I just stayed at a distance, then used the crystal on the drake. The drake turned green and started attacking the orc. I helped the drake kill the orc to free it (if you don't help, there's a good chance the orc will kill the drake).

The crystal have a long range, so you can stand pretty far away.

How to get Neutral with Netherdrake (Netherdrake Epic Mount Quest Starter)

1. Kindness
- Kill 8 Rocknail Flayers, Use Carcasses to Feed 8 Dragons (don't move!). Also make sure to travel a bit when laying the meat, as the same drakes won't eat twice in a row.

- Fly on your mount and find Neltharaku, he patrols slowly around Dragonmaw about a few hundred feet up. You'll have to be about 5 yards UNDER him to talk to him.

- Kill Zuluhed and recover the key. I recommend pulling him inside so as to avoid the archers, and kill him BEFORE he summons his add. Use the key he drops to free Karynaku.

- Return to Mordenai, you will immediately gain 42,000 rep and become neutral.

- Blizzard has announced that next patch they will be introducing a continuence of this quest line, including the ability to get exalted and purchase or receive through extensive questing an EPIC netherdrake mount. You will need epic training to use it however, so save your gold!

The item hits multiple enslaved drakes, so be careful. Mine went off on two so I was only able to save one of them.
The drakes are also pathetically weak.

The drakes are around the 68,60 area. The crystal can't be used if you are in combat. If you use the crystal and there are more orcs around the drake, it will aggro those orcs, so you need to kill them all before the quest will accept the drake as being freed. Kill orcs around the drake that aren't linked to it before using the crystal if you can. I also had a bug where the drake simply ran across the entire orc camp after I used the crystal. It aggroed all of the orcs, who killed the drake at the end of the camp, and then came to kill me afterwards. Be ready to run out of the camp if this happens.

What no one has mentioned is that after you use the crystal on the drakes they take a good 2 seconds to turn green...so you must wait that amount of time before attacking.

If you do this in a group, everyone will get a Drake freed when standing nearby.

Things you should know about freeing the drakes:

Once freed, The drakes will aggro any nearby orcs that get too close to it. Make sure you aggro and kill them fast; The drakes have very low HP and will die very quickly if more than one mob is attacking them.

Stay *away* from the road leading thru the big gate of this fort during the quest and even if you happen to be grinding there. A LVL 71 elite boss, Ruul the Darkener, pats thru here and if you aggro him, will smear you in a matter of seconds.

Also, When you successfully free one of the drakes and kill the Dragonmaw Subjugator it's linked to, the drake will give you a one minute buff that will increase your casting, melee, and ranged attack speed by 15% before flying off. Quite nifty.

Something that I found particularly annoying about this quest is the fact that the drake has to actually take off before you recieve credit for freeing it. On multiple occasions I would free my drake and help it kill the subjugator, only to have it run off and aggro 3 more mobs who would have otherwise not have been a problem, thus resulting in the death of both me and my drake.

Again, make sure the drake doesn't run off and aggro anything else, and make sure you've actually gotten credit for the release before running off.

If you do this in close enough to two of the drakes, it will free both of them and aggro the nearby orcs onto each of them. If you don't put them down fast, the orc will kill one of the drakes and still be in combat with you.

Additionally, it appears that a freed drake MUST get into combat with something before actually taking off and being freed. If there is nothing in immediate vicinity when you free it, it will run and aggro something else, or sometimes many others.

somethings messed up. i go to dragonmaw fortress, target a drake with rider ontop, use the crystal. about 90% through the casting, its interupted and says "too far away". ive done that at 15 yards away with the same result. i abandoned the quest, restarted, and got the same.

please someone fix this bug, or tell me what im doing wrong.

Don't sap the Subjugator before hitting the Netherwing with the crystal, the Netherwing will just attack you.

when i tried to do this quest, the 1st time i enslaved 1, but then after, they started attacking me, i kept my distance and tried to enslave them, but nothing happened

This quest doesn't work. I used crystal on enslaved drake, nothing happened and both attacked me. Tried again, same result. What is wrong?

Edit: Don't stand too close - you must not be aggroed; see to that the dragon has a Subjugator so he can kill him when gets free. Otherwise he'll find another group to kill => he'll die and you won't get any credit.

Note on Rogues: Do not attempt to free them while stealthed. It will never work and you will just aggro both.

I just found a blessedly simple way to do this, with no extra aggro or loss of life:

Fly to the south-east edge of Dragonmaw Fortress and land on the rock ledge that makes the boundary wall ( are the coords). Land and dismount on the ledge and target your crystal on the first dragon - I found 3 in a row back there with only one subjugator each. Wait till the dragon turns green, then dispose of the mob and move easily to the next one. (As a frost mage, I just counter-spelled his shadowbolt and frost bolted him as walked toward me, and between that and the drake attacking him he died before he could reach me. Range dps is a definite plus here).

Since there were only 3 back there, just fly back to the starting point and wait for the respawn to collect the final 2. Painless and easy!

If the drake is already friendly to you the crystal won't work... and there's no way to reset the drake that I can see because he is friendly. Even if you kill his master, he will sit there and still be there the next time the orc respawns. This quest can be difficult if there are multiple bugged drakes since there aren't that many spawns to start with.

You cannot heal these drakes during combat, so make sure you pull the damage away from them.

This might be helpful to some warlocks. If you are doing the Black Temple questline that is specifically for 90 level warlocks, you will not see any orcs or dragons in the Dragonmaw camp. They will be phased to you until you complete the scenario. I had to submit a ticket to find this information out, because I had the Black Temple quest unfinished and couldn't figure out why they kept phasing themselves out as I approached the camp. So you must complete the scenario, and you may not abandon the quest to get it to phase, because it simply will not work. Hope this information helps someone.

This info might only be useful for a short time, but I figured it might help at least one person.

Currently this quest seems to be bugged. When you use the Enchanted Nethervine Crystal on the enslaved nether drake, it immediately attacks you alongside its orc captor. Killing the orc captor and waiting around doesn't seem to do anything. And obviously, killing the hostile nether drake doesn't count as freeing it.

The way to finish this quest now is to use the crystal on the drake, kill only the orc, and then run away from the nether drake until it leashes back to its spawn point. At that point is when it will turn friendly and then randomly attack one of orcs nearest to it. Kill THAT orc, and the drake will once again return to its spawn point and finally be freed. :]

(As of Shadowlands) If it's busy, like during timewalking for the rep buff - act quick when you turn in or pick up the quest! As part of the quest at the end of the chain (Ally of the Netherwing), Neltharaku will sometimes leave and fly down near Mordenai for some RP. As soon as he starts moving, you can't interact or get quests from him anymore - you have to wait for him to respawn.

It takes a couple of minutes for the player doing Ally of the Netherwing to arrive with another NPC and witness the conversation, and then for Neltharaku to fly away and disappear. Then he respawns.

(Judging by the comments, there might be a separate glitch where he doesn't respawn for a long while, but I haven't seen that yet. There are times when he gets pulled away almost instantly, though.)

Neltharaku, flying high above Netherwing Fields in Shadowmoon Valley, wants you to free 5 Enslaved Netherwing Drakes.

Description

Take this enchanted nethervine crystal and make your way back to Dragonmaw Fortress. Once there, seek out the enslaved drakes and invoke the magic of the nethervine crystal. My own energies will pour forth, causing the drakes to break free from the bond of their captors. When you see that the drake has broken free, help it defeat its captor! It will most assuredly be weak from the imprisonment.

Release all that you can find and return to me, <name>.
