I caught my 15 Pound Mud Snapper at Stillwhisper Pond just outside of Silvermoon City in Eversong Woods. I didn't use any fish hooks or lures.

After recently hearing that Stonebull Lake in Mulgore was a good place to fish for this, I decided to try it out. Sat down the first night and caught 100 fish, of which two were the 10 pound variety of this. I was quite annoyed, as anyone would have been. Second night, I went back to Stonebull and got it on my 128th cast. I also got a third 10 Pound Mud Snapper. Very odd.

So overall, it took me 228 casts, which seems to fit in with the range of numbers I've been reading lately.

I was at 263 fishing, and about 710, give or take a few, fish caught on my way to the 1,000 fish achievement. So I thought I'd just knock both those out at the same time, (1k Fish and 300 fishing) but then I started thinking, well, where could I go to make getting the rare fish easier to? Bam, Goldshire, thought by the time I'd finished, I'd have all 3.

Wrong.

Now at 300 fishing and getting the 1,000 Fish. Here is what I fished up in goldshire.

Okey, so I tried to get the achievement for catching one of the rare fishes. I am lvl 80 and havent maxed out my fishing skill yet so I was thinking of getting two in one hit. So I went to Crystal Lake near Goldshire and started fishing. Result:
187 Brilliant Smallfish
105 Longjaw Mud Snapper
3 Minor mana potion
1 10 Pound Mud Snapper
1 Simple Dagger
-no 15 Pound Mud Snapper-

And I didnt realise before that that I should fish here. Because all the other fish isnt worth squat. So I am off to fish for the Dark Herring or whatever its called.

Don't listen to anyone that claims any certain fishing pool has a higher chance than others -- it's BS. They all have the same chance to drop a pound fish, and each of those pound fish has a small chance of being max weight. Go to a pool in the zone that is easiest for you to reach.

15 Pound Mud Snapper can be fished from the inland waters of:

There are no reliable sources for its exact drop rate (as you can see, Wowhead doesn't even list it in fishing tables), but estimates place it between 1 in 1000 and 1 in 2000. There is currently a rumor on El's Fishing Forums that the drop rate is highest in Shadowglen, Teldrassil.

After spending hours upon hours (over a number of days), I caught this in Shadowglen, Teldrassil. I have no recorded data to offer, other than what I recall when I began this hunt. I began with roughly 2,000 "Fish and other things caught" and, upon catching the , ended with 5,079. I reeled in many potions, 10/12-pounders and even an uncommon-quality weapon before finally receiving this item.

Just to shed some light on how random the RNG gods are, after spending a brutal 5-hour fish-off, I decided to log for a bit. After I logged back in shortly after and sinking my bobber only a few times, this little guy revealed itself.

Do not be discouraged. Many people only comment upon being lucky, making it out to be easier than it truly is. As you know, there is no solid data. When tackling (no pun intended) anything that's believed to be a .5% chance of success, patience is the only tool at your disposal.

...as I hate Hell, all Montagues and thee, 15 pound mudsnapper.

I switched to Stonebull Lake. 43 catches and I had actually said Eff this and was moving away from my computer and clicked the bobber 1 last time and DING! Catch 44. Hello Salty!

(PS I spent around 4700 catches in various places specifically fishing for a rare)

I was fishing 15 pound mud snapper in Teldrassil. I had fished over 1900 fish from that pond when the rare fish came up. I used to fish with fishing in number 1 and I looted the fish with shift-click. When 15 pound mud snapper came, my inventory was full and I didn't get the fish since I pressed 1 too fast without realizing what had happened... I contacted a GM but there was nothing he could do. So now I just have to get another 1900 fish from that lake...

After seeing the posts here, I tried to fish in Crystal lake in Elwynn Forest.
I brought a friend, and we sat fishing.
After 3 hours and about 650 casts I got my 15 Pound Mudsnapper.
Lucky?
Well, yeah, I feel pretty lucky.

