This is one of 4 new pets coming in 5.2, all of the fish are exceptionally rare drops obtained via fishing in their respective areas. Unfortunately as of right now, all of the fish seem to be BoP, and none of them are cageable. I highly recommend reading El's Anglin's Tiny Carp page if you're interested in fishing one up.

The Tiny Red Carp can be fished up in either Townlong Steppes or Dread Wastes.

The other fish available are Tiny Blue Carp Tiny Green Carp Tiny White Carp.

Tiny Blue Carp appear in Crowded Redbelly Mandarin pools because the contents of Crowded Redbelly Mandarin pools are identical to Redbelly Mandarin School - and Redbelly Mandarin School are found in both Vale of Eternal Blossoms and Townlong Steppes:

The pet journal descriptions are reasonably clear on open water catches, since open water can be fairly easily described by zone. However, named pools have traditionally had the same contents regardless of which zone they are found in. For a fish to be genuinely caught anywhere in a zone, that fish would need to be found in all the named pools found in that zone. That would automatically include occurrences of the same-named pools that are in other zones. Fish of the Day pools are duplicates of regular pools, with identical contents. The result is that we catch a Tiny Carp that should be unique to one zone, from a pool which is unique to an entirely different zone.

Early in testing, Mumper (Lead Content Designer, Cory Stockton) noted that, "These new battle pets are from fishing. Each one from a unique area in Pandaria." Unique is open to interpretation, but implies that there should be no one area of water (zone, region, pool) containing more than one named Tiny Carp. Unfortunately that interpretation does not match the Tiny Blue Carp catch above.

More likely, pools that appear in more than one zone with a different Tiny Carp, have a chance of containing more than one type of Tiny Carp. There are 3 such regular pool types, plus related Fish of the Day pools:

Emperor Salmon School and Stormstout Brewery Fish of the Day (Brew Frenzied Emperor Salmon and Large Pool of Brew Frenzied Emperor Salmon) potentially contain Tiny Blue, Green and Red Carp.
Krasarang Paddlefish School and Krasari Falls Fish of the Day (Swarm of Panicked Paddlefish and Large Swarm of Panicked Paddlefish) potentially contain Tiny Blue and Green Carp.
Redbelly Mandarin School and Fields of Niuzao (Crowded Redbelly Mandarin and Large Pool of Crowded Redbelly Mandarin) potentially contain Tiny Blue and Red Carp.

If Emperor Salmon School do contain 3 different types of Tiny Carp, they do not necessarily have 3 times the chance of catching any one Tiny Carp: For example, coastal open water in Blasted Lands or Swamp of Sorrows appears to be a good place to catch rare offhand fish for One That Didn't Get Away, because both 103 Pound Mightfish and 22 Pound Lobster can be caught from the same water. Unfortunately those fish are estimated to be even rarer as a result. So if Emperor Salmon and Krasarang Paddlefish Schools do contain more than one type of Tiny Carp, the chance of catching each may be lower, and the overall chance of catching any one Tiny Carp the same as pools that contain just one type of Tiny Carp.

Since we don't yet know, Emperor Salmon School may be a good place to start fishing if you haven't caught any Tiny Carp: At worst, you will have the same odds of getting a Tiny Carp as other pools, and the odds may be better. But be wary: Once you're caught one Tiny Carp this way, your chances may drop relative to other pools. Only the Fish of the Day pool variant (Brew Frenzied Emperor Salmon and Large Pool of Brew Frenzied Emperor Salmon) can be fished continually, since regular Emperor Salmon Schools always share spawning locations with other types of pool. Due to the way pools spawn, fishing only Emperor Salmon Schools will gradually make them harder and harder to find. Fortunately Emperor Salmon Schools do spawn with Krasarang Paddlefish Schools in Krasarang Wilds and Valley of the Four Winds. Krasarang Paddlefish School have a similar potential to contain more than one Tiny Carp, so continually fishing both Emperor Salmon and Krasarang Paddlefish Schools would be a good alternative to the Stormstout Brewery Fish of the Day migration. Fishing pools in Townlong Steppes (both Emperor Salmon and Redbelly Mandarin Schools) is less viable, because there are few pool spawning locations in Townlong Steppes.
Pool and Open Water Rarity

