I recommend not dropping your costume and hitting Fan of Knives when the room goes Cathedral on you just because you "want to get in on some of the action." You will die instantly and fail to complete the quest.

Just a heads up. At the end, an "escape portal" opened up for me, so I jumped through it. And now cannot seem to finish the quest. Apparently there is more to see after the portal opens, so don't jump through it right away or else you'll have to do it again.

edit: I just did it again, and this time when the portal opened, a guy said "go through the portal" and that's it, quest done. The first time, the portal opened about 15 seconds early, with no dialog. So if the portal opens before anyone says anything, just wait until they talk before you jump through.

second edit: the seocnd time, someone was already doing it, so I went in to watch and got the quest completed dialogue even though someone else was doing the quest. So if someone else is already doing it when you get there, you don't have to wait for them to finish, you can just watch and get it when they do. You might miss some cool storyline though.

I walked in after someone else had started and was able to finish the quest and go through the portal. If you can't find Tirion just check in the Cathedral to see if the action has already started.

Tidbit of useless information: If you randomly have to go AFK and miss the portal, your combat log will say "The Lich King's fury instantly kills <your name>". No damage, just instadeath. I recommend not testing this out on your own, because all the zealots DO respawn in the time it takes to run, and they hit for 2300+ on cloth. Owie. >.<

You will find Tirion in a blue bonfire to you right with other 3 NPCs. If you can't find him there.. he is probably inside.. in the floor, in front of the Lich King.

All you need to do is wait till the server reset. I spoke with a GM 3 days ago and he told me that when someone already started the event you are not able to do it again (in the same day).. he didn't corfirm to me if this is a BUG. Wait for Server Reset and do it.

I had a little problem finding Tirion too.
Face the entrance to the building at The Cathedral of Darkness, and there should be a blue bonfire to the right of the entrance (entrance as in at the top of the stairs) and Tirion should be facing the fire with 2 Disguised Crusaders, talk to Tirion and start the event.

It seems as though there would be some sort of follow-up to this quest but as far as I can tell there is not. The chain provides some much-needed background for people who are mildly interested in the story but have not played the Warcraft 3 games. In the end, at least the line lets us know we don't have to feel bad about killing the Lich King when we get around to it.

I, being a slight idiot, stuck around as long as possible to see if anything else happened - and so missed the portal >.<

Lich King's Fury is a few (7 i think) second cast, is AOE insta-kill... but interestingly, he is attackable during the cast!

Although, unless you have a large number of raid grps you are NOT getting down the last 30% or so of his health in 7 seconds :)

Someone messed this up bad on my server(Uldum), all the npcs are just standing there grunting at the lich king with tirion on the ground, and appears to be bugged and never resetting. Am I missing something perhaps?

Okay....I'm infront the catedral. I put the hood on, i go to the right at the blue fire, and NOBODY is there, i go inside the cathedral, and tirion is laying down on the floor, NOTHING is happening, I guess someone started the quest but when does tirion RESPAWN outside again? im waiting and nothing happens and im getting irritated...since when we gotta wait for server reset? you guys must be joking....

Because I didn't see this anywhere, you turn this in back at Tirion at Crusader's Pinnacle 79,71. I finished the event and saw no portal as mentioned in above comments. Everyone just disappeared, so I was quite confused.

I just managed to start the event for this quest even if it was bugged.

When I entered the Cathedral of Darkness I noticed 3 Chosen Zealots at the entrance standing still as they were frozen. I pulled some non elite mobs inside, I found them just outside the cathedral on the right, and the 3 Zealots slowly started to walk towards the altar as I was kiting the mobs towards it.

When they reached the altar the quest started and everything went smooth.

At the end of it all, i stood alone and i saw that the Lich king was charging up "The Lich Kings Fury" i was like "ok... whatever" and divine shielded myself but i still got 1-shot X_x so you better run through that portal FAST!

Okay, I'm confused. I did this today, everything went swimmingly til it was over. I hung around when Arthas started charging up the fury spell, and I clicked the portal a second after it hit me... When I went to Tirion at Crusader's Pinnacle, the quest didn't seem to have completed. Am I right in assuming you're supposed to leave before he finishes charging fury?

There is indeed some kind of bug which freezes the event. Killing all the remaining cultists might be doable in some cases, but for me there were dozens of them, and they respawned before I could lure them all to the Ebon Blade npc's. So I will just have to try again later.

