At first when I looked at this, I was a little disappointed, thinking I would have to use 24 of these to get one pet from lvl 1 to 25. However, I then realized you can get at least 3 or 4 of these daily from Draenor Tamers and 2 Pet Treat per week in Pandaria. So I feel it would be best to fight the Pandaria Tamers while using a Pet Treat and/or Lesser Pet Treat and get a carry pet from 1 to lvl 20 or so. Then, switch to another lvl 1 carry pet and repeat. Use the Flawless Battle-Training Stone you earn on the pets you have leveled to 20-24.

Moral of the Post: Use Exp Buffs for low level pets and Training Stones for high level pets, because high levels take much more battling and effort.

Edit: Changed "Draenor Tamers" to "Pandaria Tamers" as the Pandaria Tamers are much more efficient and useful. Thanks, Ender111!

You do not need to worry about 'wasting' any XP that you may already have accumulated for a given level.

For example, if you use one of these items on a Battle Pet whose XP bar is halfway between 23 and 24, the bar will move up to halfway between 24 and 25.

So I purchased one of these and I can't get it to work.
Doesn't matter what click I use, if I click the pet from the list, the 3 active, the one I have selected or caged in my inventory. I just can't get it to activate. What am I missing?

It still seems to me you can level pets to 25 a heck of a lot faster with a treat, flying between Pandarian tamers. These stones are a waste of bag space. Not even account-bound like the blue stones. It would have been far better to give them an xp based level raise, so it would raise a pet 5 or ten levels at level one, but then only 1 or 2 levels near level cap. They missed a great opportunity with these stones.

Edit: Patch 6.1: Thank goodness these are finally account bound. No need to waste eight slots. Just ship them to alts and level the problem levels as needed.

Edit: Patch 7.1: I keep these on an alt now and just use them to level the last few levels. When doing pet achievements for Legion, I'm finding a lot of pets good for the specific battles that are a few levels shy. These stones are good for that.

These stones award an amount of XP equal to the total required for the pet's current level. So, for example, a level 1 pet would gain 50 XP while a level 24 pet would gain 1980 XP.

Any XP beyond what was needed to reach the next level is put towards your progress bar on the next level. So, for example, if you use a stone on a level 12 pet which is 545/945 towards level 13, it will gain 945 XP which would put it at 545/990 towards level 14 after using the stone.

While at first glance this seems to indicate that you get more benefit the higher your pet level, figuring out the optimal point at which to use these stones is a little bit more complicated. Even though your higher level pets need more XP per level they also earn more XP per battle. The real measure of how much effort you are saving by using a stone is the amount of effort (in terms of number and difficulty of pet battles) you would have taken to earn that XP.

There is a sizeable jump in the XP required from level 20 to 21 but thereafter the jumps for every new level are pretty small. Which means that levelling up pets in the level 21-24 range all takes a similar amount of effort. However, it should be remembered that using a stone on a level 24 pet that already has some progress on its XP bar means that some XP will be wasted - the more progress your pet has made from level 24 to 25, the more will be wasted.

My conclusion is that if you want the best return from using these stones, use them on pets that are level 21-23. Use them also on level 24 pets that don't have much progress towards level 25.

If you find that you are collecting more training stones than you can use in this way, then using them from levels 17-20 yields the next most effective returns.

As of 2015.07.24, Battle-Training Stones are not working on pets that cannot battle. They now give an "Invalid target" message instead :/

I seem to have noticed when I was using these to level up one of my battle pets, when I was stood in my Pet Menagerie Alliance side, all of the pets that wander around your garrison and the idle pets that would sit around your Managerie would ALL despawn at once.

A couple seconds later, a mass selection of random pets would all respawn again stacked of top of each other next to the pet vendors. Using multiple of these stones at once to mass level a pet would constantly despawn and respawn random battle pets around you.

Protip: I just wasted a couple of these on an Elekk Plushie and they do nothing. They're gone from my inventory. Would have been nice to get an invalid target message instead but this didn't occur.

It looks like this is a pretty uncommon but known issue. Unfortunately, while our generic character logs will show the flawless battle-training stones being used, they do not record which pet they are used on. As that is the case, we cannot reimburse the stones.

I'm going to go ahead and attach this to our internal bug report on the issue. I'd recommend submitting a bug report yourself in game (under "Help" in the game menu). Our devs prioritize hotfixes partially based on number of confirmed cases of a given problem. So in situations like this, two bug reports are better than one.

I just noticed that they are about to change these stones.

From the 9.1.5 Development Notes:
Flawless and family-specific Battle-Training Stones now provide a flat 2,000 experience (was the amount required to gain one level).
Fel-Touched Battle-Training Stones now provide a flat 10,000 experience (was the amount required to gain five levels).

I was about to write that this is a nerf but actually this is a nice boost.
Level 13 to level 14 requires 990 exp.
Level 24 to level 25 requires 1980 exp.

So it will take less stones to level a pet all the way from 1 to 25 and it will make no difference
when leveling from 2x to 25.

To understand how this affects using these over the old form (i.e. blanket 2 levels), the following table shows the XP required for each level, so you can get an idea of when to use combinations of these and the Fel-Touched Battle-Training Stone.

To summarise, with the 9.1.5 changes (2000xp and 10000xp), a level 1 pet will require 12 Flawless Battle-Training Stone OR 3 Fel-Touched Battle-Training Stone to achieve maximum level (though the latter will result in a lot of wasted XP if all three are used).

I have got a VERY basic spreadsheet that can be downloaded where you can put in the current pet level, and it will advise the use of stones. It also puts in how much wasted XP there would be when using these, so it might be worth considering actually battling instead for that XP, to maximise stone efficiency.

The weekly pet battle bonus (Sign of the Critter), Pet Treats, and Safari Hat do not provide any boost to the XP gains from battle training stones.

I wonder if there's a way to buy these Flawless Battle-Training Stones in bulk? The way it is today (in Shadowlands 9.2), one can purchase a stone from Keeper Ta'hult in Oribos for three Polished Pet Charms. However, it's not possible to buy more than one at a time since one is forced to confirm the purchase after each attempt.

Is there any way to buy more than one at a time? Is it possible with a macro?

Personally, I'd like to purchase about 1000 and top off all of my pets that aren't level 25... and get rid of the 4700+ charms taking up space in my bank.

Only adding 1 level per stone as of Dragonflight pre-patch, at least at level 13 and higher. Did add 2 levels to an 11.
