Ok, a few things about this *exasperating* quest:
1. The mobs have a buff called timberhusk that decreases damage taken by 80%
2. Line up a keg such that the mob is directly on the other side of the keg and trigger it...it should roll to the mob and apply the 'keg bomb' debuff that makes them flammable.
3. The guys on the ridges are firing flaming arrows after something gets keg bombed, but it DOES NOT always hit the mob directly...sometimes the fire hits off to the side...so you have to pull the mob into the fire to ignite them and remove the timberhusk buff.
4. NOTE that the fire debuff lasts for around 4 seconds and then they get the timberhusk buff back.

something that'll make this easier for most people: their buff can be dispelled by player abilities, or it will be removed when they take any fire damage, not just from the npc's fire arrows.

Okay, simple:

Find a keg, pull a bug toward the keg. Kick the keg and it'll break on the bug. Archers will light a fire when the keg bursts. Move to bug so he's standing in the fire. Win.

I tried doing this quest the 'right' way. Pulled a couple of bugs, kicked the barrel onto em, ran into the fire and noted that they had the debuff.

Aaaand they lost a bit of health. That was it.

Then I said screw it and just shot em all in the face.

The idea for this quest is to pull a pack of mobs and click the Keg Bombs while facing them, so their buff will be removed. Though you can dispell their buff. So it's easier if you do that.
If you're playing priest you can use Dispel Magic, Purge if you're Shammy, Tranquilizing Shot for hunters and last but not least Shield Slam for Warriors.

I believe its worth mentioning that the barrel travels in the direction YOU are facing, when you click on it, not the direction the barrel is facing (Depending on which side you click it)

If you have the Ban's Bag of Bombs, from the quest Pitching In, it does aoe fire damage. It removes the debuff without dealing with the kegs/arrows.

I was just trying to find mobs that had low hp and then killed them in normal way. The barrels didn't work in a way I thought.

After you kick a barrel at a mob, the flames you need to get him in are a little bit away from him. Move a bit into the flames and the bug will go down much easier.

here's the breakdown.
The mobs start off with a buff called "Timberhusk."
Once you roll the barrel and it hits them they get a debuff called "Keg Bomb."
After they have the keg bomb debuff fire arrows will shoot nearby and create a fire on the ground. (Here is the key part), you must kite the mobs into the fire where their timberhusk will fall off and they will get a new debuff called "Pitch-tipped arrow."
The main thing is to get "Timberhusk" off with fire. As has been pointed out, any spell, trinket, or object will work, including the fire on the ground once the bug has keg bomb.

This quest reminded me of some 'fun' quests you had back in vanilla.

Fun idea, lousy implementation, overcomplicated, random results/bugs.
So instead of fun the quest became more like annoying and frustating.

Like most ppl advice on this page; if you have some fire damage ability or buff steal, use it and then kill the buggers. A lot easier that way :-)

Still bugged. Sometimes it works like a charm and they're dead quickly. Most of the time, it just won't work and you're running around searching for another barrel while the insect beats on you. It helps to concentrate on mobs near the shado-pan npcs at the crossroads. Otherwise, if you have to fight them alone and the barrels don't do the trick, again, then you might be dead.

OK, I think I have this down.

1) Barrel Rolling: Snuggle right up to the barrel opposite the direction you want it to roll. Aim your toon at your target (put target in centerline of screen). Click nearest you on the center of the barrel. One or more of these things make it go where you want it to go; not sure which, but using all of them I could hit what I wanted to hit.

2) After the barrel explodes and surrounds your mob with flame, target it and watch its buffs; if it continues to have a yellow fist buff after 5-10 seconds, move on to the next target. IF the yellow fist disappears and one or more torch icons appear, feel safe to attack; the target should go down easily.

3) Don't get discouraged, and don't waste time on mobs that don't drop their yellow fist buff.

FORGET THE BARRELS! Just blast needed number of opponents outright. I found this much easier than trying to locate a handily placed barrel and hope the explosion occurred when needed. You do not have to employ the barrels as far as i could tell. I used one or two and then discovered the easy way.

Yes, this is an annoying quest. Note that other sources of fire damage work as well, though: if you're a class with Fire damage open to you, such as a mage, warlock, shaman or hunter, just use any Fire spell on the mob as an opener and they'll die like any other. You do not have to use the barrels to get quest credit for the kill (as of 5.1).

You can use Spellsteal as a mage to get rid of their buff instead of using the kegs. :D I actually preferred it. :) The kegs are quite spread out, but spellstealing, I could just stand around next to the quest givers the whole time. Spellsteal first, and you'll get their Timberhusk buffs, and they do stack. So much so that I was taking 1 damage from their attacks, and so decided to pull all those I needed with spellsteal, and then AoE them down. ^^ It went by much faster than trying to use the kegs on them.

Don't bother with the kegs, they seem bugged and hard to aim. Instead just ride around find the ones that are low on life from fighting pandas and just wittle them down. Even if they only have a sliver of life left you'll still get credit for the kill.

For any Death Knight doing this quest, it becomes very easy when you have Glyph of Icy Touch. I've found the barrels to be too buggy.

Warlocks, use your observer/felhunter to remove it. Mages, use your spellsteal and priests can dispell, it's much easier for these classes.