When you enter the cathedral with Tirion and his friends, three cultists will bring Lich king's frozen hearth in and leave. Soon The Lich king himself comes and recognises you. Tirion will destroy his hearth and you are surrounded. Darion Mograine with his Death Knights including Koltira and Thassarian will come to save you, but will leave through the escape portal they create. After that Lich king raises and starts casting Fury of The lich king. It will probably kill everyone around but I left before he finished casting...

2. Go to the stairs and kill Cultist Acolyte until you get Cultist Acolyte's Hood

3. Put on the hood

4. Talk to Tirion to begin

I made a small test. I had this hunter doin the quest when i got there, when a landed my mount Lich king was just entering the Cath. I put SoulStone up and watched event, when the cultists attacked i died instantly. I waited a bit to use SS and used when Frienfly NPCs joined the fight. Luckly i had the quest completed! Didnt have to bother getting disguise and could even use the portal back they made for the Hunter.

I believe if u dont release if u die u will be able to complete too and wont have to wait. Presuming u dont mind the run back or have same resources as me ;)

I've always entertained the notion that maybe after the Lich King is dead, somehow, some way, Arthas would be redeemed. I even thought that there would be an expansion called "The Redemption of Arthas".

Up till this quest, I still wanted to believe that Arthas could somehow be redeemed.

But this quest finally revealed that there will be no such thing.

Matthias Lehner is an anogram. If you rearrange the letters properly you will produce "Arthas Menethil."

If you are a Rogue I would suggest NOT being in stealth while the event is going on. The first time I did it I was stealthed and the quest got bugged at the point where the room agros. It got stuck and all of the Acolytes just stood there going "HUH HUH HUHHUH HUH HUH HUH HUH..." I unstealthed, nothing happened. I took off the hood and promptly died. Second time with no stealth and it went fine.

By the way if you remove the buff that makes you friendly during the moment Tirion hits Arthas heart, you are able to attack him, He has about 8 millions heatlh, he uses some kind of heartstone spell to get out of there. it has a long casting time, and I did not tried to interrup it

I was slightly (very slightly) dissapointed with this quest, because while it's REALLY cool, this is the only time we see arthas, in wich he does not has any voice acting, all the other lich king apereances are acompanied with full voice.

that been said, I did this quest in patch 3.0.8 and as many plp told me patch 3.2 added voices to many voiceless quests like the battle for the undercity, so who knows, maybe now this quest has the voice acting it should had had from day 1.

neverteless, even without voices, this is a frikking awesome quest, one that is a MUST-HAVE for every horde or alliance players out there.

Looks like in 3.2.2a the "Lich King's Fury" spell doesn't instantly kill you anymore... I was standing there like Ralph Wiggum with my finger in my nose not paying attention while the spell was being cast and forgot to click on the port. He cast the spell on me, but nothing happened.

Then I checked the combat log and saw, "The Lich King's Lich King's Fury instantly kills Yp" but I was still standing there digging away, alive as can be. So alas, I had to fly all the way back Tirion instead...

This quest was a total let down... I thought something cool would happen. You have to stand there for an hour while they talk, then you stand there some more until the Ebon Blade shows up, then they kill some people (and if you take the hood off you get killed, so you stand there some more) and then you leave. Such an anti-climactic quest chain.

OK I couldn't find any help from the prior posts so I will share what I found out. Tirion Fordring is standing on the right side of the entrance by the bon fire. There is no marker the easiest way to find him to to mouse over him and you will see a dialog bubble over his char. Click on him and you will be given the link to continue on the quest. You just follow him inside hang out listen to the dialog watch the fight then click on the escape portal when it shows up. That's it.

1. go to the citadel at 42, 78
2. kill cultists on stairs until the hood drops. Then go to top of stairs.
3. You'll see a large blue flame pyre on either side of the entrance. Fordring is with two others, by the right side pyre (or at least he was by me). (Note: others have observed that if Fordring is not present, he is probably inside already in the event. You can put your hood on and go in and get credit.)
4. Keep your hood on. You need do nothing further except follow and watch (popcorn is good here, but don't go afk).
5. Follow Fordring (this is a slow, boring process with long pauses when nothing is said or done)
6. Eventually, DarthVader...erm LichKing shows up and kills Fordring.
7. This guy Morgrain shows up with a bunch of good guys, they kill the cultists, and then opens a portal
8. Go through the portal. You will get a quest completion message. The portal takes you back to the quest giver for turn in. The End.