When Tiny Carp first appeared during testing, they were much more common than they are now. Early test catch data is not representative of current catch rates, but we can use it to hint at the differences between pool and open water catch rates:

** Open water catch totals have been adjusted to exclude excess Golden Carp caught while (also) testing skill changes. Tiny Carp are part of the regular open water catch, so will be impossible to gain from casts which catch excess Golden Carp due to insufficient skill.

The sample above is almost 10 thousand catches, with an equal split between open water and pools. Only 6 Tiny Carp were caught, mostly from pools. This early data suggests the catch rate from pools was approximately double that from open water. Unfortunately the sample size is far too small to be certain, and there is no way to know that the same pattern remained after the catch rates changed. It still makes logical sense for pools to have a higher catch rate, since it generally takes longer to fish pools than open water. The evidence is biased towards a higher catch rates from pools, but inconclusive.

Part-way through testing more challenging catch rates were applied... And after another 14,000 catches, including ten thousand from pools, I'd not caught a single Tiny Carp! The probability of that result with the early test proportions (perhaps 1/1000 from pools) is very low, but just about possible. The best evidence for a change in catch rates is Mumper's response to my ever-declining chances:

"The carp are very rare."

In fishing, 1/1000 is not "very rare". 1/1000 is approximately the rarity of the Giant Sewer Rat and Mr. Pinchy. Rare, just not very. There are no epic fish: Very rare should be reserved for the rarest catches, like One That Didn't Get Away or the Sea Turtle. Pool catch rates for these very rare fish are estimated at around 1/5000. Maybe 1/10,000 from open water.

Reliable catch data for Tiny Carp will be almost impossible to gather at such extremes of rarity. Some anglers will be lucky, and catch Tiny Carp in the course of fishing for other fish. But dedicated pet collectors, and anglers who want to "catch everything", should expect to spend a lot of time fishing the waters of Pandaria.

I've personally caught the other 3 tiny carps, but have been having trouble catching this one. After doing some research around the interwebs, I've seen a number of comments all saying the same thing.

These guys can be found in pond in Townlong Steppes next to Nuizao Temple (right by the guy with the pet daily).

They are found in open water there ... not the pools. Ideally you want your fishing skill to be up to at least 725 (get some lures, hat, rod, boots, etc.), I have seen comments saying it took people 300 casts up to 5,000 cast before they caught this guy, so be patient.

While I have seen that these guys are supposed to come from Spinefish Schools, I have not seen anyone confirm that one has been found there yet.

While I have not caught one yet myself, I figured I'd add this here since no one else has yet.

The location that worked for me was the lake in the Fields of Niuzao, Townlong Steppes (raining – not sure if this makes a difference)
Fishing Skill: 785 (Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat, Heat-Treated Spinning Lure, Jeweled Fishing Pole) – 3.5hrs in open water

Note: The red carp took a lot longer than 3.5 hrs to fish up. I tried a couple of different spots but ended up fishing in Niuzao lake once I had bumped my fishing skill up to 785. Over two days, I was down to my last Heat-Treated Spinning Lure when it started raining. I managed to fish it up with 8mins to spare on the lure. El’s Extreme Anglin’ recommends a fishing skill of 725 for this spot.

For this one, I tried two different areas with this setup: Dragon Fishing Pole, Nat's Hat, and using the hat's own lure, giving me 785 fishing, and the Ancient Pandaren Fishing Charm for the pools.

