After you complete Francis' quests, Master Shang will appear and give you this quest.

The Great White Plainshawks are in the air and you will need to use the lasso provided by Master Shang in order to jump on its back. After a few moments, you will be flung off its back and into its sharp talons, which you need to get out of quickly because you take damage.

Once you are in the talons, a button should appear on your screen (much like in the Ultraxion/Deathwing fight in Dragon Soul) that you need to click in order to jump on the back again.

Rinse and repeat until the plainshawk is dead. Shang Thunderfoot can be found down the path and to the right tending to his gigantic watermelon behind his hut in Shang's Stead.

Go to the high point at Shang's Stead, (The mini map will show the blue area, head for the pointy part of it). Lasso the closest White Hawk and ride it's back. You can use all of your direct attacks, AOE and if you have them, armor or protection buffs.
Keep hitting it until it throws you off. click on the button that appears below you to release you from it's claws and continue to fight it until it is dead. Sorry to say, the Watermelon Bomb does not work on it = ( When you kill it, you will land gently but be ready for the Thieving plainshawk and thieving wolves that will be wherever you land!

Using UI addons such as Bartender will make you unable to see the button to get back on the plainshawk's back. You will have to go esc>key bindings>scroll down to "Action Bar functions">and bind extra action button 1 to any key. Use this key in the place of the button in the default interface.

Everyone is making this seem complicated.

Look up when you get the quest, locate one of the Great White Plainhawks. Use the Lasso provided.

Click on the bird and DPS. If the talons get you click on the climb back up button.
Repeat till dead.

Don't vanish as a rogue or feign death. Also as a druid you will morph to human form so you have to change forms every time you get up the claws.

Thank you for the tip on the button. I could have been there all day. The button appears on the far right so I didn't see it until you pointed it out. It looks exactly like the DS buttons. Thanks.

I have completed The missing Master and Nessingway's Safari and been all around the Valley. I have gone back to Pang's Stead five or six times. I have not been given this quest and hence cannot find any more quests until I do.

Is there a pre-req I have missed. I got the achievement for finishing all the Jade Forest quests. I did not skip any there that I know of.

I have looped the whole valley several times and done an extensive search near Pang's Stead and I cannot get this quest.

I am probably missing something easy but I cannot imagine what it is.

I was having trouble finding the quest giver.
Zygor shot me off to shang's stead and he isnt there.
The quest is given right by the shepherd boy. Do not leave.
Shang will come up and then you get the quest

To turn in the quest, you need to go the Shang's stead

I died three times on this quest as I could not find the button. I disabled some but not all addons, and maybe it was still hidden. On the third try I aggroed a 2nd hawk and managed to kill the hawk while I was in his talons. When I defeated him, he dropped me on the mountain and the 2nd one I aggroed came down and killed me. Then I could not get back to my corpse, because it was on top of the mountain.

Still I never saw a button, so I recommend you disable ALL your graphic affecting addons.

For those who use Bartender, all you have to do is enable your extra action bar. The button will show up then.

Ah! I saw that button to get on the Plainshawk's back, but I didn't realize what it was. I was too busy trying to stay alive. Thanks for pointing out the obvious. Some of us need it.

Note: If you, like me, use an addon like Dominos, and do not see the UI button to get back onto the bird's back, you can use the "Extra Action Button" macro (this button worked during the Ultraxion fight in Dragon Soul, as well as many other cases where you need to use a special action button).

The macro is very simple. Create it, and pull it to a button on your action bar.

/click ExtraActionButton1

That's it!

In the event you cannot see the button enabling you to climb back onto the bird, click the Leave Vehicle button. You wont fall, but it will reset your vehicle bar, and also the ability that goes with it.

You'll encounter Chen Stormstout on the way to turn in the quest. He tells you, "<player>, we meet again! You looking for Shang? I think he's in back, polishing his melon."

finally completed this , i didnt know what to do at first but i used wowhead and figured it out ,problem is, i landed a a virmen attacked me at low health lol

I can see the button to climb back on and use it over and over and over again lol
6 birds so far even exited game to restart...
I am unable to attack the birds or do any damage :( Eventually the one I'm on despawns & dumps me in varying degrees of "Oooops! Gravity works!"
75g repair bill so far & one frustrated ticket lol
Edit: Finally got it on Bird #7 lol realized what the problem was when I discovered I'd been disconnected & reconnected to BattleNet several times. When BattleNet stopped hanging my attacks went thru... YAY!

