I got the quest from the man on the horse as lvl 79.

anyways.. You have to go to the island Onslaught Harbor, and kill the guards around, they drop keys to the trunks as you can open (all humans drops they key).

But there isnt letters in all the trunks, anyhow .. i got another quest in one of the trunks :

There are no trunks in the cathedral, just a bunch of mobs, and the cave below has an elite pat that will probably kill you.
Around the cathedral, there are 3: The horses on the W side, the building between tents a little S of that, and one by the ballistae on the other side of the cathedral. There is an elite pat in the caverns below the cathedral.

Avoid both of these areas. The chests are in abundance at the docks north of the cathedral. (Around 6, 39).

Melee classes beware. There are flying mobs you can aggro that refuse to come to ground making you kill them with what limited range you have while they pound on you.

I would absolutely AVOID this quest if you are a melee class. That is unless you like dying repeatedly as flying mobs ranged attack you from the sky. Even if you use the Bone Gryphon you will eventually get attacked by a patrol of 2 or 3 mobs and the gryphon will die at which point the gryphon riders will attack you and you will be helpless.

I can do this quest on my hunter in about 15 minutes, sticking only to the northern island. There are plenty of boxes there and not as many flying mobs to avoid, which might make it preferable to the lower area for melee classes who don't want to repeatedly get pounded to death by hovering guards firing overhead from long range. I'd say the post above that estimates 50% drop rate on the intel docs is not accurate - more like 25-30% in my experience. Something else to keep in mind - if you die, you lose all the keys you've collected.

Unless you're desperate for the money or the Ebon Blade reputation, this quest is one to avoid:

-The key droprate among the Onslaught mobs is roughly 20%

-The Intel droprate among the chests is roughly 30%

Blizzard needs to change one of the above droprates to 100%.

This would be immensely helpful in preventing overfarming, as well as a brain-melting timesink.

(As a side note, Onslaught Harbor is aggrofest 2008. From the air, on the ground, through walls, around corners and in the water, you're chain-aggroing throughout the area. It's a nightmare.)

The keys are quest items, and are therefore destroyed upon turning the quest in. So you're not saving time by getting more keys than you need, in order to use them next time, since that's not possible.

Avoid this quest, it's not worth even trying. The drop rate on the keys is bad, when you get a key the drop rate from the chests is bad, You try to kill the gryphon by a chest and a pat joins in, then another pat, you can easily end up fighting 7 of them. I lost count of the number of times I died and ended up with a 13g reward that cost me over 35g in repairs and took over 45 minutes to complete.

Absolutely DO NOT do this quest - melee or ranged doesn't really matter, it's easier for ranged DPS classes but it is still a huge pain and not worth the time. In the time it takes to do this quest, you could have done at least 2 other Icecrown dailies.

For rep grinding, heroic instances are far more efficient in any case, but even if you're going for KEB rep I would recommend doing only "From Their Corpses, Rise" and "No-Fly Zone" in this area.

I did this quest as a mage level 80.

My advice: AVOID!

This quest is particularly annoying. The drop rates are low, the quest is repetitive. It took me 1 hour to complete this quest with far more keys than needed to open the baggage trunks.

Moreover, you will lose a lot of money for repairing your armor as mobs are aggroing like bees around honey.

This is the kind of farming quest that makes you hate wow, so if you want to go on playing, AVOID!

Confirmed! This quest is BS! I take the quest and only kill enough mobs to satisfy the "Kill 10 and rez them as ghouls" quest and if i get a key or two along the way and manage to get a document i just save it and come back the next day to do the "Rez 10" again. There is no excuse for droprates this bad. Over 4 days time, killing 10 mobs per day, 40 mobs total i get 3 documents out of chests. Quest items should not drop this low but w/e. =/

Apparently all of the previous posters crying about how BS this quest is bla bla bla, welp, you all SUCK then.
I completed this quest AND the one to raise the corpses as undead in under 10 minutes, on a 4-day old blood specc lvl 80 DK, with greens and blues from questing and 3 epics from a naxx run (not including epic weapon, just have de-raged waraxe from the anguish arena-thingy).

So, basically, you all just suck at killing stuff fast and effectively ;)
If i can be arsed, i'll fraps this set of dailies tomorrow and upload the vid here, so all you incompetent people can see how its done :)

Also, FYI : The gryphon dudes have such a small aggro range and wont chase you afar, so if you get some of them on you, welp, then you suck cause you dont know how to maneuver and avoid getting aggro in the first place, but even so, just run a bit and NOT towards the guards who do a slow-shot-thingy on you.