Based on El's Anglin' guide, I first tried the Spinefish pools in the Dread Wastes (Lake of Stars) with the Ancient Pandaren Charm. I figured the extra chance per cast outweighed the worthlessness of the fish overall. No luck. After 1368 casts, no sign of the little guy. Considering the rarity of this one, that's not surprising, and certainly not indicative that you can't get it from these pools. RNG just wasn't on my side and the annoyance factor of having to frequently kill off Crocolisks and Sauroks to fish unbothered became more than I wanted to deal with and really slowed me down. :)

I moved off to Townlong and the lake near the Temple (Fields of Niuzao.) Open water casting only this time, so I dropped using the Charm. It took me 2513 casts to finally get it and even then, it was 13 casts into the 3rd day of fishing when I got it.

This is one elusive little battle pet! I got the other 3 Carp in about 1000 casts total using zone appropriate pools and using the Charm. As mentioned in another comment, be patient and prepare for the long haul and have plenty of bag space and enough lures. :D

Just to add some very important information.

Do not worry about your fishing skill even if you are fishing in open water. If you have low fishing skill, your ´junk´ catch is the golden carp. ( the lower the skill, the more likely you are to catch golden carp). However, as has been reported, you can catch this rare pet secondary to a golden carp... ie.. fishing skill doesn´t mattter in regards to catching this fish.

Although you would probably be better off making some effort as the golden carp is pretty worthless, and with decent fishing skill you can get much more valuable fish.

To summarise:

These are fished from inland open water in the Townlong Steppes, or any Spinefish pool (including the Fish of the Day pools).

If you are fishing in open water, the greater your fishing skill (up to 725) the greater are your chances of catching it.

To clarify the discussion about the Golden Carp dropping the pet, the guides don't say you can't get them with a Golden Carp- they say you can't get them with a Golden Carp that is the result of a failed cast.

The way that fishing works is that regardless of skill, you can fish anywhere. And regardless of skill, you do have a chance, even if it is a small one, of having a successful cast in any open body of water (pools require no skill, and are always successful, I believe). The recommended skill levels for each zone aren't the levels you have to have to catch the pet- they're the levels you have to have to never have a failed cast, and therefore have the best chance of catching the pet.

There are two loot tables for each body of water with fishing- one for a successful cast, and one for a failed cast. In pre-Pandaria bodies of water, the successful loot table has all of the normal fish for that area, and the occasional crate, potion, etc. The failed loot table has all that low-value grey garbage like sickly fish and bent hooks and such. However, in Pandaria, the failed loot table always rewards Golden Carp. The successful loot table rewards one of the normal zone fish, which can also include Golden Carp. So when you catch a golden carp, it is impossible to tell if it was a successful or a failed cast, and the pet would only have a chance to appear if it was a Golden Carp from the success loot table, and not the failed one.

So it is good advice that the best shot you have to catch them is to get your skill level to the point where you have no more failures, but that doesn't mean that you wouldn't still be getting Golden Carp- just that you wouldn't be getting any more with no chance at the pet. It also means that if you don't have the skill levels that people are recommending, you do still have the chance to pull up this pet- your odds just go way down.

There are definitely people who are getting this pet as the secondary on Golden Carp, but that doesn't mean it appears on failed casts. It means that RNG smiled on them on one of their successful casts, that happened to be a Golden Carp.

I've been fishing these up to make gold...in one session I caught 4 in a night and sold instantly for 5k each placing 1 at a time. Then in 2 sessions didn't catch anything. So its completely random. But so far I've caught around 20 total carps and sold them. In about 15,000 catches. On my server atleast the red sells for the most. The others only sell for 1500-2500g each.

I use to farm for herbs and ore but fishing with the prices and these pets..is better on my server.

