Yes. Leatherworking makes mail armour. But you mainly want it for the buffs.

And yes, there's always some gold you can make by selling crafted gear from skinning/LW on the AH.

Leatherworking starts making mail items from level 40 everything before that is leather.
which is fine, since hunters and shamans cant wear any mail before lvl 40 anyway and use leather.
think that translates in something like around skill 200 mail items start appearing? (might be sooner/later, im sure you can find it in the database)

Leatherworking gives you the ability to add embossments onto your bracers. So instead of enchanting your bracers with
Greater Agility
, you are able to enchant them with
. That is its major benefit, it also allows you to enchant your legs with
Primal Leg Reinforcements
at the cost of an Eternium Thread instead of buying it off the auction house!
Leatherworking is a good source of gold, if you get the correct recipes and are able to craft higher level items, but sometimes people are willing to pay quite a lot for transmog items that are made by Leatherworkers! Hope this helped :)

It also allows you to craft
Gorge Stalker Legplates
, which, having 2 red sockets, crit and haste, is ideal for hunters until you get to heroic gear (or at least warforged normal). Skinning also passively gives you some small amount of crit, which is good.