So you guys should go try this place, as I spent only 3 hours. Maybe you have to spend more, maybe less, but that's how this achievement works!

Edit: My friend caught it after 1768 casts and 10 hours of continous fishing. I think she went to Eversong Woods after a while.

So I was fishing on my alt near Darnassus while waiting for BGs to pop. After a few casts I see a red mud snapper icon. I was surprised and checked it... '12 pound'. Darn it, oh well. So I fished some more... after about an hour and some BGs I fish another red mud snapper. This time it was 10 pound. I feel like they're just teasing me.

Edit: Found another 10 pound :((
Edit 2: Found another 12 pound. They must be common, haven't checked.
Edit 3: After a few hours of fishing I have found 2 12 pounders and 4 10 pounders, a small red bag, minor mana potion, a white gun and a ton of crap fish. Still no sign of it after about 500 casts.

Do NOT turn auto loot off while fishing for this.

While the description on the achievement says "catch," you must, in fact, LOOT the fish to get the achievement. I didn't even realize I had it until I saw it listed on Fishing Buddy. It doesn't help that the icon is the exact same one as the 10 and 12 pounders.

I sent in for a ticket and will edit after I hear what the GM says. Please, fellow fishermen, don't make the same mistake that I did. :(

After six hours and 1285 casts in Muglore the 15 Pound Mud Snapper is mine. I was getting between 180-200 casts and hour. Max fishing with the hat and 100 fishing one hour long lure. My advice is to just fish for that one hour once or twice a day when you have nothing else to do. You'll get it eventually. ^.^

Over ~~5000~~ 10000 casts trying to get this guy at Crystal Lake with no luck. I started counting just before 5000 total fish caught and now have over 10000 fish caught over two weeks. I was going to try Dun Morogh but decided I'd like to stick with Elwynn to at least 10000. I'm now fishing for the 34 pound catfish in Stormwind.

Edit: Went for 1000 casts for the catfish in stormwind, then 1000 casts in Mulgore, before finally getting it after 212 casts in Teldrassil... Chuffed!

Today I also got the blacktip shark in the second pool I fished in, but was seconds too late handing it in... The only achievement I need for Salty and finishing my Professions tab! Wish me luck, wowhead.

Caught the 15 Pound Mud Snapper today after 293 casts at Stonebull Lake in Mulgore. Took 1 hour 16 minutes. Actually caught one of each of the Mud Snappers (10, 12, 15).

I spent about a week trying for this achievement. I started out in HF trying for dark herring but after approx. 4,000 casts i gave up and headed to Mulgore. 2182 casts later i caught the 15 pounder!

After around 7000 casts trying to get the Dark Herring in Howling Fjord i decided i'd had enough and needed some new scenery so went for the 15 pound Mudsnapper.

After around an hour fishing at Stonebull Lake, Mulgore i finally got the achievement!

Obviously this is completely down to luck but if you're having a mental breakdown getting the Dark Herring its worth a try!

ok, i got it finally in eversong woods, outside the silvermoon city

one has to fish around 10 hours in one day
around 2100 fish
i tried three days, the first i got 400 fish and the second 700. they didnt add up. had to go through an 11 hour fishing exaustion the third day.

the good thing is, one gets 10 points for each fish of the achievement "one that didnt get away". so its worth trying for all of them.

Just caught this big guy in Stillwater pond outside of Silvermoon City. Tried several other locations for other rare fish for about 5 hours worth of fishing total for the achievement. Here are my stats:

I actually originally started fishing for the Dark Herring in Howling Fjord; figuring that I also had a shot at the Sea Turtle. I was lucky enough to fish up the Sea Turtle after about 2 hours, but no luck with the Dark Herring. So I decided to try Stonebull Lake in Mulgore, for a change of scenery and to also get away from those damn Allies =)

I caught my 15 pound snapper on cast 350! Ealier in the day I did 2185 cast in Howling Fjord for the Dark Herring with no success. After reading some posts on Wowhead I decided that the 15 pound snapper ws the best bet.

