If you have your Shadow Quality set to High, you may be able to tell which of the cocoons have nerubians in them. Their spidery figures will be silhouetted on the ground in front of the cocoon itself. It may also be visible as a larger shadow if you have your configuration set lower.

Edit: This may be something only those with certain systems will be able to see. I am running Mac OS X and have a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon 1900 XT.

A hint, attack them melee. I casted Siphon Life on the Webbed Crusaders but no Crusaders were freed, then I used my staff on it and it worked fine.

Note for hunters: Do not use your pet to attack/open the webbed crusaders. I had my cat open more than 40 of them without a single crusader being freed; many simply turned up empty (although I got loads of nerubians from others!) before I woke up and started shooting them myself. After that about 1 in 3 contained a crusader. I don't know if this applies to locks' or DKs' minions, but if you find that you're not turning up any crusaders, this would be the reason. You have to hit them yourself.

I found that the absolute best way to complete this quest was to just run around and give each cocoon a single hit with my axe then run to the next one.

If the cocoon contains an enemy, you will be launched through the air, but shouldn't be too far from another cocoon. Just carry on and hit another one and when you eventually uncover a friendly unit, he will grant you Blessing of Kings (I never turn down a free +10% to all stats) and will also cast a heal on you, which will draw aggro from all of the bad guys you have following you (provided you just moved on without hitting them).

Easy and fun quest.

"Blessing of.." That you receive will depend on your class.

If you're melee, you'll get Might, If you're a caster, you'll get wisdom. For classes like Shaman, Hunter etc I'm not too sure, it may or may not then depend on your spec. :-p

Overall, such a courteous gift that they give you for rescuing them, along with the healing.

A note for mages :

Not much of help maybe but you can know if a cocoon has a spider in it or not by casting Living Bomb. If the bomb instantly blows up the cocoon upon landing then its a spider. If the bomb blows the cocoon after two seconds (DoT hits) as it normally should then you know that its not a spider.

If you are a Paladin, use Sense Undead to determine which one have the soldiers in them, or undead spideys.

Freed Crusaders are buggy. Their Holy Light will put you in combat, so if you're mounting or stealthing while you bounce between cocoons, do that before the cast on their Holy Light finishes.

Fun fact: It used to be possible for their Blessing and Holy Light to miss, but either that got hotfixed or I have really bad luck with Cloak of Shadows (possible).

fun trick for feral druids - use faery fire on the cocoons, if there IS a spider, it will pop out of the ground without throwing you back 20 yards. if there is a soldier, it counts as setting him free.

Their blessing of might (for my warrior, anyway) stacked with my improved battleshout, had a bloodbath with both buffs up.

As a paladin, you can use the new Hand of Reckoning to destroy the cocoons from a safe distance - they only have 1 HP.

I kept attacking the NPC's Called "Webbed Crusaders", but either one of two things would happen, it would just die and nothing happens, no freed NPC, or I'd get knocked back and an ambusher would spawn, Help? :\

The free buff is great for solo questing in and around Icecrown - Stormpeaks - Crystalsong basin and anywhere else you can think of.

If you have a taunt you can use on the "webbed crusader" and if it isnt a forgotten depths ambusher then nothing will happen but if it is a forgotten depths ambusher it will pop out and attack.

I actually got both spiders and the soldiers, but i never got any further with the quest. Aint i suposed to actually get a count when i free the soldiers? :S

For hunters, make sure your pet is on passive before you start this quest or when you hit the pods. If you dont, then you will not get the count. As mentioned above, you can use track undead to see which pods have the mob in it.

by all other tricks there is a warrior one also you charge the web thing if it succesfully charges then its a crusader if it says no path availeble it is a spider

What's the chance of their being a crusader in an egg? I've destroyed over 20 eggs and almost all have been spiders. The ones that aren't spiders have just been empty.

Prepare to spend quite a while on this quest. The frequency at which spiders spawn is much much greater than that of the crusaders. It took me about 30 webs to get my 8 crusaders.

There is actually a trick to doing this. I had no problem doing this on my mage, but when I did it on my rogue, they rarely spawned until I switched to shooting them with a bow. then on my DK, icy touch and death coil both worked quiet well, spawning only 1 spider, and when I accidentally death gripped a web since it's bound to my death coil in a macro, the death grip hit before the death coil, and a spider spawned.

so, I hypothesize that in order to free a crusader, 2 things need to happen:

1. the web must die in 1 hit.
2. the web must not agro on you before the 1 hit.

channeled spells will aggro the web before it ticks, so a spider will spawn. instant cast spells typically kill the web and cause a crusader to spawn. there is still of course a chance to have a spider spawn.

the problem with trying to melee the webs open is that you often range aggro the webs right before you hit them, so they spawn a spider. if you're a caster, this should be easy for you, just use a spell that hits without aggro before hand, and for melee, get a range wepon of some sort, the webs are lv 1, so even an unskilled person can hit them.