Finally caught the Tiny Red Carp today. I was fishing in open water, not in pools. It took a total of 628 casts, with 600 fishing skill + 30 (pole) + 150 (Heat-Treated Spinning Lure). Been using the Fishing Buddy addon to keep up with all this. Like a lot of others, I fished in the big Fields of Niuzao pond (Townlong Steppes). Time to begin leveling these pets :P

Not sure what to do with the 84 lures I have left over. Guess I could fish up more to give to friends :3

I finally caught this little guy after months of trying.
I caught him in Townlong Steppes at map coords 53 36 (the lake by the Temple).
I caught him in open water, max fishing skill + dragon fishing pole, nat's hat, and sharpened tuskarr spear. It was raining. It took me about an hour and a half of fishing tonight to catch it.

This is the only carp I have yet to catch. I haven't been fishing very regularly for the past month or so, but I needed to restock my fish supplies to help level up some alt cooks, so I went back out and figured I'd try for this at the same time.

I caught my blue carp in about 45 minutes and the green was even faster than that. The white one I caught while flying around Jade Forest fishing in pools of Shrimp and Reef Octopus a few days ago, and I hadn't been counting how long I'd been fishing or the number of overall casts.

It does seem that this is the rarest of the four carps. I've spent about 2+ hours today fishing up the Spinefish pools as part of the daily event in KLS, and after over 400 spinefish caught and several other assorted odds and ends, I have not seen one. I've been doubting that they can be obtained from the pools at all, so I came looking for any confirmation that someone has successfully done so...

I guess I'll just give up on the spinefish method, and try my hand at fishing in the none-event areas people have had success with.

So based on research i've spent time on and off for the last week fishing one @ the lake north of ox temple. today about 4 hours straight. to pass time i was periodically making parodies of songs in general...

eg: i can't get no, tiny red carp. i try, and i try, and i try, but i cant get no, tiny red carp.

finally i do: that's when i said, what about breakfast with a tiny red carp.

and low and behold
i think they like the music of deep blue something. because there was my tiny red carp.

Don't need to be maxed profession or have all of the cool esentials for serious fishing duty. Just gotta be lucky. I passed the time by watching Netflix w/ my husband and didn't even notice at first. Wasn't looking forward to 300-600 casts as reported from others, so for those like me; I hope this gives you a little hope :)

There's a Tiny Red Carp pet in them waters by golly...yep!
Grab your best fishin gear what ever it maybe, have a seat in Nat's chair if you may have one (chair has cup holder that fits super size and is optional) and enjoy the spectacular views and waters of Townlong Steppes for a hour or uhh...so.
By fishing the pond up north of Fire Camp Osul (65.5,38.4 as shown hereon above) or there abouts is one place it "IS" possible to catch this here pet.
Also don't concern yourself with any of them "pools" ...fishing pools that is.
Tell you what, I never caught one of em in a "pool"...just thought I would mention.
Also a stones throw to the west a rare might show itself to add to the excitement of all that fishing your havin.
Ahh reminds me of when my daddy would take us "dang kids" fishin near the deep water edge, I have to say it was hell getting out of those gunny sacks every time but it was fun...ah heck! Gatta go dang cat is on fire again!

I would just like to announce that I caught a Tiny Red Carp at 35,15 / 52,82 in the Fields of Niuzao. NOT from a pool.

Tools used:

Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat + Fishing Hat Lure on cooldown
Sharpened Tuskarr Spear on cooldown
Jeweled Fishing Pole + High Test Eternium Fishing Line
Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin' Boots
Ancient Pandaren Fishing Charm (Not that it would increase my chances or anything but I was hoping in some way it might :P ) on cooldown

I suppose it took me about 2-3 hours of fishing before I got it. So relatively quick.

Just as an update that this spot still works!

I was standing on top of the small rock 10 feet from the shore facing northwest and snagged this baby in 20 casts. This really does seem to be a hot spot. Took almost 200 casts each for the green and the blue. Time to get one more and sell this one for some major gold at the AH. Good luck everyone!

Can confirm this can be fished up from the pond in Fields of Niuzao (35,52) in Townlong Steppes.

I had fished for a few hours for about 5 days only from Spinefish pools in Binan Village in Kun-Lai Summit (as per El's Anglin's suggestions) and even fished there while it was the daily fishing location without a drop. After reading comments here I moved to try Fields of Niuzao and got the pet within about 450 casts from open water.