I caught it in about 45 minutes of fishing in Crystal lake.
It can be the patch 4.0.1. and since im not in favor of the RNG I think it's a good chance that 4.0.1. is the deal.

I'm averaging about 53 casts per non vanilla catch (no small brilliant and no Longjaw mudsnapper)

If people are right and the odds are about 1/1500 then I'm in the unluckiest 17% of the population :(

Does anyone know if this can be caught somewhere besides the inland pools in the starting areas?

I've been hanging around in the Wetlands a lot, waiting on Deathwing to show up for Stand in the Fire. Figured fishing could be a good way to pass the time. I catch the ordinary Mud Snapper fish on a regular basis from the pond areas along the waterways, if that means anything...

I just got insanely lucky with this. Rolled a toon (gnome mage) on a friend's server and decided to fish while I wait for her to get home from work. I picked up Fishing skill and a pole (well, two. a normal and a strong fishing pole) and went to fish right next to the trainer at Iceflow Lake in Dun Morogh. 13 casts later, I get this and the achieve. Definitely one of my luckier moments. (My brother fished up Ol' Crafty doing his dailies in Org. a while back. Now I don't have to be jealous anymore.)

Caught this fish today.

I've fished about 2,5k in Grizzly for Dark Herring, about 2k in Mulgore/Stonebull Lake -many claim to fish the rare very early if you stand in the lucky spot with the tree log-. I believe it's RNG but when you fish that much you don't mind a change in the scenery.

I've seen a guy get this achievement while he was doing the Thunder Falls

After months I decided to go after this achievement again. Yesterday I fished in Thunder Fall for around 300 casts.

Today I went to Crystal Lake straight forward and here is what I caught:

After about 3000 cast trying to get the Dark Herring in HF, I decided I try Stonebull Lake, Mulgore. After 3 hours of fishing here's what I've gotten. (I'll update this later once I catch it, or my bags fill up again).

After trying Herring pools for the dark herring part of the achieve for....3 weeks I have swapped to a stonebull lake in Mulgore.

Fishing Part 1 (I shall up date these)

Time spent = 50mins

164 items in total divided by 50mins = 3.28 "fish" per second.
Considering apparently this fish is 1/2000 odd change to "statistics" and ive timed this by 1000 (3.28 x 1000) 3280 just because I know im unlucky. This is a ref est of 54.6 hours I need to fish....just to be statistically lucky...oh well 54.1hours to go!

Shall try again later today for a similar time after server reset (was kicked off lol)

After fishing in Howling Fjord pools for 300-odd casts in hopes of getting the Dark Herring or Sea Turtle, I swapped to Stonebull Lake in hope of a little Wowhead magic (and also so I didn't need to swap from pool to pool!)

Well I won the Fishing Tourny, and then set out to get this achievement next. I did a good 2,000-3,000 casts in Howling Fjord for the Dark Herring and the Sea Turtle and got nothing. So I went to Crystal Lake and in less than 200 casts I got the 15 Pound Mud Snapper. I highly recommend you go for the 15 Pound Mud Snapper, data proves it seems to have a higher drop rate, and people seem to have better luck with it as well.

"100 casts a day heads a Mud Snapper your way." A great way to do this is to spend 15 mins/100 casts a day at Crystal Lake.

On day 3, at cast number 273 I caught it!

Shadowglen pools in Teldrassil yielded the 15 Pound Mud Snapper after 306 catches. Took approximately an hour and a half.

