This can be enchanted with crusader, spelldmg, int and you can reuse it on all your charecters since it aint soulbounds, so gogo enchant it, and get some nice lvl 1-20s :D

Edit/comment. Haha Im surprised this is still getting upvoted. I remember having one with each enchant back then, sort of an early form of BoA/Heirloom weapon :-) Could it be that my little trick lead to BoA/Heirlooms? Mind.....blown!

I don't remember when, but they added more items that people can use in place of the 'traditional' mining picks. The best part is, you don't need the axe skill to use the mining pick, as my warlock is using Brann's Trusty Pick just fine. Here's a list of the different mining picks:

* Kobold Excavation Pick
* Gouging Pick
* Brann's Trusty Pick
* Tunnel Pick
* Miner's Revenge
* Cold Iron Pick
* Digmaster 5000
* Gnomish Army Knife
* Hammer Pick
* Bladed Pickaxe

The white mining pick technically isn't an axe which is awesome - I just had to tank an instance as a ret paladin and didn't have any of my 1 hand skills leveled, so I threw on the mining pick and come to think of it I haven't missed on a mob once. Since my threat is via spell damage, I was able to tank just fine with it ;)

the mining pick(or black smith hammer, or skinning knife, or fishing pole) has slightly better damage than your fist in unarmed combat like if say your real weapon goes red from 0 durability left. So it is a last ditch backup weapon.

If your class can use axes its a good idea to hold on to one of those better picks listed by Chaoscrusader666 in your mining bag.

As of Patch 5.0.4 the mining pick gives you +10 points to mining while you carry it with you. You don't have to equip it to benefit from this effect.

Thanks to the other posters for pointing the following out:
You also don't need a pick to mine anymore. This means it's your decision whether you carry this pick with you or not. I would still recommend it because there could always be a mining node or a defeated mob which can be mined and the higher skill (with the pick) can make the difference if you can mine it or not.

Although the profession bonus does not stack with Gatherer, Advanced Mining, or Goblin Mining Helmet they seem to work in the same way that the racial bonuses do, in that they do not change the potential skillups that you will get. (A mob/node that gives a skillup will not go grey if you put this in your bags). They merely change the upper range of your ability to gather.

So mining no longer requires a pick? I just picked up mining went to dreanor without a pick and mined a vein out in the world since i didnt have a mine built on this character. didnt need a pick. go out to broken isles can mine without a pick here as well
