one of the Dragonmaw riders while Mulv was taking off. What was I supposed to do, sit there and take a bunch of damage? I ran away.. pretty lame.

2) He despawned on me once. Just disappeared. Quest didn't fail, but obviously I had to restart.

A couple notes I made:

1) The major reason I didn't get this on my first try was because I tended to trail him from above, and at one point he goes to the Dragonmaw transporter platform and dives low... so he got out of my range and I failed. Not much I could have done there without pre-empting the dive, which I did next time.

2) I found the projectiles to be incredibly easy to avoid. Followed with my mouse and just tapped space (jump) whenever he fired them... they'd miss every time. I ended up tapping space a lot anyways to ensure that I didn't overtake him.

3) When Mulv (or any of the riders) suddenly loop back and then forward in one direction, this is something of a bug. It's obvious that Blizzard coded the encounter so that the riders are meant to hit invisible checkpoints, but for whatever reasons this doesn't always happen. When a rider misses one of these points, he quickly loops back and then forward again to go through it. This can cause confusion and lead to you getting hit or falling behind, but it won't happen 100% of the time, and if nothing else you can curse Blizzard. Or as someone else pointed out above, this could be the result of client-side lag. In any case, it's really not part of his intended route.

What makes this quest really annoying are the patting skybreakers that pose a problem if you run into them often. When I reached the runway, I found myself tanking 2 skybreakers, periodically dropping 2k aimed shots on me. BTW, when mulv reaches the runway, he flies at the same speed as he did taking off. So ya, I was there for quite a while.

Contrary to the popular strategy, i just stayed Low and to one side, and then it is very easy to see the bolts coming; except the part where he goes along the ground. In the previous races I just stayed high and it was easy, but here i always got hit when i was right above him, but staying low they still seemed to be shot upwards, and i almost never got hit. I only ever lost if i got out of sight, or didnt know his flight path very well, so it was just a matter of learning his turns.

A Parachute cloak is HIGHLY recommended for these quests, the engineering one is perfect since it only has 30 seconds cooldown, and will save your butt, but most likely your gold.

the only thing you need to do, is wear your cloak, and move the icon to a hotkey, take will help you react faster when you are falling, rather than clicking on the icon in your inventory.

Don't worry about the skybreakers, you could have one on you the whole time and nt die as long as you have over 8K health... Staying right behind him is a bad plan because they DO track you to an extent.... the best way really is to fly high, but you will be amazed at how close you have to be to stay in "range"... Once I figured out that staying high was the key I lost multiple times just because I would get out of the tiny range

I tried strafing and dodging and everything else. I'm even a Druid, so I had Swift Flight Form! It was still hard. Flying above him is by far the best way. You avoid his bolts 99.9% of the time and can see his every move. Good luck to everyone attempting this quest! It's definitely a challenge!

Hardest quest I have ever done. Here are some tips:

- Turn your maximum zoom distance up and zoom out all the way
- Turn off your UI (alt+z by default)
- Predict his moves
- Cut him off at corners
- Fly to the side of him and strafe if possible
- Don't give up if you get knocked down, remount

I actually got knocked off my mount after the dock and had 10% health left upon landing. I thought I failed but remounted and was able to follow him. I suffered 3 durahits (no room in bags for my gear) and intense frustration doing this quest. Be patient and you will succeed.

This quest was really tough, but I completed it on my 5th run, 4th technically, since I thought you could wait at the end of the runway before he got there, apparently not. The last time I got really lucky, I aggroed one of those hostile Dragonmaw flying and they killed me just as we both landed. Thankfully I completed the quest.

Flying above him seems to work the best, use the space bar when he goes up and X when he goes down, move around a LOT.

Captain Skyshatter is really hard :(

As a hunter I used track humanoid. Attempted 2 times. First time was fine till there were 3 green dots and didn't know which to follow and lost him. Second time, I got hit by the thing he shoots at you. Using Track Humanoid made it easier. You just follow the green dot that going at that fast speed.

Do not rely on the graphics to help you here. The dismount effects frequently do not coincide with the big crackly balls.

On talking to a Blizzard GM about this, I was told this is a known issue and will be fixed at some point in the nebulous future; in the meantime, the best strategy I have found is simply to stay about ten yards behind, above and right of him at all times.

You can literally just fly through the mass of electric rings with this method without worrying about getting dismounted. Now all you have to do is keep up with him. :)

-Anyone else notice that sometimes his electric attacks hit himself?

I easily spent a little over two hours and a half on this guy. It took me a lot of attempts, many of them failed because I was too far away or he managed to hit me with a homing spark. The method I found that worked for me really well was just staying directly above him, with my camera directly pointing down. Space bar and X worked wonders, but after a little over a dozen times I finally managed it.

All advice I can give about him is to stay above him, except at the ramp where are two ascendants he will swoop down fast so you have to be at same distance as him or you will lose.

And noggenfogger also help alot.

It took me about 1 hour to beat him...