First of all, let me just say, that I hate thorycrafting, but I might be on to something. I have been trying to fish up a15 pound Mud Snapper at Stonebull Lake in Mulgore for months now. I have been getting about 4-5 10 pounders every hour. The other day, it was raining in Mulgore and in 30 min., I got 3 12 pounders. It soon stopped raining and I began to catch 10 pounders again. So, I am wondering if the weather has anything to do with the drop rate of the 15 pounder. Just a thought. Will update whenever I catch one (whenever that may be)

Got the 15-pounder at almost my 10.000:nd cast in Elwynn forest, switching between Chrystal lake and Mirror lake. It shouldn't make a difference where you fish but after a while I got restless and wanted new scenery ;)
I should be so jealous of you guys who got it <100 casts but I'm not. It was such a great feeling to finally hear the sound of the achievement popping that it made up for all the time spent fishing.

After a few days of grinding I finally caught myself a fine looking 15 Pound Mud Snapper.
I like to read other players comments about how they managed to fish it while fishing on my own, it gives me new hope towards an achievement like this. Anyways here is my story, enjoy.

Wednesday evening I first headed to Howling Fjord to see if I had any luck with Dark Herring today, which I hadn't. I began to get curious about the best place to fish up the rare fish, and I started searching for the easiest one, and that is where the 15 Pound Mud Snapper from Shadowglen in Teldrassil came to me. I saw it had a drop rate on 0,6% according to wowhead, which is a lot higher than 0,1% on Dark Herring, so I rushed down to Shadowglen, and began to fish. I sat there for about 20 minutes, when I almost died of an heartattack when I caught the 10 Pound Mud Snapper. A big disapointment. Another 10 minutes passed by, and again, I almost died of an heartattack, when I caught the 12 Pound Mud Snapper. Another big disapointment. I began to think about luck. Would I be granted some extra luck if I was nice towards a few low levels? To my surprise, a level 5 hunter came by and asked for some gold, and so I gave him what he needed. I than thought my luck has increased, but I soon began to realise it hadn't. After around 45 minutes, I put on my favorite song, and sat down in-game, so I looked like a pro fisher, and there it was... I almost coulden't believe it. The 15 Pound Mud Snapper at the end of my line. Only after about 117 casts, it was there. Though, plus 500 casts from Northrend aswell.

You might call me lucky, but I stand by the believe in helping other people and you shall be helped aswell. Just for fun, I got my percentages to share aswell.

At first I was chasing the Dark Herring by fishing in the Fangtooth Herring pools all around Howling Fjord (map).
Got to 889 casts (29%) and then decided this wasn't working. Stopped fishing in pools.

Switched to fish in open water at Winter's Breath Lake -- The lake where the maiden is frozen in the middle.
Here are the stats from catching the other 2264 casts (71%) in the area:

Bonescale Snapper: 1133 - 50%
Fangtooth Herring: 470 - 20%
Glacial Salmon: 355 - 15%
Pygmy Suckerfish: 257 - 11%
Crystallized Water: 29 - 1%
Reinforced Crate: 20 - <1% (Containing Cobalt Ore, Frostweave Cloth of Borean Leather Scraps)
--- TOTAL --- 2264 Casts (71%).

After hours of fishing over a few days I decided to give up and move on to catch something else.
I headed to Elwynn Forest where I read that many people have had luck in catching the 15 Pound Mud Snapper
Fished at both Crystal Lake and Thunder Falls for ~30 mins and caught 74 Raw Brilliant Smallfish and 36 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper

Decided to move again to; this time to Teldrassil where there are two very small lakes in Shadowglen.
Results are as follows:

Raw Brilliant Smallfish: 5 - 55%
Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper: 3 - 33%
15 Pound Mud Snapper: 1 - 11%
--- TOTAL --- 9 Casts (100%)

In conclusion; I was very lucky in this spot. Either that or RNG was on my side.
Just because I caught it in 9 casts in this spot does not mean you will do the exact same.
It is still 1 in 1000 chance of catching any of these rare fish. Although you may be lucky!

I made a trial account and ran my little human to Goldshire, learned fishing, sat down to level it up to 50 and number 33 fish was the 15 lbs mud snapper. I about jumped out of my seat when I dinged! Than cried. I've been trying for 3 years on my main, pretty much given up ever catching a rare fish anywhere and this little human on a totally different account gets it! *bangs forehead to keyboard.*

It took me ~8hrs of fishing in Stonebull Lake (Mulgore - 43, 60).