I would suggest buying Nat's Hat if you have the rep for it and any other items that will get you up to 750 fishing skill to avoid excessive failed casts.

A confirmation note: I too fished this pet up in pond in Fields of Niuzao (35,52) in Townlong Steppes. She came up on a cast in open water with a Golden Carp. At the time I was not looking for this fish - I was going after Redbelly Mandarin to level cooking.

I am not certain of the number of exact casts, but it was approximately 60-80. My fishing skill was between 715 to 725: 600 (base) + 30 (Kaluak pole) + 75 (hat lure) + 5 (hat) + 5 (enchanted fishing gloves) + 10 (Captain Rumsey's Lager). The Lager wears off quickly, so it might have been expired at the time.

Side Note: If anyone is looking to easily add +15 to their fishing, make Captain Rumsey's Lager (the Dwarven Stout and other alcohol are sold in the Shrine by the dwarf right where you hearth in), and enchant a plain white pair of gloves with +5 fishing. Keep the gloves in your pack and pop them on whenever you equip your pole.

I was in the southern end of the lake on a raft, as more Redbelly schools seemed to be spawning in that part of the lake. I have no idea if this increases the chance of catching a Tiny Red Carp; I only mention it for reference purposes.

This pet is awesome! At level 1, its attack power is 12 with a speed of 10, so it hits harder than most aquatic pets. The speed is not much of an issue with the Pandaren dailies/Beasts of Fable/Spirit Tamers; their pets are so overclocked they will always be faster than you anyway.

The lake behind the temple is indeed the place to get it. I await the hate after I tell you all it took me about 150 casts. And about 7 casts for the blue carp the night before. Just white left now.

Note: no fishing hat used, just 600 fishing. No rod, no lures.

I just caught my Tiny Red Carp in the Fields of Niuzao, Townlong Steppes (34,52). My catch came from open water and not a pool. after 5,000 cast in Kun-Lai and Dread waste I finally went to the little lake in Townlong. Right in front of the pet daily guy 440 cast latter baam hooked Tiny Red Carp.

Got mine, by insane luck.
At north shore portion of Lake in Fields of Niuzao, standing in ankle-deep water, just for something different.

I used:
Mastercraft Kal'uak Fishing Poke (+30 fishing)
Ritual Gloves of the Eagle (+5 fishing)
Heat-Treated Spinning Lure (+150 fishing)
and
Ancient Pandaren Fishing Charm (description says "only effective from pools")

I spent 25 minutes and prolly 200 or similar quantity of casts.
Stuck to 'glassy water,' or non-pool & non-school water.
FYI, I spent 20 of the 25 minutes working at the eastern shore, nearby Seeker Zusshi. Then I moved to north shore, and * POW *

Sat on a rock in the middle of the lake in the Fields of Niuzao (at 35.9 53.3)

I'm not sure how long I was there before mine finally came up, but I ended up with:

Just wanted to console guys for when you see that 0.04% drop rate. That's probably (chime in if you can verify) biased because it includes Townlong Steppes fishing casts that were not cast in that particular little lake. It also maybe includes fishing in that lake but from pools.

Don't get me wrong. It's still terrible, just not 1 in 2000+ terrible.

Caught one today in the pond in Fields of Niuzao (Townlong Steppes) I was fishing a school of fish with a Strong Fishing Pole and an Aquadynamic Fish Attractor with a level 355 Fishing Skill. Came in a catch along with a Golden Carp. I was basically standing in the spot that had been occupied by an Osul Farstalker that sits right beside the lake, not far from Seeker Zusshi. I wasn't actually trying to farm it, just luck I guess because I only had cast about ten times or so.

