Some of Xal'atath most famous wielders make an appearance during during Alleria Windrunner's Hunt for the Harbinger questline. Memories of Zan'do, Modgud, and Natalie Seline can all be found, still obeying Xal'atath's commands.
Xal'atath's Wielders
During the Hunt for the Harbinger questline, Xal'atath sends her forces to attack Telogrus Rift, the shattered world that serves as a base of Void Elves. While most of the attackers are ethereals, three spirit-like "memories" of Xal'atath's former wielders are also present: Zan'do - the Gurubashi troll, Modgud - the Dark Iron sorceress queen, and Natalie Seline - the human priestess who founded the Cult of Shadows.
Since Natalie at least is still alive - as far as we know - these memories suggest Xal'atath harvested imprints of her wielder's souls - presumably from their time together. They may even be similar to the shards of a soul that a mourneblade like Frostmourne is able to collect.
Zan'do
In ancient times, Xal'atath came into the possession of a witch doctor of the Gurubashi tribe - Zan'do. Under the blade's influence, Zan'do discovered the corpse of Kith'ix, a powerful C'Thrax - one of the Old Gods' generals during the Black Empire. Guided by Xal'atath's whispers, he began to make blood sacrifices to awaken the creature, dismembering his own followers with the dagger before burying her in Kith'ix's hide. Presumably, the creature killed the one who raised him - later, when other trolls visited the site, all that remained of Zan'do and his followers were bones that had been picked clean. Kith'ix went on to rally the aqir in war against the trolls - it was eventually defeated by the Amani tribe, who built the temple city of Zul'Aman over its remains.
If players attack the memory of Zan'do, he references the blood sacrifices he made - of course, it was all in pursuit power.
Zan'do says: THEIR blood for MY power!
Modgud
Perhaps the most significant memory is that of Modgud, once queen of the Dark Iron Dwarves. Wife of Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan, Modgud was a powerful sorceress in her own right - even more so once she came into possession of Xal'atath. During the War of the Three Hammers, Modgud led an army against the Wildhammer capital of Grim Batol. Guided by Xal'atath's influence, Modgud performed a powerful dark ritual that brought the shadows of Grim Batol to life - filling the city with such overwhelming corruption, the Wildhammer inhabitants would be forced to abandon their home. (Later, Dark Iron who settled in the city would become corrupted themselves, transformed into the mostrous Void-dwarves known as Skardyn.)
Despite her powerful magic, Modgud still lost the battle - during a confrontation with the Wildhammer thane, Khardros, Xal'atath appeared to abandon the Dark Iron queen in her hour of need.
When we face Modgud's memory, it calls out the same phrase that is said to be Modgud's dying words.
Modgud says: You promised... You promised, you promised, you promised!
Natalie Seline
Once a bishop from Stormwind, it was Natalie Seline who founded the Cult of Forgotten Shadows - a faction of Shadow Priests that believe the Void is needed to balance the Light. Like most priests, Natalie started out despising the Void. After the First War, Natalie heard rumors of an otherworldly blade wielded by the orcs, and resolved to seek it out so that she could destroy it. Of course, the blade was Xal'atath. Before she could destroy it, Natalie came to believe she needed to study it first - so that she could understand its power. Through her studies, Natalie came to believe in the importance of balance between the Void and the Light - a heretical belief that went on to form the foundation of her teachings.
In time, Natalie was betrayed by some of her own followers, who conspired to murder her and take the blade from her. Though they believed themselves successful, Natalie actually survived the attack by sending her spirit into the Void. During the events of
Legion
, Shadow Priests were officially permitted to join the Priest Order Hall, and Natalie spirit was recovered by the High Priest of the Conclave. As far as we know, she remains alive and well to this day. Alleria may want to consider looking her up.
Natalie Seline says: The Void is filled with many whispers! And hers is loudest of them all.