If you finish the quest and end up on the top of one of those very peaky mountains with no way down except jump, don't jump. The lasso is still in your bags, rope another bird, let it fly you away a little, and "leave vehicle". You will parachute down safely.

First off your LASSO is in your bag...move it to your buttons to lasso the Great White Plainshawk. Then when you get caught in the talons the extra button appears I clicked on it once and it put me up on its back again to dps it down.

I use dominos, and had no idea what was going on as to how to get back on the birds back, but I play a warlock and just life drained, DoT'd and repeated until dead. it works quite well

I don't know if there is something I'm missing here but every time I try doing this quest I get it down to about 1/3 health and the bird drops me. I can't click to get back on so I fall and die. Every time. I submitted a ticket a couple of days ago but no resolution yet. Maybe it's a maye thing? Any help or insight appreciated.

Update - switched from frost to arcane and was able to complete it first try. Must be a bug with frost.

I'm trying to do this quest myself and can't seem to get passed it. Every time I die I try to find the bird I was on - I get it about half dead before I'm killed - but I can't find the same bird so I'm always starting fresh. I'm really frustrated and am wondering if there's a special trick I haven't tried yet. I'm using all my spells - especially the one that turns the victim green and increases my health as it's used - and I click on the button to get back on the bird's back as soon as I drop into its mouth. Is there a specific spell or combination of spells I should be using?

Note: I really wish I could use one of my minions on this one.

I switched my talents to arcane and that worked. I got through it in one go this time!

This quest appears to be bugged for casters. My destruction warlock could not attack the bird that I was riding, all of my spells kept telling me I couldn't do that right now... I rode the first bird for about 10 minutes before it dumped me, and another for about 5, and another for about 5, eventually after falling over and over I gave up. I had no problem clicking the icon to stay on its back, there was just no way for me to attack, I couldn't even melee swing.

as a night elf bal druid i had no problem. altho my pointer did not show a blade, my spells worked just fine. just started casting. when you are grasped in claws, just click the button that says release and your back on top. didn't even have to heal.

First time on this quest I rode the hawk... saw the button appear to jump back on top of it... and rode it for like 5 minutes... and couldn't see the point. I was like WTF is the point of this? Eventually it dropped me to my death and I came here and found that you could target the hawk while on its back. So you click on it and at that point you can attack it. Give it everything you've got and keep jumping on its back when it claws you, and eventually you'll kill it and it'll drop to the ground and you'll survive the fall.

For hunters, while on this quest, you are able to tame the Great White Plainshawk while you are mounted on it. However, be aware: you're high enough in the air that doing so means you'll probably plummet to your death, and you won't get credit; you'll still have to lasso a second plainshawk. But you have to admit: that's a tame with *style*.

If you use Bartender4 or another actionbar manager, you may have changed the default position of your "ExtraActionBar" to a less conspicuous position (like I have), then you might completely have overlooked it (like I have) and died at your first attempt (like I have) before coming over here to figure out what's with this "bugged" quest (yup, like I did)
Anyway, if you're using BT4 left click the BT4 icon and put your "ExtraActionBar" at a more practical position (like I did)
Have fun killing the bird ;)

Seems like it's broken with the pre-patch - it disconnected me every time I tried to use the quest item. The same happened to my friend.
The solution is to pull the mob and kill it normally, worked for me.

Encountered a problem with this quest. The moment I lasso-ed the bird, I would be disconnected. Happened to my partner as well. After several rounds of troubleshooting, we quit our current party and tried the quest again. It worked.

How the mission goes: You use the lasso now in your inventory to grab one of the birds circling above. After a little bit, the bird grabs you with it's talons and you get the prompt "Get back onto the plainshawk's back!". there SHOULD be a button that appears and clicking that puts you back on it's back. BUT that button never showed for me. So what I did was make a macro of '/click ExtraActionButton1' and every time I was flipped over, just hit the macro and boom right back on top. Hope it helps someone!

Nie wystarczy wskakiwać na grzbiet ptaka, trzeba za każdym razem walczyć jak ze zwykłym przeciwnikiem. W przeciwnym razie nie ubywa mu życia i nie ginie, tylko ciebie zrzuca i to ty giniesz po około 15 razach.

It is not enough to jump on the bird's back, you have to fight as with an ordinary opponent each time. Otherwise, his life is not diminished and he does not die, he only sheds you and you die after about 15 times.

You, stranger. You helped the rest of my family. Francis is like a second son to me.

Show my apprentice what it means to lack fear. Use this rope to lasso and defeat one of the great white hawks above us.