Been reading some of the posts here and just wanted to add this. I've been fishing Pandaria on a lvl 20 trial account toon. My fishing is totally raw, i have no buffs or enhancements to fishing, i dont use a rod and my fishing lvl is maxed at 100/150. So far i have caught all the tiny carp pets except the red one which im working on now. Ive been fishing in the temple pond and so far have cast 1100 times, got a lot of carp but no red one, will keep you posted.

There are a lot of posts here that give the impression that this fish can be caught with a semi-reasonable effort in the Fields of Niuzao. Well, I'm sure it can, but don't think these cases are going to apply to you as well. Maybe only the people with great successes bother to post here, but with such a ridiculously low drop rate, you're going to have trouble getting this pet at all.

Personally, I have spent almost 10 hours at that pool and fished just over 2500 fish up. That's fish only, so there was also a much smaller number of crates, but I didn't keep track of those. I just kept the fish.

In open water only, with 815 skill, I caught:

1,200 golden carp
704 emperor salmon
656 redbelly mandarin
2 flying tiger gourami

I did this over two days, each session about 5 hours. I never got a pet to appear in my casts though. I'll keep looking, but it's been a very discouraging grind to be honest. The pet's description states that dedicated anglers can sometimes befriend this pet, but it's much less about dedication and much, much, MUCH more about luck. This pet has an insanely low drop rate from casts, so expect that you might never see it. The AH may be the best bet if you have a reliable method to generate the 12K or so to buy it. At least on my server, there are usually one or two listed for sale.

Personally i think all the tiny carp have the same drop chance. They are all caught in open inland water. The region you are in determines what carp you will catch. I personally have caught 6 reds beside the pet tamer in Townlong Steppes in open water. 1 green in Krasarang Wilds in the middle of the figure 8 on the Dojani River by accident doing my dailies in open water and one green in a pool beside the brewery. I think ppl are catching them in pools and the pools loot table is added to open water pool table which has the carp and when they catch it, they think it only comes from pools. I would wager i could fish in the open water beside the brewery and catch the green at the same drop rate. Idk i catch them in open water so i can stand still. Pool hop if you want ill be sitting beside the pet tamer.

Got this little bugger in exactly 200 casts fishing in the pond in Fields of Niuzao, in open water. It came second to a Golden Carp. Using Nat's Fishing Hat Lure and a +35 Fishing Rod (885 fishing in total).

499 casts in Fields of Niuzao and I caught the Tiny Red Carp today. I did not fish the pools of Red Belly Mandarin or such that showed up.

After over 2000 casts and about 8hrs i eventually caught the blighter.
Fields of Niuzao, open water.

Best bet is to expect the worst and camp down for the long haul.

Get a long playlist, crate of beer and go for it.

3 casts and i find a red tiny carp costing 100k in AH, stayed until i have 20 cast to see if im just super lucky or not, on the 20th cast i found the tiger gourami quest, haha!

In case you were wondering, Tiny Red Carp isn't affected by lots of prepatch bugs and you can fish him up without problems. Took me 977 casts with artifact pole and Shiny Baubles.

Just wanted to stop by to say that i finally got mine. This, to me, is a big deal because I'm NOT one of the few that got it quickly.

Here are my details:

- 75 (Pandaria Max)
- +5 Captain Rumsey's Lager

- +10 Fishing Hat Lure (from Nat's Hat)

- +5 Summon Tuskarr Fishing Spear from Sharpened Tuskarr Spear

Total Catches: 5995
- Golden Carp: 3386 (56.9%)
- Redbelly Mandarin: 1327 (22.3%)
- Emperor Salmon: 1131 (19%)
- Sealed Crate: 110 (1.8%)
- Tiny Red Carp: 1 (0.0% - statistically irrelevant)

Other info:
All catches were in open water only; never any pools due to all the info I found saying that's how to catch it. This was more challenging when the FotD was at the Fields of Niuzao, but since it was all me, no bots, I made sure to avoid pools. As with most, I was standing basically in front of the daily pet battle quest guy, Seeker Zusshi. No rafting, water walking etc. Just standing on the bank. That was true with the vast majority of my catches -- early on I did try to go out into the water, but clearly that made no difference. The current fishing session I was at 139 catches. No session was shorter than 50 catches and my longest was about 500.

