Scheduled Maintenance: Sept 20th, 10pm-1am PST
Last week, I wrote
a blog post
about a number of things we're doing to make things a little faster on this part of
The Internets
. The installation of the new database server I mentioned will be happening tonight from 10pm-1am PST.
Oh, wait... that's when when Malgayne plays WoW, you say? Wow, what a coincidence. That sucks.
That'll teach him to break the servers.
We're hoping the maintenance will only take 2 hours, but we're building in an extra hour for all that fun stuff that happens when people mess with servers that no one ever quite anticipates will occur. We're hoping we caught everything, though. We even did an extensive burn-in test of the new server and it out-performs the existing one by a good margin. After the results of that test, I'm quite eager to get that server running!

Brewfest 2010 Has Begun! Get Your Brewmaster Title With Our Guide!
Brewfest has begun yet again, running this year from
September 20
through
October 5
!
We've got our thorough event guide for you guys which will help you earn achievements, get a fancy new outfit and maybe even a mount! Remember that this year, you will be able to queue up for
Coren Direbrew
using the Dungeon Finder - so no more summon drama, LFG woes or any of that foolishness!
Coren still drops the same item level 200 trinkets, but all of his non-trinket drops have been instead moved to the Dungeon Finder reward chest. You will be awarded a Keg-Shaped Treasure Chest for your first kill of Coren Direbrew each day, which contains 2
Emblem of Frost
and has a chance to drop the epic Brewfest mounts and all of the previous year's non-trinket loot.
You can see the full loot lists and information on quests, achievements and more in our full guide! Happy Brewfest!

Winter's Veil
or the
Midsummer Fire Festival

PowerPC Macs No Longer Supported With Cataclysm
Hello, I'm Karadactyl! I've been doing some work on the Cataclysm guide, and now I'm posting blogs! Now, on to the meat and potatoes.
According to Blizzard, soon before the release of Cataclysm, PowerPC Macs will no longer be supported. Attempting to run the patched client via a Mac PPC will cause an error stating that the game cannot run on that architecture. This, obviously, applies to the Cataclysm Beta as well.
The full blue post with all the details is after the break!

The Harvest Festival is here! (Sept 16 - Sept 22)
Yep, the
Harvest Festival
is here! Nothing new this year, but I've taken the liberty of reposting last year's guide on a new guide page for anyone who may not have participated. It's a pretty cool little event, lore-wise, but there's nothing remarkably amazing - they're basically just asking you guys to take a few minutes out of your day to show your respects to your faction's fallen hero. It would be really cool if Blizzard ever decided to elaborate on this event some, maybe by spotlighting other famous heroes (not just Grom and Uther) - maybe even tie it in with Archaeology somehow - yeah, yeah? Ah, wishful thinking... maybe next year.

The Weekly Marmot - Patch 4.0 Speculation
So this week, thanks to Blizzard's timely release of the Patch 4.0 PTR, I get to talk a bunch about how this whole process is going to work based on our experiences from previous expansions. What's the difference between Patch 4.0 and Cataclysm? What kind of release timeframes can we expect? And what's the deal with "Patch 4.0.3"? These exciting questions and more will be answered (or at least have decent guesses aimed towards them) in this week's Weekly Marmot.

Cataclysm Preview: The Battle for Gilneas
Blizzard has released another preview, this time of the new battleground coming in Cataclysm -
The Battle for Gilneas
! This new 10 vs 10 battleground will take place in the actual city of Gilneas, and feature many familiar objectives. Much like
Arathi Basin
, you must control
one of three capture points
that accumulate points - first team to 2000 points is the victor! What's so great about this map that it's actually
in
the city so there are all kinds of choke points and places you can strategically block the opposite faction from progressing.
You can read the entire preview after the break or on Blizzard's official

4.0.1 Now Available on the Background Downloader
It seems when users start up their launchers on the live client you will be greeted with a nice message that says --
Data for the next patch is available.
What does this mean everyone? It means we have finally begun the pre-loading of the 4.0.1 patch. Usually spread out over weeks prior to the release of a major content patch users can grab a huge chunk of the already completed items in the patch so not everything is downloaded on patch day.
To get the background downloader started all you should have to do is boot up the Launcher and make sure you have the options enabled to download in the background.

Growing Pains: or, "Why The Site Is So Slow"
I'm sure that, by now, you've noticed that our site has been having some issues lately. In case you're wondering,
it's all Malgayne's fault.
:cough:
More accurately: We've been in the process of scaling our site to better handle increased traffic. This has included updates to our existing servers as well as getting a new and faster database server set up to add to the site. The new database server is expected to be live within the next few weeks. We've also been optimizing many of our older queries to be more efficient, thus putting less strain on the database servers.
On top of that, we've been migrating to a more efficient caching system for our pages. We actually moved our forums, blog, and select pieces of our database pages over to it a few days ago. The instability you've seen since then was tracked down to a misconfiguration on one of our web servers that limited the number of connections it could make to our caching cluster. Since it wasn't able to hit the caching cluster effectively, it was trying to connect to the database, which spawned another connection attempt, which failed, which made TheOnyx something something.
The misconfiguration has been res

Old Currencies Conversion Rates
September 29, 2010 Update

Cataclysm Changes to Badge/Emblem System
Bashiok just posted a very interesting announcement!
It seems in the upcoming 4.0.1 patch (which is currently on the PTR), all old PvE and PvP tokens will be converted to a new currency system. Badges like
Emblem of Frost
and
Emblem of Triumph
will be converted into
Justice Points
, and all PvE gear that had badge costs will be converted to the new Justice Points system.
On the PvP side, Arena Season 8 will end with 4.0—all Arena, Honor, any leftover Battleground marks,
Stone Keeper's Shard
and any other PvP tokens will be converted into the new version of
Honor Points
. Any items that were sold for any of the old PvP points/tokens will also be converted to the Honor Points system.
Both
Justice Points
and
Honor Points
will have a soft cap—you can go over the cap on the original conversion, but at a later point in time a hard cap will be introduced in a content patch. Any excess points after the hard cap is introduced will be converted to gold, which will be received via the mail system.
You can read the original post by Bashiok after the break!

But I do tend to ramble - let me show you a few things about it!

Official Cataclysm Ashenvale Preview
Blizzard has once again graced us with another zone preview - this time with quest designers
Eric Maloof
and
Steve Burke

Ashenvale
in Cataclysm. Eric and Steve go on to talk about the new volcano that has erupted in northern Ashenvale, and how the Horde are taking over key points that were once held by the Alliance. They wrap up the preview by discussing what changed most in Ashenvale, and according to Eric and Steve the terrain is less frustrating than before but the story hasn't changed much—other than being much more intense!
You can check out the entire preview after the break and while you're at it you can check out all of our screenshots of Ashenvale in our

We’ve added a new flying skill called Flight Master's License. When World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is released, players who purchase the expansion will see this skill available from flight trainers for 250 gold once they reach level 60.
