Battle.net Update: Upcoming Changes to the Forums

Recently, we introduced our new Real ID feature -www.battle.net/realid/ , a new way to stay connected with your friends on the new Battle.net. Today, we wanted to give you a heads up about our plans for Real ID on our official forums, discuss the design philosophy behind the changes we’re making, and give you a first look at some of the new features we’re adding to the forums to help improve the quality of conversations and make the forums an even more enjoyable place for players to visit.

One important point which I don't believe has been relayed yet is that the switch to showing RealID on the forums will only happen with the new forum systems we're launching for StarCraft II shortly before its release, and a new forum system for World of Warcraft launching shortly before the release of Cataclysm.

All posts here on the current World of Warcraft forums, or any of our classic Battle.net forums, will remain as-is. They won't (and can't) automatically switch to showing a real first and last name.

All posts in the future on the new forum systems will be an opt-in choice and ample warning will be given that you're posting with your real first and last name.

Posts actually mean something when you sign your name at the bottom. Likewise when you're replying to someone with a name. You might feel no qualms telling Omgbeefeater, Level 3 Tauren Druid, that he's full of fail and should kill himself. Now you're <insert your name here>, telling the same thing to David Anderson. Maybe the conversation just got a little more civil. Or maybe you just stopped posting to the forums. Either way, quality won.

To put a users first and last name into the forum is pretty well gonna reduce anyone's intention of posting online. It may begin to be more civil, but it's relevance the population that play their game is going to be reduced even further.

Blizzard this is a 'nuclear launch detected' on yourself. A forum with no posters just means less CM positions.. :s

Part of gamer tradition is your handle/alias.. posting your real name on everything takes the fun out of it, if you accidentally anger the wrong person and they start to track you down... what then? I guess we pay blizzard to give out our personal details. Next our ages maybe?

If I have 15 characters I should be able to create a realid for my email address which gives me an alias of 'RAZIM', so if I post on any of them they all display the overall id rather than a user's real name.

I couldn't care less about the trolls on Blizzards forums. They aren't my problem. There are trolls everywhere in life. It happens. However, I am NOT a big fan of the REAL ID thing, and I believe if Blizzard doesn't get a grip on this very soon and pop out of this fantasy bubble they are in, they are going to self destruct.

Let's put this in a worse case scenario for those of you defending Real ID.

A 12 year old girl posts on the WoW forums, a question about a quest or something. It shows her REAL NAME. A 40 year old basement dweller googles all the REAL NAMES he sees and finds out where she lives, what school she goes to, and worse yet, she only lives the next town over.

REAL ID has no purpose or benefit and needs to go before blizzard finds themselves in a very serious lawsuit.Comment by 52767This post was from a user who has deleted their account.