Normal
At first I tried staying behind him, that is the worst thing to do when facing Mulverick
cause of the lightning are many and they track you, but not for long before they exlode.

Then I tried staying on top and beside of him that worked rather well,
although when Mulv made a turn it all went to hell :S

One Step Ahead
Then after like 10 attempts I tried flying in front of him, with that tactic it only took me 2 attempts
to beat him but it requires you to know his flight route if you're gonna try that one, and another thing
sometimes he just stops in the air, goes back a few yards and then continues on the normal route so
keep an eye out for when he does that. I had to turn my camera back and forth like a 100 times to
fly in front of him.

Seems like in 2.4.3 this part of the quest is broken. On last half of the flight mulveric simply dissapears.

I was doing this as paladin, so i had crusader aura to give extra edge for the trip. It never was problem to stay close to him( hell i was flying around him in circles -.- ), but every single time on same damn spot he just dissapears.

My range? I had pressed shift + V to get name boxes appearing at close distance( what ever it may be... within 15 yards? ) yet he still dissapeared on 3 differend tries on same spot.

Quiet depressing, though i didnt need the q reward, other than reputation.

Edit: Latency was 150 - 180. Cant blame on that either.

Finally managed to kill him today, got a new computer and i could really ramp up the viewing distance. I did it 20 times in a row and really got to learn his flightpath so it became a bit easier.

Done it without riding speed enchants whatsoever, hope i can manage to win skyshatter withouth as well!

I had a lot of trouble with this guy. Whether it was that I was just unlucky or I made a wrong move, I don't know.
But after about 125 tries, for 3-4 hours I downed him.

Tips that really worked for me was drinking Noggenfogger Elixir until you are buffed with being smaller.
I also stayed fairly far above him as well, but not behind him.
Try to cut corners whenever possible.

This race is pretty long (over 4 minutes) so there is a lot of time to make a mistake.
Just make sure to go down with him when he is by the dock, and fly back up as soon as he does.

He does circle the ramp a few times so try to avoid skybreakers. Don't land until he does and starts moving a lot slower (like he did before he took off).

This was actually the toughest race for me (more so than Skyshatter).

after 47 attempts, I find myself ripping the hair from my skull, and eating it.
I even succeeeded on attempt #32 (the wild attept) as I like to call it, but the quest
bugged ofcoarse and did not show as "completed" but "failed", been waiting hours on end
for a GM reply to my query, don't think h/she will allow me the quest completion though as I forgot to screenshot it and there is no real proof apart from my friend who has helped me through it, I have been attempting it since, and will be starting attempt #47 (the bold attempt) very soon.

Wondering if anyone else is noticing he likes to turn a quick (more like instant) 180 as if he missed a checkpoint, then turn another 180 all while chucking lightning at you the whole time. This happened 3 times in one run.

I forgot to add, don't wait at the end of the runway after accepting the quest. Apparently the range check applies while he is on the ground too!

A few tips from a Paladin:

Fly above him as far as you can. This will make most of his bolts completely useless.
Hit Shift+V to turn on allied health bars. If you can see his health bar, you need to be higher.
Put some symbol on him.
He doubled back for a second three times when I raced him, and did a sort of 360 in midair while throwing 3-4 times. Does anyone know if these are random?
If you DO fly high, make sure you drop down at the little skydock by the two Ascendants. Otherwise you may lose him when he dives.
Crusader Aura is a godsend.

Race: A contest between people, animals, vehicles, etc. where the goal is to be the first to reach some objective. Several horses run in a horse race, and the first one to reach the finishing post wins; in an arms race several countries each try to acquire more powerful weapons than any other.

First attempt with Noggenfogger shrink: win. Stay above him and relatively distant. Make sure you know when he's going to wig out in place or suddenly dive low. Still, to hell with this dude.

The only thing I want to add to all of this is to find shortcuts when you can. He seems to fly slightly faster than the player and if you follow his path exactly you'll eventually lose him. Considering the best strategy is to stay on top of him, that gives you even less distance ahead you can let him get. So when he makes a turn, make a sharper turn so you can make up some distance. Of course, this absolutely requires that you know his path, because he most certainly doesn't always go the way you might expect him to.

And a little encouragement...this is tough, you're gonna fail, it's okay. You're more than welcome to skip it, it's certainly not necessary. So just keep at it, don't get frustrated, and if you still don't feel you can do it, let it go. I most certainly wouldn't suggest trying it 100 times. It ain't worth it.

One of the hardest quests out there, in my opinion. Did it at least 10 times, and the most frustrating part is for sure the wait... It's long enough for me to read through all the tips on this page. Anyways, this is what worked:

- LEARN HIS PATH. Whether by watching a video a few times or trying and failing at the quest a bit, you'll soon get the feel for where he is going.
- Full screen, Use the mouse to adjust your camera down, max zoom, use x to go down, space to go up, arrow keys to steer
- BEST BIT: every time he sends out his zappers, HIT THE SPACEBAR. Works like a charm. Just be sure not to go too high; in between bolts hit the x key to go down a bit.