Good luck to all those still going after this evasive little bugger! He was my 4th and last and I won't miss fishing here AT ALL.

Finally got this pet. I was concerned that the new BFA fishing skill structure may have broken things as I got a ton of Golden Carp. I searched to find out and didn't see anything conclusive so thought I would share for anyone still trying to fish this guy up.

Here's what I had: 110 alt with pandaria fishing maxed at 75/75, base fishing not maxed 144/300. I was in open waters at the lake in front of the daily pet quest near the Niuzao Temple. It took about a week of fishing a few hours at a time. Total catches: 4,420... (2,847 Golden Carp, 882 Emperor Salmon, 891 Redbelly Mandarin, and about 25 crates). I did use Bright Baubles but after some number crunching with and without, the percentages of drops that were not Golden Carp did not change. I still used them as a placebo after about 2,000 Golden Carp.

Just caught this guy, in 8.2. I'm leveling a new-ish Shaman and while passing through Pandaria figured I should complete my Tiny Carp team. The cooking for Way of the Pot actually triggered it, since I needed Jade Lungfish and when I tried to use my raft it wouldn't let me because I hadn't trained Pandarian fishing. I picked up a Flying Tiger Gourami from shore in a Lungfish pool so I took it to Nat for the Exp with the quest turn in, and trained in Pandarian fishing. I then flew to Seeker Zusshi and started fishing in front of him in the lake with level one fishing. I caught the Tiny Red Carp at level 56 with no buffs, special rods, hats or anything else. Best of luck to anyone looking for this one.

I just did this (Nov 2021). It took more than 2000 casts, but eventually I got it with a Golden Carp. Wahoo. I also got 2800 Golden Carp, 225 Emperor Salmon and 174 Redbelly Mandarin. They are for sale if you want them.

I'm going to suggest a rough average rate of 4 fish per min as how quickly we can bring up fish (0-20s window for a bite, couple of secs to cast and bring up/stow in bags). Given that, and given I like sitting no longer than 30min at a time, that's 120 fish/30 min or 2400 after 10hrs (20 sittings) which is close to the 2500 suggested by the drop rate. Might help in breaking this big task up and feeling I'm achieving little goals along the way :)
I got lucky and got mine today during my fourth sitting. Caught the following first:
257 x Golden Carp
95 x Redbelly Mandarin
74 x Emperor Salmon
I have not farmed anything like this in a long time which I suspect factors into the RNG when you finally do return to it :D

I have fished about 2300 various fishes by the time I have the 4 carps. I got NOTHING in the 1400 first casts in various places !
So just keep fishing it will eventually come :)

I have fished :
nothing on sunday :(
white and green on monday
- the White in Tiger Gourami pools behind the Shado-pan monastery
- the Green in Krasarang in Dojani river, open waters
blue and red on tuesday
- the Blue in the lake behind Niuzao Temple, maybe in the big pool of Redbelly Mandarin, I was fishing at the edge of it (special fish day in the lake)
- the Red, also in this lake a few moments later, open waters

I just spent 3 or 4 weeks (20K casts) to get the Great Sea Ray, so I'm glad this took me "only" 2300 casts !

Just wanted to confirm for anyone checking in 2026 (or later) that this fish pet can be obtained by fishing in open water at the lake north-west of Niuzao Temple in Townlong Steppes. This is the same lake where the pet battle trainer Seeker Zusshi is located.

I fished it up after approximately 500-600 casts on a character with max Pandaria fishing using a Strong Fishing Pole (+5 Skill) that can be bought from Fishing vendors such as the one in Dornogal. No special lures or rods or whatever, just patience and some luck.

While there are fish pools that spawn in this lake, I did not go out of my way to fish from them, and the majority of my casts were in open water.