Finally got this today without too much trouble in Mulgore at the lake. Ended up with about 126 Brilliant Smallfish, 58 Raw Longjaw Mud Snappers, and 1 each 10 lb, 12 lb, and 15lb mud snapper as well as one minor mana pot.

It's not the first time I've tried, but the first time I've had any success - used coords 43,60 as posted by another.

I was reading this page, getting discouraged by all the data, knowing that it's RNG and RNG hates me. I spent most of my time in Howling Fjord after the dark herring. I couldn't take that place anymore so I decided to switch things up. So I decided Elwynn and this 15lb'er. Well it was worth it, after thousands of Fangtooth Herrings, got the snapper after 20 casts.

I have over 24 hours worth of fishing put into this thing, landing around 30 ten and twelve pound mud snappers. This is after spending a good 9 hours trying for the dark herring out of Howling Fjord. Has anyone caught this guy since 5.0?

I may quite possibly kill myself over this damned fish. I have been after this achievement since 09'. I have every single other one except this. I spend at least an hour a day fishing in either Mulgore or Tirisfal to get this fish. I have at least 10,000 casts or more in the last few months alone. I have also spent a lot of time tying to get the sea turtle, which I did, but no dark herring. I am convinced that I need to gripe about it here in order for RNG to accept me into the Salty Ranks.

Or I've just gone completely insane watching fishing bobbers. Either way.

I don't have any idea how I got this lucky. I decided to get a few achievements I was missing. I worked on The Limnologist and The Oceanographer. After those were finished (all but Winter Squid), I noticed I still didn't have the One That Didn't Get Away. I went to Mulgore to try to fish up the 15 Pound Mud Snapper. I was prepared for hours of nothing. Here is my list of casts:

I actually had to make a Wowhead account just to share my experience with this achievement. Got 15 pound mud snapper from Mulgore's lake. I was prepared for a day of fishing, but fortunately manage to catch this fish from my 8th cast. So ridicilous.

I can confirm as of the latest patch 5.4.1 you can catch this in the Mulgore lake, although it did take me roughly 12 hours of casting and I'd guess around 1500-2000 casts if not more. I had just my normal 600 fishing skill (no special poles or lures) and it was just in open water. Sit back, relax, and get ready to blow hours trying to catch this bastard!

Took me about 1600-2000 casts across two characters in Elwynn Forest to fish this up. It took much longer than some of the comments here on Wowhead would lead you to believe. Toward the end, I decided to level one of my alts' fishing skills... I caught the 15 Pound Mud Snapper at 248 Fishing skill. Definitely saving it in my character's bank. :)

This is getting ridiculous, im pushing 5000 casts over 20 hrs of straight fishing, in stonebull Lake ive caught several 10 and 12 pounders, and stacks upon stacks of Raw mudsnappers and smallfish, im level 90 with maxed fishing. Does it no longer drop here?

Given 15 Pound Mud Snapper droprate on wowhead (0,06%), the probability 'p' to fish it at least once is

p = 1 - (probability not to fish it at all)^n where 'n' is the number of your casts

So if you want to be 90% sure to fish it once, you should aim for 'n' casts as :

I started in Darkmoon Faire trying to catch Steelscale Crushfish until I read that you can only catch him there if your fishing skill is between 100-150 and NOT past. So based on other comments I went to Crystal Lake in Eelwyn Forest.

Any rumors of higher drop rates across low level areas are false. If it can be fished there, it has the same chances. and if somehow they were different, it would be barely noticeable, and still take anywhere between 1-2000 casts regardless. Just go Crystal lake/Stonebull lake and pray it shows.

Today I've caught Mr. Pinchy in the morning (first attempt dropped the pet), the Sea turtle mount this afternoon. And now with my streak I'm tryina find this fishy in Stonebull. I've casted around 250 times now and caught the 10 pound and 12 pound version so far, hopefully I get the same pattern and catch the 15 pound next.