Trial and error, and as he says "Blood, sweat and tears".

WOW... so I gave it like 15 tries before I finally am able to stick with him to the landing strip (right before he flies by the tower), and as he's slowing down........ BAM! my internet dies and I get dc'd. Pwnt, right? Well a few minutes later I get back online to read, " this realm is going down for scheduled maintanence. Realm Shutdown 3:00".

This is where I head-desk.

Something I've found to help is to go into your video settings and put view distance max. If your computer can handle it, it helps (imo).

best if u know his flight path

i did it enough e... (no... i dont want to say easy, cuz i spent 2 days on this damned quest) ... but when u know where to be carefull , where he will fly up / down, then its doable.

i hide my UI (default its i thing Alt+z)
instead of scrolling the camera as far as possible, i scrolled it to the 1st person view, so i didnt saw my character = thats realy important, cuz u can see so where ur target is = thats important :)
turned my camera completly above my character (with holding down the right mouse button), so i was looking straight down
but now comes the difference from the other posts here...
instead of flying forward, i was flying to SIDE, while i was always directly above the quest npc while flying, so i looked at him from above.
i was turning by holding down the right mouse button
and when i needed to go closer down to him i just pressed the Forward button, and again when i needed to fly higher, then i just hold´ down Jump, till i was in optimal distance from him.

seems complicated by reading it, but if u got that system what i used u realize its realy simple
(once to try > x time read ; practice > theory ;-) )

i didnt dodged even once a missile, i just fly forward (strafed) the whole time, just keep ur eyes on him and watchout if he stops and starts to shoot plenty of shots at u = that means u need to go back, he leads the way after all ;)

also recapitulation:
1st person view
look down
move sidewards (strafe)
to turn (minic the quest npc turnings) hold down the right mouse button the whole time
jump if u need to go up
press Forward button if u need to go down

and one very important thing:
STAY by the quest NPC till the total end, even if he stops firing at you and lands, till you dont get the Quest Complete msg!

else even after successfull flight u will get Failed msg, just as me... i thought i kill someone in the moment...

Anyway, for those who cannot reliably keep ahead of him - or are 80, like me, so riding crops are gone - here's a textual form of his path. He's going to keep reliably turning either left or right - so by staying on the inner lane you're technically faster than him.

1. Starting U-turn.
Path: onto the strip and back over it, towards the floating rock ahead.
Tip: Everyone knows what to do - just stay ahead.
Checkpoint: Somewhere before the rock...

2. Tour of the island.
Path: He'll take a sharp turn left - and then circle the island, up until the landing dock.
Tip: The path is counterclockwise: during that stage stay on his LEFT side.
Checkpoint: Descending from the mountain next to the dock.

3. Through-and-over.
Path: He'll fly south into a crystal-jagged canyon, across the middle of the island, high over the base and the strip, and further take a right turn to climb over yet another mountain.
Tip: The path is clockwise - stay on his RIGHT, and watch out for the crystals limiting your movement.
Checkpoint: Right as he starts climbing the mountain after the airstrip.

4. Mid-air loop.
Path: After passing the mountain summit left-side, he'll do a 15-second horizontal loop in the air.
Tip: Stay on his LEFT, which means hardly moving at all, as his loop is slightly tight. Just shift up and down, I guess.
Checkpoint: After a full turnabout, he'll return to the island. Be ahead of him.

5. Home run!
Path: He'll climb the ridge and follow it west (along the edge) and end up at the dead bird near the airstrip's outward end, then take a left turn and he's down.
Tip: Stay to his LEFT, in other words: inland.

Very long flight....
I got it on the fifth or so try by moving down at an angle with the mouse and using the spacebar to dodge his attacks. I also strafed with the arrow key (left mostly) because both mouse buttons pressed + arrow key = strafe.
easier than using WASD imho.

After failing this quest at least 10 times, I finally found the easiest way - fly below him.

Even with my UI off, camera zoomed in, and strafing like crazy he kept despawning at random during the race (when I had been sure I was close enough). I had been flying above him and dodging his bolts with relative ease, although I did get hit twice. As soon as I started to fly under him I had absolutely no problems avoiding the bolts, and was able to stay even closer to him as to avoid despawning. I got it on my first try using this method, and I highly recommend it if you're having trouble any other way.

There is little use in bothering to do this quest anymore. The rewards are 1500 rep, a +10% mount speed whip and some gold.

However this quest will most likely take so much time that looking for eggs will give more rep, you repair bill will be larger than the money and the whip is worthless for anyone over level 70.

This quest is horrible and annoying. But if you like a challenge and feel lucky by all means try it.

Fun fact: It is possible to be dismounted and still complete the quest.
I got hit early in the race, but was close to the ground. I remounted as soon as I hit land and since I had not recieved a fail message, I continued to race. Happened to be on the attempt that I finally won!

This guy took me 4 tries.

The whole race, from the time you accept from the time he stops flying, is 5 minutes. There is a 1 minute 20 second time at the beginning when he gets to the end of the strip, but the other 4 minutes 40 seconds is the race.