Tried completing this today, but as soon as Tirion struck the heart and the zealots ran up, everything froze in place. I waited a while, ran out of the room, took the hood off (while out of the room) nothing. Is it a bug? I didn't get the credit and LK is still kneeling there :|

- Next day I log in, all the Zealots are back at the tables, Lich King is still kneeling there with the Crusaders in fighting stance around Tirion. :| help me.

My personal favourite Lich King quest chain, I'd rate this nearly as good as the quests you do for early Tirion in the eastern plaguelands.

I won't reveal the details of the vanilla quests here because they are so awesome, but if you have not done them then you really should visit the highlords earlier self and start the chain, it seems like tedious grind at first but it pays off if you are a warcraft lore fan

If you have lower level alts then I'd recommend doing this at the level the quest was intended for with similar levels, it really is that good.

If you get there and Tirion is inside laying on the ground then the quest is bugged from someone else doing it. A GM said they "would look into it". I had hoped he would be able to rest it like they have done on a few others that bug out but it does not look like it.

On a side note, if you really want a picture with the Lich King, just take off your hood and pull the mobs outside. The troops that are there will kill them and your free to go in and stand next to the Lich King.

At the very end of this quest The Lich King casts a spell called Lich King's Fury which will instantly kill any players that did not take the portal. However, if you happen to be a Shaman, Grounding Totem will prevent you from dying.

I discovered this when I was doing Loremaster of Northrend. I walked into the Cathedral and noticed the RP sequence was almost finished and saw Arthas casting the spell. I reflexively laid Grounding Totem and... to my surprise I was not killed. I started the RP again and recorded to confirm it was Grounding Totem.

Funny moment when I did this on my alt: I started the cutscene as normal and walked in with Tirion. With nothing better to do, I watched it unfold, with a bit of lag- there seemed to be long pauses between the /says and npcs moving around, but hey, I just stood at the pew and waited. Meanwhile, for some reason a Blood Elf paladin walks into the cathedral watching Tirion and myself. As I was a human, I just watched and wondered what she was doing; I can only suppose she wanted to do this quest and wasn't sure what to do. However, to her misfortune she didn't have a hood on, and a few seconds after she walks over to me she aggros every Cultist in the row behind us and dies before she realizes what's happening.
Ah, WoW. There's always entertainment in some form or another.

wow, it's true what they say, wowhead is filled with morrons.. this is a site people visit to get help, not to read stupid pointless comments. thats what forums are made for.

Kill Cultist Acolyte's until you get a hood drop, wear it and speak to highlord tirion fordring (located by the bonfire to the right if you stand facing the door). follow him for about 10min and there you go.

I have the hood. Tirion is not outside the Cathedral, nor inside, not near either bonfire. I've looked for him with hood on and with hood off. I dropped the quest & picked it up again. Still cant find him.

How to do it
1. kill the cultist near the cathedral til you get the hood.
2. Use the hood
3. talk to Tirion. He's by the fire with a couple of acolytes at 44,76.
He is disguested as one of them, and you have to talk to him normaly
4. follow him and watch
5 to the portal and complet the quest

If you click the portal immediately when it appears, you only miss a tiny bit of dialogue.

Highlord Darion Mograine says: Quick, through the portal! He won't stay down for long.
Thassarian says: Looks like whatever Tirion did put some hurt on the Lich King. It's too bad we can't finish him off....
Highlord Darion Mograine says: Patience.... We will get our chance soon enough. Be content that for once, it is Tirion who is in our debt.

Then if you still hang around, all the Crusaders and Death Knights evaporate, the Lich King gets up and starts casting "The Lich King's Fury." When I saw that I hightailed it out of there before I could see just how furious he was. :O

Side note: If you were curious who's in the Death Knight party but couldn't see names, it's Mograine, Thassarian, and Koltira Deathweaver with a bunch of unnamed DKs.

To get this quest(or start this quest line), you must do Where Dragons Fell given by Matthias Lehner at coordinates 71.6 x 37.6 in Icecrown.

I was stuck at 138 quests out of 140 for this zone until I found this one. I do not know what phasing is involved or how far into the other questlines you must go, this is just simply what finally put me over 140 for the achievement Icecrown: The Final Goal.

Did this at level 85, when all the cultist attacked I took my hood off, got in a few rounds of Howling Blast, and put my hood back on before I got my a** handed to me. Darion killed them, and I got the spoils. (Just be sure to loot and use the escape portal before Lich King one shots you.)