I've found that whenever you catch a Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper you get a 2.8% chance to catch a pounded version, either 10 or 12. I'm assuming the fabled 15 has a chance to drop then.

So far my results for 15 Pound Mud Snapper has been 0%. Caught 67 of the lesser kind (10 and 12) so far.

I'm stopping now. Either something is broken with the loot tables or I am incredibly unlucky. According to the generally accepted drop rate of 0.06% I should have gotten one with a 97% of certainty now. Guess I'll try on a future patch or something.

So, tonight I finally fished up that wonderfully weighted fish, after 3 days worth of 8-10 hours sessions.
At the end of this incredibly dull grind, I thought I'd share what little data I bothered to collect.

All fishing was done at Stonebull Lake, parked close to the fishing trainer.

Okay i don't know exactly how many hours i spent in orgrimar but it was a lot. About 4 days in a row i fished for 2 hours each night while the wife and kids wacthed tv.

I read post not to fish there so i move over to Mulgore Stonebull Lake
I went at it pretty hard.

I don't have exact numbers, but when i first started i only had around 7000 fish caught. I am now at 13,000 fish caught.

I started to monitor the fish count and my time.

Around 8 hours ( not including the hours and hours i fished without keeping track)

Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper = 753
Raw Brilliant Smallfish = 1246
10 Pound Mud Snapper = 15
12 Pound Mud Snapper = 8
Minor Healing Potion = 16
Journeyman's Pants = 1
Minor Mana Potion = 3

I Still have not caught this 15 pound fish.

EDIT:
Well I am at 17,300 fish caught. Still No 15lb mud snapper.
I tried thunder falls, it seems like that is a daily hub so i left. I kept thinking what if i did all this fishing and they come and get my fish on there first cast lol.

EDIT: well 10 hours later, and a little down time in between, I went to dalaran and got every single coin in about an hour or so. Then took a break. Came back on went back to stonebull lake. Fished for about 30 minutes final count was 18,902 fish caught. ( i think it took me about 6000 casts at stone bull. ) AND BAM Caught him and got my salty title! WOOT

Hello Everyone, first post on wowhead, but I just got my Salty title after a zillion years, and my last achievement was "One That Didn't Get Away", so I thought I'd share my 15 Pound Mud Snapper catch to encourage anyone who has interest in the Salty title, but might be losing their persistence.

I fished in the very far west coast of Crystal Lake in Elwynn Forest near Stormwind City.

I earned the achievement today, June 8, 2015, so it's still possible!

I casted 878 times over the course of about 5 hours, and I caught the following:

Raw Brilliant Small Fish - 527
Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper - 337
10 Pound Mud Snapper - 6
12 Pound Mud Snapper - 5
Minor Mana Pot - 2
15 Pound Mud Snapper - 1

Good luck you guys. Don't give up. I waited forever to do this, and fished for other fish on the "One That Didn't Get Away" list, but never caught any. I decided not to waste anymore time on this until after I wont he IMPOSSIBLE fishing contests for "Master Angler of Azeroth"--but I never quit! Finally won it! First Place! So then I went to catch this bad boy.

Just putting this here to emphasize that this is ultimately an RNG game;mentioned Wowhead droprates, location and gear are irrelevant, fishing skill just needs to be high enough so that you don't fish up junk.
I have fished with skill 890 to 1140 using Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole, Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin'Boots and Nat's Hat or one of the two WoD fishing hats + Worm Supreme in :
- 3 lakes lakes in Elwynn + the pond behind the Blacksmith because that's where little Matt was heading when he said the fish didn't bite in Crystal Lake.
- Stonebull Lake in Mulgore
- Both Lakes in Teldrassil

I also briefly went to Howling Fjord to try and catch the Dark Herring after trying for 5k times for the snapper but quickly quit because the pool hopping was worse than casting over and over again.