My tip for this guy, and all the others, is, whenever possible, stay in front of them a little. They never shoot their abilities in front of them, only behind them, this one being the worst ability by far (from what I've done). Make sure not to go too far ahead because you may fail the quest. Also, if you are in front of them, they tend to do more random stops to throw you off so make sure to be watching behind you.

well it's been a long time since someone commented here. I did this with 5-6 attempts and I knew the flightpath only for 15-20 seconds from the start when I finished this quest.
3 necessary rules to be successful here are:
1) place a raid mark on him, the orange is the best. this really helps you, when he's behind obstacles and it was about 8-10 times when I did this quest.
2) cut corners, always.
3) strafe as much as you can, because his bolts actually go straight at your position after 1-2 seconds of firing.

I had more fun getting rocked by this guy countless times, then I have in almost all the other "innovative" quests combined.
I also respect his ability to fly like a pro. For these, I nominate Wing Commander Mulverick as the new King of Everything.

Just finally completed this quest after numerous tries. The Easiest way to get this done is to fly ABOVE him, and follow him with the camera pointed down. I beat him on my second try, and was very happy about it. Good luck!

There's no easy way to do this and it's almost impossible to explain the route he takes, but here are my recommendations...

1) Remove all your armor. It's not going to do you any good in the air anyways and your repair bill will be monstrous by the time you finish. This quest is no easier for an 80 than a 77.

2) Switch to first person view and try to fly above him pointing the camera angle directly downward. You will see that this is impossible to maintain as this is a very complicated flightpath and he will stall a lot just to mess with your mind.

3) Stay far enough away to avoid the fray, but close enough not to lose him (not easy).

4) Memorize the path as best you can. You will have plenty of chances during your failures.

5) IMPORTANT: At times he will cut back and do loops to lose you. If you lose sight of him just keep veering the same direction as you were going before he started playing games, you will probably find him again.

6) Stall when he stalls, but not completely, otherwise you'll get whacked by the fireballs.

7) There are two extremely frustrating parts to this, one where he dives far below the edge of the cliff and zooms immediately upward. Keep your distance, but don't lose him. The other part that will drive you nuts is when your finally reach the runway and think you're done, he'll cut back two or three more times and you'll almost always lose him, so just hold your breath and hover over the center of the runway.

Like I said, extremely difficult and hard to explain but if / when your complete this you will really have accomplished something. Best of luck!

OK. The others before this were a piece of @#$% tbh. This is the one that sorts out the men from the boys

First things first. You are NOT gonna complete this on your first go, due to the extreme length of the race, a touch over 4 minutes from when he actually begins to fly, until its end, and given the sheer complexity of his often sudden manouvers (such as changing direction maybe 3 times in as much seconds) that is way too long a time to be able to do this guy without a LOT of practice getting to know his flight path.
Which is crucial, since the only way to go this quest is in first person perspective and at a v high altitude, as after he dive bombs towards the end, he can climb a heck of a lot faster than you can, and it is impossible to see where he goes.
Getting to know the path is also crucial because only then will you know where you can actually catch him up (and get into a better vertical position) by cutting corners around his path.

I would recommend turning your stopwatch function on too, so that you will be aware just how close you are to finishing.

As for control, it is way easier to use the default aswd keys for manouvering and holding down your mouse buttons at the same time.

Also needed is a slight bit of luck, as beyond 3 mins his manouvers and his bombs become more extreme, and you will invaiably lose him for a second or two, which is where getting to know that flight path comes in v handy.

My husband recommended I time this so I could see how close I was each time. The race itself took 4 minutes, not counting the 1 min 20 sec it took for him to walk down the landing strip, and about 20 sec it took for him to glide in at the end. So after one hour of doing this over and over, I got dismounted on the landing strip right as the race was ending and mounted up again asap just to realize that he was gliding in and I hadn't failed the quest after all! ^_^ Finally!

I do suggest staying above and a bit to one side of him, and just hitting space bar when he shoots at you. He tended to stun himself with his lightning, allowing me to catch up and reposition occasionally. Also, flying over some of the crystal groupings instead of through cuts down on time, and reduces the chance of getting stuck on protuberances.

Hide your interface, learn his route, stay in front of him at all times, and be rdy for a lot of tries! Good Luck!
And remember: When he U-turns he always turns back, so just stay in front of him of him and be careful not to get to far ahead when he does this.

Hard quest, but doable. Practice makes perfect I found.

His bolts are easily avoidable just zigzag from right to left and up a bit but note that too far from him fails the quest.

Following him might be the hardest bit about this quest. It's straightforward at times but once or twice he doubles back and forward quickly, so if you don't have a straight eye on him, you could lose him = quest failed.

I also found him to stop at the last bolt for a few seconds, then continue on. Careful of this as well.

When he gets the place where 2 Dragonmaw Ascendants are standing guard he will do quick turn down the cliff and suddenly turn up, and go around the crystal. Stay tight with him at this point. Easily miss-able.