Thanks for the hint on pulling them into the fire, for other classes (like my DK) once I pulled them into the fire it vanished and I was able to take them down quickly.

Two things.

1. It doesn't matter which way the barrels are facing. If you face the mob you want to hit when you click on the barrel, it will roll to the mob and hit it thus removing the buff. It doesn't have to be handily placed. You just have to face your character toward the mob you want to hit with the barrel.

2. All class specific magic removers work also. Tranq shot for hunters, spell steal for mages, the priest one, all of them. If you are one of these classes you can bypass the barrels entirely. But if not, refer to #1 and this quest is easy peasy.

Their protection buff can be dispelled and even spell stolen by mages.

Interesting thing is that it stacks - so after 5 buffs (each lasting 2 minutes) my mage was getting hit for ONE damage from any attack/spell xD

You do not need the barrels! You can use the G91 Landshark, crafted by engineers and gifted by Blingtron, on the bugs. Also, any fire damage will take the protection spell off. Much easier than using the barrels.

By the way, for those of you struggling with the barrels: Just hit them with a fire spell, etc.
Mages (Fireball), hunters (Explosive trap) and shamans (Lava burst) for example will find this easy.
However if you do not have a fire spell (Death Knight), then you can either run the barrels, or you can use a trinket you were given earlier (Ban's Bag of Bombs).

Many of you probably already know this, but as a Mage. I spellstealed their buff which gives me 80% reduced damage taken. Then I just pulled as many I could and frost novaed them and used Flamestrike, which removes their buff, then I nuked them down.

This can be done over and over due to fast respawns and it'll give you very nice xp/hour ~~as well as they drop Mote of Harmony.~~

It is litterally impossible to die when you get these buffs. I highly recommend doing this :)

~~I also did not complete the quest, since it's a very nice method to farm motes, so I still have it in my questlog for farming.~~

Ok so so here are some details that may help:
The mobs start out with a visible buff that makes killing them very hard and time-consuming; I did kill several without removing the buff so it is possible;
To remove the buff (the way the quest wants you to, when you don't have a spell to do it and don't have the other objects that other commenters say you can use):
kick a barrel towards a mob or group of mobs;
if you get it close enough, a good guy will shoot an arrow and cause a fire, possibly a ways away from the mob;
aggro the mob and lead him into the fire - you out of fire, him in it until his buff burns away;
kill him - at this point it's quite easy to kill him.
One commenter said simply kick a barrel towards and mob and it would work; I found several times that no arrow was fired and no fire occurred so no buff was removed when the barrel didn't stop near enough to a mob.
If you start fighting a mob and he doesn't go down fairly easily, the buff is not gone and you can either kill him the hard way or you can run and fairly easily run out of his aggro and try again.
Note that the fire that will burn away the buff is not the fire that often appears right at/on a mob - try to see an arrow strike and that's the fire you want.
The mobs are not terribly aggressive - you can roll a barrel to a group and then aggro just one to lead to the fire without to much chance of aggroing several mobs at one time.

I didn't really read the entire quest about the kegs. These things have buffs on them which takes forever to kill. When I noticed the buff they had on them I used my Dispel Magic (I'm a shadow Priest). The Dispel Magic took away the buff and they died pretty quickly.

This quest is rather simple when you get the hang of it.

1. It's up to you to kill the mobs, the keg bomb itself does no damage to them, it just covers them in flammable ale.
2. Fire damage is what removes the buff (called Timberhusk). So if you're a class that uses fire abilities or you're an engineer with bombs - go ahead and use those as your method of killing.
3. If your class doesn't have any fire abilities, you have to pull the mob into the fire patches right next to the mob and the buff will be removed.
4. Now finish the mob off yourself. Notice that the mobs are unlootable.

This quest is ^&*!ING AWFUL.

Getting the alignment for the barrels to hit the mantid is chaotic, and even when they do hit them and the fire arrows land, sometimes it doesn't even do anything and you need to move them around to break the barrier, and THEN you only have a short time before the barrier comes back up.

As many have said, one of the worst quests in the game, even more then any of the collecting body parts questions.

This is honestly one of the worst quest I have experienced in this game...

It is hard to line up barrels sometime
I only had one archer fire the flaming arrow, and even then I had to kite the mob to the flame

My tip is to find mobs that are already at low HP, there should be plenty of them, and just kill them off.

This quest is a nightmare in Chromie time if you're not aware of what to do.

The kegs by themselves do nothing. You gotta have a way to do fire damage to remove the Timberhusk buff, or else you'll be spending dungeon boss amounts of time just to kill one of these things. Thankfully I was on my Mage and had Spellsteal and Fire Blast handy. Supposedly there are some Shado-Pan archers shooting fire arrows but I sure didn't see any near Taran Zhu.

I found killing the mobs that were already being attacked to be far less time consuming and less frustrating than trying to follow Bliz's overly ambitious mechanic.

Description

The mantid coming across the bridge have thick carapaces that shrug off most of our attacks. They have a weakness though: fire.

Lao-Chen's men brought kegs to the battlefield for exactly this purpose. Kick the kegs into groups of mantid, and Lao-Chin's archers will light them up.

They should be easy to finish off from there.