FakeEdit : It was my first try/run on these dailies ever, so i didnt have any strategy, i just looked up here first to see if anyone had mentioned a decent cluster of chests anywhere, and the one mentioned in 1st post, is a good spot.

Well, the comments about a majority of the trunks being on the north island is correct. I did happen across one spot which is just about at the base of the letter "T" in Onslaught, on a beach there were 3 trunks. Only 1 had the quest item, which isn't bad. The keys drop off of most mobs in the area which is a good thing. They may have improved the drop rates, cause it wasn't that hard for me to find the documents. Of course this was only on my first day doing it.

I will advise anyone who attempts this to be careful. The comments above a bit harsh, it's not THAT hard of a quest. but there's a lot of aggro. in particular the priests and harbor guards can be annoying. If you get aggro from a gryphon rider and you're on the ground, make for the open water and swim down, should lose them that way. You may die a few times, but if you're looking to get your Ebon rep up, an extra 250 rep every day doesn't hurt.

Honestly, there are only three bits of info on the comments that need to be listened to.

1) In order to get any of the Death's Rise quests, complete the quests at Shadow Vault
2) Do NOT do this daily. It is NOT worth it.
3) The only reason to accept this quest is to get the Grand Admiral's Note.

As soon as I got the note, I abandoned this quest and started on that chain. Horrible quest.

Some days I stick around to do the whole quest, and others I just grab what keys and chests I come across and hold them until I've collected enough to turn them in another day. It's not all that bad for a Mage to just burn everything down, but even then, yes, it takes a lot longer than it should.

This Daily IS NOT worth it, however it goes on par with the other 2 dailies so you might as well do it. You also have a very low chance, about 5% according to Wowhead of getting Note from the Grand Admiral, which unlocks a 4-quest chain quest.

1. First get on your gryphon and do No Fly Zone.
2. Once 10 are dead loot them for some keys.
3. Then turn their bodies into undead for From their Corpses, Rise!
4. Go to the beach at (8,43) which is at the back of the harbor and unlock the chests there.
You just did 3 dailies in 4 steps.

Here's what you do: stay on the outside of the mainland, near the small island to the southwest and the shoreline to the north of that. Anticipate roamers, and be sure to pull mobs away from others that could add. There should be two chests on the southwest island and a few up north on the shoreline in canoes and whatnot. Don't go too far inland! Do this quest with the griffon daily as well as with the daily that turns the men into skeletons. It'll go by much faster, and also if you're lucky you'll pick up The Grand (Admiral's) Plan.

Personally I don't mind this daily and I think everyone is really over-reacting a bit, but it'd really be great if they upped the drop rate from the chests. At the very least, make the money inside comparable to what the mobs drop in the area.

This NPC does not give me this quest. No explanation point over his head or anything. What am I missing? Am at 136/140 so I've done pretty much everything and this would give me the achievement. I'm honored with the Ebon faction so I don't think that's it.

I think this quest should not be considered as a daily quest, but more as a once-every-two-day quest. I usually leave after completing the other daily's in the area, leaving me with 2 or 3 Intel Documents. When I get back the next day I usually get the remaining and turn the quest in.

on my 80 shadow priest mobs dropped keys about 90% of the time and i found all the lockboxes i needed on the beach at 6.38, northwest side of the harbor. took 12 boxes to get my 5 docs. very high aggro range.

** HOW TO DO THIS QUEST QUICKLY AND FOR PROFIT**

While it is true that the drop rates for both the keys and the documents that Wowhead gives are way off (keys drop rate is about 40%; documents, almost 50%), you can do this quest fairly quickly and make good money.

You will need to open about 11 boxes to get the 5 documents you need. To open those 11 boxes, you will need to kill about 25 guards and gryphons in total.

Make sure you have two other quests: "From Their Corpses, Rise!" and "No Fly Zone". Focus on downing the gryphons first and use the tincture on them. This should give you about 3-4 keys. It works better and faster for me to ignore using the bone gryphon that is provided. If you get killed doing this part (as some say they do), it says more about your gear and your skill than it does about the quest. As a hunter, I never get killed even when attacked by as many as 7 gryphons at once as I did today (although two at a time used to do me in).

After you have finished the other two quests, you will only need to do about 15 more kills to get the other 7 keys you need. Open the boxes as you go. Once you have finished the other two quests, you should be able to finish this one in between 5 to 10 minutes. Not bad for the 13 gold the quest rewards (plus the drops).