Got him after my 10th time. >.>

I completed this first try. What I did was fly a little bit behind him and off to the side. It makes it much easier to dodge his lightning (although I did take a few of them). Also, instead of following him directly, I would try to predict his path. 9/10 times I was right. This could probably be just luck, but if you have been practicing your prediction since the first race, it will give you an idea on where he may go. If you are successful and begin to see him bank, you can easily cut the corner and shave off some distance.

I am not sure if this is the way the quest was supposed to be, but when I completed his circuit it glitched and I had to follow him through another full circuit. Alas, I still completed it though with no riding crop or anything, just a normal 280% epic mount.

Also, I turned of my UI has it helped decrease my screen lag. I did not try the first-person zoom, but that may not help as much if you are using my technique by flying beside/behind and predicting the path.

By far the worst part about trying to complete this quest is the ridiculous "intro sequence" that clocks in at nearly two minutes long before every attempt as Mulverick slooooooowly moves down the entire runway at walking speed. It would have been one thing if Oldie or Trope had taken so long to set up, but for a quest you're likely to have to try more than once before completing, sitting through Mulverick's painfully slow trot again every time you fail is beyond tedious.

Also, flying ahead of him and knowing the route doesn't always work - he has a tendency to suddenly jerk around in the opposite direction for a second or two if you get too far in front, which will throw you far enough ahead to put you out of "following range" and cause you to fail the quest. If that doesn't happen, he also sometimes hits HIMSELF with his damnable lightning, which causes the same result. In other words, you have to not just win but avoid doing too well or he'll throw you off.

Top that off with having to wait for him to respawn by the runway every time you fail...

This quest is positively infuriating. :|

P.S. - Just tried again using the first-person strafing technique, and guess what? I was doing great, I was right before the end... and then I actually got knocked off my mount. RAAAAAAAAGE.

I have just completed this after about 10 attempts. The main reason I failed was (like a lot of people have said) he flies really fast, but also because he stops randomly and turns in a ball of light while shooting at you. These stops are never in the same place and sometimes he seems to change direction slightly to throw you off, this completely messed me up for a while until I was aware that it happened and kept an eye out for it.

My advice as a druid is make sure you have flight form on your action bar and turn the UI off using Alt Z (as alot of people have said), try and keep up with him and dodge the lightning by using your space bar to rise away from him, then swooping in close to him with your mouse. Learning his route by failing over and over is soul destroying but necessary imo, you need to get the route etched on your mind so you can cut corners every now and then to catch him up.

Between him hitting himself with his own lightning !@#$ which stuns him, him simply disappearing off the screen and automatically failing the quest for you, him hitting you with 3 lightnings in a row which seems to disable your mount entirely even though it shouldn't anymore, and just how long this quest takes to do because of all these stupid faults with it, this is easily one of the most needlessly frustrating quests in the game.

My advice to anyone trying it would be to keep attempting it over a course of days instead of instantly retrying it, because it's not worth how angry you're going to get over this.

I don't see what makes this so hard.

Got it on my second try, without flight form (I'm a druid). All you have to do is strafe left and right to avoid the bolts, and avoid getting too far behind him. Cut corners when you can (I think he goes 10% slower than you) and it should be easy peasy.

But then again, playing Mario Kart and Starfox every day as a little kid might have helped my racing skills.

Not sure if it was bugged but when I tried it using flight form the projectiles would dismount me. So druids use an actual mount and you won't get dismounted.

Second attempt I didnt do anything special besides not suck. I did get confused near the end in terms of what determined the end of the race.

Too much over analyzing imo, just fly and cut corners dodge bolts, win.

Did it after 3-4 times failing to keep up with him.

The trick is to anticipate his path (you don't have to memorize it) and make changes to always stay near him (cut a corner, move in front of him)..if you manage to do this, he will get caught from time to time in his own net; this will make him freeze mid-air for about 1-2 sec and give you a chance to catch up.

(It also helps if you listen to some good punk rock while doing this quest - my suggestion in The Offspring :P )

He seems most likely out of all of the racers to hit himself with his own bolts, and will (now) be stunned for longer then a player would hit by the same bolts. If you keep going you will fail.

Talk about NPCs cheating!

Flying mounts seem buggy currently in the netherwing ledge area. I can't dismount and STAY dismounted unless I move indoors; it just re-mounts me automatically even if I'm fighting, casting, mining, whatever. This also seems sort of advantageous though, as getting hit by the race opponents doesn't ALWAYS knock me off my mount, just makes me stop in mid-air briefly. That said, Mulv's flight is still frustrating as heck.

Since the new patch, I wanted to add some additional information that might be considered useful, as this quest is certainly trying on the patience factor. I must have spent at least an hour, & for me if I could have read some info on the end of the race, I think I would have had it finished in two tries probably, instead of 5/6.