The two that worked was 85.87, 74.03 then 84.77, 75.95 but the second one was about 50/50. It sometimes would pop the big spiders.

HUNTERS: If you have your tracking set to Undead, the webs will show up as being the ambushers if they are not the crusaders. This way you can tell easily which are the cocoons you need to go for.

I'd also like to say that the blessing of might that these guys cast stacks with a pally's BoM. We get +900 attack power during this quest. Good stuff.

I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence but I was getting very low rates of crusaders vs Ambushers (1:6) until I moved over to the left side of the road that comes out of the Argent Vanguard. Once I moved to that left side I had 100% crusaders.

I can confirm that this still works as of Cataclysm; if it's got a Nerubian in it the cocoon will break, but if it's a crusader you'll have to break it manually.

Make sure you are attacking the webbed crusaders with a white hit, not with a spell or a pet. I just ran around on my warlock for 15 minutes before I realized this.

I confirm with low graphic the cocoons with a black circle around have spider and those without black circle not have the spider.

Rogues --- Take your poisons off before breaking cocoons. I broke multiple cocoons with poisons on, and nothing appeared. No nerubian, no freed NPC. Took poisons off and was able to finish quest.

Very obnoxious quest. Ran around for 45 minutes doing this, the webs respawn very slowly, there aren't many of them and the drop rate is low. Overall id' say skip this, but its not possible, so i say chose a different hub.

Casters beware: If you "kill" the webs from too far away, it will not count towards the quest. You have to be right next to the webs. Learned this the hard way...
Edit: Ok, you can stop with the down-voting now... perhaps I should add this was the case *for me* perhaps not for everyone (though I thought that went without saying... apparently not).

Attempting to get this quest done for the first time since pre-CRZ days. There's about 15 Alliance and Horde characters flying around on their mounts trying to get the quest done at the same time. The spawn rate for webs is beyond ridiculous. In fact, it even seems much slower than it was at WOTLK launch in 2008.

Blizzard, please repair this hub or at the very least let us skip it.

ok so, i think I know whats happening here with this quest. its getting bugged... but there is a way to 'un bug it'

When you're flying over the area and don't see ANY cocoons, look for circle shadows on the ground where there isn't an object to create a shadow. Kite a spider over to the shadow, this will spawn a nerub from under the shadow. This then causes the cocoon to respawn not exactly on that spot but it makes other locations available, and evetually the one that you just killed also available.

For the info...
Whats happening is players are breaking the cocoons, and its supposed to be a trap, but the trap isnt being activated. The nerub is supposed to spawn from under the cocoon when you break the cocoon. By kiting a spider over the location (should be a circular shadow on the ground), this will then spawn the nerub, in turn allowing it to respawn a cocoon. I went there today and the entire area was full of bugged cocoons, it took about 20min to realize the problem just to get the cocoons to spawn.

The quest was "hotfixed" to increase the spawnrate. What Blizzard didn't do, was tell us you now only need 5 crusaders, instead of 8. And they did not update neither the quest description nor the quest tracker. No matter how many webs you break, you're stuck at 5/8.
But no worries, Crusade Commander Entari is smart enough to know you've freed enough.

UPDATE. 5.7

So as you all probably know, this quest has been bugged for decades. I just figured that when you have ended up at 5/8 crusaders rescued it wont show progress no more, For some reason it will though. After 30min of frustration i ended up delivering my other quests even tho i know you have to do this quest in order to progress quest lines in icecrown. So im not entirely sure, But after you have 5, just count down 3 more, and go deliver and for some reason the quest will be done when you come to the quest giver. Hope this helps!

This quest does still sais to get 8 of them...and I got stucked at 5...spent nearly an hour - and got only green webb crusaders in them - but tey didn't count!

Description

We had the element of surprise on our side! We blew a hole in the side of the mountain and charged into Scourgeholme. Scourge opposition was fierce and it wasn't long until we were overwhelmed. We fell back to the valley and began raining artillery down on the Scourge that followed. This held them back for awhile until... Those monsters began using crusaders as living shields. We had to stop shelling for fear of killing our own soldiers.
