The fourth Alliance-Horde war originally had it's roots in the near-defeat of the Frostwolf at the hands of the Stormpike Guard, who originally desiring only to drive the frostwolf out of their land, had been driven into a cold fury from the massive lose of life. Seeking to avenge the many Stormpike and other heroes sent to aid them dead at frostwolf hands, Vanndar stormpike ordered the Captured Drek'thar executed and the majority killed in battle.
The majority of the horde, enraged by the death of Drek'thar then invaded Alterac Valley and murdered Vanndar Stomrpike and slaughtered the few remaining stormpike guard members not already dead, furthermore. Unfortunately, this overconcentration of forces, combined with the outrage at such an invasion of dwarven land, caused the alliance to retliate in full force, bringing in multiple gunships and completely leveling the horde army in Alterac Valley.
The various factions around Azeroth aligned themselves with one of the two warring superpowers, hoping to tip the balance in the favor of one for various reasons.
3 and a half years into the fighting, the Alliance emerged Victorious, but only by the slightest of degrees. With the horde defeated, there was little time to celebrate.
The resources of Azeroth were nearly gone, the destruction of many parts of it irreparable short of titanic re-ordering, an entire generation dead, cities razed and very little stood.
One year later, the nations comprising the alliance too, collapsed. Now there are various roving warbands, leaders of small bands, seeking only survival and perhaps, one day, to recreate the nation that they once served.

Status of all areas, counterclockwise from the map (Because azeroth is convinently designed).
Northerend
:
All dragon-related areas destroyed after dragons make it clear they will not tolerate the war, resulting combination of radiation bombs, mana bombs, blight, artillery, and various other destructives all unleashed on the dragon aspects leave wyrmrest one of the most devastated areas in the war.
Quel'Thalas
The total destruction of the sunwell and further mana absorption by various creatures brought in by the kirin tor left the blood elves nearly no sources of mana to sate their addiction, while originally a calculated attempt to cause surrender rather than resort to a siege, the blood elves instead turned to fel magic, resulting in a small legion invasion, remains of quel'thalas still have many portals with only loose seals, demons have managed to push through in small numbers. The last few non-wretched blood elves focus on continous summoning to feed their addiction as well as raiding eachother for sources of mana.
Lordaeron
Following the swift defeat of the forsaken in the early days of the war, attempts to cure lordaeron have partially suceeded. Large groups of humans settling the wartorn lands are common, however forsaken still exist in great number underground and skirmishes between the two forces occur constantly.
Gilneas
While the forsaken have been driven out of Gilneas, the large numbers of feral worgen still run rampant, gilneans have retaken much of the land, yet the sole remaining area for the ritual to grant a worgen full control of their wild body is still deep in feral land, newly infected worgen have very low chances of survival.
Khaz'Modan
Relatively untouched by the ravages of the war, Khaz'Modan nontheless felt the brunt of a serious offensive in the first year of the war, trogs and other underground creatures still occupy gnomeregan, the deeprun tram falling into disrepair, however regular transit on foot still occurs.
Stormwind
Post-war stormwind has not seen as many major attacks as other areas, the defias, under new leadership, is attempting to take over the entirety of the area. The city of Stormwind is generally treated as a area for meetings between various larger faction's leaders thanks to it's central nature in the old alliance, large size and comparatively pristine nature.
Pandaria
Under Taran Zhu, the Shado-Pan demanded the alliance and horde take their war out of Pandaria. He and his escort were killed by small group of mounted knights. The august celestials were all killed, Yulon and Xuen by the Alliance and Nizuao and Chi-ji by the horde. Overall pandaria was the target of clear-cutting and stripmining by both factions, leaving it a somewhat desolate area.
South Kalimdor
A site of attempts from both the Explorer's League and Reliquary attempts to find titanic relics, Southern Kalimdor is covered in various holes dug by the two organizations in attempt to gain an upper hand on their foes.
The Barrens
Heavily damaged by warfare, including the year-long second siege of orgrimmar, The barrens is a massive graveyard where some of the largest scale fighting took place, military bridges across the massisve rift still stand, perilous as they may be. Various natives are coming out of hiding, and the very little farmable land left means any trying to survive here have a had road ahead of themselves.
Central Kalimdor
The site of various battles, central kalimdor is the most devastated area of the war, large craters and the ruins of many a military base pockmark the plains
Ashenvale
The southern half of ashenvale has been almost completely deforested, the further north you go the more of the jungle remains intact. Teldrassil is mostly burned down, with still smoldering remains of the massive tree sending out plumes of smoke. Cenarius and many other demigods were killed in the conflict. The majority of Night Elf territory was stormed during the first year.