Basically, for me keeping up with him wasn't always a problem, though there are times he can get away from you if you haven't really learned his pattern, but it's not always necessary to learn it as long as you keep up. As other posters said, if you fly either above him or to the side, the probability of him hitting you with his massive and out-spread lightening bolts is unlikely, in most of my times flying with him he's only hit me once or twice, and sometimes not at all, and even though it stuns you, you can usually catch back up with him.

The only real problem, seems to be when he dips below the two elites at the edge of the netherwing ledge--he dips down, then hangs a sharp right trying to confuse you, then he'll go to the right around a small out-cropped mountain crystal, fly up it a little, then he'll turn right around it, so keep that in mind (he likes to be erratic, but there is still a patterned method to his chaos, which is both annoying and helpful in learning his "dirty tricks" as I call them).

Most of the other users have already posted about this part, the lightening and keeping up with him, but no one posted the most obvious frustration, which is at the end, he acts like he's going in for a landing like the previous 4, but he doesn't stop on the pad, keep up with him and follow him around the watch-tower.Then he'll go right in a circle around it, try to throw a few lightening bolts at you near the end, then he'll stop right above and kind of low to the end of the track, but make sure you still keep him in your site, but also keep a little distance on him, so you can see him on the end of the track.

Several times while trying to complete this I'll lose track of him when he was hovering, instead of looking his direction and then he'll just want you to SLOWLY follow him back to the start of the pad, then you'll complete it. This reminds me of Ockham's razor, that the simplest solution is sometimes the best .

Most of the time I failed because I was actually thinking he took off in another direction, when he was there hovering the whole time. So, basically he seems to trick you there when in reality he's not, and perhaps it's another "dirty trick" because we were expecting way too much by the time the end of the race draws near .

Oh, and the last guy you fight, he's not really as tough as Mulverick, because his mount is slightly or alot slower than Mulverick I think, but he does throw out some big fireballs, I think about 5/6 each time, but they are usually big enough to avoid, though once somehow he got away from me and I failed and had to restart, but as I recall I only fly with him twice before completing, the only big snag is that a few times the leader will sort of slowly zig-zag trying to lose you, he flies slow enough that usually you can see where he goes, but just keep that in mind. By far, to me, much easier a flight that Mul.

The nice thing if you finish that quest is that you get a personal achievement for it, which I don't know, makes you feel kind of special, since not alot of people take their time for the older mounts these days (personally I think the netherdrakes look the coolest, I think mostly because of their color, and how aerodynamic they seem, yes they are a little clunky, but no worse than the netheray you can get from Shatari Skyguard, (somehow they seem more maneuverable), & they aren't as bulky as a drake. They seem to have good sharp turning abilities, but I think that just depends on who flies it.

You do get a whip, but if you are level 80, it won't give you a speed increase, which is very frustrating considering all the rep work you do for this quest, they should have made it scale, would have been nice. You also get another "badge" trinket, which calls forth a netherwing helper for the cooldown is 10 minutes, not a bad little trinket, though the stamina it gives you for 80 or above would be trivial at best.

By the time you do this quest you should be in the middle or tail-end of honor reputation, for me it put me exactly at revered, since I only needed about 3000 rep to get there. So, now I have the long grind of getting from revered to exhaulted, which will take awhile b/c the rep gains are usually a little less once you hit revered, like some of the quests that used to give you 500, only gives you 350, except the quest to kill the 20 guys in Nagrand, that still gives you 500 & it's repeatable, so don't miss that one, also if you can managed to get 4 netherwing eggs, that's about 1000 rep, some days I manage to get 6, so that would be about 1500, but it kind of depends on if you're the only one in the mine, and if you have AOE to help clear the mine (unfortunately I don't, & I normally don't have a friend to help me clear the mine, but that's not a huge heal, the eggs seem random, but one time I found one in the back, & kept finding on in the next room I visited as I made a circle, but that almost never happens, after I found the 4th one, I had trouble finding another, so I just decided to leave for the day).

I hope some of this info helped, it may have repeated a few things, but in particular I wanted to remind others of the Mulverick guy, certainly one of the most frustrating quests, I think the only one just as frustrating was the crystal tuning in blade's edge, which I did eventually figure it out, but I had a memorization cheating technique which I will explain if I can find the title of that quest I will try to post information about it. And, also this one quest in Netherstorm about connecting the laser lines (seemed like a kind of like that connect four board game from a long time ago, but I don't remember how I solved that one, it was just trial and error and memorizing.

Sorry for my long post, but I hardly post & this was one of the few quests that reading up a few strategies can help give you alternatives. I sure wish I had known about the ending when I first attempted my try-outs.

This isn't as hard as some of the people on here are saying (two days?). I did it on the first try, after reading a few comments for tips. It is tedious and much longer path than the previous ones. Its easier to avoid the electricity the closer you are too him, so cut corners and do everything you can to keep on his ass.

A small warning to WoW players with epilepsy: the lightning this guy shoots behind him is really, really sparkly. If the quest gives you trouble you might want to have someone else grab the mouse for a second, or if all else fails abandon it. Safety first!