He's to the right of the entrance - you can use "/tar highlord" if you are having trouble.

Seems to be badly bugged and exploited atm

I cant start the encounter cause some guy is farming the cultists and the Ebon blade guys are stuck at the door its been like it for days.

So frustrating cause this is one of my favourite quests

He's north of the entrence, next to a big blue fire, together with other cultists. He's dressed like them. (You must wear a hoodie)

Just in case anyone is wondering where to go when this quest ends, head back to the Shadow Vault. I was stuck at 133 and found this quest line thanks to a comment posted further back :-) Should be enough to complete.

When I did the quest and the Ebon Blade charged in to the rescue there was one Orc who was way behind the pack, strolling nonchalantly into the cathedral. He didn't make it to the altar until well after his compatriots had cleared the cultists. He might have bugged out, but just him casually walking past the temporarily neutralized Lich King right up to the party really stole the show.

Kill the mob on the stairs outside. Put on the costume. Go towards the cathedral and then on the right hand side is Tirion. Talk to him and let the RP begin.

Went back to do this for loremaster/rep purposes at 110 and the event bugged out on me as soon as Thassarian and his crew arrives -- they showed up and the whole thing stopped advancing. Not sure why; I was just standing next to Fordring waiting for it to finish, so I don't think I did anything to cause it to bug?

Right-clicked the cultist hood buff to drop the disguise, killed all of the elite cultists in the cathedral, and the event proceeded normally from there. Almost definitely not doable if you're level 80 since there's a LOT of them and they would hit pretty hard, but if you're going back to do the old questlines at a higher level or have a guildie willing to help, it's a workaround.

I finished this quest today. A few notes (WITH SPOILERS):

The Cultist Acolyte you'll want to kill is found near the bottom of the stairs. They'll drop the Cultist Acolyte's Hood. Put it on by right-clicking it in your bag. At the top of the stairs (on the right, as you're going up them), you'll see Highlord Tirion Fordring. He and several other undercover "Acolytes" will proceed very slowly into the cathedral, to the front. Notice how all the other legitimate acolytes are kneeling at stone tables? You're headed for one near the far front right-hand side of the room that won't have anyone at it until Tirion and his posse shows up.

The bulk of this quest involves standing around. The first time I ran through it, the dialog cut off halfway through and all relevant parties (Tirion, his posse, etc.) faded. I went back to where I met Tirion at the top of the stairs and told him again I was ready to go. From there the quest ran through without a problem. Here's where it gets spoilery:

Once Tirion's A-Team crashes the party, I couldn't engage any hostiles. I stood around and waited for the fracas to finish, at which point I was able to turn in the quest. I'm a Level 110 Paladin, but I don't see how my advanced level would change the fact that this quest was mostly waiting on Tirion and others to run through their dialog; there was no real combat involved.

The Cliffs' Notes:

Kill the acolyte cultist at the bottom of the stairs.
Put the acolyte hood on and meet Tirion at the top right of the stairs.
If the dialog stops abruptly and the relevant NPCs fade, go back to where you found Tirion at the top of the stairs and start over from there.
Stand by until the quest is finished.

After restarting this quest 3 times, I finally got that you have to talk to Tirion to start it. Tell him, "I'm Ready"

The suggestion here and elsewhere that this quest can be gamed - to pickup some sweet cloth and gold by switching out of the disguise at the last moment to score a hit on the stacked mobs.... waste of time with Chromie adjusted questing here. Bit of cloth, a few gold. That's about it. Not worth the bother or the risk of mistiming the cloak removal.

This is one of those "stand around and watch them rp" quests, for anyone who was as confused as I was.

Kill a cultist outside. Tirion is outside on the right, disguised. You have to go stand beside him to send everyone in to let the dialogue start. They patrol in without him, but he respawns with them inside toward the front right. Basically just stand there and watch as the LK runs in, all the cultists run in, Thassarian yells, and Darion sends you out with a death gate.

Description

Just this morning, my scouts informed me of a Cult of the Damned procession leaving from Icecrown Citadel to the Cathedral of Darkness, bearing an artifact.

And now I learn that it might be Arthas's own heart... a thing containing the last bit of his remaining humanity.

This is a sign of the Light. As long as such an artifact exists, there is a chance that Arthas Menethil can become a man again!

Meet me at the cathedral's entrance. Be sure to bring a cultist's hood -- we're going incognito.