Ended up catching it in Crystal Lake in Elwynn Forest after 7357 catches (not even counting the missed catches and the ones that didn't land correctly).

Like many players hunting for Accomplished Angler, I left One That Didn't Get Away for the very last moment. At the beginning I was planing to hunt for the Dark Herring with the idea with a bit of luck to get Sea Turtle mount. After two attempts about 1 hour each I totally quited this idea. Reading most of comments Stonebull Lake in Mulgore looks like the best option - minimum chance to be bothered by alliance players and in case other players are fishing there is enough space.
I decided to fish till I catch the 15 Pound Mud Snapper so I arrived with all my best fishing equipment - Nat's Drinking Hat, Arcanite Fishing Pole enchanted with High Test Eternium Fishing Line at 00:50 server time. What I made different is that I was fishing from the water using the Anglers Fishing Raft. At 02:20 am I made it.

Apparently you can't fish this, or any fish, in Shadowglen anymore. I keep getting a message at the two pools there saying "There aren't any fish here".

Although, I did actually end up fishing this out of Lake Al'Ameth in Teldrassil. It took around 200 casts there.

I also tried about 1,500 casts in Elwynn with no luck.

Small tip for all of you guys fishing for that. Fished that in Lakeshire at platform in Goldshire where fishing trainer is standing. Was turned toward the deeper water on my right but when turned toward shallow and mud water on my left I was catching more Longjaw Mud Snapper, 10 Pound Mud Snapper, 12 Pound Mud Snapper and after much less casts I did catch my
. That was 550 cast when turned right and 150 turned left.

Woah. I'm a lightweight, so this toon (Tantrevalles@Wyrmrest Accord) only has a hair over 20,000 casts to his name since starting in 2012. At least a third of those casts have been in Elwynn Forest waters.

Finally got the guy, just now. I was using the regular "starter" level 1 fishing pole, too, as tonight I'm just fishing to relax and didn't expect to catch the rare, and Lo! there he was before I did 10 casts.

What a relief. Stick with it, folks. There's no volume discount on the RNG. Just gotta keep rolling the dice 'til they come up with what you need.

I've done about 90 casts since writing the first part of this post, and I've just landed a second 15-pounder.

Every single cast has a very low drop chance of .01%-.06%, but the probability of seeing it rises with each cast. It's not a promise, but gives you an idea of how much time you might need to invest:

500-----> 14%
1000---> 26%
1500---> 36%
2000---> 45%
2400---> 51%
3000---> 59%

This is probably the same/easiest fish to catch for the achievement, considering you don't need to move to pools and it's near Stormwind. With an median/average cast of twelve seconds and 2400 casts. You should expect to have a full 8 hour fishing session to have a greater than 50% probability of seeing this fish

It could be longer. It could be shorter. Just don't expect this one to come easily.

Hey guys had a hell of a time trying to get the one that didn't get away and resorted to catching the 15lber over 6k failed attempts at the dark herring. I first fished at goldshire swear I caught it after 1.2k casts and recasted faster that the autoloot could work. I know I caught it, needless to say I was salty about that. I switched locations to crystal lake and casted about 850 times no luck. Next day started with 200 casts no luck, then went to stone bull lake at the lucky log and got it after about 300 casts. This was over the course of about 4 days including time spent on dark herring/sea turtle

Took me 2 hour and 15 minutes of fishing at Stonebull Lake in Mulgore. Had 815 fishing skill with the bonuses.

I fished my 15 Pound Mud Snapper from Stonebull Lake in Mulgore. Nice and relaxing. I didn't use any kind of bait or bonuses. I only had my maxed out fishing (700) and the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole. Good luck!

I must have the worst luck ever. I have spent over 14 hours of straight fishing without seeing this item drop. I have tried on two separate characters with varying fishing skill (700+ and 300-500+). I have caught over 1000 of each fish type and numerous potions, 10, 12 pound fish. I will continue to fish.. but I am running out of beer.. and sanity. This is the last quest for my title!