Hard for me only because it'd bug out on me. I'd be right behind him where I could essentially "touch" him. Well more so right above. And it told me I failed for no reason and I've been further away from him. It was at the spot where the little dock is and he dives into the abyss a little bit.

Godamit - this quest took me 3 days at about 20 tries per day. The only hints I can give are:
- memorise the first half of the course, then it is easy to stay slightly ahead of him.
- if you are a druid, make sure Swift Flight Form is bound to a key you can reach quickly, so that if you are struck by lightening, you can quickly remount and continue following (I got struck 3 times on my winning flight, and remounted successfully).
- on my winning turn someone followed me for 75% of the course (was this blizzard feeling sorry for me and providing a bot to assist). It could be that if you have someone following you too, half the lightening bolts will be directed to that person.
- stay ahead of him during the first half of the course, then just follow him and vary what side you fly on after ever bolt
- memorise a couple of corners he takes, so you can cut corners to catch up with him if needed
Hope you get this quest done faster than I did.

Finally got this one done of my druid. Had various problems along the way. First I couldn't keep up with him because I was dodging everything, then when I changed tactics to stay closer I got hit came out of swift flight form dropped and lost him.
In the end I did this ;
1) As a druid flight form is not the way to go, get a flying mount and use that. This way if you do get hit you're just slowed for a split second. If you're in flight form you free fall until you get back into flight form.
2) Get into first person mode, much easier to spot him
3) Mark him so you know exactly where he is.
4). Stay above him but in terms of horizontal position keep as close as possible. Flying this way I did get hit a couple of times but was able to keep on him.
5) Watch out for the drop when he gets to the dock.
6) Last but not least he's maverick so will circle the towers at the end, he pretends he's going to land but doesn't.
This way may not work for everyone but it certainly did for me, I had no issues with the UI getting in the way, everything was fine once I put it into first person mode.

The most helpful suggestions here IMO are the alt-Z and scroll in to first-person
view while following. You don't need to strafe, you don't need to stay
high up, you don't have to memorize the path. The lightning may seek you,
but it is possible to dodge it. Once I thought it knocked me off my mount
but I may have accidentally hit my mount with the mouse key. Its helpful
when you can avoid his lightning bec it knocks you back, slows you
briefly and makes it hard to see so if he suddenly zags you may
lose him in a screen of mostly white. The hardest part is near the end
when he reaches the dock with the 2 elites, he dives down, turns right,
then rises again--and continues to rise over a large crystal, then
dives down toward the ground. This is where he shakes people the
most. With the help of alt-Z and first-person view I was able to
complete it in reasonable time.

Hahaahaha I beat this one on the first try. Trick is to be at the very start, HIIIIIIGH above him. So that the bolts can't even get near you, but look down so that when you move you can see him and move in the same direction. It was easy.

I'm not sure if Blizzard nerfed these quests or not, but all of the dragonmaw race quests seemed much easier than the first time I did them prior to Cataclysm and patch 4.2. Perhaps my flying skills have improved...I'm sure it helps that I have done them before and knew what to expect. Has anyone one else completed these recently and noticed they were considerably easier? Not that I'm complaining! I highly recommend watching Youtube videos if this is your first time around. The ones that others have posted were very helpful.

This quest isn't as hard as is said, as long as you have had practice flying through rings, whilst controlling a dragon (Spyro FTW).

If you are doing these quests at 85, the hardest part is staying with the flyer. At 85, we are flying faster then the quest originally intended if you did it 'on level'. The lightning he throws is even helpful as it's a knockback and helps you keep him in sight better.

You don't have to worry about taking any damage, on all the flight quests I took no damage, and you don't have to worry about aggro from the skybreakers or anything on the ground.

For all the flight quests, just keep above the flyer and most importantly, keep an eye on them!. You have to hang back flying wise on purpose so you don't over take them and lose them. Don't worry about strategy or anything else. Just worry about hanging back and keeping them in sight without losing them and you will complete this series with no problems.

If you've failed the quest after what seems like a ridiculously long run, go back and try agin immediately. I failed on my fourth circuit, went out again right away, and only had to do one circuit before it was completed. Happened to me this way with Skyshatter as well. Seems like all the others were two circuits to complete.

Take some time to memorize his flight pattern. (It might take a couple of test flights.) Then fly next to him or slightly ahead of him. He can not hit you when you are flying as his wingman.

Mulverick is a SOB and is the hardest quest I've done so far in WoW. Three years in WotLK, two months now in Pend with a lv 87 Hunter. Failed at least 12 times or more. Always lost him at the dock. Tried flying high... when he dives off the dock, always lost him and mission failed. Tried below him... still lose him... finally had to hug him when he got near the dock and barely was able to keep up... he dives straight down, then straight up again... I finally finished this one. Now on to the last... arg.

I failed this twice and then got it.

One tip is to stay higher above him than the other racers since his attack has a wider spread. But its easier said than done since he climbs and dives constantly so you try to stay with him only to get hit. Mostly it's easy enough until one point which seems made to shake you off - he won't attack for a while and then attacks as he dips fast. If you get knocked back at this point you will fail.

