How to Spend Money (and other currencies) in WoW

Hello Heroes. I was just going through the Economy & Money guides and realized they are all about making money. I think it is really important to help people spend money wisely in the game as well. I found myself referring to guildies a lot but I really wish somebody could have told me to not get stuck on transmogging. I don't know how much gold I was unwittingly blowing on transmog, but I know that when it came time to buy flying training for Northrend, Pandaria, and faster speeds I was always coming up way short.
As a new player, there is still a lot I don't know about when it comes to spending currencies.
Can we get an experienced player or two to put out a guide on spending currencies wisely?
From gold, to honor, justice, valor, to DMF tickets, to ironpaw tokens, etc. Thanks!

If you
look up any currency
on this database, it will show a tab "Currency for" which will tell you what items you can purchase with the currency.
In addition, there are a multitude of guides that can point you to different things that you can spend currencies on, when you choose the currency that you want to spend, after the description of the currency and before the tabbed section which includes the "currency for" as well as "reward from" "contained in" as well as "comments", you will see links for various guides written by Wowhead staff as well as other members of the Wowhead community.
For example, the first currency you listed is
, on that page you will find that it can be
used to purchase 4343 different items
, and there are two guides available currently:
Gearing up when you hit 90
MoP - Do your dailies effectively
There are as of the time of this post, 32 different currencies available in the game.

Dont buy any crap, save your gold.
You really don't need to buy anything until you hit or are close to the level cap.

To SoCalWowGal: Would it be worthy of consolidating those posts/guide sand putting in economy and money for better visibility?
To Woodrun: Sounds good, but if that's the case what am I looking to purchase at level cap (which I am currently and so far I just finished all my flight training and am starting to save up again from about 100 gold...)?

I don't think that Wowhead wants users to create guides that are merely consolidations or lists of guides that have already been created.
Feel free to create your own Guides and submit them to Wowhead for consideration for publication. There is
Guide Writing for Dummies
to help you get started. Also, as someone who ganders at the
Latest Comments
quite frequently, I can say that I have seen at least the first sentence of feedback that Wowhead moderators provide to guidewriters when their guides are not approved and the Wowhead staff appear to be very helpful in their comments.
I am not sure on how a guide is selected to be listed under a particular section (that is does the user select it? or does Wowhead staff make that determination?), or even if it is possible for guides to be cross referenced under more than one section in the future. Those are issues that you would be best to ask the Wowhead staff by either posting in the
Wowhead Feedback forums
or by submitting a direct message to them via the "Feedback Link" at the top of the page that you want to give feedback about, or by sending a message to feedback@wowhead.com.

Have you leveled your professons, try the AH? I use a bank alt with a guild bank and sell/hoard stuff that way.
Honetsly, I dont use the AH hardly at all anymore, as a tank, quick dungeons and dailies pretty much fill the bank up pretty quickly.

I am slowly leveling mining and herbalism because I didn't want to spend significant time not playing the game for my first toon.
Hoard stuff? Sounds as bad as transmogging :) But seriously, what do you hoard? Possible sale items or you mean just personal stuff for storage.

I always find leveling profs as I go easier than doing it once I max out.
I hoard different mats for alts mostly.
I have Xmogged a bit on a couple of toons but Im ambivalent about the proccess really.
Back to the point, when you said new player I didnt realize you meant your very first toon.
Try to get into doing a few dailies, either profession based in
JC, Fishing or Cooking
, or differet
faction
dailies. Plenty of gold to be had that way too.
I like to play a tank so running dungeons can net out some small profit as well.

Yeah when I chat to guildies about almost anything I see the word "dailies". And I slowly shrink in my chair. I shouldn't be surprised since most of the game is considerably repetitive. But the exact same thing within consecutive days? I dunno...

No different than playing WoW in general, same kind of thing everyday ;)
Pick your dailies, see which ones you like to do.
You are not obligated to do the same ones every day either.
edit - As ElhonnaDS points out below there are many other ways to make money.
I didn't mean to imply that dailies were the only choice.
edit - spelling!

@OP- if you have herbalism and mining, I would recommend farming non-end game mats. Usually the AH is saturated with whatever the current expac's gathered materials are because people gather while they quest. Outlands is a good place to farm- there's almost always a shortage of fel iron, primal fire and khorium on the AH, and people who make new engineers still need those items for mounts and engineering toys. Thorium is a decent old world ore to mine too, and arcane crystals can sell fairly high since they are needed in bulk for people completing old legendaries.
When herbing, there are certain "choke point" herbs for leveling alchemy, that tend to be in shorter supply and sell higher because people need them to get over certain levels. I don't remember off hand what they are, but if you look at the AH you'll see what herbs are high priced and in low supply.
Farming old instances is pretty lucrative too:
- Usually there is a shortage of Frostweave and Embersilk on the AH, so those sell for a pretty good price compared to other cloth.
- Many of the high priced transmog greens come from vanilla raids- Masterwork, Glorious, and I believe Ornate all drop in the older raids. Plus, these raids will drop rare patterns- some of which are BOE- that a lot of newer players, or people's alts- won't have that sell nicely, and the greens there that aren't transmog items will disenchant to illusion dust and eternal essences, which sell really well, and are in short supply since most world green drops of that level become arcane dust instead. And if you do MC, people will buy the Sulfuron Ingots and Blood of the Mountain for a nice price when they are working on legendaries.
- The price has dropped a bit on all the pets they added to the old instances this expac, but there are a couple that seem to still be uncommon- possibly because people are having trouble soloing those bosses. The pets from BWL, the pet from the Twins in AQ40, and the pet from The last boss in SSC all still seem to sell decently.
i could give you more suggestions if you were a dailies person, but since you are not I'll end here with where to make money.
In terms of how to spend money, my motto is when in doubt, farm it yourself. Not only are you not spending on the materials, but you generally are making gold at the same time from other drops and such. There is very little that I actually buy from the AH, and only when it's at a really good price that makes me investing the time to farm it silly. If you save yourself from spending gold on items you can get yourself, you'll find it a lot easier to build up your gold.

Thanks. Yeah the MoP mats seem to go for a decent price with a high deposit and sometimes they won't even sell because I'll be undercut within an hour of posting them up. But I can't resist because I have so many while doing new content in Pandaria.
I THINK my mining is high enough to farm high end azeroth ore and outlands ore. But if not, it's back to pandaland for some "training" :/ :)

Talking ore specifically, I have always found that
Fel Iron Ore
in Hellfire Pennisula is a great one, also in Zul'Drak
Cobalt Ore
is another good seller.
Get the maximum flying speed you can afford if you are going to farm a lot.

there's almost always a shortage of fel iron
This. That's how I made most of my money, just farming stacks of Fel Iron. It spawns really quickly, too, so you could make a couple circles of the zone and get a bunch of nodes.