Could I be doing something wrong? I am fishing in the Mirror/Crystal Lake + the waterfall above Mirror lake. I just stand there and fish, after ~50 cast I move 40 yards and continue fishing.. I used bait as well but I see that it makes no difference.

UPDATE:

Alright, so I am going to try and clear up a few things after spending over 24 hours fishing for the 15 Pound Mud Snapper.

- Doesn't need to be caught in a pond
- Caught mine in Crystal Lake with a fishing level of 688

Now, for some fun stuff..

I literally spend over 24 hours fishing for this guy. I got so frustrated on the last cast so I spammed the cast button 6 or 8 times and let it sit. Upon clicking the bobber, sure enough, I got the fish. I don't know if Blizzard has some kind of "anti" botting mechanic in place, but it was odd that as soon as I spammed the cast button it dropped (after fishing one cast at a time for so long).

I hope this helps, I would love to hear if others spam the cast button land a fish instantly...

After roughly 10 hours of in-game farming, I've decided to link my end results. I fished for a total of three days across a total of three subzones. I don't know the exact numbers of each zone, but I made the catch of the 15 Pound Mud Snapper in Mulgore, Stonebull Lake.

47.59 62.28 in Elwynn Forest Crystal Lake standing on dock next to Lee Brown
Had been fishing all day (11:30am -12:01am) using Underlight Angler and Nat's Drinking Hat
Around 12:01 I got frustrated and unequipped the Underlight Angler did a cast with my weapon equipped and got the 15 Pound Mud Snapper

Could the Angler have prevented the catch all day or was that just my luck?

Either they made this Alot easier or I just got stupid lucky. Got it on my 10th cast...

I used Strong Fishing Pole together with Sharpened Fish Hook and my fishing skill is at 600.

Note: As many user reported, I managed to fish the ba***rd after logging on my 3rd day. I fished almost 14 hours straight without success, then logged in the next day to catch it after 50 casts. So maybe there's something in the drop code that makes it better to do few casts every day more than a 14h tryhard session.
I have no concrete evidence about this theory but many users reported my same fate.

I was really lucky with this one compared to some of you. I was really surprised when I got it after 2-ish hours.

My location was just north of the fishing supplies vendor (47/53).
I used Oversized Bobber and Bright Baubles on a Fishing Pole.
Skill when I got it was 275.

Still can be fished on Azuremyst Isle (Silverline Lake) in 9.0.2, even if fishing skill increases on Outlands fishing now.

I needed to complete the One That Didn't Get Away achievement and already had a habit of fishing for Deviate Fish outside of Wailing Cavern. Glancing at the zone sources of the 15 pound mud snapper and seeing Northern Barrens listed I thought I could kill two birds by fishing up this rare while restocking on Deviate Fish. It was only after hours of fishing and no 10/12/15 pound mud snappers that I came back and saw that there haven't ever been any recorded catches of these fish in the water outside Wailing Caverns. Looks like it's only been caught in the river at the northeast part of the zone. Just wanted to warn others that might read the comments but not check the zone map for likely fishing spots.

This one was horrible to obtain. I predict around 2500 - 3000 casts total based on my stats.

I fished in Durotar for the 15 Pound Mud Snapper for about half of this, the other half I did at the lake in Mulgore. Neither spot seemed better than the other. Exact coords I used the map locations from wowhead under the fish itself, just look at the map for the most dots. That's what I did.

I was unable to figure out how to enter Andorhal (check the One That Didn't Get Away achievement comments, that seems like the easiest route) as I'm a returning player, if anyone has time maybe they could create a more step by step post for those in Dragonblight, previous comments just didn't seem clear to me so I ended up committed after 1000 casts and just kept going. Nice little thing for me was that as the server turned midnight about a minute or two later I got it. I'm sure its just RNG and not that the 15 Pound Mud Snapper wakes up around midnight to feast but a nice way to finish.