This guy is definitely the most difficult of the six. The strategy that worked best for me was to fly above him and point the camera angle down. This way I could always see him, where he was going, avoid the attacks, and easily dip and rise as he did. I used this strategy on the last guy as well and found him to be the easiest out of all of them.

I'm about to throw my computer out my window.

He keeps randomly disappearing on me and I fail. Sometimes he disappears 2 minutes in, sometimes 10 seconds after takeoff, and I'm right behind him and slightly higher. He's never knocked me off, I've never lost him, he just freaking disappears!

Is this my computer? My internet connection? A glitch?

Well, this took me 2 tries.

1st run - I flew too far from him and failed it.

2nd run - I completed it this time even with the Warlock flying after me throughout the whole thing trying to find a suitable spot to land to throw DoTS at me.

A strategy I just figured out that worked quite well (L100, 420 Flying speed):

Put a raid mark on him (orange is nicely visible), zoom the camera out, and then just try to keep that raid mark at the bottom center of your screen.

Note, I expect this may not be practical if you're a keyboard-turner; a lot of the twists and turns are quick and I think really require mouse turning.

But, the result is essentially the same as the other strategies: you end up staying ahead and/or above him for most of the flight, and I didn't have to memorize the path.

He seems to have a really hard time hitting you when you are above him. Stay above him with the camera angled down and your mount aiming slightly down and use space bar to go back up when you are getting too close. Turn and move forward with the keyboard, not the right mouse key so you can avoid suddenly going down and keep the camera angled down while moving directly forward. Every now and then a shot does got directly up, but it comes at you side-on and usually misses. Beat him on my second try by doing it this way, I only got hit near the end because he went around the tower and suddenly flew up into me, nailing me at point blank, but I survived the drop and got back up to continue the pursuit

There's actually an easier way to do this, that doesn't require any add-ons, special targeting or help from other players. I was able to get it on my fourth try.

1. Make sure your interface is switched off (ctrl-Z).
2. Stay ABOVE Mulverick at all times at a fair distance (but not far enough to trigger a quest fail), and maintain that distance as much as possible. When he climbs, you climb; when he dives, you dive. This will also keep you away from most of his attacks and let you see them coming well in advance to where you can easily dodge. On my fourth and successful run, he didn't make a single hit.
3. Zoom out far enough so that when you're following him, he's along the bottom edge of your screen and in the center. Steer and maneuver to keep him there as much as possible.
4. When he clears the wooden dock with the two big dragonkin guards, he will nosedive straight down and to the right. That's the hardest part to track to keep up with him, and may take a couple of tries.
5. Remember he's not done when he approaches the landing strip; he's got one more leg of his flight path to go. When he approaches the landing strip the second time and slows down, he's done.

This questchain is one of the most annoying things I've came across in WoW for a long time. I finished it mostly on first try but still annoying af. I'm glad I didn't get stuck.

Don't skip this out of frustration because the chain gives a lot of rep (final race is 1k).

Projectiles don't have any apparent logic, only consistent strat is flying above and behind him, kinda where if you have him targeted his hp bar will sit centered under your UI bars, and when he steers the bar will just kinda steer left or right. Follow him closely and maintain that position, make sure you don't get lazy with the constant diving/ascending or the quest will fail and it takes a decade for it to reset/start over. On my first run with this approach didn't get hit once and completed it. You can also observe the trajectory of the projectiles from this position, and dodge them accordingly (by just flying up generally).

Near the end he will fake a landing, don't take the bait because if you get hit by a lightning it will put you behind and you really wanna stay in that optimal spot.

Strat works on last race too.

Best tactic I found with this was to just try and stay quite far above him, gives you ample clearance of the lightning he throws and gives you great view of where he's going.

Between being hit by his electric orbs before there is even any animation and randomly dismounted just about anywhere, this has made for a very frustrating quest.

Accidentally found a way to complete this quest within the first few seconds (as a druid in flightform).

- Fly right into your target when he takes off and keep the distance minimal.
- When he casts his special ability, let it hit you.
- He should be hit by it too when you were flying right inside of him, which causes him to abort the race and fly back to base.

You should receive the quest completion note immediately or after he's back at base.
Worked for all of the races, except the first (didn't try bc it was short anyways) and last one (tried, but was too hard to pull of).

This might also work on a flying mount. I didn't bother to test it though.

Uhh... I mean I'll take the win here, but my quest was definitely bugged lol.

We took off, and 5 seconds into it, he used his first attack. Hit himself with it somehow, then turned around and slowly went back to the landing strip, never attacking again

I few in front of him, he hit himself, and then he started flying very slowly back to the start, THROUGH the floor. Took like 5 minutes for him to finish and give me credit.

You need to get right in his face at the beginning of the race and stun him with his own attack, then he will slowly bug out move back to landing strip, he may clip through mountains but if you set a raid marker on him and stay as close as possible you will complete the quest when he makes it back.
