Going through my battle pets I noticed some things that in my opinion should be changed. Two abilities
Hoof
and
Stampede
are Critter abilities but it makes more sense for them to be Beast abilities. Then there are the pets themselves,
Egbert
should be Flying; the following are the ones listed as Critters that I think it makes more sense for them to be beasts:
Darkmoon Hatchling
Black Lamb
Elwynn Lamb
Fawn
Gazelle Fawn
Little Fawn
Lucky Quilen Cub
Mr. Wiggles
Mulgore Hatchling
Peanut
Pint-Sized Pink Pachyderm
Winter Reindeer
Golden Pig
Lucky
Perky Pug
Silver Pig
and the following are marked as Beasts that I think make more sense for them to be listed as Critters:
Clouded Hedgehog
Bucktooth Flapper
Jungle Grub
Devouring Maggot
Festering Maggot
Mr. Grubbs
Larva
Maggot
Silent Hedgehog
Sumprush Rodent
Vengeful Porcupette
What are other people's takes on this? Does anyone agree?

It's not whether I agree or disagree with you that is the issue. I think Bliz made these decisions so that there would be some variety in race and abilities. Because every race has one that it deals more damage to and another that it deals less damage to, it would be boring if every time you were up against a Critter, then you chose a Beast to fight it.
Of course, pet abilities can be very different. Just because you have a Beast doesn't mean it will have all Beast abilities. One pet comes to mind because I use it for the Celestial Tournament is the Pandaren Water Spirit. It's an Elemental. It should probably be Aquatic, but it's not. Also, it has a lot of abilities that harm Elementals. An Elemental against other Elementals? There must be some perfect combination of pets to use, or some pet mob to use it against that is perfect. I haven't seen it yet though.
So, I'll say again. I believe it is to add variety and more methods of strategy. The formula of 'Beast pet has Beast abilities' gets boring. The formula of 'Beast pet has ______ abilities' is more interesting. Adding the formula '_______ pet has Beast abilities' creates more fun.