I'd be happy if this quest just came out even with the other two dailies on this island. But invariably, after I've long since slain all the gryphon riders, raised all the corpses, and collected a pocketful of trunk keys, and still I'm looking for stupid trunks. GRRRR

(and agreed - I do better with the gryphon riders if I use my own mount - the bone gryphon is cool, but if you're going to loot the corpse, you have to get off every time anyhow, and you may as well save yourself the hassle and use your own gryphon - or whatever your flying mount is.)

Please keep in mind, if you plan to land on the little towers for a trunk, you will be very likely to fight at least 6-8 mobs. They pat constantly and there seems be a never ending stream of them. I don't think I have ever landed on one without slaughtering about 6 of them.

I just did this quest in 3.1... I could pick the locks on the trunks as a rogue. Maybe the quest is bugged, but they were pickable! The drop rate of keys and the docs *seemed* to be higher also. As I've only done the quest once since 3.1 I don't know for sure, but I thought I should inform people.

Yeah, maybe it's not the quickest daily to do, but come on, the others are cake. Burn 8 buildings? What does that take, about a minute? Everything can't be super fast and super easy.

Well I just recently did this, and not only do almost all of the npc's drop the keys, but the drop rate on the intel isn't that bad either.

Easiest thing to do is go clear out the very North-Western most part of the docks and just run around in circles, collecting intel and killing enemies as they respawn. Despite the small size of the area, they chests respawn quite quickly.

Even with 3.2 and the improved drop rate, this quest is still a ridiculous pain in the ass. You have to kill mobs that spawn quickly, cast shadow damage, cast slow spells, have very long ranged attacks, and group together in large numbers - all for only a chance to drop a key.

Once you deal with the mobs, the keys open chests that rarely have the quest item - usually they just have copper pieces instead of the quest item. If there's more than a few people in the area, forget it. You won't be fast enough to get the slow chest spawns, but you'll still have the pleasure of fighting linked 5+ melee/caster/ranged mobs at the same time. Plus, there's a TON of aerial mobs around to keep you on your toes while you fly around hoping to find the chests.

As an iLevel 200+ equipped feral Druid, this quest takes 20+ minutes, tanking gear and bear form, and the bigger pulls still require cooldowns. Your time is MUCH better spent elsewhere than completing this daily for a measly 250 rep. Do all the other Ebon Blade dailies in Icecrown but skip this one.

This key drop rate seems to have increased, I just did this quest and got 20 keys out of about 25 kills, unless I'm insanely lucky ;P

As of patch 3.2.2 both the keys and Intel Docs are about a 50% drop rate. This quest is very easy to do, it should take you no longer than 5 minutes.

ATTN: Rogues
These lockboxes will skill your lockpicking all the way to 450, and still be orange in skill at the cap. As long as you can open them, you do NOT need to farm for the keys. The intel documents will still drop at a 50% rate without keys.

One chest per top of the turrets usually, sure you have to fight one rider per turret but they usually have one key each. Also, fly LOW so not to aggro anymore riders.

The boats are the best place to do this. Very easy when you do it here, lots of mobs, lots of chests, and do From Their Corpses, Rise! with it to avoid mounting/ dismounting continually for No Fly Zone. I HATED this quest before trying it on the boats.

Well, I checked out the ships as Biggd suggested and he was absolutely right. The quest took maybe 15 minutes. Plenty of chest, every other guard on the ships drops a key and as a bonus about every other drops Frostweave cloth. I did waste time looking on land but after reading these comments I went on the ship and it was a piece of cake. Will definitely do it as often as offered.

Drop rate on documents is about 50% now, drop rate on keys is also higher.

Note: you can only hold five keys or they stop dropping.

I don't have exact numbers, but this quest definitely must have been updated in response to user feedback because I got a key off of almost every mob and I got a document out of every chest. The hardest part was figuring out where the chests were. I found them easiest on the boats.

I will agree that the boats/beach areas are the best places to get keys/trunks... I noticed that you can only keep 5 keys on hand at a time, so once you use a key, another one seems to drop almost instantly.... Avoid fighting near the castle, as that is aggro city...

I guess the Scarlet Onslaught spent all of their gold on those gryphons, because I cannot fathom how they might otherwise be so broke as to feel it necessary to lock away groups of 20-30 copper in chests.

For anyone levelling or doing this quest for rep, it's been made much easier:

Chests that contain intelligence are ALWAYS highlighted with a glowing yellow quest objective glow.
Chests that don't contain intelligence have no glow, they just look normal.

I did this quest twice, and throughout both quests I found the above rule to be 100% accurate. It saves you time wasting keys on useless chests.
